Most everyone agrees that business is better. The |
lem in the nursery trade is where to get good stock, esp
ially the smaller sizes and lining-out stock. We ha

able to furnish than we have ever done in any pre i

items. Suggest you make arrangements for your Tequire
ments early. All our stock is sold by catalog or to

service we give you. May we serve you?

PACKING. All goods are packed in boxes or baled
which we charge sufficient to cover cost of material use

we believe we have never offered hichey values than we
are offering this season. We feel sure you will be more
than pleased with the stock we send you.

From the reports we have received from many paris of
the country Lining-Out stock is the scarcest it has been in a
gocd many years therefore the prices herein may be
changed at any time and our suggestion is that you place
your order as early as convenient.

Azateas---One of our Specialties

KURUME AZALEAS

The Kurume Azaleas have been known to America only
about 15 years, but in that time they have made wonder-
ful progress as hardly a garden but what has one or more
varieties of this wonder type of Azaleas. They are also
well adapted to forcing-—thousands of them being sold for
Mother's Day, Easter and Decoration Day. They are com-
paratively easy to grow and they make such a wonderful
display that the demand is continually increasing. Many
of the varieties are hardy out of doors as far north as Long
Island. They are extremely floriferous, and in season the
blossoms completely cover the leaves. The colors are of
almost every hue and shade as you will find below.

Varieties with an asterisk * are the hose-in-hose or
double type.

Each X means one transplanting.

Our l-yr. field beds XX trans. have been grown in the green-
house one year and in outside beds one year thus making them
really two years old. The 2-yr. in field beds XX trans. are two
years from greenhouse and thus three years old.

AMOENA.* Flowers rosy purple, in dense masses. Hardy

and early flowering. The foliage assumes a pleasing
bronze tint in the fall and winter months.

AMOENA COCCINEA.* A new hardy Azalea, equally as
hardy as Amoena while in coloring it is a brilliant fiery
red. One authority thinks it will displace Hinodegiri as
it becomes better known, both as an outdoor plant as
well as for forcing.

Kaempferi and Malvatica—there has been obtained the

NEW U. 5. D. A. AZALEAS

A group of new varieties of this wonderful June-blooming
hardy evergreen Azalea released by the U. S. Department
of Agriculiure. Most of these were collected by the Depart-
ment at the Agricultural College, Imperial University Kom-
aha, in Tokyo, Japan. They have been tried out by the
U. S. Department of Agriculture staff and other interested
growers and have been selected as being worthy of intro-
duction in this country. We were one of the original grow-
ers selected to propagate these for the trade.

In ordering these Azaleas please use the number follow-

ARNOLDIANA AZALEAS

In 1914 the late Jackson Dawson, then superintendent of
the Arnold Arboretum, at Boston, Mass. created a splendid
new type of hardy Azalea by crossing Azalea Kaempferi
and Azalea Amoena. Of the seedlings thus produced a
considerable number of them were grown at Boston from
their infancy until flowering age, when the following ones
of unusual beauty and vigor of growth were selected.

Considering their hardiness, their ultimate size, bushy
form, splendid foliage, abundant bloom and desirable
shades of color, they well deserve the distinction as “the
most outstanding achievement in American plant breeding
in many years.”

All are happiest when grown in full sunlight. They are
deciduous in the north but evergreen here. The reddish-
bronze colored autumn foliage is very pleasing.

INDICA AZALEAS

The Indica Azaleas are the most attractive winter flower-
ing shrubs in the south. Varieties of Azalea Indica coming
into flower when so little else is in bloom are a mass of
beauty on private estates of the south in early spring.

While these Indica Azaleas are not dependably hardy,
even this far north, we believe they would make one of the
best pot-grown Azaleas for forcing and selling in the north-
ern markets. It would be no trouble to have them in bloom
by Christmas. Both of the sizes we are offering are nice
bushy plants, just right to go ahead with.

GLORY OF SUNNINGHILL. Vermillion red. One of the
best reds. Very dark foliage.

IVERYANA. One of the finest variegated Azaleas. Large
flowers, white with rose-pink, sometimes orange stripes.

PHOENECIA. A very fine sort, with rosy-lilac or lavender
flowers. Stands sun well.

PRESIDENT CLAYES. One of the most popular of the flame
colored Azaleas. Free bloomer; midseason.

