PITY THE POOR DOGS.

The National Canine Defence League desires to call
attention to the great suffering caused to dogs by making
them follow trams, omnibuses — especially electric or motor
trams and omnibuses —motor-cycles and bicycles, or even car-
riages, in hot weather, or at any time, unless at a slow pace.
A horse races only for a few minutes, but dogs are called
upon to gallop at full racing speed for many miles, perhaps
foo" hours ! It grievously overtaxes their hearts and all their
powers. Many drop utterly exhausted, and die, literally
heartbroken, by the roadside.

It is intensely distressing and sad to see a poor dog,
panting as if his body must burst, overcome by heat and
suffocated by dust, labouring frantically and painfully after
a fast-tirotting horse, a bicycle, even a motor-cycle! But it
is still more heartrending to see him running after a motor,
electric or horse tram or omnibus, in a crowded thoroughfare,
bravely and pitifully straining ever}- nerve to keep up and not
lose sight of the vehicle he follows, confused and frightened
by the medley of traffic, ever}' instant in danger of becoming
lost, and in imminent danger of death, while his caieless or
heartless owner sits at ease without a thought for his trusty
canine friend, left alone and unaided to face that terrible strain
and peril. Dogs are absolutely faithful, and will follow their
masters anywhere, through anything; but they should not be
subjected to these very severe and unnecessary ordeals. The
above-mentioned gross cruelties often result from want of
thought, and the League earnestly entreats dog owners not to
inflict them upon their dogs.
