popularity as they become better known. Whoever sees the flowers admires them. Among the latest of Asters, they are ideally suited to all florists and Formerly general commercial uses. See Page 12. of Rochester, New York

JAMES VICKS SEEDS, 4015 Clarissa St, Philadelphia.

The exacting and laborious process of pollinating Petuntas.

Petunias, the Large-Flowered and Double sorts, do not naturally set seed, but must be hand- pollinated in order to induce seed production. The pollen from one flower is transferred to another on a little camel’s hair brush. This is a tedious and painstaking process, and the seeds produced are consequently quite expensive. That is why we are proud to offer the famous Flufiy Ruffles mixture of Giant Petunias at only 10c for a packet—See the Back Cover of this book.

There are quite a few new flowers worthy of the florist’s attention. Among these are the new Rustproof Snapdragons, the new Double Nasturtiums, and, of course, the Wilt-Resistant Asters. On Pages 13 and 14 the newer varieties of flowers are listed. Among these are All-American flowers for 1936. These varieties have received so much publicity that the florist will find it to his advantage to grow them. Capitalize on the interest in All-American varieties—see the list on Page 13.

Vicks has long been famous for Asters. We have introduced more varieties than all other seedhouses in this country combined. It was primarily the demand for our Aster Seed that first caused us to issue this book. For Wilt-infested soil, we recommend planting Wilt- Resistant Asters. This year we offer Wilt-Resistant strains of many different Asters. We hope soon to offer all Asters Wilt-Resistant.

Besides flowers Vicks offer all the very best new vegetable varieties, as well as the tried and tested old favorites. The market gardener will find it to his advantage to plant Vicks guaranteed Vegetable Seed.

Wilt-Resistant. Midseason. Aster growers everywhere will be de- lighted with this new Aster. First, it is yellow, that color so rare to the Aster family, and second, the flowers are large, thick, with several rows of wide yellow guard petals surrounding the crested, cushion-like centers. They keep for a long time after cutting and have proved excellent shippers. The big blooms are borne freely with long stems on vigorous, branching plants.

Late. Immense, pure white, beautifully formed blooms that promise to be of the greatest value to the commercial grower and florist. It is a quality Aster, the blooms measuring 4, 5 and 6 inches across. When they open they appear quilled, for the petals are folded lengthwise, but as they expand the long petals become quite flat. The plants are luxuriantly branching, meas- uring 2 feet in height, with long, sturdy, very graceful stems.

Therefore this new one, with its dark, rich purple color, and its magnificent form and large size should merit your trial. For a succession of Asters include early (varieties on this page),

midseason, and late varieties in your planting. You will profit by

trying some Asters which you have not grown before, for it is almost

certain that some, or at least one of them, will be useful and a profit to you. Asters are every year vastly improved.

Vicks Royal or Early Branching Aster

Vicks Royal or Early Branching Asters

Considered the best of the early Asters. The Royals have branching plants and flowers similar to Vicks Late Branching. In bloom almost simul- taneously with Queen of the Market, it is superior to that variety in size, quality and productiveness. An early Aster of its quality is a sure money maker. Royals succeed where other Asters fail, and are adapted to green- house culture.

Our stock of seed, however, is American grown and, we find, superior to the original type. It is extra- early, very vigorous, and _ yields large, salable blooms in great abundance. OUTSTANDING ASTERS FOR MIDSEASON BLOOM

Giant Crego

or Branching Comet Asters Vicks Own Strain

Great double flowers of the true ragged Comet type. Enthusiastic growers in many parts of the country praise our Cregos.

Vicks Cregos resemble the branching Asters in size of plant, in habit of growth, and in season of bloom. The flowers are produced about the middle of the Aster season. Crego Asters are exceptionally fine for cutting. The blooms always find ready market—and good prices—for the Crego is one of the best-known and most popular of Asters, with long, narrow, loosely arranged petals gracefully curled and interlaced, making a flower rather similar to that of the Rochester. Good long stems. Plants about 2 feet tall.

Ostrich-Plumed Aster

1068—Indian Summer

Bright, rich terra-cotta rose, a delightful shade different from any other Aster that we know. Its coppery richness is displayed to perfection in the long, narrow, plumy petals, and its copper sheen lends it warmth and glow. The 3-inch flowers have a real ostrich-plume appearance. The branching plants are of sturdy growth, 21% feet tall.

