Home Study In Arboriculture
Another source of training aids for Urban Foresters is the National Arbo¬
rist Association's Home Study Program in Arboriculture. This program is a
two phase program and is designed to provide technical and professional
information to those engaged in shade and ornamental tree management and

Cities Must Choose 14 minutes
This film provides an introduction to the basic
concepts of urban forestry, with emphasis on the
physical and psychological benefits of trees and
other vegetation in the city. The film also pre¬
sents the type of work the urban forester is
typically involved in, and the "tools" (i.e., street
tree inventories, canopy analysis, etc.) an Urban

Dutch Elm Disease ^ Catalyst To Community For“
estry 23 minutes
The purpose of this film is to document how the
Dutch elm disease epidemic experience has clearly
demonstrated the need for longterm community
forestry programs.
The film explains the biology and history of the
DED epidemic, and examines the primary control
techniques in the Western Plains States. Then,
using the DED problem as an example, the film
explores the role of community forestry programs
as a means of avoiding future problems, and
providing long-term urban forest management.

The Singing Tree 15 minutes
A film about trees — for children. One hundred
school children participate in the film,, along with
singer Billy B. Songs teach scientific concepts
about the growth and function of trees — concepts
such as photosynthesis, the absorption of soil

Tree Care Safety
This is a 4 -part, 80 slides each, program illustra¬
ting all of the safety requirements set forth in the
American National Standards Institute's (ANSI)
"Safety Requirements for Pruning, Trimming,
Repairing, Maintaining and Removing Trees,, and for
Cutting Brush." Covers - personal safety, equip¬
ment safety, operational safety, general safety.
This standard is the basis for the tree care in¬
dustry's OSHA requirements. The program is only

Container plantings can be practical when space is
limited. Containers and trees must be harmonized
with the surroundings. The program covers freeze
injury, submerged planters, and drainage. It also
suggests that species be carefully selected, and
gives examples.

Trees For Urban Roadways
Proper species selection is vital when planting
trees near urban roadways. Cold weather, snow,
wind, deicing salt, length of growing season, and
motor vehicle exhaust fumes are all factors that
must be considered. Shows the effect of urban
conditions at specific sites on the survival of the
tree and suggests species for certain areas.
Planning the planting to accommodate the growth
of the tree is vital.
