Hulbous and Cuberous Flolvers.

aR a TS

Tuts class of Fiowering Plants, so remarkable for its combinations of varied beauties, has always commanded the admiration of Flora’s Vota- ries. The Splendid Collection which we now present, is the result of a long course of years devoted assiduously to its accumulation, and far sur- passes any other in our Country. As we have already published general lists of the different species and varieties in our Catalogue, No. 2, for 1855 and ’56, (40th Edition.) the principal object of the present Catalogue isto enumerate such other Varietics as are not specially named or described in that publication, Amateurs can, therefore, by consulting that Cata- logue, in connection with the present one, combine all the information requisite for making judicious selections of those classes of Flowers they especially desire. Every species and variety of Bulbous and Tuberous Flowers enumerated in any Catalogue in the Union, can be supplied by us, and always at as low, and in most cases at lower rates, than obtain- able elsewhere.

Orders for these Bulbous Roots should be forwarded from August to November, both inclusive. In open winters and at the South, they may be planted at any period when the ground is workable previous to Feb- ruary. Where the prices named are for Assortments, the selection of the varieties is to be made by us, but if applicants will name such as they already possess, those varieties will be omitted in our selections. It may be deemed superfluous on our part to caution Amateurs against the refuse and worthless Bulbous Roots which foreigners send annually to our Auctions, and which ignorant purchasers often re-vend throughout the interior, sometimes professing to have obtained them from credible sources. Those who desire the choicest varieties, and a selection of su- perior and perfect Roots, should be especially careful as to the source whence they obtain them.

Directions for the Culture of Bulbous Flower Roots, &c.

The most simple course of culture, is all that is required for this class of flowers.

The situation should be dry and airy; the soil a light sandy loam, and if not sufficiently light, add a portion of sand, to make it so, and enrich it by digging in a liberal quantity of old decomposed manure.

2

The best periods for planting the hardy species of Bulbs, are August to November inclusive, but it may be performed later in climates where the ground remains open. In planting, it is beneficial to strew fresh or sea sand in the trenches or openings, before and after placing the roots, so that they may be completely surrounded by sand.

Hyacinths, Persian Fritillary, Martagon, and other Lilies, should be planted at a depth of four inches; Crown Imperials and Polyanthus Nar- cissus, five inches; Tulips, Double and Single Narcissus, Jonquils, Arum, Colchicum, Snowflake, Bulbous Iris, Ponies, and Gladiolus, three inches; Crocus, Small Fritillaries, Snowdrops, Ornithogalums, and Dens Canis, two anches; Anemone and Ranunculus, one and a half inches, always measur- ing from the top of the bulb. The roots can be placed from two to six inches apart, according to their size. When planted, it will not be neces- sary to remove them oftener than every second or third year, and then it is only rendered necessary by their increase, and for the purpose of sep- arating them, and of enriching the soil.

Bulbs for Winter blooming, in pots or glasses.

Hyacinths, Polyanthus Narcissus, Roman and other Double Narcissus Jonguils, Persian Iris, Persian Cyclamen, Crocus, and Single and Double Van Thol and other Early Tulips, are the preferable species for this purpose. Those intended for glasses, should be placed in them the middle of November, the glasses being previously so filled with pure water, that the bottom of the bulb will just touch the water; then place them for the first ten days in a dark room to promote the shooting of the roots; after which, expose them to the sun and light, in an airy position, as much as possible. Rain water is preferable, and it should be changed as often as it becomes impure, at which periods, the roots should be drawn entirely out, and be rinsed in clean water.

Bulbs intended for pots, should be planted therein during the months of October or November, and be left exposed to the open air until the ground commences freezing, when they should be removed to the Green- house, or to a warm room. They will, of course, require occasional waterings, and plentifully, as the growth advances.

Bulbous Roots of American Growth.

Our Collection is the only extensive one grown on American soil, others depending almost solely on purchases or on importations. Bulbs grown here possess a great advantage over the imported ones. They form roots much sooner and more freely in glasses or pots, and conse- quently bloom earlier and more perfectly. In the open ground they possess greater vigor and increase more rapidly.

Chinese Tree and Herbaceous Peonies, &e.

Of this family of Shrubs and Plants, we may unhesitatingly pronounce our collection superior to any other in existence, as it combines the Hite of every celebrated collection in Europe, with the addition of the splendid seminal varieties which have been produced by ourselves, and which are sought after with avidity by the Amateurs of Europe. The ease with which they may be cultivated in any ordinary soil, and in the coldest lati- tudes, renders them the most desirable acquisitions, and there is certainly no Class of Flowers which affords a more brilliant and interesting display.

All classes are equally hardy.

inths,

In making selections of the varieties

suited to particular purposes, all of the single-flowering varieties, and those noted thus * among the double varieties, are the best adapted for flower- ing in glasses; but all the kinds are equally well adapted for cultivating

in pots or in the open garden.

CHINESE CHRYSANTHEMUMS.

The magnificent seminal varieties which have been latterly produced in France, Belgium, and England, have given to this beautiful class of flowers a most imposing position, and, in the gardens of the Middle and Southern States, they now supply the principal adornment, by an ever varying display of beauty during the autumnal period, when most other plants present us only the remains of departed verdure.
