Long, 359 Roycroft Ave, Long Beach, California 90814, USA. Telephone 213-433-7148 (message recorder) or 439-2028. Subscription rates are $15.00 per calendar year for individuals and $17.50 per calendar year for institutions. The Opisthobranch Newsletter is issued in 12 parts each year. Effective August 1, 1983, the NEW ADDRESS of the Opisthobranch Newsletter will be 1701 Hyland St., Bayside, CA 95524 and the telephone number will be listed in area code 707 % ¥% € ¥ EDITORS NOTES I am moving as quickly as possible to Eureka. As note above, I have already purchased a home there and will move as soon as the house in Long Beachis sold. Iam looking forward to spending much more time with opisthobranch literature research and correspondence. The asterisk in the bibliography after the year is a simple code for computer search. I simply changed from a period (.) to an asterisk (*) so that I can pick off only the author, date, and citation number from the whole citation. . My library is going almost totally to microfilm. I have been increasing the number of papers available on film for several yearsnow (about 10) and hope to be able to obtain copies of all the citations in the ON for reference. I have started converting from my 3"x5" bibliography file cards to 105mm x 148mm microfiche cards. I can make either fiche copies or paper copies of any of the papers which are in my files. I can even find them now! Thanks again this month for the support you have given the ON. Thanks especially to Eveline Marcus, Judith Hunter, Don Cadien, Ron Velarde, Dave Behrens, and others. £4 eX * SYSTEMATIC LIST OF THE OPISTHOBRANCHIA Following the same basic policy as the Veliger, the ON will accept the most recently published taxonomic changes as accurate -- provided they have been published in a refereed journal. This list is an attempt to set a baseline for work. Not all of the most recent changes have been incorporated and many of the authorities for the higher taxa have not yet been found. If you find recent changes which are not incorporated in the current systematic list, please send them to me along with the reference source. Please include the taxon, author, publication date, and the source reference for each change. If possible, photocopy the section of the ON systematic list and make the changes right on the photocopy. If you disagree with a change, or if you want to change something else, please prepare your arguements and send them to the ON alcong with the changes. They will be refereed prior to publication in the ON. New placements and arguements or references will be published as they are received in the next available issue of the ON. At least annually, the entire list should be reprinted in the ON. I have just spent about a month updating the "Bibliography of Opisthobranchia" with a huge amount of help from Don Cadien. I am finding that there are several hundred citations which are missing totally from the bibliography -- and several thousand which I do not have a copy of the paper on microfilm! It would be very helpful to have a complete set of separates from each of you who can afford to send them. I will be happy to credit you with $.01 per page (you count the pages) for any opisthobranch papers (printed originals only -- not photocopies or electrostatic copies) which you sendtome. This includes your reprints and any extra separates you wish to send old or new, by any author. Please note that I will accept entire libraries on this basis, as long as each paper, book, or article lists opisthobranchs. These credits may be used to extend your ON subscription, buy back volumes of the ON, buy microfiche copies, buy paper copies, or simply be your donation to help the ON keep going and become more useful. Books sent on the terms above should include a note telling me how many pages are included and should be registered or insured for delivery if the value is significant to you. As long as you are insuring delivery and accept the terms above, it is not necessary to write for pre-approval. I believe this should make the ON available to many more people and, at the same time, help me to see every paper published on opisthobranchs. As in the past, I am happy to trade subscriptions with other publications on a yearly basis. Please write if interested. Please send copies of all of your current reprints even if you have recently sent them. Many have become lost in the mail or have already been traded to someone for other opisthobranch Papers. I will list extra papers in the ON from time to time as I have done in the past which will be available for purchase or trade. The ultimate purpose is to complete a set of all opisthobranch literature for indexing and to be able to provide film or paper copies of any individual information needed for research on opisthobranchs. I have