FINDING-LIST OF PLANTS
AT BREEZE HILL GARDENS

THE list which follows was compiled particularly to give aid in the
consideration of the flowers and plants grown at Breeze Hill for study,
and for the purpose of supplementing the photographic collection of
the J. Horace McFarland Company. As the collection is being constantly
improved and changed it is accurate only as of June 12, 1935.

The Breeze Hill property, which includes 2.4 acres, is nearly a quarter
segment of a circle, as shown by the diagram, on pages 38-39. There
is a variation in elevation of approximately 15 feet on the property, from
which the ground falls away gently to the north and much more sharply to
the south and east. The average height is 485 feet above sea-level, or about
190 feet above the Susquehanna River at Market Street.

The old mansion house in which Mr. McFarland lives was built in 1875
as the summer home of Jacob F. Haehnlen, a Philadelphia lithographer, who
was devoted to grape-growing. Much of the original farm was in vineyard,
and ten bearing Concord vines known to have been planted in 1858 still
exist in the little vineyard shown on the plan.

Mr. McFarland came into possession of the property in the winter of 1908
(his occupancy beginning June 1, 1909), finding many dead pear trees and
decrepit grapevines. Two hedges of American arborvitse, which separate
the garden sections, had been roughly treated. The trees were seven horse-
chestnuts and a great American sycamore; hemlocks, pines, Norway spruces,
and Norway maples. Of fruit trees, there remained two persimmons, two
Buffum pears, and many sour cherry trees. There were a few old lilacs and
some old-fashioned roses.

Mr. McFarland’s aim, in addition to establishing a pleasant place in which
to live, has been to create pictures from and to the home, and of later years
to establish a representative collection of plants worth attention. He has
been particularly favored by the Arnold Arboretum, and by many friends
in the United States, in Europe and in Australia, who have provided rare
plants. The Federal Bureau of Plant Industry has been drawn upon through
its Special Plant Introduction section. In the last fifteen years much attention
has been paid to the rose collection, with special emphasis on the hardy
climbers. Within five years, rock and alpine plants have had much consider¬
ation, and a large collection is to be found in the sections devoted to them.

BREEZE HILL Gardens are open to the public, within certain reasonable re¬
strictions as to hours and convenience; a sign at the entrance will indicate when
the gardens are closed. Visitors from a distance can always arrange for ad¬
mission, even though the gardens are closed, by applying to an attendant or by tele¬
phone. It is preferred that approach should usually be made through the 21st Street gar¬
den gate, or from Hillside Road, avoiding the driveway and the home entrance on Bellevue

Road. The Hillside Road gate is convenient for exit. Cars may be parked on 21st
Street, on Hillside Road, and on Bellevue Road, but not in the residence driveway.

Dogs should not be brought into the gardens at any time. If small children
accompany parents or other adults, they must be kept in hand. While Mr. McFarland
is glad to have the gardens accessible to those who enjoy flowers and plants, it must
be understood that the property is not a public park, in which seats and other con¬
veniences are for general use. Breeze Hill is private property, and access to it is a
courtesy which may be withdrawn at any time.

Approach to Breeze Hill from the center of the city is by Market Street, east to
21st Street, thence on 21st Street south to Bellevue and Hillside Roads, between
which the property lies. Reservoir Park buses (Route 2) run to 21st and Market Streets,
and Breeze Hill is two blocks south to the right. The diagram printed below con¬
veniently locates Breeze Hill with reference to the city of Harrisburg and to the Mt.
Pleasant Press. It also connects with main highways.

Copies of this Finding-List are freely at the disposal of sincere visitors. Such
as so desire may register in the Rose Arbor of the Center Garden.

FINDING-LIST OF PLANTS
AT BREEZE HILL GARDENS

EIGHTH EDITION — JUNE 12, 1935

The letters and numbers at the ends of the lines indicate the beds or
borders in which the plants may be found. The beds or borders are mostly
located by concrete markers in one or two corners of each.

