NEW BIRDS FROM THE PHILIPPINES

The following novelties are based largely on material from field work of the junior author, carried on under the auspices of Chicago Natural History Museum and Silliman University over a number of years. A grant from the Guggenheim Foundation enabled Dr. Rabor to come to the United States for a year, and a Fellowship from Chicago Natural History Museum enabled him to study in the Museum during the summer of 1957. We are indebted to Dr. C. Vaurie and Mr. E. Thomas Gilliard of the American Museum of Natural History and Mr. H. Deignan of the United States National Museum for the loan of comparative material.
Ptilocichla mindanensis fortichi, new subspecies
Type. — Chicago Natural History Museum no. 223,408, from Cantaub, Sierra Bullones, Bohol, Philippine Islands. Adult male collected April 17, 1955, by D. S. Rabor.
Diagnosis. — Like P. m. minuta of Samar but differs in the fol- lowing characters: feathers of crown and upper back with black (not dark brown) edgings; lower back and rump mostly black (not dark brown) ; streaking of upper parts whiter and more conspicuous (less tinged with fulvous); edgings of feathers of under parts, especially on flanks, darker and more blackish.

Wing.— <? (9) 68-76 (av. 71.9); 9 73.5 mm.
Range. — Bohol Island.
Remarks. — Named in honor of the late Ismael Fortich of Sierra Bullones for his interest in and aid to the expedition in the field.
The name for this species is not basilanica, but mindanensis Blasius (see Rand, 1955, Auk, 72: 210).
Stachyris nigrocapitata boholensis, new subspecies
Type. — Chicago Natural History Museum no. 223,454, from Cantaub, altitude 2,450 feet, Sierra Bullones, Bohol, Philippine Islands. Adult male collected April 19, 1955, by D. S. Rabor.
Diagnosis. — Like S. n. nigrocapitata of Samar, but differs in the reduction in length and width of the dark chestnut stripe on each side of the throat; in the clear saffron yellow chin and throat (not with distinct streaks of dark chestnut); in the much reduced dark chestnut patch behind each eye; and in lacking a chestnut tinge on the nape.

Range. — Bohol Island.
Ficedula hyperythra malindangensis, new subspecies
Type. — Chicago Natural History Museum no. 227,483, from Gandawan, altitude 4,500-5,500 feet, Mt. Malindang, Zamboanga Peninsula, Mindanao, Philippine Islands. Adult male collected April 19, 1956, by D. S. Rabor.
Diagnosis. — Like F. h. nigrorum of Negros but differs in the following characters: lores, side of head, and edge of chin and throat more intensely black; ochraceous buff of under parts extending farther posteriorly; and under tail coverts ochraceous buff.

Range. — Mt. Malindang from 3,500 to 7,450 feet.
Rhinomyias ruficauda boholensis, new subspecies
Type.— Chicago Natural History Museum no. 223,571, from Cantaub, Sierra Bullones, Bohol, Philippine Islands. Adult male collected May 10, 1955, by D. S. Rabor.
Diagnosis. — This subspecies is the lightest-colored above. It is like ocularis of Sulu and zamboanga in having little ruddy brown in the back, and like zamboanga and samarensis in having an obscure breast band.

■z bright, almost olive brown upper parts (not rich ruddy brown), and
whiter under parts with brownish olive breast band less distinct.
Compared with zamboanga, this new race is brighter and paler olive
brown above.

Rhinomyias ruficauda zamboanga, new subspecies
Type. — Chicago Natural History Museum no. 215,368, from Diway, Dabiak, Zamboanga Peninsula, Mindanao, Philippine Islands. Adult male collected April 29, 1952, by D. S. Rabor.
Diagnosis. — The darkest and dullest above of any of the Philip- pine races, with a very light brownish breast band. This race differs from the adjacent ruficauda of Basilan as follows: darker and duller (more olive, less red-brown) above; the tail darker rufous; less gray in the face; the breast not clear gray but with a faint olive brown tinge; and the mandible pale brown (not mostly black).
Compared with samarensis of Samar and eastern Mindanao, this new race differs chiefly in the darker, duller brown (less red- brown) upper parts and darker rufous tail.
Wing.— <? (5) 75-78 (av. 76.4); 9 (6) 71-77 (av. 73.5) mm.
Range. — Zamboanga Peninsula of western Mindanao.
Remarks. — The type locality of mindanensis Mearns is Pantar, near Lake Lanao, and the name is a synonym of samarensis.
Pachycephala philippinensis siquijorensis, new subspecies
Type. — Chicago Natural History Museum no. 217,533, from Poo, Lazi, Siquijor, Philippine Islands. Adult male collected June 1, 1950, by D. S. Rabor.
Diagnosis. — A yellow-bellied, green-backed form with a large bill ; like apoensis of Samar and Mindanao, but paler below and with a larger bill; like basilanica of Basilan, but with a larger bill, a grayer crown and a less distinct wash of brown on the breast.
Culmen. — P. p. siquijorensis: cf (6) 18.5-20 (av. 19.2); 9 (5) 18-19 mm. P. p. apoensis: Samar, cf 17, 17; 9 16-17; eastern Mindanao, & (7) 15.5-17 (av. 16.1); Mt. Malindang, <? (8) 15.5-17 (av. 16.3); 9 (9) 15-17 (av. 16.1) mm. P. p. basilanica: & 16, 16.5; 9 16.5 mm. (type examined).
Range. — Siquijor Island.

