Early Dew Drop
Potatoes.
An extra early variety and a very
heavy producer for an early potato.
The tubers are snow white with
very smooth, velvety skin and shal-
low eyes. No potato can surpass it
Early Dew Drop Potatoes. in uniform and handsome appear-
ance. The quality is exceptionally good, very
much above the average. They are very fine
grained, white as flour and of splendid flavor.
They. are excellent keepers and retain their
good eating qualities till late in the spring,
which. some of the early varieties do not.
Planted on the same piece of land last. season,
at the same time, and with the same treatment,
this potato was the earlier and gave a much
heavier yield than three other standard early
varieties and was but a trifle behind in yield of
some of the late varieties. The vines grow
tall, stand erect and are of vigorous growth. —

Perfection Early Blood Turnip Beet.
This beet we are putting
on the market for the first
time this season after a num-
ber of years of careful selec-
tien,-5
Last year we tried it along
with five of the standard
and most popular early varie-
ties of table beets and found
it far superior to the others
in every way. |
It is very early with ex-
ceedingly small tops, roots
globular and very smooth,
flesh of a bright blood red
color, very crisp, tender and
sweet. It is equally good
for the market or home gar-
den as it is an excellent
keeper as well as being very
early.

ARTICHOKE — Jerusalem.
From four to five bushels will seed
an acre; they should be cut the same
as potatoes, one eye on a piece being
sufficient, planted in May, in rows
three feet apart and about eighteen
inches in the rows, and covered about
two inches deep.
They are the best hog food known,
and are attracting much attention on
account of their great fattening prop-
erties, and for milch cows, they excel
any root grown for increasing the flow
of milk, and make it much richer.
An acre will keep from 20 to 30 hogs
during the fall and winter months.
They are well adapted to any soil
where corn or potatoes can be grown.
Jerusalem Artichoke. Tubers, per quart, 25 cents; per peck, $1.00; per
bushel, $3.00.
ASPARAGUS.
This is one of the first and finest spring relishes which comes to
the table from the garden, and it really requires very little trouble in
cultivation, since a bed once properly made and planted will last
for years. The soil for the bed can hardly be made too rich, and the
fertilizer should be well trenched-in to the depth of 2 feet or more.
The roots should be planted as early in spring as the ground can be
prepared, setting them a foot apart in rows 3 or 4 feet apart, with
the crowns from 4 to 6 inches below the surface of the bed. Aspar- )
agus seeds may be sown directly in the permanent bed and the
plants thinned as they grow; or it may be sown elsewhere, and the seedlings
transplanted the second year. An ounce of seed will sow 50 feet of drill, and
produce about 300 plants. Fair crops may be expected the third year.

CARROTS.
One ounce to one hundred feet of drill;
three to four pounds to the acre.
Carrots require a very finely pulverized
soil to grow them to perfection. A good,
light and well enriched sandy loam is the
best for this crop. For field culture, sow
in drills, three to three and one-half feet
apart, so as to cultivate by horse. Market
gardeners sow in drills about eighteen
inches apart, and cultivate by hand. For
early crops cover one-half an inch deep,
and thin to six inches apart, in the rows;
for late, cover three-fourths of an inch
deep, and thin to four inches. Ox Heart Carrot:

Irish Cobbler.
We have found this
potato to be one of the most re-
liable, extra early potatoes. In
ripening it seems to be more uni-
form than any other sort. Every
hill seems to ripen at the same
time. The potatoes in form are
oval and round. They grow very
smooth, cream white, with few
and shallow eyes. The quality
for early table use is not excelled
by any early variety.

TOMATO.
One ounce will produce fifteen hun-
dred plants. This vegetable is one of
the most important of all garden prod-
ucts. They thrive best in a warm,
light, rich soil. For early plants, sow
about the first week in March in a hot-
bed; or in boxes or pots in a warm
window. When the plants are about
two inches high, set out in boxes, three
inches deep, four inches apart, in the
same temperature, or pot singly. If
again transplanted before setting out,
the plants will be still more stocky.

An erect growing perennial that attains a

It is especially recommended for dry and

qualities make it very valuable for dry situa-
tions, while its extreme hardiness enables it to
withstand our coldest winters without serious
injury. The rootstocks of this variety spread
rapidly under ground, sending up new shoots,
and thus form a close, dense sod. On this ac-
count it should not be sown except where a
permanent grass crop is desired; 20 tbs. to the

CLOVERS.
Prices subject to market changes.
There are no plants so valuable for fertilizers as the clovers. They have
the faculty for absorbing nitrogen from the air, and also of rendering avail-
able much of the inert plant food of the soil. Their long, powerful tap roots
penetrate to a great depth, loosen the soil, admit air, and by their decay add
immensely to the fertility of the soil. The seed may be sown in fall or spring ;
_ the best results will come from sowing in the spring, and is often sown on
the late snows of April.
Medium Red Clover. Pea Vine or Mammoth Clover. Alsike Clover.
White Dutch Clover. Valuable for pasture and for lawns.

varieties of oats ever introduced. The
straw is very stiff holding the heavy
head up well. It is early-and the
grains are large, plump and_ heavy.

vigorous growth, stools out well and
yields an immense crop. ‘They are
pure white in color and are entirely
free from rust and smut. Most oats
raised last season were badly colored,
but the White Victor Oats were white
and handsome. r.