Plants are labeled with embossed copper labels, or with black-and-white
labels. On shrubs these hang nearest the walk, or may be found hanging on
metal rods in the soil before the plant. There are also some zinc labels at
ground-level, or twisted around a main limb. The roses are labeled in groups,
and in the Main (or West) Rose-Garden, each bed of one variety has a label
giving its source, where it was grown, and the understock used. The climbers
have permanent labels in the posts. All the permanent labels are of Mt.
Pleasant Press manufacture.

The nomenclature is generally that of “Standardized Plant Names,” a
copy of which will be found in the Tool-house. It may be useful in seeking
common names. The names of roses are according to “Modern Roses” and
for recent varieties follow the publications of the American Rose Society.

The characters in parentheses following the names indicate sources and
dates. A list of the source abbreviations is printed on the second and third
cover pages.

CENTER GARDEN

This garden is formal in outline, four of the beds being bordered
with Dwarf Box. The older Rose hedges, and most of the Peonies are
in it. The two long borders in the shelter of the Arborvitse hedge (C-65,
C-72) are used for rare plants needing protection from high winds.
On the north side of these borders many wild flowers and native Aza¬
leas are located (C-80, C-74). The Iris Garden and Water Lily Pool

EVERGREENS

Several old Norway Spruces, White Pines, and Hemlocks, together
with the now retrograding hedges of American Arborvitse, were on the
place in 1909. (See Picea, Pinus, Tsuga, Thuja.) Many have been
added and are growing into characteristic beauty. An interesting

froup is near the front entrance at E-100. The specimens of Japanese
rew in W-29 and W-3 are good, and other coniferous evergreens are in
various locations. (See Abies, Taxus, Pseudotsuga.)

Broad-leaved Evergreens are becoming a feature. There are
several of the American Holly and other Hollies, some evergreen
Cotoneasters, Barberries, and a Magnolia. The Pachysandra plant¬
ings are considerable and effective. (See Cotoneaster, Berberis, Galax,

FRONT GARDEN. From corner Bellevue Road and 21st Street to
front entrance ; all west of residence to and including drive entrance
on 2 1 st Street.

The Front Garden includes five of the six Horse-chestnuts planted
in 1876 or earlier, all of which were split and badly decayed in their
trunks when the present occupancy began in 1909. They have been
carefully repaired by the Davey organization and are good examples
of skillful “tree surgery.” The Lovers’ Lane entrance from 21st Street
gives access to the fine specimen of Dwarf Horse-chestnut ( AZsculus
parviflora ) and to the woods plants and Aconites on the left in F-159,
where also are naturalized some California Erythroniums.

GRAPES

There are ten Grape-vines known to have been planted in 1859
or earlier — all Concord save one. Grape-growing seems to have begun
in this location when it was named “Bellevue” in 1819 by Ludwig
Lambert Gall, according to the “Annals of Harrisburg.” Christopher
Haehnlen grew grapes in 1836, and his son, Jacob F. Haehnlen, grew
grapes here extensively from 1859.

GROUND-COVER PLANTS

Much attention is given at Breeze Hill to the growing of plants
that will agreeably substitute for the lawn grasses in places unfavor¬
able to the latter. The Pachysandra cover near F-157, under a large
Horse-chestnut, and under other trees, and in shaded locations may be
mentioned. At the driveway entrance to the residence Vinca minor is
prospering. Several forms of Violet, including the old “Johnny-jump-
up” are availed of. In many places Anchusa myosotidiflora is being
established. There are trials of Hydrangea petiolaris and Xanthorhiza
apiifolia, and Convallaria majalis and Hedera helix are also used to
satisfaction. A pleasing blue-flowered Veronica is being introduced,
and also an old Fragaria carpets some spots. Where taller plants
are admissible, Chrysanthemum koreanum and Amsonia tabernae-
montana do very well, both in shade and in sun.

embraces species and sorts covering a bloom period of about six
weeks. Attention is called to the sorts providing notable and peculiar
fragrances.  P.  subcanus,  an  early  species,  gives  an  odor  of  hyacinths;

P. sericanthus rehderianus has the fragrance of Valeriana officinalis,
and P. purpurascens that of sweet peas. The Lemoine hybrid, Belle

PLATANUS occidentalis . East Lawn

This great Sycamore is the dominating tree of the neighborhood.

