INTRODUCTION

The following is a list of the Coleoptera known
to occur in San Diego County, California. The number of
forms included, 1649 species and subspecies, I am certain
can be greatly increased by more extensive collecting; but,
however incomplete it may be, it is hoped that this list
will be an aid to collectors in this region. For this rea-
son I have given exact localities, dates of capture, and
some ecological data.

As long ago as 1874 a paper on the Coleoptera of
San Diego County was written by Mr. 0. N. Sanford, first
treasurer of the San Diego Society of Natural History, and
read before the Society on November 30 of that year. In-
stallments were later published in the San Diego Daily
Union of December 2 and 30, 1874, and January 20, 1875.
The only other studies of San Diego County beetles to be
published as such are the notes on certain families by Dr.
P. E. Blaisdell, which appeared in "Zoe," Vol. 3, Nos. 1 to
4, 1892-1893.

Por convenience, I have adopted the terminology
of the Lengl "Catalogue" and its supplements; and the ntun-
bers in parentheses following the names of species are those
of the Leng list. All bibliographical references up to and
including the year 1932 are to be found in Leng; subsequent
references may be located through the Entomological Litera-
ture Department of the "Entomological News."

optera of Southern California" by Dr. H. C. yall.S which I
have found indispensable in many ways. I have used it as a
starting point for published records, and have added to the
references contained in it all those relating to San Diego
County which could be found in entomological literature
since its publication.

I want to acknowledge my deep indebtedness to Dr.
Frank E. Blaisdell, of the California Academy of Sciences,
for his constant and untiring aid in making determinations,
for his kindness in reading and checking the manuscript,
and for the use of the extensive material in his collection
that was secured in San Diego County years ago; to Mr.

within the County over a period of thirty years, the result

Two specimens from Jacrnnba taken by Mr. George H.
Field. This species is common in Imperial Valley and
sometimes can be taken in large numbers from lights.

Cicindela hirticollis Say var. gravida lee. (51d)

Hot rare at the bays and ocean beaches. Taken in Feb-
ruary, April, and August.

Cicindela latesignata Lee. (52)

This species with its form, obliviosa Csy. , is found
abundantly in midsummer at the bays and ocean beaches.
It is not found inland and is less common at other
times of the year.

Cicindela vibex Horn var. viridissima Pall (55a)

Reported under the name vihex Horn from "the ocean
beach at Oceanside (Blaisdell)" by Pall, 1901.

Gicind.ela oregona Lee. (61)

Pound commonly throughout the year at water. Most
abundant at fresh water in the spring.

"Near San Diego in damp places away from the ocean

Cicindela carthagena DeJ. var. haemorrhagica Lee. (86c)

Formerly abundant about San Diego. Now rare along the
inland streams in August and September. "Occurs on
the dark sand along the bay beaches at San Diego."

Cicindela carthagena Dej'. var. pacifica Schp. (86e)

"San Diego is the type region for this subspecies. I
have taken it abundantly on the ocean beach at Del
Mar." Blaisdell, 1925.

in February, March, and April. Commonest at Dulzura

is one specimen in the collection of Dr. Blaisdell
collected in Julian on July 30.

the California laurel tree (Umbellularia) of which
there is a group on the Laguna Mountains. The beetles
may be found there, lir. C. Harbison examined several
of the trees, but found no evidence of the beetle.
