Good Stock at Lower Prices

We hope we will not appear boastful when we say, “We believe we have as good lining- out stock as can be found anywhere.” Our sales help convince us that this is true. They showed a material increase over the previous season, which was the best we ever had.

This season we are offering a larger stock than we have ever grown before and in some cases we have lowered the price in spite of the increased cost of most everything that en- ters into the production of this stock.

For this increase in your orders we want to “Thank You” and it is truly from the depths of our heart.

To you who can, we invite you to come and see our stock, but if you cannot come and will leave it to us we believe you will be pleased with the stock we send you. If you are not we want you to let us know about it. We will do everything we possibly can to send you such stock as we would want to use in our own planting.

We do not have as large or complete a stock of specimen sizes as we usually have. Some in fairly good supply and some entirely ex- hausted as you will see by our offerings.

Again we ask you to come and see it or if you cannot come send your order and leave it to us to please you.

Azaleas

Azaleas have been one of our specialties for many years. This season we are pleased to offer the largest stock we have ever grown, and at reduced prices, too. If you have not been getting your Azaleas—Lining-Out or Spe- cimen—from us we wish you would try ours this season. We aim to please you with Azaleas as well as with our other stock.

Varieties with an asterisk * are the hose-in-hose or double type.

Each X means one transplanting.

Our l-yr. field beds XX trans. have been grown in the green- house one year and in outside beds one year thus making them really two years old. The 2-yr. in field beds XX trans. are two years from greenhouse and thus three years old.

KURUME AZALEAS

The Kurume Azaleas have been known to America only a- bout 20 years, but in that time they have made wonderful progress as hardly a garden but what has one or more varie- ties of this wonderful type of Azalea. They are also well adapted to forcing—thousands of them being sold for Mother's Day, Easter and Decoration Day. They are comparatively easy to grow and they make such a wonderful display that the demand is continually increasing. Many of the varieties are hardy out of doors as far north as Long Island. They are extremely floriferous, and in season the blossoms completely cover the flowers. The colors are of almost every hue and shade as you will find below.

NEW JU. S. D. A. AZALEAS

A group of new varieties of this wonderful June-blooming hardy evergreen Azalea released by the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Most of these were collected by the Department at the Agricultural College, Imperial University Komaba, in Tokyo, Japan. They have been tried out by the U. S. Depart- ment of Agriculture staff and other interested growers and have been selected as being worthy of introduction in this country. We were one of the original growers selected to propagate these for the trade.

In ordering these Azaleas please use the number following the name, this will insure getting the variety wanted.

Rideway’s color chart used as a guide to colors.

Our l-yr. field beds XX trans. have been grown in the green- house one year and in outside beds one year thus making them really two years old. The 2-yr. in field beds XX trans. are two years from greenhouse and thus three years old.

Each 10 100 1000 BENI KIRISHIMA (No. 77113 R. Indicum). A semi-double form; the flowers are old-rose to Eugenia-pink.

KAEMPFERI HYBRID AZALEAS

In these new Kaempferi Hybrids—the result of crossing Kaempferi and Malvatica—there has been obtained the hardi- est type of evergreen Azalea, with a good range of form and color in the flowers so far achieved. Several years tests have demonstrated that these new Hybrids are just as hardy as Kaempferi, until now the hardiest of the evergreen sorts.

ARNOLDIANA AZALEAS

In 1914, the late Jackson Dawson, then superintendent of the Arnold Arboretum, at Boston, Mass., created a splendid new type of hardy Azalea by crossing Azalea Kaempferi and Azalea Amoena. Of the seedlings thus produced a consider- able number of them were grown at Boston from their infancy until flowering age, when the following ones of unusual beauty and vigor of growth were selected.

AZALEAS AND CAMELLIAS By H. H. Hume

Interest in Azaleas and Rhododendrons is greatly increasing. Until now, little information on varieties, care and culture of these plants has been available. Mr. Hume accurately and thor- oughly describes the varieties best suited for various uses and discusses questions on culture, such as soils, fertilization, plant- ing, propagating, and general care, indoors and out. He has taken special care to describe accurately the several groups and varieties, and his suggestions on the use and culture are very practical. If you are growing Azaleas and Rhododendrons you will find this book much help. While the book is titled Azal- eas and Camellias it applies equally to Rhododendrons. $1.50.

llex--Holly

We consider the Holly one of the very best ornamental trees or shrubs. Nothing is prettier than one of our American Hollies with great clusters of bright red berries and dark green leaves shining above the snow in winter. The nurseryman who will grow a collection of Hollies to a specimen size will have some- thing he can sell whether times are good or whether they are bad. There is always a demand for them, and there will be as long as any other plants will sell. We believe there is money in growing them and will increase our stocks as fast as

we can.

