Peirse-Duncombe THE SCOTTISH ORNITHOLOGISTS’ CLUB The Scottish Ornithologists’ Club was formed in 1936 and membership is open to all interested in Scottish Ornithology. Meetings are held during the winter months in Aberdeen, Ayr, Dumfries, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, New Galloway, St Andrews, Stirling, Thurso and the Wigtown District at which lectures by prominent ornithologists are given and films exhibited. Expeditions are organised in the summer to places of ornithological interest. The aims of the Club are to (a) encourage the study of Scottish ornithology and to promote an interest in wild birds; (b) co-ordinate the activites of Scottish ornitholo- gists; (c) encourage ornithological work in Scotland; (d) encourage conservation of | Scottish birds and protection of threatened and rare species; (e) hold meetings for discussion and to arrange ornithological field meetings, and (f) appoint local recorders and publish material relating to Scottish OEUmOlegy, including Scottish Birds, the club journal, There are no entry fees for Membership. The Annual subscription is £5, or £2 in the case of Members under twenty one years of age or Students under 25, who satisfy Council of their status as such at the times at which their subscriptions fall due. The Life subscription is £100. Family Membership is available to married couples and their nominated children under 18 at an Annual subscription of £7.50, or a Life subscription of £150. Scottish Birds is issued free to Members but Family Members will receive one copy between them. Subscriptions are payable on Ist October annually. Scottish Birds, which is published quarterly, includes papers, articles and short notes on all aspects of ornithology in Scovand, The club also publishes the annual Scottish Bird Report. The affairs of the Club are controlled by a Council composed of the Hon. Breadents the President, the Vice-President, the Treasurer, and ten other Members of the Club elected at an Annual General Meeting. On the Council is also one Representative of each Branch Committee appointed annually by the Branch. The Club tie in dark green, navy or maroon terylene, a car sticker and a brooch in © silver and blue, displaying the Club emblem, a Crested Tit, can be obtained by Members only from the Club Secretary. 5 The Library at 21 Regent Terrace, Edinburgh EH7 SBT is open during office hours (Monday to Friday 9 am to 1 pm and 2 to 5 pm) and for members, by prior arrangement, in the evenings during the week in the winter months from 7 to 10 pm. The Bird Book shop 1s also at 21 Regent Terrace, Edinburgh. It is managed by the Club and the profits help to maintain services to ornithologists at the Scottish Centre. from which a free book list can be obtained. Application for Membership form, copy of the Club Constitution, and other literature are obtainable from the Club Secretary, Major A. D. A. Harvie-Brown’s first annual report on Scottish ornithology. The report is a concise summary of data collected on all species known to have occurred in Scotland in 1978. It follows the pattern established in previous reports and new readers should note that no attempt is made to define the ordinary status of most species, but for the first time species known to have bred in Scotland during the year are marked {. Generally speaking, little information is given for common breeding species as there are difficulties in recording relevant data suitable for a report of this nature (we would like to improve this in future); more information is given for some breeding species, migrants, semi- and national rarities. An asterisk * precedes a species where all known records are given. Precedence is given to peak numbers, migration patterns, first and last dates, records in unusual areas, etc. For some species, the data has been summarised in table form. : For further information readers should refer to The Birds of Scotland (Baxter & Rintoul 1953), the Status of Birds in Britain and Ireland (British Ornithologists’ Union 1971), The Atlas of Breeding Birds in Britain and Ireland (Sharrock 1977) and the previous Scottish Bird Reports, which are still available from the secretary. As before we stress that observer cover in various regions of Scotland ranges from very good to pretty thin and care should be taken in comparing numbers and regional distribution, especially of migrants. Generally speaking, the Northern Isles, the North Sea coast, central Scotland and the Clyde/Solway areas are better covered than elsewhere, but there are pockets of good cover in most regions. For some areas, more information is published and greater detail given in local reports such as the Fair Isle Bird Observatory Report, the Shetland Bird Report, The North-east Scotland Bird Report, the Angus Wildlife Review, the Isle of May Report (in Scot. Birds) and the Ayr Report. Although much local information cannot be pub- lished here, the collection of records by the local recorders provides a most useful fund of reference data for regional ornithology. The species list comprises 298 species, 26 being represented by only one individual of each species. At least 8 of these are species that have escaped, been released from captivity or are of doubtful origin; they are distinguished by the symbol + in the list. In contrast to 1975 (six) and 1976 and 1977 (four each) only two new birds were added to the 2 Scottish List, namely Common Nighthawk and Calandra Lark. There have been seven records in England of the North American cousin of the Nightjar which winters in South America, the first for Scotland was trapped and ringed at Kirkwall in Orkney on 12th September. The Calandra Lark was observed at Fair Isle on 28th April and was only the second British record of this large lark from southern Europe. Other rare vagrants were Eye-browed Thrush (2nd record) from Russia, Greater Yellowlegs (3rd) and Laughing Gull (4th) from North America. Other rare birds included 4 White-billed Divers, 9 Balearic Shearwaters (the darker race of Manx Shearwater from the Mediter- ranean), 2 Great White Egrets, Little Bittern, American Wigeon, 5 Ring-necked Ducks, 7 Surf Scoters, 2 Red Kites, White-rumped and Buff-breasted Sandpipers, Lesser Yellowlegs, Wilson’s Phalarope, Caspian Tern, Pechora Pipit, Black-throated Thrush, 3 Lanceolated Warbler (including one on a North Sea oil platform), Great Reed Warbler and White-throated Sparrow. The winter of 1977/78 was severe and there were some very heavy snowfalls; small resident birds such as Wren and Stonechat were adversely affected