Coad A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE STICKLEBACKS (GASTEROSTEIDAE: OSTEICHTHYES) NATIONAL MUSEUMS OF CANADA SYLLOGEUS is a publication of the National Museum of Natural Sciences, National Museums of Canada, designed to permit the rapid dissemination of information pertaining to those disciplines and educational functions for which the National Museum of Natural Sciences is responsible. In the interests of making information available quickly, normal publishing procedures have been abbreviated. Articles are published in English, in French, or in both languages, and the issues appear at irregular intervals. A complete list of the titles issued since the beginning of the series (1972) and individual copies of this number are available by mail from the National Museum of Natural Sciences, Ottawa, Canada. The list comprises over 2,000 references. INTRODUCTION The sticklebacks comprise a small family of fishes distributed in fresh and salt waters of the northern hemisphere. They have been studied extensively for several reasons despite their lack of economic or sporting importance. Certain species show a range of morphological variation apparently governed by selective and environmental factors thus making them interesting subjects for evolutionary investigations. In northern waters they are often an important element in the fish fauna and their ecology has been extensively investigated. Their small size and ease of maintenance in aquaria make them convenient fishes for experimental studies on the physiology and biochemistry of both them and their parasites, and their complex reproductive behaviour has attracted the attention of ethologists. The taxonomy of stickleback parasites has also received attention. A recent review of the sticklebacks by Wootton (1976) gives a bibliography of 496 references constituting 26% of the number cited here. Works on this family are widely scattered in the literature and the present bibliography aims to provide a convenient list to alleviate the tiresome and expensive literature search facing workers new to the family. It is hoped that all major and most minor works on sticklebacks are covered up to the end of 1979 in the bibliography. General works on the fish fauna of a geographical area are not exhaustively included in this survey of the literature. The author would be grateful if errors of omission and commission are brought to his attention.
