Another  source  of  training  aids  for  Urban  Foresters  is  the  National  Arbo¬ 
rist  Association's  Home  Study  Program  in  Arboriculture.  This  program  is  a 
two  phase  program  and  is  designed  to  provide  technical  and  professional 
information  to  those  engaged  in  shade  and  ornamental  tree  management  and

This  film  provides  an  introduction  to  the  basic 
concepts  of  urban  forestry,  with  emphasis  on  the 
physical  and  psychological  benefits  of  trees  and 
other  vegetation  in  the  city.  The  film  also  pre¬ 
sents  the  type  of  work  the  urban  forester  is 
typically  involved  in,  and  the  "tools"  (i.e.,  street 
tree  inventories,  canopy  analysis,  etc.)  an  Urban

Dutch  Elm  Disease  ^  Catalyst  To  Community  For“ 
estry  23  minutes 

The  purpose  of  this  film  is  to  document  how  the 
Dutch  elm  disease  epidemic  experience  has  clearly 
demonstrated  the  need  for  longterm  community 
forestry  programs. 

The  film  explains  the  biology  and  history  of  the 
DED  epidemic,  and  examines  the  primary  control 
techniques  in  the  Western  Plains  States.  Then, 
using  the  DED  problem  as  an  example,  the  film 
explores  the  role  of  community  forestry  programs 
as  a  means  of  avoiding  future  problems,  and 
providing  long-term  urban  forest  management.

The  Singing  Tree  15  minutes 

A  film  about  trees  — for  children.  One  hundred 
school  children  participate  in  the  film,,  along  with 
singer  Billy  B.  Songs  teach  scientific  concepts 
about  the  growth  and  function  of  trees — concepts 
such  as  photosynthesis,  the  absorption  of  soil 
nutrients  and  water  by  roots,  and  the  protective 
role  of  bark.  Originally  produced  for  instruc¬

This  slide  tape  describes  an  expanded  understand¬ 
ing  of  the  decay  process  in  trees.  Trees  are

Pest  Management  For  Urban  Trees
