University of Illinois Library L161— O-1096 \ Published by CHICAGO NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM Volume 34 NOVEMBER 10, 1955 No. 32 A NEW SPECIES OF CHONDRIA WITH A KEY TO THE BORNEAN SPECIES (COLEOPTERA: ENDOMYCHIDAE) H. F. STROHECKER UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI, CORAL GABLES, FLORIDA The following new species of endomychid beetle was collected by the Bornean Zoological Expedition (1950) of Chicago Natural History Museum. Chondria cardiaca sp. nov. Figure 64. Broadly cordiform, ferruginous except for the eyes and joints 9 and 10 of the antennae, which are black. Length 2.4-2.7 mm. In the male the antennae are about half as long as the body, with joints 3-8 each longer than broad, subequal in length but increasing in diameter distally, joint 9 about as long as broad, 10 transverse, 11 oval and about equal in length to 9 and 10 together. Pronotum transverse, narrowed from base to apex with only moderate cur- vature of the sides, its front angles somewhat produced and acute, its raised margins narrowed behind, the hind margin deeply notched internal to the hind angles. The basal sulcus of the pronotum is not deep but very evident and ends on each side in a punctiform fovea. Elytra strongly convex, cordiform, the umbones prominent. Hind femur with a flange that is produced distally into a slender, acute tooth. The female is similar to the male but antennal joints 4-8 are no longer than broad, the front angles of the pronotum are right angles, the elytra are of shorter form and the hind femur lacks the flange and tooth found in the male. Holotype. — Male collected by Robert F. Inger in the Sapagaya Forest Preserve, Sandakan District, British North Borneo, July 27, 1950. In Chicago Natural History Museum. No. 777 331 NOV 1C 1335 332 FIELDIANA: ZOOLOGY, VOLUME 34 Allotype. — Female collected by D. D wight Davis at southeast end of Dewhurst Bay, Kinabatangan District, British North Borneo, July 21, 1950. In Chicago Natural History Museum. FIG. 64. Chondria cardiaca sp. nov. Left, dorsal view, left half of female; above, hind fe- mur of male. Paratypes. — Two males and one female with the same data as the holotype, and four females with the same data as the allotype. Three other species of Chondria from Borneo were described by Arrow in 1920 (Trans. Ent. Soc. London, pp. 58-61). The follow- ing is a key to the four species: 1. Elytra plainly seriately punctured 2 Elytra not seriately punctured, cordiform cardiaca 2. Club of antenna much shorter than stalk seriosetosa Antennal club equal to or longer than stalk 3 3. Sides of pronotum serrulate globulosa Sides of pronotum smooth; raised margin narrowed behind nitida J 39 * UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS-URBANA
