Today, September 18th,

I have been looking over my plant beds carefully and to tell the truth the sight of them is a better stimulant for ‘‘a tired mind or body’’ ‘‘fora case of the blues’’ or even a ‘‘case of indigestion’’ than any doctor can pre- scribe. Now don’t say that this isn’t true for it is, and any one of mv cus- tomers who can come and see for themselves and don’t agree with me fully and truly I will present them with a hundred plants of my celebrated money maker the NEW HOME Strawberry. In one piece there are 420 rows of plants nearly three hundred yards long and every row from TWO to THREE FEET ACROSS, another patch of 10 acres are nearly as good and other smaller patches are equally as fine. Friends kindly excuse me for being proud of this the finest crop of plants 1 have ever grown. My trade has grown very rapidly and it is especiatly gratifying that I can supply my customers (who are my triends) the coming season with plants from what is probably the finest straw- berry bed in America consisting of NINETY varieties, and then there are my Dewberry plants, no one grows better. I have LUCRETIA, Austin’s or Mayes and the Premo, for three years I have not had enough dewberrvy plants to supply my trade. I may not this year but I can supply over 300,000 before I throw up my hands and holiow ‘‘QUIT’’? and THEY ARE NICE. : |

In addition to growing millions of plants I have for several years been growing many acres of truck crops for the large Hastern Markets such as Cantaloupes, Tomatoes, Cucumbers etc, for instance; for eight years I have grown 50 acres of cantaloupes alone each year. Several times I have failed to get good seed true to name, this has led me to enter the seed business and in doing so I shall use every precaution to supply only the best in vitality and purity, and I hope all those using seeds will appreciate my efforts to sup- ply them with only the best and give me at least a trial order. Many of the sseds I offer are grown on my farmand I know there are none better. Those I do not grow myself are grown for me by expert growers in different parts of the country where the particular species grows to the greatest degree of perfection therefore producing seed with the greatest degree of vitality. We sold this particular lot mostly to retailers and without exception, they pronounced it the best and most satisfactory berry they had ever handled

Since then we have sold to wholesale buyers from outside cities and towns as fer as Portland Me.and have heard nothing but good reports concerning it. Many retail dealers have told us that after keeping them in their stores two and three days.they were just as bright and firm as when they received them. Everything considered,we think it is the best berry we know of for shipping long distances and predict for it.great popularity and success.

Gentlemen: —Replying to your inquiry as to our opinion of the ‘NEW HOME” Berry, shipped you by W. F. Allen, and which we have purchased of you, would say that this berry is, in our judgment, a first-class one for carrying long distances and for re-shipping purposes. It has atrived in Portland after a trip of four hours by express, in good condition, and has stood up well afterwards. Another good

point is the holding of the color as we have found to be the case with this berry. We think well of it.

It must be remembered that the berries above referred to, were picked in Salisbury, and shipped over 500 miles by freight to Boston, being two nights and one day on the road, arriving in Boston the second morning, then sold and re-shipped to Portland, Maine, by express. Ghoice Strawberry Plants.

NEW HOME.—As LATE and LARGE as Gandy. fruit a bright red color that does not lose its lustre and turn dark along time after being picked. Uniformly large size and THE BEST KEEPING AND SHIPPING BERRY GROWN, Hoffman not excepted Vigorous grower, 8nd unlike Gandy, will produce a large crop ov either high or low land. The fruit is so firm and keeping qualities so excellent, it does not need to be picked oftener than thiee times a week, when it will usually make 1000 quarts or more per acre at each picking during the height of the season,. Pickers are always anxious to pick these berries and several have told me that they could

pick 40 quarts or more per hour, and one man declares that he picked 20 quarts in twenty minutes. One of my little boys only 7 years old picked 37 quarts in two hours.

The above was a part of my desrription in last spring’s catalogue. The New Homo has again proven to be the GREATEST MONEY MAKER ON MY FARM. I shipped it the past season by the car load and it always sold for more money than any other variety on the market. It produces big crops. It is easy to pick. Its color is brilliant scarlet and does not fade or turn dark after picking. It keeps longer than any other variety. TWO HILLS OF DEWBERRIES TIED TOA STAKE.

