CEREUS MARGINATUS DC.

“Stem simple or branching at apex,
erect, dark green, 5-7.5 cm in diameter,
ribs 5-7, obtuse, with acute intervals, wool-
ly through the whole length on account of
the con uent areo‘ae; spines 7-9, short (46
mm) and conical, rgid, grayish (younger
ones purplish-black, the central scarcely
distinct from the rest); flower brownish
purple, siender-tubular, 3-5 cm long; fruit
glebular and spiny. Type unknown.
From San Luis Potosi southwest through-
Gut M<«xico. The stem is often covered
with a woody crust, and the woolly con-
fluent ar.olae are often double. It is said
to be freventiy used for hedges in south-
ern Mexico.’’"—Coulter, Cont Na hb 3:399.
CEREUS QUERETARENSIS Weber.

“ Tree—ike, much branched, 6-8 m high;
flowers 10-12 cm long; ovary covered with
triangucar fleshy scales which arise from
a tubcrele and bear axillary wool and
spines; fruit densely covered with bunch-
es cf dark-yecllowish or brownish spines
bulbous at base. Type, Weber specimens
in bb Mo bot gard. In the vicinity of Que-
retaro, Mexico, and cultivated along road-
sides and fence rows.’’—Coulter, Cont Na

“Bracclirg from base, 45 m high and.

stout, dark-green; ribs 10-12, acute, often
oblique, with areolae 2-3 cm apart; radial
spines about 12, irregular, 1-1.5 cm long;
centrals 3, the lower one 5-10 cm long and

defiexed; flowers near the summit, white,

10 cm long; fruit ‘as large as a goose

ege’, dark purplish-red, bearing wool and

spines. Type Weber specimens in hb Mo
-bot gard. Common about Tehuacan, Pue-
bla. Important for its wood, which forms
_ long, straight rods used for poles in hedg-
es and vineyards.’’—Coulter, Cont Na hb

OPUNTIA LARREYI Weber.

“Plant only 9-12 dm high, with large or-
bicular glaucous jo.nts; fruit ‘as large as
a goose egg’, juicy, pulpy, and with pur-
‘ple pulp; seeds small much liks those of
O. ficus indica’. Type unknown. A Mex-
ican species, found by Dr. Weber about
Queretaro, and pronounced by him thie
most delicious of aj the fru.ts he had
tasted. Known as ‘camuessa’.—Coulter,
Cont Na hb 3:423.

“With very short woody stem, and
growing in little clumps 3 dm or less in
diameter; joints slender and not distinctly
tuberculate; flowers simple, beli-shaped,
yellow. Type, Gabb 26 in hb Mo bot gard.
‘Among rocks, especially toward the west
coast and in the more central portions’,
Lower California.’’—Coulter, Cont Na hb

“Joints oval, smooth (not tuberculated),
pale glaucous, 20-25 em long by 15-20 cm
broad; pulvini 2.5-3 em apart, with pale
brownish or gray persistent wool, a few
very silencer straw-colored bristles, and
slender flattened or compressed straw.
colored spines 2.5-3 em long (5-7 on upper
pulvini with some sma.er a d tional

spreading, or the upper cnes (from upper
part of pulvinus) mostly deflexed. Type,