1217—Ball’s White WR

An excellent cut flower Aster. It is pure white, very thick and double, the ball-shaped flowers measuring 3 to 4 inches across. They are long-lasting when cut, and have long, strong stems. The branching plants are 2 feet tall, and this variety is classed either as a medium early, or early midseason Aster.

qs OZ. 20c; 14 oz. 30c; 14 oz. 50c; oz. $1.50.

1149—Crimson Giant WR

Rich brilliant crimson, the enormous flowers resemble those of the American Beauty (see Page 7). Crimson Giant is a quality Aster of real merit, of value to both home gardener and florist. The length of the stems—15 to 18 inches—increases their value for cutting. Upright plants 214 feet tall.

The introduction of Wilt-Resistant varieties is responsible for a great

renewal of interest in Asters, for everywhere gardeners were ceasing

to grow them because of trouble from Aster Wilt. Now this spring

more Asters than ever will be planted as the public becomes acquainted

with Wilt-Resistant varieties, and realizes that with them can be had/a fine healthy planting of this Queen of Autumn Flowers.

OUTSTANDING ASTERS FOR MIDSEASON BLOOM

Giant and Super Giant Varieties which may be depended upon to make an Impressive Display

The grower of Asters for cut flowers should not overlook his oppor- tunity to market small Aster plants. To sell small Aster plants at a profit, they should be well grown, and healthy-appearing. A better price can be asked for novelties. The grower who has,no market for his plants might well contact local garden clubs, since members of these clubs are usually interested in securing good plant material.

Double California Giants

This improved strain of California Giants possesses all the good points an up-to-date Aster should have—large double flowers, long stems, and excel- fent keeping qualities. A new Aster, its huge flowers are feathered and fluffy, and very deep like huge Japanese Chrysanthemums. The plants grow 2 to 3 feet high with long wiry branches measuring 18 to 24 inches in length, making this one of the most desirable cut flower varieties on the market. The size of the flowers, 5 inches across or more not being unusual, is notable. Beau- tiful colors.

Super Giants

Much like the Giants of California (illustrated at the left), these Super Giant flowers come into bloom earlier, and are much larger. Not only are they larger but deeper, and more full-centered. The Super Giants are the newest and finest of the so-called ‘‘shaggy” Asters. Though the flowers measure 6 and often 8 inches in diameter, the curling and interlacing of the petals gives them a light, feathery, most artistic appearance. The plants are 214 to 3 feet tall, and the flowers are carried on quite long stems.

The Florist’s Favorite

Everyone who has grown our Pink Enchantress knows that all the praise received by this splendid commercial Aster is more than deserved. For Pink Enchantress is always beautiful, always arouses the interest of the florist’s prospective customer. Its color is soft delicate pink that does not fade. The fully double flowers are unusually lasting, both on the plant and when cut. The upright plants are vigorous with long graceful stems. No wonder Pink Enchantress is grown in large quantities by commercial growers. The loosely arranged, delicately colored flowers always give a charming effect.

The Celebrated King Asters

1108 Mixed Colors. The King Asters are distinct in their flowers, with vigorous, sturdy plants 114 to 2 feet tall. The flowers have long, narrow petals folded lengthwise until almost quilled, which gives them a bold and striking appearance. King Asters are equally desirable for bedding and cutting purposes. The flowers have unusual keeping quality, lasting longer than those of any other class.

Y% oz. 25c; 1% oz. 40c; oz. $1.25.

Among the greatest advances made recently in Aster development is

in color. Today, in place of the fading pastels and the rather crude

darker colors, we have beautiful soft shades, and Asters whose col-

oring shows great depth and intensity. New and finer varieties are

supplementing the old commercial favorites. Every commercial

grower should test out the American Beauties, for they are considered by many to be superior to the Late Branching.

Vicks Famous

Late Branching Asters

Our Own Introduction

The popularity of Vicks Branching Asters continues to grow. Today more seed of this is sold than any other Aster. While many other varieties are needed in any well-proportioned crop of Asters, few who grow for market could afford to be without a large planting of this exceptionally fine strain. Vicks Branching Asters are catalogued by many reliable seedsmen, from whom it would be perfectly safe for florists to order, but we urge planting the originator’s own stock.