Each 10 100 1000

ILEX AQUIFOLIUM (English Holly). This is not as hardy as the

American Holly (Ilex Opaca) but can safely be planted from

New Jersey southward. The foliage is a bright glistening

Because—

LOW COST—1/30 to 1/50 of a cent per cutting.

SIMPLICITY—No skill is needed to apply ROOTONE. No measure- ments, no vials, no elaborate charts to follow, or clock-watching are needed. Just dip and plant.

SPEED OF ROOTING—The time for rooting of cuttings is cut by ROOTONE treatment to anywhere from one-half to one-tenth of the time required without treatment.

SURENESS OF ROOTING— Cuttings that root with difficulty such as holly, magnolia, arbor- vitae, lilac and dogwood will re- spond in greatly increased percent- ages and in much shorter time.

2 WEEKS QUICKER ROOTING

On our check plots of Azalea Hinodegiri this summer we could pot the rooted cuttings a little over 2 weeks earlier where we _ used ROOTONE than where we did not. This meant a lot as it helped us to get two crops of rooted cuttings in one season.

CHERRY HILL NURSERIES, West Newbury, Massachusetts, says: “‘We have your letter of November 30th in regard to our experience with Rootone. We have used this on a variety of material and have found that in most cases it produces better root growth than the check material which was put in at the same time untreated. The powder is much easier to use than liquid form. We have found it very satis- factory for use on Daphne cneorum and ali that class of plants which might give a fair stand but which gives a larger percentage of cuttings striking when Rootone is used.”’

No solution or soaking treatment is necesary. Just dip the base of the cutting in the dry powder and set in the propagating bed or cold frame.

We recommend ROOTONE be- cause we have found it of much help to us in rooting cuttings both in saving of time and in increased roots to the cutting. We use it on all the cuttings we put in except the ones for checking for compari- son of results. We know it pays us both in better roots and time saved in cutting beds.

GERBING’S AZALEA GARDENS, Fer- nandina, Florida, says: ““Replying to your favor of the 30th, certainly you may use my letter or any part of it for Roctone ad- vertising. Since writing you last year what I thought of Rootone I have had another year to try it out, I would not want to be without it again. It has made sure my pro- pagation of Camellias which before using Rootone was always a gamble. This year I have rooted more than 30,000 Camellias with less than $10.00 worth of Rootone. That is certainly economical enough. Thanks for putting out such a fine trouble free product.’’

Special Strength

For those who want a stronger powder for use on woody cuttings, we have “ROOTONE No. 10.” This is priced at $10.00 per pound and is made to order. It produces more roots on such cuttings as hemlock, spruce and azalea mollis.

The Plant Hormone Powder

ROOTONE is a general stimulant for plants, supplying extra hormone at times when the plant is able to use more than Nature provides.

TRANSPLANTONE

The Vitamin Hormone Stimulant For Plants

When seedlings, plants, shrubs or trees are transplanted, roots are usually dam- aged to some extent and growth is tem- porarily checked. The beneficial effect of Vitamin B-1 and other parts of the Vitamin B complex on roots have been established in research work by leading plants physiologists.

These chemicals and root forming hor- mones are combinéd in TRANSPLAN- TONE to enable jransplants to rees- tablish themselves tore readily.

Thus a treatmeyt of TRANSPLAN- TONE will stimulate old roots, hasten the formation of new ones and reduce the risk of interrupted growth or loss of plants.

WHAT ABOUT VITAMIN B-1?

Vitamin B-1 is necessary for root growth. Plants that lack this vitamin grow better when TRANSPLANTONE is fed to them. For plants that have enough B-1, TRANSPLANTONE is ef- fective because it contains other import- ant stimulating vitamins and chemicals. TRANSPLANTONE is a balanced vita- min hormone stimulant for plants in general.

