CALIFORNIA SEEDS.

To PATRoNns:—It is now fully demonstrated that California grown seeds are unsurpassed by any in the world. The long dry season and equable climate are perfectly adapted to growing and ripening seeds. Their germinating qualities are unsurpassed. Those who have not tested them will find it to their advantage to do so. Contract orders taken to grow. seeds in quantity. The patronage of all who receive this list is so- licited. Very truly yours,

THEODOSIA B. SHEPHERD.

Cacti and Succulent Plants.

I have a very extensive collection “ofCacti and Succulent Plants, especially of the large blooming showy Cacti, such as Cereus, Phyllos, Epiphyllums, and Echinopsis.

To those wishing to offer Cacti, I will give rates on collections or in quantity. My plants will bloom. The secret of having blooming Cacti is to take cuttings from wood that has bloomed. Such cuttings will give blossoms the first season.

Echinopsis Mullerii and “Case Knife Cactus” are “plants for the million.” They are beautiful and grow for any one.

Cacti are grown readily from seed and are extremely interesting in all stages. The seeds should be planted in sand in shallow, well drained boxes. They should be kept moist and covered with glass They can be left in the boxes until well established; should not be over watered nor allowed to become dry after they are once started.

A Rare Collection of Plants.—I have a large collection of plants not named within. Send for retail catalogue. One-third discount given the trade from retail prices.

Unrooted Cuttings.

Being so far from trade centers, it is unprofitable to keep a large stock of plants on hand for the wholesale trade I have a great variety of fine, large plants growing outside and am prepared to grow to order all varieties on list, also in my retail catalogue which I will send on applica- tion. Fine roots of smilax at all seasons. Contracts taken to grow plants in large quantities.

Pelargoniums, foliage Geraniums, Begonias, and decorative plants a specialty. Strong unrooted cuttings at the following _ prices: Bignonia Venustra, B. Speciossa, Bougainvillia Glabra, B. ABUTILONS. New Fancy California “Bellflowers.” Flower lovers will be delighted with the great variety of charming flowers produced by this new strain of ‘The Chinese Bellflower.” The flowers are of all sizes and forms. There are beautiful drooping bells, gay little parachutes, dainty swinging flowers on thread-like stems, large, flaring blossoms, flowers crinkled like crape, others shining like satin, and some so full as to be almost double. They are all colors,—pure white, lemon-yellow, rose, scarlet, crimson, as well as yellow and red shades beautifully veined. The fohage is of all sizes, shapes, and textures. On some plants the leaves are so small and the blossoms so brilliant that there seem to be more flowers than leaves. Extra selected 50 cts. per pkt, $4 per oz.; grand mixed, $3 per oz.; choice mixed, $2 per oz.

Mrs. Shepherd’s Grand New Early Blooming Fancy Cosmos.

The following is an extract from an interview with W. Atlee Burpee, the well-known Philadelphia seedsman, taken from the Los Angeles Evening Express of May 19th:

“I have just been visiting in Ventura the garden of Mrs. Theodosia

B. Shepherd of that point.

“Mrs. Shepherd has the finest Cosmos in the world. It has never been equalled. She has developed it herself from a small flower, two inches across, to monster blossoms from four to five inches in diameter. I counted thirty-five varieties in her garden yesterday. Mrs. Shepherd is

quick to see possibilities and is developing some wonderful things in her >) garden.

These giant flowers are surpassingly beautiful, measuring 44 to 5 inches across. Some are shaped like single Camellias, but larger and more beautiful; some of the crimson ones could almost be taken for single Dahlias; white ones have plaited petals prettily fringed, resembling the Romneya Coulterii, or California Tree Poppy. The petals are piain in some flowers; in others pinked, toothed or fringed, and beautifully overlapping. Colors range from pure white through shades of pink and red. Tne latter are dark rich shades of red, shades heretofore unknown in Cosmos. Some white ones are delicately flushed or flecked with pink or mauve, and very beautiful flowers in pink and mauve have a dark red ring «round the eye. The daintiest, white, pink and flushed, have lacinated petals, fringed to the center of the flower, and resemble Marguerites, but are more beautiful and esthetic. The giant white are especially handsome, with very large, broad petals; flowers of great substance, almost as chaste and lovely as lilies. 25c. per pkt., 65c¢. per OZ., $6 per tb.

COSMOS, Giant Red, Pink and White. Separate. Flowers of perfect form, great size and_beauty; measuring 43 to 5 inches across. 30dc. per pkt., 7de. per oz., $8 per tb.

“TINTS OF DAWN.’”’ New and distinct. White ground, finely flecked or flushed with delicate pink; some are flushed much darker around the eye than others; they are variously formed and are very beautiful. 35c. per pkt., $1 per oz., $10 per bb.

‘NEW MARGUERITE”’ COSMOS. Mixed. One of the prettiest and daintiest varieties imaginable; flowers measure from to 3 inches across; the petals are deeply and irregularly lacinated or fringed and resemble Marguerites, but are much more esthetic and beautiful. 35ce. per pkt., $1 per oz., $12 per ib.