Bear in mind that Vicks Branching is being steadily improved so that it surpasses the type sold only a few years ago, and is still among the best late commercial varieties. Plants are extra large, of strong and vigorous growth, yielding flowers from the middle of August until heavy frost. The flowers are of large size, and stand erect on stems frequently 2 feet long. 2 to 3 feet tall.

Sunshine Asters 1240—Mixed, All Colors

Recommended as one of the finest cut-flower Asters ever introduced. It is a highly developed, easily grown Aster, as valuable to home gardener as florist. Only the gerbera can compare to it in grace.

The California Sunshine is an improved strain of the Anemone-Flowered Aster. The flowers are much larger, frequently measuring 4 to 5 inches across. The long, loosely placed petals give an airy, lace-like, charming effect, and the quilled center of yellow, blue, or lavender, is very lovely. Sturdy, upright- growing, with extra-long stems, they are included among the foremost cut- flower Asters. We offer a mixture of pastel colors.

ze 0Z. 20c; 44 oz. 30c; 4 oz. 50c; oz. $1.50.

The value of trying some of the newer Asters together with the old favorites is demonstrated by the success that Aster growers have had with their California Sunshine Asters. So unusual and beautiful are the flowers that only the gerbera can rival them in grace. Each season more flower lovers discover what truly marvelous Asters they are. The demand for Sunshine Asters is constantly increasing.

Vicks Superb “PEERLESS” Asters

All Varieties marked WR (Wzlt-Resistant) are bred for Resistance and are practically immune to Aster Wilt

The importance of sowing the best Aster seed cannot be over-empha- sized. It is not your investment in seeds that counts—it is your returns from it. The returns from your crop are dependent upon its quality, and quality products can only be grown from fine seeds. Sow Vicks famous Aster seed for best results with larger and finer Asters.

Aster, Peerless Blue (WR)

Each of the three Peerless Asters is so highly meritorious that it is known as an individual rather than asa member of the group. Wherever the Peerless Asters are displayed, they always attract interested attention. The flowers, freely double and quite globular, have long wiry stems. The branching plants are vigorous, growing 214 to 3 feet tall. Yet it is for their colors that Peerless Asters are most famed.

1207—Vicks Peerless Yellow

This is the famous Peerless Yellow which remains the best and most satisfactory Yellow Aster in spite of other yellows introduced more recently. True, light yellow, Peerless Yellow is one of the most unusual—the most notable of all our introductions. Plant the originator’s seed of this favorite. So numerous, so large are the flowers that each plant is completely covered— like a yellow dome. A single plant will frequently have from twenty to thirty good stems of sufficient length, with flowers of ample size for fancy cut- flower purposes. The flowers are large, remarkably full and ball-shaped, with centers deeply covered with curled and twisted petals. They are so double that little seed is produced, so the seed is rare.

SELECT STRAINS OF LATE FLOWERING ASTERS

That Have Helped To Make Vick Famous

Vicks Silvery Asters

Wilt-Resistant 1215—Vicks Silvery Pink WR

Late. The Silvery Asters are so named because of the delicate silvery sheen which overlies the predominating color—adding charm, distinction, beauty. Vicks Silvery Pink is warm glowing pink. When the light strikes the flowers, it is reflected in a glowing silvery sheen, making them appear almost white, and creating an indescribably beautiful effect. The 2 to 3 foot plants are very vigorous, with long stems that increase the value of the flowers for cutting.

zs oz. 20c; 14 oz. 35c; 14 oz. 60c; oz. $1.75.

1216—Vicks Silvery Rose WR

Late. Silvery Rose is the original Silvery Aster. The silvery effect given by the flowers of this variety is due to each petal being deep lilac-rose, almost cerise, with very delicate threading of white. The threads are so tiny that they give the petals their silvery sheen rather than a striped appearance. Even the slightest change in light will change the color from glowing rose to silvery rose, and lights and shadows are con- stantly at play over the beautiful blooms.

qs 0Z. 20c; 14 oz. 30c; 14 oz. 50c; oz. $1.50.

