May 6, 1986 A BIBLIOGRAPHY AND CATALOG OF TAXA FOR ALLYN GOODWIN SMITH (1893-1976) By Michael G. Kellogg Department of Paleontology, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720 and Associate, Department of Invertebrate Zoology, California Academy of Sciences, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California 94118 Abstract: A bibliography of 181 published titles and catalog of 76 named taxa is compiled for Allyn Goodwin Smith and summarized in table form. His contributions to malacology reflect the careful work, energy, and enthusiasm he displayed in life. Introduction When Allyn Goodwin Smith died at the age of 83, it was at the end of two full and equally successful careers. His retirement from the Pa- cific Telephone and Telegraph Company in 1955, after 30 years of service, allowed him the fulltime pufsuit of his second career at the California Academy of Sciences. There he had served as Research Associate in Conchology since 1939, and was Research Malacologist from 1956 to 1960, while simultaneously serving as Executive Assistant to the Director. In 1960 he accepted appointment as Associate Curator of the newly reformed Department of Invertebrate Zoology, and in 1963, became chairman of the Depart- ment. He served in these capacities until his sec- ond retirement in 1972, after which he was an active Research Associate in Malacology, De- partment of Geology, until his death. The major accomplishments of his scientific career and other biographical data have been de- tailed by Howard (1969), Kellogg (1976), Emer- son (1977), Miller (1977), and Rodda (1977); in addition, Allyn is listed in American Malacolo- gists. To all of these accounts should be added remarks made by his late wife Isabel Smith in 1977: ". . . in spite of his intense interest in the field of malacology he was always able to enter enthusiastically into the various interests of each member of his family. We were married over fifty years and I never knew him to lose his in- terest in other people or enthusiasm for life." Noted primarily for his expertise in Polypla- cophora and Gastropoda (especially Pulmonata), Allyn contributed significantly to knowledge of these taxa. He introduced a total of 76 new names, mostly in the chitons (31) and gastropods (43). Of the new gastropod taxa, 1 5 were prosobranch, 9 opisthobranch, and 19 pulmonate. His 76 new [1] OCCASIONAL PAPERS OF THE CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCES, No. 145 Table 1 . Publications of Allyn G. Table 1 summarizes Al- lyn's publications by time period and subject and reveals changes in research emphasis and pat- terns of productivity that relate to periods in his career. For example, nearly one-half of his pub- lished titles appeared during the 1960s; the ma- jority of these in the first half of the decade. It is evident that this productivity and enthusiasm coincided with the reactivation of the Depart- ment of Invertebrate Zoology and the vital role Allyn played in its establishment. In addition, the large number of short notes and reviews pub- lished during the early years of the Veliger reflect his commitment to the success of that journal. It is also of interest to note that pulmonates were the subject of papers early and late in his pub- lishing career, while prosobranchs received his attention primarily during the 1940s and 1950s. I gratefully acknowledge the following persons for aiding this project. Barry Roth, Peter Rodda, and David Lindberg were generous with both their time and advice. James T. Carlton, Peter Rodda, Barry Roth, and Dwight W. Taylor kind- ly reviewed various drafts of the manuscript. Tom Rice {Of Sea and Shore magazine), William D. Rose (Oklahoma Geological Survey), and Ellis L. Yochelson (U.S. Geological Survey) provided dates of publication, and Richard D. Hoare and Barry Roth supplied information concerning their coauthorships with Allyn G. Smith. All of the above helped to make this compilation as com- plete, accurate, and useful as possible; I retain sole responsibility for any errors that remain. Explanation and Conventions The bibliography is arranged chronologically. Each entry includes a full citation; exact dates of publication are provided for all papers naming new taxa (indicated by an asterisk [*]) and for others when possible. Many of Allyn's articles in the Minutes of the Conchological Club of South- ern California were published without titles, which have been provided in brackets. Cross- references to corrections are also provided within brackets. This bibliography would not be com- plete without noting that Allyn also made im- portant contributions to works such as the Land Mollusca of North America (Pilsbry 1939), the Intertidal Invertebrates of California (Haderlie and Abbott 1980). Many of his writings (often in digested form and not included here) can also be found in the Annual Reports and Newsletters of the California Academy of Sciences. The catalog of taxa is arranged alphabetically. Each entry includes the new taxon, authorship (if coauthored), original generic assignment, ci- tation, type-locality, and known repositories of type-specimens. Many extant paratypes are not included for lack of information. Where the type- localities or museum numbers of type-specimens indicated here differ from the original account they have been checked against the actual spec- imens or published type-catalogs, and the correct version is given here. Measurements are in met- ric or English units as originally published; equivalents are included only if provided in the original. p KELLOGG: BIBLIOGRAPHY FOR ALLYN GOODWIN SMITH Abbreviations AGS— Ailyn Goodwin Smith ANSP— Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia CASG— California Academy of Sciences, Department of Ge- ology CASIZ— California Academy of Sciences, Department of In- vertebrate Zoology LACM — Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History (OD)— original designation OU— University of Oklahoma SDNHM— San Diego Natural History Museum SU— Stanford University (collections now on permanent loan to the California Academy of Sciences) UBC— University of British Columbia UCMP— Museum of Paleontology, University of California (Berkeley) USGS— United States Geological Survey USNM— United States National Museum [At the California Academy of Sciences, type-specimens of Recent species originally cataloged into the type-series of the Department of Geology have been or eventually will be renum- bered and transferred to the type-series of the Department of Invertebrate Zoology.] Literature Cited Coppois, G.