PRINCE OF ORANGE. Orange-scarlet. Compact grower.

ROYAL RED. Probably the finest of all reds. Compact
grower and free bloomer.

VENUS. White, medium sized flowers, occasionally with
pink stripe. Compact grower, good foliage.

VITTATA FORTUNEI. Flowers mostly white with faint
lavender stripes. Blooms a long season.

Shen (Hally)

We consider the Holly one of the very best ornamental
trees or shrubs. Nothing is prettier than one of our Ameri-
can Hollies with great clusters of bright red berries and
dark green leaves shining above the snow in winter. The
nurseryman who will grow a collection of Hollies to a speci-
men size will have something he can sell whether times are
good or whether they are bad. There is always a demand
for them, and there will be as long as any other plants
will sell. We believe there is money in growing them and
will increase our stocks as fast as we can.

ILEX AQUIFOLIUM (English Holly). This is not as hardy
as the American Holly (Ilex Opaca) but can safely be
planted from New Jersey southward. The foliage is a

June; fruits late in autumn through winter. Hardy in

Taxus (Yeu)

It is only in the past few years that nurserymen in the
United States have begun to really appreciate and grow
the Yew. In England there are Yews more than a hundred
yeors old, but unfortunately the English Yew (Taxus Bac-
cata) is not reliably hardy in the north and many do not
realize that the Japanese and many form of Media are
perfectly hardy in and around Boston, and the Japanese
even in northern New England.

They are not so particular as to character of soil except-
ing it should not be too wet, but they do appreciate a plenty
of good plant food. They are immune to many plant diseas-
es and insects so destructive to many other evergreens.

The Yew in its many species and forms can be used: in
most all places where any other evergreen will do well.

We honestly believe you will do well to plant and grow
on some of these Yews.

lish churchyards. A good ornamental. Hardy as far
north as New York City. Upright, dark green foliage.

TAUXS BACCATA FASTIGIATA (Irish Yew). A strictly
fastigiate form, with stout crowded upright branches and
branchlets; leaves radially arranged around the branches,
dark glossy green, more obtuse than in the type. One of
the most desirable evergreens of columnar habit for for-
mal gardens. Do not recommend planting north of Phila-
delphia, although it is hardy on Long Island.

TAXUS CANADENSIS (Canadian Yew). Low shrub usually
diffuse and siraggling but occasionally ascending and up
to 6 feet tall. The hardiest of the Yews, but less hand-
some than the other species, one of the chief drawbacks

being the reddish tings the foliage assumes in winter.

TAXUS CUSPIDATA (Japanese Yew). For any and every
purpose in which evergreens are required the Japanese
Yew can be recommended. Perfectly hardy in New Eng-
} land and Oniario, immune from most diseases and pests.
Accomodating to an exiraordinary degree, withstanding
shade or full sunshine, dark green at all seasons of the
yecr. Small wonder this plant has been acclaimed “Jap-
an’s greatest gift io the gardens of America.” Under
this heading we are offering the spreading or wide grow-
ing type which grows as broad or broader than tall.

TAXUS HUNNEWELLIANA. A natural cross between the
Japanese and Canadian Yews. An intermediate be-
tween the parents in habit of growth, in color of foliage
and in general appearance. It is perfectly hardy and of
elegant form but in the winier the clear green of its
foliage is masked by a yellowish-bronze pigment.

or small bushy iree rarely io 30 feet tall with wide
spreading branches, usually light green; leaves about 1
inch long abruptly pointed, narrow and straight, often

and the growers made money on them, this will cause a
demand for the plants this season. We will be glad to tell

handling and carriage charges and delivers the plants to
your customer in a fresh ready to grow condition.

Let us quote you on your requirements.

AROMA. This is one of the old reliable midseason
to late varieties and extensively planted in many sections.
Produces large crops of perfect shape light red berries with
a bright green cap.

BIG JOE. In a list of the five best varieties you will
most always find Big Joe. Ripens in midseason. Does well
on most all types of soil; plant very vigorous, and product-
ive of large, bright red berries with a large green cap; good
shipper and a good seller.