Sitta frontalis zamboanga, new subspecies
Type. — Chicago Natural History Museum no. 227,539, from Napangan, altitude 5,500-6,200 feet, Mt. Malindang, Zamboanga Peninsula, Mindanao, Philippine Islands. Adult male collected April 19, 1956, by D. S. Rabor.
Diagnosis. — This, the darkest subspecies, differs from S. f. apo of eastern Mindanao in being darker, cinnamon brown washed with lilac on the under parts; differs from S. f. lilacea of Samar in being darker below and completely lacking blue below the eye and in the ear coverts; differs from both in the greater amount of lilac wash on hind neck and f oreback.
Wing.— c? (5) 77-83 (av. 78.9); 9 (3) 71-75 (av. 73) mm. Range. — Zamboanga Peninsula of western Mindanao and Basilan.
Rhabdornis inornatus zamboanga, new subspecies
Type. — Chicago Natural History Museum no. 228,014, from Masawan, altitude 3,500-4,500 feet, Mt. Malindang, Zamboanga Peninsula, Mindanao, Philippine Islands. Adult male collected April 13, 1956, by D. S. Rabor.
Diagnosis. — Like R. i. alaris of eastern Mindanao but differs in the duller brown (not warmer ruddy brown) of the upper parts.
Wing.— & (10) 88-94 (av. 90.8); 9 (10) 85-92 (av. 88.4) mm.
Cvlmen.— <? 18-20; 9 17-20 mm.
Range. — Mt. Malindang from 3,500 to 5,500 feet altitude.
Remarks. — This species turns out to be more widespread and common than was thought. The races are as follows: grandis Salomonsen, 1953, from Luzon; inornatus Grant, 1896, from Samar; rabori Rand, 1950, from Negros; alaris Rand, 1948, from eastern Mindanao; and zamboanga (see above).
Dicaeum anthonyi masawan, new subspecies
Type. — Chicago Natural History Museum no. 228,016, from Masawan, altitude 3,500-4,500 feet, Mt. Malindang, Zamboanga Peninsula, Mindanao, Philippine Islands. Adult male collected March 31, 1956, by D. S. Rabor.
Diagnosis. — Male like D. a. kampalili but gray of breast and flanks tinged yellow, and abdomen yellowish white; wing slightly longer; female unknown.
Wing. — d" 57, 57 mm.

Culmen. — d" 12, 12 mm.
Range. — Mt. Malindang between 3,500 and 4,500 feet.
Remarks. — Though not an exact intermediate, being closer to D. a. kampalili, the yellow wash over the gray and white under parts bridges part of the difference between anthonyi and kampalili. This and the similarity in size, bill shape and color pattern lead to treating the three forms as conspecific.
Aethopyga boltoni malindangensis, new subspecies
Type. — Chicago Natural History Museum no. 227,667, from Gandawan, altitude 4,500-5,500 feet, Mt. Malindang, Zamboanga Peninsula, Mindanao, Philippine Islands. Adult male collected April 15, 1956, by D. S. Rabor.
Diagnosis. — Like A. b. boltoni from Mt. Apo and Mt. McKinley but male with orange of center of breast brighter and more extensive; more light red in sides of breast; flanks and abdomen brighter yellow; and more iridescence in forehead and crown. Female differs in more extensive and brighter orange of lower breast and brighter yellow flanks and abdomen.
Wing.— c? (6) 51-57 (av. 53.6); 9 (9) 49-52 (av. 51) mm.
Culmen (from base).— d" 22-25; 9 20-21 mm.
Range. — Mt. Malindang from 3,500 to 7,450 feet altitude.
Arachnothera clarae malindangensis, new subspecies
Type. — Chicago Natural History Museum no. 227,696, from Masawan, Mt. Malindang, Zamboanga Peninsula, Mindanao, Philippine Islands. Adult male collected May 11, 1956, by D. S. Rabor.
Diagnosis. — Like A. c. philippinensis of Mt. McKinley, eastern Mindanao, but differs in having upper parts darker and duller green, and under parts grayer with less of an olive green wash.
Wing.— <? (5) 86-92 (av. 90); 9 84, 87 mm.
Culmen (from base).— <? (5) 38-41 (av. 39.7); 9 41, 42 mm.
Range. — Mt. Malindang from 3,500 to 4,500 feet altitude.
Remarks. — No races have been recognized in this species but there are three as follows:
(a) A. c. philippinensis Steere, July 14, 1890, Samar; forehead naked and heavy wash of green below.

(b) A. c. clarae Blasius, April 15, 1890 (see Jour. f. Orn., 38: 146), Davao; forehead feathered and less of a greenish wash below.
(c) A. c. malindangensis Rand and Rabor; as above.
Hypocryptadius cinnamomeus malindangensis, new sub- species
Type. — Chicago Natural History Museum no. 227,860, from Gandawan, altitude 4,500-5,500 feet, Mt. Malindang, Zamboanga Peninsula, Mindanao, Philippine Islands. Adult male collected April 15, 1956, by D. S. Rabor.
Diagnosis. — Like H. c. cinnamomeus of Mt. Apo but upper parts brighter cinnamon rufous; breast tinged with brighter cinnamon; abdomen and under tail coverts whiter (less grayish).
Wing.— cf (12) 89-96 (av. 92); 9 (12) 89-96 (av. 91.2) mm.
Range. — Mt. Malindang from 3,500 to 7,450 feet altitude.