already spent fifteen years trying to put together this research tool and will probably spend the next fifteen years working to complete the project. If you are willing to loan me your library please contact me at your earliest convience. Many of you have individual books and papers which I will never see if you do not help with this project. eu € % OPISTHOBRANCH LITERATURE AVAILABLE All of the materials listed below include the cost of surface postage. If you desire insurance and/or air mail, please allow extra for those costs. California residents must add sales tax at the applicable rate. Please send at least 50% of the charges in advance when ordering materials unless you have credits for that amount with the ON. Any excess money sent will either be returned or added to your credit at your request. OPISTHOBRANCH NEWSLETTER July, 1983 Volume 15, Number 7, Page 36 Back volumes of the ON are available at $15.00 per volume. All volumes are still available in paper copies. I have received only one or two comments on the Systmatic List to date which must mean that everyone accepts it as is orelse a pile of mail will be awaiting me in Bayside. As of today, July 8, 1983, we have already purchased our home in Bayside and my company, Zytron, has agreed to move me to Eureka and allowme to continue doing my same job via telephone. Youmay leave messages for me in Los Angeles, at (213)327-6280 if that is more convient or less expensive. The moving company is expected to pick up our household goods on July 25th and deliver them about July 27th. Roberta will follow upnorth to set up the house immediately and I will probably be in Eureka by July 30th. My daughter, Kristin, has graduated from Junior High School and moved back to Baywood Park. Roberta has been keeping up the subscription lists for the ON and helping with the innumerable tasks necessary to maintin the newsletter. Ree RE INFORMATION EXCHANGE According to both Dr. Baba and Dr. Marcus, Crosslandia viridis is a Scyllaeid. Concerning the Janolus sp. reported from Cedros Island in the last ON issue: Thanks to Florence McAlery, photos of the animal have surfaced. The one specimen available isin poor condition but it is almost certainly an undescribed species. The radula is similar to Janolus barbarensis but the external features differ markedly. The dorsal papillae are bulbous with a thin, transparent orange apical ring. J. barbarensis has opaque blue bands. The liver diverticula is highly OPISTHOBRANCH NEWSLETTER July, 1983 Volume 15, Number 7, Page 37 branched. More specimens are needed before any description can be attempted. Thanks so very much to Don Cadien for the tremendous amount of help with filming and other work during June and July. _ Thanks also to Kathy Cadien for her patience and understanding. Thanks to Dave Behrens, Jim Lance, Sandra Millen, Will Jaeckle, and others who have sent information for this issue. I would like to have a photograph of every opisthobranch worker to keep with their publications and correspondence. I have collected a few snapshots over the years but would especially appreciate photographs suitable for publication. Iwill try to arrange these for easy access and may be able to publish them as a group some time in the future. John D. Weichert is a brancher in the San Diego area. I need an address for him. Can someone help? Please send the information to the editor. I still need the author name for the paper entitled: "The Role of the Cerata in the Aeolid Nudibranchs Hermissenda crassicornis (Eschscholtz, 1831) and Aeolidia papillosa (Linnaeus, 1761)." published about 1976 with Dr. R.G.B. Reid as supervisor and Larry Harris and Peter Fankboner (among others) onthe committee. Larry only writes every two or three years but this is terrible -- how about the information Larry! Complete sets of Bergh's Semper's Reisen work should be available in the near future on microfiche. I would be happy to provide sets with a microfiche reader as a package if anyone is interested. Please write the editor stating your interest so that I may contact you when the package is complete. I have the capability to produce "species cards" on diazo film which would include from one to three monochrome slides and about six to nine lines of natural history information on a 105mm x 148mm diazo sheet. If anyone is interested in preparing these please contact the editor. For my opisthobranch library I need copies of all opisthobranch literature not found in standard journals. I especially need copies of MSc. & PhD. papers. Please loan me copies to film so that they will be available when someone needs them. Send originals by registered and/or insured mail and I will film and return them within two weeks. I need Terry Gosliner's thesis. I would also like to borrow a copy of Franc, 1968 and the Treatise on