“SINGLE DAHLIA FLOWERED”’ Crimson. Splendid flowers of the deepest, richest shades of crimson, very large, resembling Single Dahlias in shape; with age they take on a lighter shade, which adds greatly to the effect, giving several different shades on one plant; the contrast between the brilliant red flowers and the rich green of the foliage is very beautiful. 75c. per oz., HY per tb.

COSMOS, New Orange Colored. A variety said to have come from Mexico, but which I received from the south. The foliage is much more coarsely serrated than the ordinary Cosmos; the plants grow 4 to 5 feet high and are covered with myriads of br illiant orange yellow flowers, 2 inches across. It seeda very sparingly. : : eds =f ..5 rery-srrted. eZ 2S, (jp 4 i=

Goonies New. Improved Yellow.

This pretty and useful Cosmos is greatly improved after two seasons in California; the flowers are twice as large (about 23 inches in diameter), with broader petals and the plants more upright in growth. It begins blooming when very young, and blooms profusely and continuously,

giying a mass of bright color that is very attractive. 25c. per pkt, $2.5 per oz.

Calliopsis Lan. Grandfl. Improved.

“CALIFORNIA SUNBEAMS.”’ These lovely improved varieties are much larger than any heretofore offered, and have the great recommonda- tion of being early blooming; the flowers are beautifully formed with very long stems; some saucer-shaped, others flat, some Cosmos flowered, some exquisitely incurved while others are like great buttercups. The petals are broad, with pinked, toothed or irregularly fringed edges. Some are very hght yellow, others a deeper shade, darker around the eye—all so fine, it is difficult to say which is most beautiful. They are 3 to 4 inches in diameter. 50c. per pkt., 75c. per oz., '®per bb.

CENTAUREA NEW MARGUERITE, pure white, 25c pkt., $1.50 oz.

New Large Flowering Fancy Dianthus ‘Oriental Beauties’”’ (From South Japan.)

A magnificent strain of new large flowering Dianthus, which I have thoroughly tested, and can recommend as a novelty of sterling merit. These splendid flowers measure from 3 to 4 inches across with petals measuring 13 inches diameter. They are most exquisitely formed, the petals being full, overlapping, crinkled and lacinated. The flowers possess that peculiar and artistic charm so noticeable in all plants from the Flowery Kingdom. They range in color from pure white through shades of pink and crimson, the coloring and markings is rich beyond description, nothing could be more dainty and pretty than their charm- ing ruffles and frills. Every one is delighted with them. They are per- fectly hardy, are perpetual bloomers, needing only to be cut back every few weeks to bring on a new crop of flowers. 50c. per pkt., $150-per4 ozs., $5:50 per tb. Write for price on larger quantity.

Mts. Shepherd’s New Eschscholtzias, “The Golden West.’’

Grand New Eschscholtzias, developed from E Maritima, a pretty variety, having light canary yellow flowers with an orange blotch at the base of each petal, forming a Maltese cross in the center. Thc original flowers measured two inches across. The flowers of these new giants measure from 33 to 6 inches in diameter; they have very large overlapping petals, often delicately waved at the edges. They are beautifully and variously formed; some are flat and wide open, some saucer-shaped, others very deep with flaring edges. In some the orange blotch almost suffuses the whole flower, in others it runs into the yellow in fine penciled lines, others again have an orange center with a margin of clear yellow, while the Maltese cross in some of the flowers is very distinct. Gorgeous be- yond description. 50c. per pkt., $4 per oz , $30 per tb.

These all stand the hot sun and are sure to bring many beautiful new and hardy varieties. A finer collection has never been offered. 50c¢ per 100 seeds, $4 per 1000; 10,000 or more $3 per 1000 seeds ,

New Black Foliage Heliotrope.

/

Two new Heliotropes: “Egypt” and “Midnight,” a dusky pair, most appropriately named; the stems are black as ink, the foliage a beautiful bronzy green, so dark as to be almost black. ‘Midnight’ has a fine tree- like habit that is very distinet, while “Egypt” is round and bushy with lustrous foliage, resembling thick crepe; the flowers of both are beautiful shades of bluish purple, variegated with white and hghter purple; both are extremely handsome, and the seeds can be depended upon to bring fine dark leaved varieties. NOVELPIES AND SPECIES.

Mrs. Shepherd's Grand New [Begonias

BRILLIANT LEAVES AND MAGNIFICENT FLOWERS.

Words are inadequate to describe the beauty of these new Begonias as they now appear in my lathhouses and greenhouses. The following are from Gloria de Juoy by Rubra: They are of the Otto Hecker and Gaulin type but greatly superior in every way. All have large oblong Jeaves and immense panicles of very large flowers in shades of pink, and red; in habit they are tree-like, strong and robust, sending up a great number of canes to the height of six or eight feet. The foliage is a yellowish or bronze green, exquisitely beautiful in texture, and has a shining silken lustre. The difference between the various plants consists in size and shape of leaves, and the erilliant colors with which they are, at various times, tinged or illuminated; they change in the different stages of growth. Though giants in size there is not the shghtest sug- gestion of coarseness about them. On old, well established plants there are frequently 50 to 80 flowers in one cluster

BEGONIA ‘‘Enchantress.’’ This charming variety has very large, shining, dark green leaves with dark red edge, very delicately waved, underneath they are rich shining wine color; the young foliage is a copper green shaded with terra cotta; the folage when old is also brilliant; it has immense clusters of very large flowers of a beautiful, rich rose color, shaded red. 23-inch pots 20c. each, $2 per doz.