New Waterlily Magnolia

STELLATA WATERLILY. This is the new Magnolia. It is now to be called ‘“‘Water Lily’’ Magnolia, on account of its re- semblance to a waterlily and its sweet fragrance.

We sent out a good many of these plants last spring and those who have seen it in bloom are very enthusiastic about it. We believe if you are interested in Magnolias you should try one or more plants so as to see for yourself just how wonderful it is.

TYPE OF GROWTH: This plant grows in a pyramidal shape. more bushy and twiggy than the M. Stellata. It is a faster growing plant than the M. Stellata, but not as rapid as the Soulangeana, the branches being much more slender. It bears flowers in great profusion.

TIME OF BLOOMING: Approximately two to four weeks later than the Stellata.

DESCRIPTION OF FLOWERS: Flowers are well placed on ends of branchlets, measuring from 4l4 to 6 inches across. The flowers consist of three to five layers, running from twenty to thirty-two petals, which have more character than the Stellata and stand in a more upright position.

COLOR OF FLOWERS: Blush pink, buds flesh pink, fading to white. This magnolia is slightly darker than the M. Stellata

Rosea, but does not have the purplish tint of the Stellata Rosea.

TROWBRIDGE GRAFTING WAX

Probably the best known Grafting Wax on the market. It formulated about 86 years ago and consists of high grade Gum Resin, Beeswax and Tallow. Extreme care is exercised in blending these ingredients in order that Trowbridge Graft- ing Wax may be possessed of the most even consistency and elasticity of any.

Trowbridge Grafting Wax is preferred by most nurserymen and orchardists since it may be used either by the warmth of the hands or melting in a suitable melting pot. When used by the hands, one should grease their hands well when using it. When used by melting, the wax is applied with a small brush.

It is used for grafting, budding, top working, etc., of all kinds of fruit, ornamental trees, shrubs and vines. It is unexcelled for use in painting cuts, bruises and after trimming.

Price 50c per pound, 10 lbs. or more at 40c per pound.

Rhododendrons

Most everybody agrees that Rhododendrons are among the most showy of all flowering plants, and most everybody would also like to grow some but the price has always been a great drawback to quantity planting. We believe you will find our prices low enough so that you can resell them at a fair price and still make a good profit. This collection is among the very best of the hardy hybrid varieties; all good growing and good flowering kinds. Push them a little and see how your sales increase.

Send us a trial order for Rhododendrons. We know you will like what we send you. Each 10 100 1006

Taxus=-Yew

It 1s only in the past few years that nurserymen in the United States have begun to really appreciate and grow the Yew. In England there are Yews more than a hundred years old, but unfortunately the English Yew (Taxus Baccata) is not reliably hardy in the north and many do not realize that the Japanese and many forms of Media are perfectly hardy in and around Boston, and the Japanese even in northern New England.

They are not so particular as to character of soil excepting it should not be too wet, but they do appreciate a plenty of good plant food. They are immune to many plant diseases and insects so destructive to many other evergreens.

The Yew in its many species and forms can well be used in most all places where any other evergreen will do well.

We honestly believe you will do well to plant and grow on some of these Yews.

Hardy Amaryllis—Magic Lily

We have, at last, a good stock of bulbs of this most interesting plant. Great big husky fellows. At 10 for $4.00; 100 for $35.00.

This bulb, also known as Lycoris Squamigera, is a native of Japan and one of the most interesting members of the Amaryllis family. It produces attractive green foliage in the spring which disappears in midsummer. About a month later, as if by magic, the flower stock appears, bearing a cluster of 7 to 12 fragrant lily-shaped flowers of delicate lilac-pink, shaded blue. Per- fectly hardy in the northern states and may be left in the ground year after year unmolested.

BIG JOE. One of the midseason varieties that is very good where conditions suit and not worth much if they don’t.

BLAKEMORE. This is hard to beat as an early berry in many sections. Always sells well and generally produces good crops. Very good the past season. Easy to grow.

CATSKILL. An iniroduction of the New York Experiment Station. Highly recommended. The largest and most product- ive of all midseason varieties. Considered the best midsea- son variety. You will be safe in pushing Catskill especially for northern growers.

CHESAPEAKE. This is the finest dessert berry of the late varieties and will keep better and sell at higher prices than any other laie berry we know of. The fruit is large and hand- some and will siay so until the end of the fruiting season. Berries are a rich glossy red with bright yellow seed, have a large green cap and are very uniform size. Chesapeake is firm and will carry to the markets in the best of condition.