Invert. Palaeo. Meetings were held in McCarty Hall. Hegistration started Sunday afternoon. I arrived on Wednesday and had a very enjoyable time seeing many long-time friends. Slide shows were held on several of the evenings. Some of the opisthobranch people attending included: Dave Mulliner, Steve Long, Trish Morse, Terry Gosliner, Connie Boone, Sandra Millen, Will Jaeckle, Pat LaFollette, Sally Bennett, A.0.D. Willows, Philip Lloyd, Gerald Audesirk, and Ron Shimek. My attendance was limited primarily to Wednesday evening and Thursday as I had my new job to take care of at home. I really hope to do things right next year at the Santa Cruz (tentative location) meetings of the WSM. I will try to attend the entire meeting. Terry Gosliner will chair a symposium on the biology of opisthobranchs. Ihave been named editor of the WSM bulletin for the coming year and hope to get the job done before the end of 1983. Papers were presented by Pat LaFollette, Sandra Millen, Louis Bickell, Ron Shimek, A.0.D. Willows, Gerald Audesirk, and Philip Lloyd. I hope to have abstracts of the papers in the near future if the authors will cooperate. & te € READER FORUM The following notes on the Systematic List are from Clay Carlson: Tne aglajid genus Odontoglaja was established by Rudman, 1978 (0N10132). I don't know how Gascoigne & Wallis went about counting ascoglossan eggs as I have not seen their 1982 paper in The Journal of Molluscan Studies [0N10386]. For those of you who have microfiche readers, the answer is simple -- open the glass flats; put the egg mass (or part of it) on the glass flat; slide the carrier in; and you can view on a full sized screen. The first time you do this with your reader, I suggest that you use material in a microscope slide pair and close the carrier very gently to make certain the thickness is not to great. If you have room for one glass slide but not for a cover, put one slide near each edge of the bottom glass flat and your working material in between. This will prevent crushing your material. Most of the modern fiche carriers remove easily for cleaning. If you want to get fancy, you may put a transparent overlay on the screen to measure uniform areas. If you really want to get fancy, use a reader printer in the positive printing mode and you should get a print better than most line drawings. With a little calculation, you can even calibrate your reader screen to measure size. Your reader is good for anything requiring between 18X and 48X enlargement where the original material is transparent and not too bulky. I view color slides with my reader and most microscope slides will work well also. -- Steven J. Long Committee on Marine Invertebrates: Laboratory Animal Management : Marine Invertebrates. From Jim Lance: "A number of colleagues have inquired about the progress of my proposed volume dealing with the opisthobranchs of the Panamic faunal province -- that is, the warm water coast between the Galapagos Islands and the northern part of the Sea of Cortez. I'm pleased to report that the publisher's deadline for a first manuscript 'December 31st, 1983' is right on, if not a little ahead of schedule. Some two hundred species of mostly shell-less opisthobranchs are being treated, and of these about 94% of publishable photos are in hand. It is evident that illustrations of a few species will have to be paintings or line drawings. Appendices of egg masses, veliger shells, jaw plates, radulae and other anatomical features are about half done. Although I've actively been collecting data from this region for twenty-five years, opisthobranch faunas from vast areas of the Central and South American coast remain unknown. In order to make this volume as complete as possible, I would be very happy to receive data and/or photos from readers of ON interested in contributing to this project." The Opisthobranch Newsletter is now officially in Humboldt County, California. The move was very hectic and expensive but things seem to be settling in nicely. One major flaw is my computer system which has not yet arrived. I was trading it in on a new system which was to be delivered prior to my leaving Southern California,-however, the dealer has not seen fit to follow through on “his commitment. I am doing this newsletter on a rented system. Jim McLean, Joe Houbrick, Sylvard Kool, and Pat LaFollette stopped by the Long's new home on their way up tothe meetings. Pat & Jim stopped by again on their way south. Iam hoping that some of the other folks will stop by later this month. From Hans Bertsch: "Life continues insanely in Mexico. Good luck with your move; hope itis a good one for you." Yes, I will look up my Veligers for you, Hans. Dave and Peg Mulliner are back from their trip to the South Pacific. They were on Samoa for 2 days, then to Tonga for three weeks, Fiji for