Subject: "QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS." Information from the Unit
ment of Agriculture, Washington, D. C.

Homemakers, my attention has been called to a serious oversight. It
seems that I have neglected to mention one of the most delicious of all foods --
peach preserves. Last Wednesday I told you how the canning experts in the
Bureau of Home Economics can peaches, and I told you how they pickle peaches,
but, as one of my listeners reminds me, I paid no attention at all to peach

preserves.

And this listener tells me she had pencil and paper ready to write the
Fecipe. Yes -- just after she copied direction for pickled peaches, she wrote
"neach preserves" on another page in her notebook -- and I failed her.

Well, I'm sorry, and I really don't know how it happened, but I'm pre-
pared today to make amends. Just as soon as I answer a few questions, I'll
8ive you an excellent recipe for peach preserves. So be prepared -- with paper
and pencil.

Now, the questions. The first is -- Well I'll just read the letter!
"Do you have any information about roadside markets: We are going to have more
vegetables than the family can use this fall; also will have lovely flowers to
sell, and some home-made jelly. My daughter and I would like to make some pin
money, but we don't know just how to go about it. Would appreciate any sugges-
tions you can give us." Signed, "Mrs. A. L. W."

In answer to your request, Mrs. A. L. W., I have sent you a copy of
Leaflet Number 68, called "Roadside Markets," published by the Bureau of
| Agricultural Economics of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. This leaflet,
you will find, points out three "fundamentals to success," in managing a road-
Side market -- first, the location of your stand; second, the quality and
freshness of your produce -- fruits and vegetables or flowers, or whatever you
sell; and third, fair prices.

Other things that contribute to success are attractive appearance of your
Stand, your products, and the surroundings; a fairly steady supply of products
throughout the season; courteous attention to customers, and advertising of some
kind or another.

But that's all explained in the leaflet. Will others who want a copy of
"Roadside Markets" please send their names and addresses to the U. S. Department

The second question is about books. "I'm planning to help organize a
library in a farm community this fall," writes a listener, "and am wondering if
you have any information on the subject of libraries. We intend to start with
a traveling library -- just a few books at first."

The answer to this question is another publication of thé United States
Department of Agriculture. "Rural Libraries" is the name, and 1559 is the w,
number. This bulletin tells all about libraries for rural communities -- State
extension libraries, traveling, package, and direct-mail libraries; village and
municipal, school-district, township, community libraries and county libraries.

Next question: "Do you know of any repellent that will keep mosquitoes
away?"

One of the simplest and most effective insect repellents is made of oil
of citronella, svirits of camphor, oil of cedar, and olive oil. Maybe I'd better
repeat this formula. It comes, by the way, from a forest officer in the United
States Forest Service. Here it is again, a repellent to keep mosquitoes away:
Oil of citronella, one part; spirits of camphor, one part; oil of cedar, one-half
part; and a little olive oil. If your skin is very sensitive, use more olive oil.

If you go camping during the mosquito season, say the forest officers,
make camp out in the open where the wind can reach you. Keep away from wet
meadows, and from shores of lakes and streams. If you're especially sensitive
to mosquito bites, get a broad-brimmed hat, and a head net made of bobbinet,
with a string to draw it in around your neck. And if you don't want to wear a
head net, use an insect repellent, like the one I've just described.

Fourth question: "Are the National forests open to everybody for public
camping? "!

Yes, the National forests are open to everybody, they're free, and
they're never closed except when there's a severe drought, or serious danger
of fire. Do you know that there are one hundred and forty-eight National
forests, scattered over thirty-odd States and Alaska? And more than three
thousand free public camp grounds in the National forests.

But I'd better not make a detour right here, and enter the nearest
National forest, or I never will get that recipe for peach preserves off my
list. Here it is, the recipe for peach preserves:

Peel the peaches, cut them in halves and remove the pits if they are
free-stones, or cut the flesh from the pits if they are clings. To each pound
of prepared fruit use 3/4 or 1 pound of sugar. Combine sugar and fruit in
alternate layers and allow to stand overnight to extract juice. Heat slowly
tO boiling, stirring as the fruit heats. Or prepare a sirup using a9 fr cup

‘Water and 3/4 or 1 pound of sugar per pound of fruit. Add the fruit and boil
_ fapidly. Cook until the fruit is tender and clear.
