e— New Climbing Nasturtium ~~

Madame Gunther’s Hybrids.

OR richness and variety of colors these new hybrids have no equals among Nasturtiums. There are shades of rose, salmon, brightest red, pale yellow either as self colors or spotted and striped. The foliage is mostly dark, and

contrasts very effectively with the rich colors. They are climbers and are free and continuous bloomers. Owing to the very unfavorable weather last summer seed of these as well as of other Nasturtiums is very scarce and supply is limited.

Messrs. C. C. Morse & Co., wrote us about them as follows:

“We have no mixture and never had one that can equal the one we are growing for you. We find it quite free from too much orange or yellow coloring and the field asa whole shows a good variety of colors and presents a most gorgeous appearance when in full bloom, It would be impossible to describe all the different colors but some of the most striking are as follows:— White, shaded carmine on the edges with deep maroon throat; bright carmine; bright salmon, with deep maroon throat; golden yellow, shading brown on the edges; yellow, shaded and mottled with carmine; white, with red blotches; shrimp pink, with deep maroon thoat; shrimp pink, self color; rose; bright yellow; orange, etc., etc.

We certainly find a great many colorsin your mixture that we never found in any other—some of them being impossible to describe.”

NEW Sweet PEA, °**AMERICA.’’

g@S"The only real intense scarlet Sweet Pea in existence.sq

This novelty for 1896 was originated and has been perfected by Messrs. C. C, Morse & Co, While inspecting their fields of Sweet Peas last June we found this new scarlet / and white to be the most distinct and striking variety among all the novelties, and purchased at that time the entire stock.

There is no Sweet Pea now in existence which compares with it in distinctiveness. It has a wide, finely marked blotch of scarlet on pure white ground with some scarlet veinings toward the edges of both the standard and the wings of the flower.

The only variety which could be considered an approach to it in marking is Gaiety, which, however has smaller stripes which are a light pale red. This new Pea which we have named ‘‘AMERICA”’ is sure to take a permanent place in making up

any assortment of Sweet Peas because of its very striking combination of colors. Rev, W. T, Hutchins, the Sweet Pea Specialist, writes:—

INDIAN ORCHARD, MAss., Oct. 11, ’95.—‘‘I had Messrs. Morse’s new Sweet Pea ‘America’ in bloom this summer in my collection. Itisa heavily striped variety of the intensest scarlet. Hereto- fore, Queen of the Isles has been our best scarlet striped, and it was originally au Eckford variety, but ‘America’ beatsit. When I saw it coming into bloom, I said, Queen of the Isles must give away toit. Ilike it very much, The color is so intense in contrast with the white, and it is such a bold blood red that it is well named; and in size it also excels. It isa fine grower and lavish bloomer.”’

TURNIP, New Scarlet Kashmyr.

HE bright red or purplish color ofthis Turnip gives it a striking

resemblance to a large Radish: It might readily be pronounced

one of those Radishes so persistently complained of as tasting like

Turnip. This surprisingly colored Turnip produces beautiful large,

smooth, white fleshed roots of excellent keeping quality. Although the

root looks iike a Radish it tastes like a Turnip and its attractive appear- ance is supported by high cooking qualities.

Trade Price, per Iib., 75c.

NEW MUSK MELON, “IRONCLAD.”

The Musk Melon for long distance shipping.

UT of all the extensive trials Messrs. Coy & Son carry on year after O year, this is the only Melon they considered worthy of intro- duction this year, and all who know Mr. Coy’s careful and scrupulous methods know that he would not offer a new Melon that is not alone different from known types, but also superior in some of the main characteristics. Our illustration shows the shape of the melon and the extraordinary heavy, coarse netting which renders it so partic- ularly well adapted as a shipping Melon.

C. P. Coy & Son, the originators, whose entire stock of this new Melon we bought, say of it as follows:

“It is with the second early sortsin ripening, flesh thick, deep yellow and very sweet. A strong viner and very heavy cropper. It has been bred for years to secure a /hick, leathery, shell-like skin with heavy, coarse, protective netting, with the idea of making it a perfect shipper. Ttis now fixed in type and in our opinion will fill the place of a yellow fieshed shipping Melon in good shape. Its quality is good. Tf intense sweetness is an objection, it has a fault that way.”

Trade Price, per 100 pkts., $4.00; rooo pkts., $35.00.

Our illustration of ‘IRON CLap” Musk Melon, was not finished at the time this circular went to press, we shall be pleased to mail proofs of it on application. .

BLACK DIAMOND WATER MELON.

HE Black Diamond is the result of hybridization of Kolb’s Gem and Hoosier King,. the new seedling

propagated ana improved for five years, the most critical expert selection made during this whole time by one of the most successful Melon Growers in Knox Co., Indiana, until the new type is so thor- oughly fixed that we have a distinct and the best Melon without exception for the last 20 years. Shown at the Indiana State Fairin competit- ion with all the standard Water Melons in 1895 it took the Férst Premium, and at the Knox County Fair, the greatest Water Melon County in the Northern States, it took the First Prem- ium for 1895 also.

_ All that could be said of the Kolb’s Gem as to good shipping qualities can be truthfully stat- ed in a higher degree of the Black Diamond. All the praise of high quality bestowed on the Sweetheart as to its “ontting” nicely and peculiarly sweet flavor can be repeated of our new Melon, but its pre-eminent points of merit are extreme size—no Melon ever yet producing anything like so uniformly large fruit, nor approaching it in productiveness.

Melons weighing 75 to 95 pounds are frequent, and cars loaded with specimens averaging 30 to 35 pounds each to the whole car. It is the most prolific Water Melon ever planted. One grower the past season load- ed five cars from five acres, the cars containing from 800 to 900 Black Diamonds, against 1000 to 1200 Sweethearts and in two of these cars the Melons averaged each 34 pounds in weight and after harvesting this large product had fully 1¥% cars of choice Melons lef+on his plot of five acres. The most distinctive point in its appearance is its color which is a rich dark green almost black and of such a shiny lustre as produces an effect as if the fruits were varnish- ed, if such a word can’‘illustrate the beautiful gloss on the rind of this Melon.

Of uniformly symmetrical shape, roundish to bluntly oval and this similarity of shape running through the whole field so that as one grower termed it, “they look as if turned out on a lathe.’’ The habit of the vine is ex- tremely vigorous and when planted at same time as the older standard varieties the vine growth is more rapid. Commission men giving it preference over any other Melon which they have handled, and during the latter part of last season when the sale of other kinds dragged, the Black Diamond was the only one which sold in quantity.

We have given it such thorough investigation as regards all points of merit fora market Melon that we expect it to more than confirm the praise we willingly accord it.
