Brunton Syllogeus No. 21 National Museum of Natural Sciences Musée national des sciences naturelles National Museums of Canada Musées nationaux du Canada 1979 ABSTRACT John Macoun made botanical collections in Algonquin Park, Ontario, from May to August in 1900 and reported 511 species of vascular plants from areas in what is now the western part of the park. The author has found vouchers for 410 of the reported species, most of them in the National Herbarium of Canada (CAN), some duplicates at the University of Toronto (TRT) and a few represented only in other herbaria (MIMG, QK). Sixteen species in Macoun's list are known in Algonquin Park only from his collections. An additional fifteen which he reported lack vouchers in the herbaria which were searched and require confirmation before inclusion in the present-day flora of the park. The Vascular Plant Collections of John Macoun in Algonquin Park, Ontario John Macoun, the famous pioneer Canadian naturalist, spent the summer of 1900 conducting a botanical inventory of the recently established Algonquin National Park (now Algonquin Provincial Park), Ontario. In his capacity as Chief Botanist to the Geological Survey of Canada he conducted botanical investigations of many unknown parts of Canada in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Macoun's important impact on the development of western Canada is well known (Berton 1970) and he is widely acknowledged as one of the foremost figures in the development of the natural sciences in Canada. As such, his activities are of significant historical interest as well as being scientifically important. Algonquin Park is situated on a highland area near the southern boundary of the Canadian Shield in this province. It contains the headwaters of over 15 river systems. The area was given park status in 1893 to protect these watersheds and to provide recreational opportunities. Macoun's attention was drawn to Algonquin because of a complete lack of information concerning the flora of central Ontario. He worked there, in the company of the zoologist William Spreadborough, in an effort to fill in the gaps of biological knowledge which this large wilderness area presented. Access to the Park was by the (now defunct) Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway* which ran through the southern part of Algonquin. Beyond that, travel into the Park was by canoe only and, despite his age (he was 69 years old in 1900), Macoun travelled extensively through the western part of Algonquin. The map included in this report indicates the sites at which he collected. It also indicates that Algonquin Park has been expanded in size significantly since Macoun's day and that much of the eastern part (botanically the most productive area to-day) was not included in 1900. Despite these limitations - personal and otherwise - he amassed a wealth of floristic data. Locations of the Macoun Specimens A portion of Macoun's accession list from that summer's work (covering the period June 5 to August 1, 1900) is preserved at the National Herbarium (CAN), in the National Museum of Natural Sciences, Ottawa. This list indicates the scope of his work that year and so, as a part of a larger floristic study of Algonquin Provincial Park a search was made for Macoun's Algonquin collections in the National Herbarium (CAN). This was conducted during several visits to the Herbarium in 1974 and 1975. A subsequent listing of collections (largely duplicates) was made at the University of Toronto herbarium (TRT). A few additional specimens were uncovered through correspondence with McGill and Queen's Universities, but it was evident that the vast majority was to be found in Macoun's home institution the National Museum. Specimen List The 511 species reported by John Macoun in Algonquin Park in 1900 are listed below. Following the location, the CAN accession number is given. In some cases duplicates are known from other herbaria, but this duplication is not indicated. If the specimen is maintained only in a collection other than CAN, however, that institution is noted. The location for each species is given as described by Macoun. These places are identified in modern terms in the section following the list. Species names in parentheses and without data were reported on Macoun's accession list but are no longer supported by extant specimens. In total, 410 species are supported by extant specimens (all but 14 being at CAN). The nomenclature employed by Macoun is now out-dated. In the following list we employ modern nomenclature for his records. The families are listed in the sequence followed by Fernald (1950). * In 1899 this railway was absorbed into the Canada Atlantic Railway. Acknowledgements The assistance and guidance of Dr. J.H. Settlement was quite extensive in the Cache Lake and Canoe Lake areas at that time and Macoun's collections reflect this. As well, the hardwoods of western Algonquin Park were of little commercial value until the 1920's and so the forests were less disturbed than they are today. Species Collected in 1900 which are unknown in present day Algonquin Park A flora of Algonquin Park has been prepared which indicates the present-day knowledge of the species which occur (or occurred) in Algonquin Park (Brunton ms.). Sixteen species are known only from Macoun's collections, these are: Panicum columbianum Scribn. Carex cristatella Britt. Habenaria dilatata (Pursh) Torr. Polygonum douglasii Greene Saponaria vaccaria L. Nuphar rubrodiscum Morong Ribes oxyacanthoides L. Pyrus aucuparia (L.) Gaertn. Rubus groutianus Blanch. Rubus setosus Bigel. Species Reported in 1900 (without extant specimens) presently unknown in Algonquin Park Of the 105 species listed which are not supported by extant specimens, a number would represent new records for Algonquin Park. Since sixteen species in Algonquin are known only from Macoun's specimens (above), it would seem reasonable that at least some of these unsupported records are valid. The following fifteen species not supported by vouchers appear on the list and represent the only record for these species in the park. Potamogeton foliosus Raf. Catabrosa aquatica (L.) Beaw. Solidago arguta Ait. 15 Location of Collection Sites The names of several of Macoun's prime collection sites have changed. In addition, his sites can be reasonably well located in modern times. The following comments deal with Macoun's sites in order of their significance to the species list. They are presented in