Wholesale Price List
of the
Alabama Nursery Company
(Incorporated )
Huntsville, Alabama
We grow Nursery Stock to sell at WHOLESALE. We
do not intend to send our lists to planters or to parties not
entitled to them. We hear complaints of Nurserymen send-
ing trade lists to parties not entitled to them. If our lists
go to such parties it is an error which we will THANK YoU
TO CORRECT by advising us of parties name and address.
All Telegrams are Transmitted by Telephone
FOR YOUR INFORMATION
We would suggest that parties with whom we have never
had dealings, send us their orders in time for us to commu-
nicate with their references before they want stock ship-
ped. We cannot accept orders from such parties without
cash in advance, satisfactory security or references, and we
mention this to avoid delay on rush orders during the pack-
ing season.
Each order is handled separately. After lifting, the trees
are sent immediately to our large cellar where they are
GRADED AND BUNCHED UNDER COVER, exposure is
reduced to a minimum and customers may depend upon re-
ceiving stock fresh, sound and in perfect condition.
Telegraphic orders usually filled same day they are re-
ceived. Use Nurseryman’s Telegraphic Code.
It is not our ambition to be a low-priced house, but we
strive to grow stock that is FIRST-CLASS, TO GRADE
ACCURATELY, to have the handling and packing as good
AS THE BEST. We expect to sell on the market. We
believe this is the way to hold trade.
Ten, hundred and thousand rates. We make three rates to
apply as follows: On orders for 50 trees and over (up to
300) WHEN NOT LESS THAN TEN TREES OF A
VARIETY, the hundred rate will be charged. On orders
for 300 trees and over WHEN NOT LESS THAN TEN
TREES OF A VARIETY, the Thousand rate will be
charged. On all orders of less than 50 trees the Ten rate
will be charged.
Guarantee of Genuineness
We exercise the greatest care to keep our varieties PURE
and TRUE to name, and we hold ourselves in readiness at
all times to replace, on proper proof, all stock that may prove
otherwise, or refund the amount paid; but it is mutually
agreed between the purchaser and ourselves that we shall
not at any time be liable for any amount greater than the
original price of the goods.
Packing and Packing Cases
Our packing season begins October Ist, and continues
through the winter until March Ist.
The cost of cases seven and one-half to nine feet long,
thirty inches, is $2.50; twenty-four inches, $2.00; eighteen
inches, $1.50. Bales, 25 cents to 75 cents. No charge for
drayage.
Bales cost a higher rate of freight; so, as far as possible,
we ship in cases.
Shipping
Please state how goods must be sent; whether by freight
or express; also route. If no directions are given, we will
ship as we think best serves customer’s interests without
assuming responsibility. The risk and cost of transportation
belong to purchaser.
Grades
We grade carefully; in some cases by caliper, others by
height. When by both, the caliper must govern. The
lower number is included, and the higher number excluded.
For instance, in a grade from four to five feet, four feet trees
are included, but five feet go into the next grade. If plump
five feet trees are wanted, the order must be for five to six
feet. When possible, we prefer to send samples to prospec-
tive customers.
Caution
We accept all orders upon the condition that they shall be
void should any injury befall the stock, from frost, hail,
storm, fire or other causes over which we have no control.
Claims
All claims must be made immediately on receipt of goods,
or they will not be allowed.
Prices
The quotations in this list are for the WHOLESALE TRADE
ONLY, and are subject to change without notice.
+ ALABAMA NURSERY COMPANY’S
kes” TIM E—If possible, give us a few days notice before
you want stock shipped. We will ship your goods on the
day specified if possible.
CIPHER—For convenience in Telegraphing, a Cipher
word in Jtalic type is given for each grade.

When you buy twine on reels you pay for the weight of
the reel. When the twine in put up in coils you get net
weight. Youcan run an old broom or hoe handle through
the coil, nail on a cross piece, cut the lashing, put the 4o
cents in your pocket and go ahead.