It is known to have been an important object in 1819. Much effort
has been expended to prevent damage to the living tree by a destruc¬
tive anthracnose which causes defoliation. For several years it has
been sprayed with bordeaux mixture at a pressure of 600 pounds and
carefully fed underground through a series of holes punched in the

lawn.

ROCK-GARDENS

Rock-Plants at Breeze Hill are at W-32, W-33, E-121, E-125. The
first rock planting was done in the spring of 1927, in “Lovers’ Lane,”
F-158. In most locations, moving water is a feature, and provides a
certain measure of bog conditions. Maple Brook in the west end of
C-58 is arranged to keep the contiguous soil moist for plants which
require boggy conditions. A similar provision is made at E-125. The
plants in the various rock-gardens are being constantly changed and
adapted. In the newer sections, W-32 and W-33, one little moraine
is planned for acid-loving plants. Underground irrigation is provided
for these sections.

ROCK-PLANTS

For convenience in reference, the various species planted in the
different rock-gardens (mostly in W-32-33) are here separately listed.
Many of these items are found also in other parts of the Gardens.

TESTING-GARDENS . South of Vineyard

In these Testing-Gardens are grown each year various Annuals,
usually of the less conventional sorts, in order to test their general de¬
sirability. The All-America Seed Trials are an annual feature. Each
planting is labeled with name and source. Also there are beds used
for the newer roses, including some seedlings.

THUJA occidentalis . Old inner hedges

These Arborvitaes, forming originally a lane of approach (now
Lovers’ Lane), and dividing the house grounds from the greenhouse
that stood where the Center Garden now is, were probably planted
about 1876, and were beheaded about twenty-five years later, giving
them a shock from which they have never recovered.

WALL PLANTING

The walls in the Center Garden were built in April, 1928, when
grading was made necessary for the Lily-pool. The stones used were
carefully selected and placed by G. A. Stevens, planting following
closely. The steps were “home-made” upon design by Mr. Stevens.

THE ROSES AT BREEZE HILL

ROSA

The endeavor at Breeze Hill is to grow for test, photograph, and
to make color records of all obtainable roses that seem to be of value
and importance. This endeavor is aided by many of the more im¬
portant growers and hybridizers, who recognize the scope, impartial¬
ity, and value of these tests, consequently sending us their productions,
often before they are deemed to be worthy of names or patents.

Because of the close relation of the executives of the American
Rose Society to Breeze Hill, it may be assumed that the Breeze Hill
rose-test is of the same nature as that conducted by the National
Rose Society of England, at Haywards Heath, although no awards
are here made or recorded.

The rose genus at Breeze Hill is represented by the following species,
mostly in two locations — one at the eastern edge of the Rose-Garden
(W-4), and the other at the eastern edge of the Orchard (E-112).

HARDY CLIMBING ROSES

Because of the almost inextricable confusion between the Wichu-
raiana and the Multiflora climbers, they have been divided into two
classes — Ramblers (R.) and Large-flowering Climbers (LC.). The
Climbing Hybrid Tea and the Climbing Hybrid Perpetual roses are
separately listed. The Australian Climbers are mentioned under
Australian roses.

HYBRID TEA ROSES

In the formal beds of the West Garden and in the trial-bed
section of the Center Garden. In the West Garden the central feature
is the planting in the 1935 Spring in ground very carefully prepared
in the 1934 Fall, of eight display beds, mostly of 20 and 30 of a' kind.
These beds are labeled not only as to variety but as to origin, under¬
stock, and time of planting. Many Hybrid Teas received for testing,
not infrequently yet unnamed, are in the trial-beds in the Center

SETIGERA HYBRIDS

All these Setigera hybrids were made by M. H. Horvath, of
Mentor, Ohio, in an attempt to provide climbing roses of value that
could endure at least 20 degrees below zero. They carried through
the severe winter of 1933-34 with little or no damage. Later hybrids
have recently been added, and there are also in the trial-beds certain
Hybrid Tea varieties into which Mr. Horvath has bred the Setigera
strain.
