OCCASIONAL PAPERS THE MUSEUM TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY NUMBER 34 18 JULY 1975 A NEW SPECIES OF EPTESICUS FROM GUADELOUPE, LESSER ANTILLES (CHIROPTERA: VESPERTILIONIDAE) Hugh H. Genoways and Robert J. Baker In the course of field studies on bats of the Antillean region, three specimens of the genus Eptesicus were obtained on the island of Guadeloupe in the Lesser Antilles. The nearest known populations of this genus are on Puerto Rico 500 kilometers to the west ( E. fuscus wetmorei ), on the northern coast of South America 850 kilometers to the southwest ( E . fuscus miradorensis), and on Tobago 550 kilo¬ meters to the south ( E . brasiliensis melanopterus). Study of the speci¬ mens from Guadeloupe reveals that they represent a distinct species that is most closely related to Eptesicus fuscus. This new species is named and described below. Eptesicus guadeloupensis, new species Holotype. —Adult male, skin and skull, no. 19902 The Museum, Texas Tech University (TTU); from 2 km. S, 2 km. E Baie-Mahault, Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe; obtained on 29 July 1974 by R. J. Baker and H. H. Genoways; original no. 74M338 of J. W. Bickham; karyo¬ type no. 8286. Geographic distribution. —Known only from the type locality. Diagnosis. —Largest New World member of the genus Eptesicus ; characterized by especially large ears and long tibia. Description .—Cranial size large, particularly reflected in measure¬ ments of cranial length (Table 1); skull similar to that of E. fuscus but proportionally longer and narrower (Fig. 1); ears unusually long for a North American member of the genus (Fig. 2); other external dimensions, except forearm, longer than in E. fuscus ; membranes black; pelage black basally, both dorsally and ventrally; upperparts Table 1. — External and cranial measurements of two species of the genus Eptesicus. 2 OCCASIONAL PAPERS MUSEUM TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY J3ddfl SSOJDB 00 NO ON oo ON — ON © n © © r- rq r; NO - r-; 00 00* oo' r-‘ oo oo oo' 00 oo 00 oo oo oo 00 OO 00 oo 00 qipEOjg MOJqiOOJ, XEJ^ rr r- ON ^1 rq rq ON NO NO m, m, m, m, ON r- jo qj8u3T 00 oo 00 NO r^ NO K NO r^ r^ r^ r^ r^ r-' r^ r~* qipsojg f" r- ON © o 00 m r~ On r- © rq © «n r- r~ m pfOlSBW O © o d d ON © ON ON ON © © d © © ON © © © p* dSGouiGig n oo rq n © © © ’8- © m, 00 jo qj8u3i ON —H .o NO o r^ © ON o ON ON © pp — pr pp © NT, Tl" NT, '8- m '8- m ’'fr sn ■Nt m, m, m. «n >n «n >n 3 .cj >n X JE3 H rr 'T 00 ON rq c3 a U 13 13 13 5 06 £ ~06 e ■a ■o ■o o o o o 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 c > > k* V 3 E o> 3 c « 3 C V 3 a o a o a o a o a o o *o o *o C O X O X r- r■ X X t-‘ >. o *n o a a a a X X X X X X X o o *Q Jr z z S 5 O ■O — P ta 3 D u •o D X) D •o o z s z s z s z s z s z s z S o □ o X D u s i £ DA a C p £ fct £ < < < < < < < u P f^3 © ir — i rq rr 'T NO r- 00 ppi On — o 00 ■2 m o O O ON O (N 00 NO NO NO NO NO © © 00 ON OS o 00 00 flj On ON On M