the light of our present knowledge of the geography of the park. This was the park headquarters in 1900 and an important station along the (now defunct) Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway which had been built across the park between 1893 and 1896. It was much more open than it is today; there were a number of government houses and private cottages, and a few small cultivated fields (garden crops for local consumption). Opeongo Lake. - It is the largest lake in the park, spanning Sproule and Bower Townships (southern and northern sections of the lake, respectively). It is not entirely clear where Macoun was on the lake, as he only refers to it in the broadest sense. We believe, however, that his collecting was done in the Bower Township section of the lake at the then operating Dennison Farm. This was the only farm in the area, and is the only reasonable location for many of his collections, such as Nepeta, Asparagus, Artemisia, Tanacetum, Saponaria, etc. (several of which were found there in 1975). The specimens collected which do not fit into this man-associated group are aquatics or shoreline species. This would be consistent as he would have reached the farm by water, once arriving at the south end of Opeongo by railroad. Catfish Lake. - Name unchanged. In Lister Township. Macoun passed via this lake on his way to Cedar Lake in July. He collected some very rare bog orchids there (Habenaria blephariglottis, Habenaria dilatata, Arethusa bulbosa) which we could not find in a search of the apparent site (on the northeastern shore of the lake) in 1975. Cranberry Lake. - Now called Canisbay Lake, in Canisbay Township. The bog species from this location were taken at the southern extremity of the lake. Island Lake. - Now called Burnt Island Lake in McLaughlin Township - on the main canoe route into the park interior. Cedar Lake. - Name unchanged. In Lister and Deacon Townships, with a small portion in Boyd Township (which was far out of his way). There was a small settlement around a logging camp just west of the present village of Brent and this almost certainly was where Macoun concentrated his collecting. We then assume that his collections of aliens and associated weedy species were collected in Lister Township. Joe Creek. - Name unchanged. In Hunter Township. Damming along the creek has altered the situation somewhat and the section Macoun collected in would today be described as being between Little Joe Lake and Burnt Island Lake. Otterslide Creek. - Name unchanged. Running between Otterslide Lake and Big Trout Lake in McLaughlin Township. Perley's Lake. - Now known as Perley Lake. In Osler Township (and a small portion of Freswick Township). Madawaska River. - Name unchanged. This is a very long river, but as it runs through Cache Lake, and the collection dates overlap with those of collections at Cache Lake (e.g. July 4, 1900) we can safely assume that these collections were made east of Cache Lake (and close to it) in Canisbay Township. White's Lake. - Now known as Lake Tanamakoon. In Canisbay and Peck Townships. Macoun collected in the vicinity of an abandoned logger's camp, as indicated on several labels from this site. Brûlé Lake. - Name unchanged. In Hunter Township. This was also an important railroad station, with a relatively large association settlement. It is surprising that Macoun spent so little time there because there was good access to the lake. Petawawa River. - Name unchanged. Another long river, and several collection dates are associated with it. However, as these collections were made on Macoun's trip to Cedar Lake in July we can deduce which sections of the river he was on by comparing his Petawawa River dates with dates from associated lakes on the river system. The Petawawa collections are broken down as follows: Petawawa River. July 20 and July 21 - between Longer Lake and Red Pine Bay of Burntroot Lake, Bishop Township. Petawawa River. July 24 - Between Narrowbag and Cedar Lakes, Lister Township. At least two and probably all specimens were collected at Stack's Rapids (Petawawa Falls). Petawawa River. July 25 - Same section as above, probably between Stack's Rapids and Cedar Lake. Petawawa River. July 26 - Either east or west of Catfish Lake, but in Lister Township. Red Pine Lake. - Now known as Red Pine Bay, Burntroot Lake, in Bishop Township. Canoe Lake. - Name unchanged. In Peck Township. This was a very important railroad stop, and as with Brtlé Lake, it is surprising that Macoun spent so little time there. Source Lake. - Name unchanged. In Peck Township. The collections were made at the southeast end of the lake where the Little Madawaska River flows from it. Burnt Lake. - Now known as Burntroot Lake. In Bishop (southern three-quarters) and Osler Townships. White Trout Lake. - McLaughlin Township. Now considered to be two lakes, Big Trout Lake and Trout Lake. Macoun undoubtedly collected on Big Trout, as the arm of “White Trout” which is now called Trout Lake was off the main route which he was following and had he visited it we should expect to see alien species listed from the large farm complex which was there. Joe Lake. - Name unchanged. In Peck Township (mostly) and Hunter Township. It is adjacent to the railroad and was a fairly important stop. Muskoka River. - Now known as the Oxtongue River. In Peck and Finlayson Townships. This is Macoun's only collection from that river and we only have his label (identifying the specimen as a part of his Algonquin Park flora) as evidence that the collection was made in the park. It was probably made at the Tea Lake Dam, Peck Township, as a tote road ran to there from Canoe Lake. Rock Lake. - Name unchanged. In Nightingale Township. Clearly, the Cache Lake - Canisbay Lake area was the most closely collected area. As his summer's headquarters were there, this is perhaps not surprising. It is surprising, however, that Macoun so seldom travelled the railway to other areas (e.g. Rock Lake, Brûlé Lake, Canoe Lake, Rain Lake). Perhaps he felt these areas were so similar to Cache Lake that they did not warrant the detailed attention he gave the latter. Certainly he suggests in his autobiography that he was not overwhelmed by his Algonquin summer. He summed up his feelings by saying “frequently I made visits to Ottawa, thus breaking the tedium of the 17 18 summer.."$ On a more positive note, however, he went on to say “...we made many trips amongst the islands and lakes of the park and made large collections.