some time, and Hawaii for two weeks. Hurricane Oscar tore up much of the reef area in March so the collecting was not exceptional. Jim Lance recently made a trip to Nyarit and Sinaloa in Mexico. The major report from Jim was that it was HOT! I hope to hear more in the next few weeks. From Kathe Jensen (Ellebjergvej 22, 1.th., DK-2450 Copenhagen SV, Denmark): I am presently back in Denmark (unemployed again). In April I participated in "The 2nd International Workshop on the Malacogauna of Hong Kong and Southern China". Malacologists from all over the world (very few opisthobranch people, though) got together for almost 3 weeks, working very hard in the field as well as in the lab., socializing -- almost as hard --, and eating -- chopsticks only -- together under rather primitive conditions, but everything was so well planned that I think every on of us felt kind of sad when it was over. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my warmest thanks to the organizers, Dr. Brian Morton and Dr. David Dudgeon -- hoping, of course, that they will organize another workshop soon. I collected about 13 species of Ascoglossa, of which at least one, possibly 3 or 4 are new species. The rest have been described from Japan, India, or Australia, but nobody has ever really looked at Ascoglossa in Hong Kong (Sherman Bleakney collected a few species a few years ago), so they'll all be new records for the area. I was somewhat disappointed at the scarcity of suitable food algae in the Hong Kong area, because the climate seems to be very similar to that in Florida, but apparently the huge amount of fresh-water run-off from the continent decreases salinity sufficiently to prevent growth of certain algae. I was especially surprised (and disappointed) at the complete absence of calcified siphonalean green algae (e.g. Halimeda, Penicillus, etc.), which are the most common substrates for Ascoglossa. Being out of work now, I have plenty of time to look at my preserved material, but it may be a problem to get serial sections of specimens. I just finished revising a manuscript on my toxicity experiments with Mourgona germineae -- what a pain in the neck without a word processor. 3 In one of his latest letters to me, Tom Gascoigne revealed that he will be 80 years old in August. I would like to bring my birthday greetings and best wishes for the future through the ON. I would appreciate drawings of animals recently described or which have been obscure or poorly illustrated. Please send the drawings along with synonymy, range, and natural history notes where possible. As the number of drawings increases ' (already over 130), the utility of the newsletter increases for reference purposes. Thanks to Judith Hunter, Jim Lance, Dave Behrens, Kikutar6 Baba, J. Sherman Bleakney, and others who sent information for this issue. RE NOTES ON OPISTHOBRANCHIA From Dr. K. Baba: notes on Chromodoris verrieri Chromodoris verrieri (Crosse, 1875) Goniodoris verrieri Crosse, 1875 =Glossodoris marginata Baba, 1938 R.C. Willan, 1983 [0N10341] gives the following table "Classification of New Zealand pleubrobranchs"s: Family Pleurobranchidae Subfamily Pleurobranchinae Berthellina citrina (Ri&ppell & Leuckart, 1828) Berthella ornata (Cheeseman, 1878) Berthella mediatas Burn, 1962 Bathyberthella zelandiae n. gen. & n. sp. Subfamily Pleurobranchaeinae Pleurobranchaea maculata (Quoy & Gaimard, 1832) This changes the arrangement in the systematic list given in ON XV(6):30-31. Dave Behrens sent the following notes on Sakuraeolis enosimensis for the drawing in the August issue of the ON: Sakuraeolis enosimensis (Baba, 1930) See Behrens 1982 (The Veliger 24(4):359-363) for complete review and anatomical description. Syn: Hervia enosimensis Baba, 1930 (Venus 2:117-126) Hermissenda crassicornis (see Behrens & Tuel, 1977) Coryphella sp. My original intent of moving to Eureka was to quit my microfilm sales work for a year and concentrate on several opisthobranch publications. My company wanted me to continue my sales and that made it impossible to do my personal work. Now I will take a 3 to 6 month leave of absence and try to get the majority of my pganch work done along with a bit of travel and the Western Society of Malacologists Annual eport. I have already scheduled England for Christmas time. I will be in Manchester from December 22, 1983 to January 4, 1984. I hope to see all of you who are there around that time. Please write if you will be available during that time and include addresses and telephones where I may reach you. Please write if there are any special opisthobranch happenings coming up within the next six months. I just might be able to attend some. I am seriously considering a trip to Japan and Australia during November if it can be arranged. % % % & * ADDRESS LIST Bao eeeeeed Tucker 2208 S.