SAN JOSE SCALE AND FUMIGATION
Our Nurseries are free from San Jose Scale, and it has not
been found in this locality. We are prepared to fumigate
with Hydrocyanic Acid Gas and cheerfully do so upon
request.
Common sense box closer or clamp, to close your boxes so
that the cover can be nailed on.
A piece of hard wood(1% inches thick by 24 inches wide,
and 5 inches long) for handle, a strong trace chain, have the
blacksmith hammer out two pieces of steel and you have got
a box clamp (adjustable to all sizes of boxes) such as the
great nurserymen of Rochester have used for years.
A good thing. No patent. Make it yourself. Our supply
catalogue will show you how. We would tell you here but
the picture is not ready. If you are interested ask for our
New Supply Catalogue.

Not long ago we were offered wool twine at one cent per
noua less than we expected to pay, we asked for a sample
ball and measured it; one pound measured 156 feet.
One
pound of the kind we have been using measured 301 feet.
We stuck to the old. Figure it out.

Helps keep out frost and heat, protects contents of box
from drying winds. It is water proof, by this, we mean that
it will resist a good deal of moisture, but there is a limit.
This paper is put up in rolls 4o inches wide, about Io0o0

roll will line twenty-seven full size cases. We call it a good
paper. Youcan buy paper for less money, but we think
you will find this cheaper in the end.

FUMIGATION AND CHEMICALS.
The laws of many states require the fumigation of nursery stock
with Hydrocyanic acid gas. The necessary equipment consists of an
air tight chamber (box or house) a glazed earthenware vessel. a glass
measure graduated to ounces (a plain tumbler, mark the sides with a
file) and a set of accurate scales, the necessary chemicals are Cyanide
of Potash (98 per cent.) and Sulphuric Acid (specific gravity 1.83.) Care
should be taken to secure the 98 per cent. Cyanide otherwise an insuffi-
cient amount of gas would be generated and the fumigation prove
ineffective. (‘‘Commercial’’ Cyanide contains an average of 26.45 per
cent. Cyanide of Potash.) Cyanide of Potash must be kept in an air
tight package and so packed will keep indefinitely, it isa deadly poison
and should not be left where it will fall into the hands of children or
careless persons and should never be handled by a person having open
sores, cuts or bruisesupon his hands. The gasis colorless and if inhaled
in quantity is fatal, smaller amounts induce headache or dizziness
The best commercial grade of Sulphuric Acid should be procured.
This acid should be kept in a glass or earthenware vessel tightly
stopped with a glass or lead stopper.
The chief requisite for a fumigation house is that it should be air
tight or gas proof.
The standard formula for fumigating each 100 cubic feet of space
contained in the fumigating house is as follows:
1 ounce Cyanide of Potash (98 per cent.)
2 fluid ounces Sulphuric Acid.
4 fluid ounces of Water.
The glazed earthenware vessel should be somewhat larger than is
necessary to hold the chemicals, a one or two gallon jar is perhaps the
best container.
Fumigating. The trees, asdug and brought from the field should
be placed in the fumigating house, care being taken to see that they
are free from ‘any considerable quantities of mud or dirt, the trees
should not be fumigated when they are wet asit has been shown that
in this condition they are likely to be injured by the gas. When the
compartment is full of stock, close all openings except the door, place
the jar on the floor near the middle of the room, pour in the required
amount of Water and then slowly pour in the acid. The Cyanide pre-
viously weighed and enclosed in a tight paper bag is now dropped into
the jar and the operator leaves 7mmediately and closes the door /igh/.
The steps in this operation SHOULD NEVER BE VARIED. If water
is poured into the acid a violent action takes place and may be the
cause of injury to the operator. Enclosing the cyanide in a paper bag
makes it convenient and safe to handle and retards the generation of
the gas for a moment after being dropped, thus allowing time to leave
the room and close the door securely.
Keep the room closed for forty minutes, at the end of which time
the door and window should be thrown open, care being taken to avoid
the outward rush of gas. After fifteen minutes of airing the room may
be safely entered and the stock removed, being now ready for packing or
heeling in. After fumigation the contents of the jar should be buried.