1195—Vicks Autumn Glory WR

A Money Maker for the Commercial Grower

Latest of Asters. Autumn Glory blooms after the other Late Asters are past their prime, and before the chrysanthemums are well on the market. With the Mammoth Peony-Flowered it prolongs the Aster season by two weeks, coming at a time when good flowers are scarce.

Pure sea-shell pink, the flowers are very double and are borne on stems of unusual length. Though similar to Mary Semple (Late Branching) in color, Autumn Glory has a better, more substantial flower, and a deep and longer-keeping color. While Autumn Glory cannot take the places of varieties like Pink Enchantress or Peerless Pink, it supplements them by blooming later. It is always uniformly true to color and type. 214 feet tall.

qs oz. 20c; 14 oz. 30c; 14 oz. 50c; oz. $1.50.

For wide range of color, beauty of flowers, general usefulness, and

popularity, no other annual flower can compare with the glorious

Aster, Queen of Autumn Flowers. Nine-tenths of the better known

Aster varieties were introduced by James Vick. For best results with

Asters, plant the originator’s own strain. Vicks Asters are famous for quality.

Vicks Incomparable Heart of France (WR)

Wilt-Resistant. Rich ruby-red, it retains lits place as the most popular Aster in the world. Not only florists, but home gardeners too, prize Heart of France. Yet this is only one of the many Asters that James Vick introduced. For best results with your Asters, plant the originator’s own true seed strains.

Mammoth Peony-Flowered Asters

A new type of Aster—rather similar in type of flower to the Perfection Aster but the flowers of Mammoth Peony-Flowered are considerably larger. The petals are so arranged that the huge blooms really do closely resemble peonies. An average-sized bloom will measure 4 to 5 inches across, and fully as deep. Long-stemmed, they open after most varieties are past their prime, making this one of the most late flowering of all Asters. The upright-growing 21% to 3 foot plants are very vigorous.

1130 Azure Fairy. Beautiful, clear azure blue flowers with silvery reflex.

1131 Maiden’s Blush. Delicate flesh-pink overlaid with warm pink.

1132 Peach Blossom. Aptly named, it has all the love- liness of a peach blossom.

1128 Purple Robe. Large, very thick flowers of a very deep shade of purple-blue.

1127 Rosebud. Lustrous as an opening rose.

1129 Silvery Rose. Delicate lavender-pink with silvery tones and rosy depths. :

1133 Swansdown. Magnificent, well-rounded, snowy white big blooms.

1134—Mixture of Colors

The seven colors, described above, blend together beautifully, making this a prize mixture which florists will find useful. Peony Asters are admirably adapted to growing for market and are excellent for shipping. The class is a new one, the colors those soft lovely ones which now are being developed.

qs 0z. 20c; 1% oz. 30c; 14 oz. 50c; oz. $1.50.

1213—Heart of France Wilt-Resistant Strain

The most popular Aster—a “‘record seller.’’ It is the best pure red Aster of its type. Heart of France was introduced and named by us during the World War. Now it is catalogued by almost every seedsman here and abroad.

When we introduced this variety, naming it Heart of France, the French Ambassador, afterwards president of that republic, sent us a letter of appre- ciation that this beautiful flower had been named in honor of his country.

Heart of France opens red as the purest ruby, deepens with age, but retains its remarkable beauty to the very end. The petals are strikingly changeable, showing now a glow and sheen quite unique, now a soft, velvety, warm texture. The flowers are large and double to the very center. They are borne on strong plants, branching in type and very robust. Long strong stems with few laterals increase the value of this variety for cutting. The flowers open early and are at their height long before the Peony-Flowered. The illustration gives an idea of the beauty of Heart of France.

Double Nasturtiums Useful and Valuable to Florists

Until very recently, the Nasturtium was solely a garden flower, prized be- cause it is easy to grow, because the col- ors are bright, and the foliage beauti- ful. Today a great many florists are growing the Double Nasturtiums for spring decoration and sale of the flow- ering plants, and to a minor extent, for use of the double flowers for cutting. Nasturtiums are adaptable, easily forced greenhouse flowers. The bril- liance of the huge double blooms against the deep green foliage accounts for the sensational success of the plants for show.
