This symposium will address the following topics: • an overview of climate change in the Pacific Northwest • lessons learned from past periods of change • potential marketing and tree management strategies • individual native tree species responses Climate change variables such as fire frequency, water yield and competition from invasive species will be discussed from the perspective of the PNW as a whole as well as from the perspective of individual tree species. This program is targeted to arborists, urban foresters, landscapers, park managers, and others who work with trees in landscapes. Presenters include research faculty from the UW Climate Impacts Group, UW College of Forest Resources and USDA Forest Service. This program is cosponsored by the UW Botanic Gardens and PNW-ISA. Topics to be covered include an overview of the common insects that cause problems, identification of the pests, and management strategies. Specimens will be examined in class. Bob Gara teaches urban plant protection and forest entomology in the College of Forest Resources at the University of Washington. He has over 40 years of experience conducting research on insect problems in the Pacific Northwest. This class will give you a practical, step-by-step method to design a site, whether it’s a park, residential garden, or restoration project. Learn the steps that all designers follow, from how to measure and create a base map, define space on the ground plane, establish the “bones of a space”, design to your materials, consider maintenance needs, prevent common design mistakes, and work with a client and/or contractor. Landscape Architect Kim Rooney has 12 years of local, national, and international experience designing residential landscapes, resorts, parks, and streetscapes. Kim has won a national award for her work on the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and a regional award for her work in Whistler Village while with the firm, Tom Barratt Ltd.