‘“‘Fair Rosamond.’’ <A splendid, stately Begonia, that sends up strong canes to the height of 6 or 8 feet. The leaves are a lustrous, changeable bronze green above, and a rich wine color underneath. They measure 15 inches in length by 74 in width and are oblong in shape, running to one long point, with three smaller points on the upper side. The young foliage is a bright red, sometimes spotted with silver. The magnificent panicles of exquisite waxen flowers hang from long stems and are of a deep rose-red color, shaded lighter rose. The pistillate flowers measure 23 inches in length 24-inch pots, 20c. each; $2 per doz.

‘“‘Ernani.’’ <A tall, stately plant, of magnificent habit, with splendid foliage. An old, well established plant; will throw up canes to the height of 8 feet, and forms an imposing sight, with its splendid leaves and grand panicles of elegant flowers hanging from long stems. The foliage is beautiful at all times, the young growth being very bright, in striking contrast with the older growth. 24-inch pots, 20c. each; $2 per doz.

‘‘Heart’s Delight.’’ This lovely Begonia will delight the heart of

lirs. Theodosia B. Shepherd’s Wholesale Trade List. 15

any lover of these flowers. It does not grow as tall as the others, but has satiny, changeable green leaves, with three points; edges delicately fluted and edged with dark red, underneath changeable reddish green veined red. The flowers area pure coral red, the pistillate flowers two inches long, and two idches from tip to tip across the petals. 15c. each, $1.50 per doz.

‘‘Atala.’? Large leaves with three rather blunt points, dotted with large and small silver spots; mulberry red underneath; young foliage a dark, bronzy red. Flowers bright pink. A splendid grower. 20c. each, $2 per doz.

Incarnata ‘‘California.’’ A seedling from ‘Incarnata,’ much stronger habit, with leaves twice as large, and prettily waved; flowers a deeper shade and much larger, and in larger panicles; a vigorous grower and always in bloom. 10c. each, $1 per doz.

Lovely New Climbing Begonia ‘‘Marjorie Daw.’’ (Rubra by Glauci- phylla Scandens) <A beautiful new seedling Begonia with Rubra’s strong growth united to the climbing habit of Glauciphylla Scandens. It is a rapid, vigorous grower that bears magnificent large clusters of salmon pink flowers, with a shining, satin-like gloss. The ovaries of the pistillate flowers have an oval white spot in center; the leaves are thick and broadly lobed on the upper side and run to a sharp point at the end. It branches freely and will grow ten or fifteen feet high if permitted. Is a fine :bloomer and its great beauty will make it very popular. Plants from 24-inch pots. $2 per doz. Ready after Sept. Ist.

Four Grand New Chrysanthemums Offered By No One Else.

It makes a splendid foliage plant; fine for bedding and ex- quisite under glass. The flowers are very large and double to the centre; color a creamy white. The foliage always comes true. It makes a splendid exhibition plant. 40c. each, $3 per doz.

‘‘Madonna.’’ A snow white Anemone flowered variety of most beautiful form; the central florets are daintily toothed, giving a very pretty effect; the ray petals are broad and flat. A perfect beauty. Medium early. 20c. each, $1.50 per doz

stems, and is double to the very center; the petals are broad and long, drooping gracefully from the center, curling at the ends; it has a fine habit, handsome foliage, and is early blooming, continuing for a long time; under glass it is always snowy white, out of doors the petals are prettily lined with pink. Invaluable for cut flowers. $1.50 per doz., $10 per 100.

Grand New Perpetual Blooming Carnation ‘‘Anna H, Shaw.”

Without exception this is the best cut-flower white Carnation that has ever been offered. It has every qualification for cut-flowers and if it does as well in the east as in California, will be a perfect boon to the cut-flower trade, and for the amateur it is equally desirable as it is very easily grown and gives an immense number of flowers as a bedding plant. It grows readily from cuttings and forms strong bushy plants without pinching, and in a very short time is ready for bloom. The foliage is strong and of a rich color, crisp and fresh; the flowers are above medium size without disbudding, and in the garden one stem will frequently give four or more perfect flowers; they are very double, of perfect form, petals delicately toothed. The flowers never burst, and exquisitely fragrant. One of the greatest recommendations of this Carnation is the reserve foliage always on hand for fresh flowers, so many varieties seem to put forth all their efforts and then come to a standstill. Everyone should try it. Rooted cuttings 75c. per doz., $5) per 100; strong plants $1.25 per doz., $8 per 100.

‘‘White Pearl.’’ A pure pearly white, very large, with perfectly round flowers, very large trusses borne on long stems; a valuable addition to the list of white geraniums.