and the populations of some species were well down at the start of the nesting season. Overall birds were thin on the ground in the first few months of the year but large numbers of sea ducks occurred in the Moray Firth and Velvet Scoters increased to a record total of 5000 in Spey Bay in early April. Spring was almost non-existant and the migration was both late and generally on the low side; south-east winds were rather few and continental drift-migrants were scarce. Nevertheless there was an unprecedented arrival of Hawfinches in the north in April; a Woodlark on Rhum was the first in Scotland since 1973 and there was a good influx of Marsh Harriers. The summer seemed to be an extension of winter; it was cold and wet with some late snow-falls on the mountains. Terns, gulls, Shags and Black Guillemots were among species which had a very poor breeding season, in fact many of the terns had a disastrous summer. Waders and divers had a disappointing time, especially on higher and more exposed areas; heavy snow was a problem for the first Dotterel nesters. Many passerines, both residents and to a certain extent summer visitors, were low in numbers but Scottish Crossbills had a good season in Strathspey and the Chough population was high. Among rarer species, the lone albatross in Shetland sat on a nest in the Gannet colony; Whooper Swan nested successfully for the first time in many years and a pair of Scaup bred. Red-backed Shrikes nested successfully again as did Lapland Bunting. Goldeneye numb- ers increased and in fact the climate appeared to favour Scandinavian colonists to such an extent that a pair of Purple Sandpipers nested successfully for the first time in our country. Wader passage started as usual in July and there was a big autumn influx of Ruffs, Little Stints and Curlew Sandpipers; Black Terns were also well represented. Passerine migrants, ranging from thrushes 3 through warblers to finches, were all rather low due to a lack of south-easterly winds and this also accounted for the low numbers of rarities. Albeit, Reed Warblers were much in evidence in the North Isles as were Long-eared and Short-eared Owls while in the south- west, Leach’s Petrel were seen on sea-watches. Geese and Whooper Swans arrived in strong numbers after a good breeding season in the Arctic; due to the mild autumn and early winter numbers in the north remained high. There were more Brent than usual and for the first time in decades a small flock wintered in the Moray Firth. Scaup numbers in the Forth continued to drop following the change of sewage disposal at Edinburgh. The year closed with very cold weather leading into a severe winter. To keep the report within a reasonable number of pages, we have been terse; as in the past, we have abbreviated months, counties and other words (eg numbers= nos) and have omitted qualifications such as near and about. We have chosen to continue with the county names rather than the region and district names. All records given here of species that come within the scope of the British Birds Rarites Committee have been accepted by the committee unless noted as subject to acceptance. Records of species not on that list but regarded as rare in Scotland have required adequate supporting evidence before publication. We appeal to observers to submit descriptions of rare and unusual species to the local recorder as soon as possible, preferably on an unusual-record form, obtainable free from the local recorder. With such a volume of material moving from observer to local recorder to compiler to editor to printer, there is the risk of transcription errors and we will be glad to be informed of important errors. Likewise, we would be pleased to hear of significant records for earlier years. The sequence and names in the species list follow Prof K. H. Voous (1977, List of Recent Holarctic Bird Species) as published in The “British Birds” List of Birds in the Western Palearctic. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank everyone who has contributed or helped with the 1978 report, including the observers who sent in the records and especially the local recorders who collated the records and produced the area reports, and my fellow compilers, Angus Hogg (divers to falcons), Alan Brown (grouse to auks) and Ron Forrester (doves to warblers). (Crests to buntings, rarities and rare breeding birds were compiled by the editor). My thanks also to the artists whose vignettes brighten the pages: W. R. Brackenridge, J. Busby, R. Macgregor, A. D. Watson, and the late R. A. Richardson. Unfortunately I received no suitable selection of photographs of the year’s birds and I appeal for interesting ones for next year’s report. | am most grateful to Mike Rogers, secretary of the Rarities Committee, for help with details of rare birds, and also Alistair Peirse-Duncombe, Miss Valerie Thom and Mr. G. M. Ruthérford (from the printers) for help with the production of the report. LOCAL RECORDERS Shetland (except Fair Isle) R. J é Tulloch, Lussetter House, Mid Yell, Shetland assisted by B. Notice to Contributors Records should be sent to the appropriate local recorders but in cases of difficulty they can be forwarded by the editor. These records should be on one side of the sheet only, well spaced and in species order, following the Voous sequence. The only exception is that Aberdeenshire and north Kincardineshire records should be in place and date order. Observers should consult previous reports for the sort of information required. To avoid duplication of records by the recorders, names of other observers present should be given where appropriate. Notes for the year should be sent promptly, generally in early January, but some recorders prefer more frequent records and regular contributors are asked to consult local recorders about this. Reports of occasional visits to areas outwith the observer’s regular territory, such as holiday lists, should usually be sent to recorders as soon as possible. Records of rarities, including species only locally rare, should be sent to recorders without delay. To save recorders’ (often considerable) time and expense, correspondents should enclose a stamped addressed envelope or indicate that no acknowledgement is required. 47 THE BIRD BOOKSHOP The Scottish Ornithologists’ Club Dept E, 21 Regent Terrace, Edinburgh EH7 5BT Tel. 031-556 6042 We can supply any natural history book in print; over 500 new bird and wildlife titles in stock; worldwide service; low postage rates; post free to SOC members (Minimum £5); Free, 30 page booklist.