BLAKEMORE. Another early variety developed by the
U.S. Department of Agriculture and we believe it the best
of all the early berries where it does well. However, it
does not seem to do as well as the Premier in some sections.
A cross between Premier and Missionary; a good plant
maker; a heavy producer of bright red berries, ripening a
little ahead of Missionary; bright green caps; medium to
large, round to conical; firm and a good keeper and shipper.

CATSKILL. An introduction of the New York Experi-
ment Station. Highly recommended and not nearly enough
plants of it to supply the demand last season. The largest
and most productive of all the midseason varieties. Con-
sidered the best midseason variety. You will be safe in
pushing Catskill especially for northern growers.

CHESAPEAKE. This is the finest dessert berry of the
late varieties and will keep better and sell at higher prices
thon any other late berry we know of. The fruit is large
and handsome and will stay so until the end of the fruit-
ing season. Berries are a rich glossy red with bright yellow
seed, have a large green cap and are very uniform size.
Chesapeake is firm and will carry to the markets in the best
of condition.

GANDY. Forty-six years old and still good as an
extra late berry if given a good fertile moist soil. The
berries are strictly fancy, large, good quality, bright red
with a large green cap. A good keeper and shipper.

DOSETT. Another early berry developed by ithe U/S.
Department of Agriculture. The berries are medium light
in color firm and of excellent flavor; in fact Dorsett and
Fairfax are considered the two best flavored of all the early
varieties. They are both good sellers bringing a premium
over all varieties in the markets. They are new varieties,
good healty growers, extra quality fruit, heavy producers,
good sellers, and the demand for planis of these two varie-
ties is probably the heaviest of any new variety ever intro-
duced. Push Dorseti and Fairfax this season.

FAIRFAX. Whai we say aboui Dorseti also applies to
Fairfax with the difference in the color of the fruit; Dorsett
is a brighier red than Fairfax but seems to be equally as
productive and as good grower. Push Fairfax and Dorsett.

GIBSON. Another old standard midseason variety.
Heavy fruiter of bright red berries with an atiractive green
cap; good for canning and preserving but does not carry
well to distant markets.

HOWARD 17. This is so near like Premier that is is
hardly possible to tell any difference although some growers
think it better.

LUPTON. One would net likely grow this variety if he
was going to eat the fruit himself as it does not begin to
have the quality of some of the others but it is very attract-
ive and shows up so well when ii arrives that it most al-
ways brings the top prices and this is what the commercial
grower is interested in. Good grower, late, attractive and
sells well.

PREMIER. For a good many years this has been the
besi plant seller of them all, hence, has been a profitable
one for the berry grower. Early, almost frost resistant,
always producing good crops, attractive, good grower, pro-
ductive, medium to large berries, and if not too wet at pick-
ing time a good shipper but if there is a lack of sunshine
the berries do not keep well. In some sections they will
not plant anything else for a crop of early berries. Plant
it; sell it. We have the nicest lot of Premier plants this
season that we have ever grown and will appriciate your
orders.

SENATOR DUNLAP. The old reliable midseason vari-
ety. Still considered very highly in some sections, especi-
ally for canning. Our plants are nice this season.

WM. BELT. This is one of the best flavored of the late
berries. The berries are irregular in shape, fairly large,
brighi glossy red with a green cap. For the home garden
or local market Wm. Belt is still good.

FALL BEARERS. These berries are now so generally
known that it is hardly necessary to say much about them.
Mastodon is recognized as being the best for commercial
purposes. Champion or Progressive is the old standard
one and probably the best flavored. Gem is one of the
newest ones and highly recommended by the introducers
but does not seem to ke anything extra here in the east.
We suggest you make your reservations early as the dry
weather has curtailed the crop this season.

Native Peat or Wood's Mold

To grow Azaleas and Rhododendrons successfully
you must have leaf mold, peat in some form or some
similar substance. We have used Russian, German
tand Holiand Peat, leaf mold collected from under
trees in our local forests, but by far the best material
we have ever used is a form of native peat, a deposit
‘of which we have found near here. It runs from
‘twelve to twenty four inches thick and is composed
» of thoroughly decayed leaves and other material from

hardwood trees which has been generations in the

making. We fully recommend this for use in grow-
; ing stock and to use in a mixture of soil and sand
» in which to sow seeds but we do not recommend it
‘for use in propagating evergreens and other soit
wooded shrubs by cutt.ngs.