DORSETT. An iniroduction of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Early, of most excellent flavor. Generally good except in few sections does not do so well.

FAIRFAX. Another U. S. Depariment of Agriculture intre- duction. A better later and of equally as good flavor as Dor- sett. One of the best early-midseason varieties.

FROSTPROOF. A wesiern variety of many good qualities among which is iis great resistaice io frost.

GANDY. For fifty years has been considered one of the very best real laie varieties.

LUPTON. One would not likely grow this variety if he was going to eat the fruit himself as it does not begin to have the quality of some of the others but it is very attractive and shows up so well when iit arrives on the market that it almost always brings the top prices and this is what the commercial grower is interested in. Good grower, laie, atiractive and sells well.

PATHFINDER. A new variety originating at the New Jer- sey Agricultural Siation. This berry has attracted much favor- able attention among growers and others who hove seen it in fruit. Especially recommended where Premier does well and is a few days later in fruiting. We suggest you push it.

PREMIER. For a good many years this has been the best plant seller of them all, hence, has been a profitable one for the berry grower. Early, almost frost resistant, always produc- ing good crops, atiractive, good grower, productive, medium to large berries, and not too wet at picking time a good shipper but if there is a lack of sunshine the berries do not keep well. In some sections they will not plant anything else for a crop of early berries.

SENATOR DUNLAP. For many years this has been very

heavily planied in the middle west and continues to be in heavy demand. Early midseason. Good grower.

FALL BEARERS. These berries are now so generally known that it is hardly necessary to say much about them. Mastodon and Gem are considered the best of all the Fall Bearers and are by far the best sellers. Both are large and fairly productive.

Blueberries

These blueberry plants are a source of superlatively fine fruit, but also are ornamental shrubs of rare beauty. They may well be used in association with their close relatives, laurel and rhododendron. In pleasant contrast to the rich, evergreen masses of the latter, blueberries give lightness, grace and color.

In spring, the dainty new leaves of blueberries with their pinky, bronze tone are very lovely. Even more charming are the carmine-tipped buds and myriads of waxy, white flower bells. The berries, at first green flushed with pink on the sunny side then ripening to a lovely soft blue, are exceedingly beautiful till past midsummer. To no foliage does autumn bring a more glorious and lasting crimson. When the gorgeous leaves drop there remain all winter bright red twigs, knobby with the fat buds enfolding the promise of next spring's flowers.

Description of Varieties

RUBEL. A vigorous, productive variety. Well developed bushes stand six feet high and the winter color of the young wood is a rich red. The large berries of fine color are usually ready to pick the first week in July.

CABOT. The earliest variety. Plants seldom exceed three feet in height and make a broad low bush. The color of the new growth in winter is a light red over olive. The large berries have a delicious sub-acid flavor.

RANCOCAS. The bush of slender, vigorous, upright habit rare- ly surpasses five feet in height. The winter twigs are a dark red. The berries are somewhat larger than those of Rubel and begin to ripen several days earlier.

CONCORD. The bush is of upright habit and at maturity ex- ceeds six feet in height. The young growth is bright red in winter. The berries are large, frequently reaching three- quartrs of an inch in diameter. They usually ripen a few days earlier than Rubel and are fine in flavor and appear- ance.

JERSEY. The bush is of vigorous habiit and grows very large. The winter color of the young growth is a light red over golden brown. The berries are the largest of any here listed, light blue and ripen about the same time as Rubel.

Native Peat or Wood's Mold

To grow Azaleas and Rhododendron: successfully you must have leaf mold, peat in some fo n or some similar substance. We have used Russian, G-er-nan and Holland Peat, leaf mold collected from under trees in our local forests, but by far the best material we have ever used is a form of native peat, a deposit of which we have found near here. It runs from twelve to twenty four inches thick and is composed of thoroughly decayed leaves and other material from hardwood trees which has heen generations in the making. We fully recomriend this for use in grow ing stock and to use in a mixiure of soil and sand in which to sow seeds but we do not recommend it for use in propagating evergreens and other soft wooded shrubs by cuttings.

If you would like to try it we will send you a two-bushel bag for $1.00. Will quote special prices on larger lots. Try a sample bag, we believe you will like it so well you will want more.