The Dewberry is coustantly growing in favor and is today next tu the Strawberry the most popular of all the small fruits. The vines trail on the ground like a sweet potato vine, in size and quality it is the equal of any blackberry aud.greatly exceeds them in productiveness. The plant is per- fectly hardy and commences ripening its fruit immediately after late straw- berries. Indeed by planting the latest varieties of strawberries snd earliest dewberries there need not be a single day's gap between the two. The dew- berry is sweet and luscious with few seeds ana no hard core This fruit has become very popular in all markets where known and mofe and more are being grown every year and nearly always marketed at puying prices. If let trail‘on the ground they should be well wulched to keep the immense load of. fruit-from being’ spoiled by falling’on the ground. The best way, how- ever. is to stake them as shown jin our illustration. This illustration is a true copy of a photograph made from two hills of one vear old dewberries tied

to a stake three‘and ote-lalf feet hrgt. The photograph was taken after the sixth picking and I could have found hundreds of hills equally as good. Our plan of cultivation is to plant in rows each way two and one-half feet one way by five feet the other making about 3,500 plants per acre, cultivate both ways till plants get long and troublesome and then cultivate only the wide way and tarn vines to keep the cultivator from tearing them off, or better yet use sweeps on your cultivators such as offered in my spring cata- logue, these will run under the vines and weed up the grass without disturb- ing them. Leave vines lay on the ground till all danger of winter killing is over, and then early in spring before buds put out, stakes should be driven between each alternate hill the two and one-half foot way. The stakes should be two and one half or three feet above the ground and one hill from each way tied to the top of the stake (see illustration). Or where timber for stakes is scarce they can be used at longer intcrvals by using wire to lay the vines over, same as grapes. I use binder twine for tying to stakes. When grown as above directed the plotor field in bloom is _ prettier than you can imagine and when fruit comes it is the wonder, admiration and delight of all who see it.

LUCRETIA DEWBERRY.

Lucretia. —The standard dewberry, earlier than the earliest blackberry and as large as the largest of them. The canes are of great hardiness and exceedingly prolific, thriving everywhere; of slender trailing habit, and entirely free from disease and insect attacks. The fruit is superb, large and handsome, jet black, rich and melting. and ships and keeps well. I grow the Lucretia largely for market having had as many as fifty acres in fruit at one time.

AUSTIN’S IMPROVED DEWBERRIES.

Austin’s Improved (Mayes).—An early dewberry of excellent quality and large yield, but the berries lack firmness for long shipment; hence valu- able chiefly for home use and“local markets. Berries large, short and thick; canes vigorous, hardy and productive. Ripens fully a weak earlier, than Lucretia and for this reason is valuable to grow in connection with that*va- riety. 1 have shipped many thousands of quarts of this variety to Philadel- phia, 125 miles, and New York, over 200 miles, and received good prices hav- ing marketed over half the crop before other varieties are in the way. I al- ways plant about one third of my field in this variety. It is very hardy and never fails to give a full crop.

PREMNO DEWBERRY.

Premo. This remarkable new Dewberry is a sport from the grand old Lucretia. The great profitableness of Lucretia with many growers has been because it was the earliest of the blackberry family to ripen. Now we have Premo still earlier aad larger; that means extra money in market and an ear- lier taste of delicious Dewberries for the family. _Premo has imperfect flow- ers and so, in planting, every third or fourth row should be of Lucretia., or better vet, where one is equally fond of both varieties, they can be planted in alternate rows. Remember that Premo is a delicious great blackberry, that begins to ripen when the raspberry seascn is scarcely half over.

Fortop dressing straw- berries, it has no equal. It distributes the ferti- lizer all over the row evenly, and just where you want it, just the quantity you want, as fast as a man can walk. For sowing fertilizer, in the drill, push the spouts all. together and your fertilizer is evenly distributed from the bottom of the fur- row just where you want it, and just the quanti- ty you want without waste and far better than by hand, or with any other machine made. To spread the spouts for top dressing strawberries or broadcasting, and to close them for sowing fertilizer in the drill, requires less than one-half minute. I have sold a great many of these ma- chines the past season and have not had a single complaint. This machine is made in two sizes. No. 14 will top dress or sowin the furrow 2 rows at atime. No. 16 works3 rows ata time and will broadcast a breadth of 8 feet 6inches every trip across the field. No. 14 will broadcast 6 feet ata trip. In building this machine, every tried and approved feature of our well known hand fertilizer distributor has been carefully preserved. We refer especially to our unequalled belt feed, strengthened to meet the de- mands of horse machine. This feed is without doubt superior inall respects, and is so pronounced by farmers everywhere. Weurgently advise spreading fertilizers well for fur- row work, especially when using heavy. These distributers put this matter readily and thoroughly under the control of the operator. These machines are worked with one horse, (No. 14.) and will distribute fertilizer in three furrows at once, if 3% feet or less apart. Over that width, and up to 5 feet. it will distribute in 2 furrows. It will side dress2 rows of any growing crop on each side of both rows.