Dunning’s Lawn Grass Seed.
‘This is a mixture of the different varieties of grass seed, which is best suited to this
climate for lawns, grass plots, cemetery lots, etc., and selected with a view of suiting all
soils and situations, and whether used in pastures or lawns, has invariably produced the
best results. It must be remembered, however, that much of the fine appearance of our
lawns depends upon regularity in mowing. If they are left too long in spring before the
operation is begun, or if allowed to grow strong in ‘summer, and, more especially, if not
closely mown at the latest period in autumn, they become coarse, the stronger grass_over-
growing the weaker and the best, the smoothness of the surface being destroyed, and ulti-
mately the whole becoming patchy and unsightly. All lawns should also be regularly
rolled, and, unless the subsoil be a porous, alluvial gravel, should also be thoroughly drained
at their formation. A drain should be carried along at the bottom of each terrace slope, so
that they, may at all times be comfortable to walk upon. ‘The seed may be sown in spring
or fall, but, if sown in hot weather, a slight sowing of oats, which vegetates quickly
among the grass, will serve to protect the springing grass. For forming new lawns, four
bushels are required per acre, or about one quart to each square rod of land, which should
be,.regularly and evenly distributed. Sixteen pounds to the bushel.
A liberal quantity of seed should always be used to insure the best results. Per pound,
25,;cents.. If sent,by mail, add eight cents per pound for postage.
Per bushel of 16 tbs., by Freight or Express, $3.50.

IMMENSE CROPS WITHOUT FERTILIZERS.
oy a> hehe Oe) A new, sure and easy way has recent-
ly been discovered to make worn-out or
poor land enormously productive with-
out fertilizers and almost without ex-
pense. Plants need nitrogen—can’t grow
without it. Heretofore fertilizers have
been needed to put nitrogen into the soil.
Nitrogen is very necessary—is the most
expensive part of fertilizers. The new
way is easier, surer, cheaper—it is to
let nitrogen gathering germs feed the
plants.
The soil is full of air. Air is four-
fifths free nitrogen. Think what limit-
less plant food, in the form of free nitro-
gen, the air contains. Right here the
new discovery comes in. Plants can’t
extract nitrogen from the air,: but there
are germs that can. These germs have
been discovered and are now being used
for that purpose.
These germs, when put into the soil,

work—the farmer gets the profit. They save expense,
reduce the work, increase the crop enormous!y, even
make it possible to grow Alfalfa and other crops where
they never would grow before.
The new way saves the cost of fertilizers, and is very
easy to use. The germs come ready for use, in a form
ealled Nitro-Culture. Nitro-Culture is put up in small
dry packages you can put in your vest pocket. Simply
add it to water, and sprinkle the water over the seeds
before planting. ‘The germs remain on every seed—live
with it—increase about it—feed the roots when they
start and keep on feeding them. ‘They also enrich the
soil by storing nitrogen in it, so that the second year’s
crop, whatever it may be, is increased from two to ten
times.
The U. S. Department of Agriculture says: “It is
worse than useless to attempt to grow any leguminous
crop without being certain of the presence of the bac-
teria which enable the plants to fix free nitrogen. Cer-
tain regions are practically devoid of the right kind of
bacteria, and unless some artificial means of inoculating
the germs be resorted to, the crop will be a failure.”

Agricultural Lime
Hspecially prepared for agricultural purposes, and, being finely ground, it can be used in
any broadcast sower.
Many plants, such as beet, spinach, lettuce, onions, parsnip, onbiaesy cucumbers, potatoes,
peas, beans, turnip, carrots, corn and all grains, show a decided increase and are greatly
benefited by the use of lime, as it corrects all acidity of the soil, sweetening it, and freeing it
from impurities.
Lime properly applied at certain intervals will be found a most perfect renovator, one that
can be relied upon. For the ordinary piece of land that requires lime it ;will be found that
once in the rotation of crops, or, say once in four years, is as often as lime should be applied.
It will hold the land in its proper condition for that length of time.

or cut grass can find its way into the pinions
and clog them.
The adjustments are the simplest, most per-

The Spider Mower is light and strong, and
glides over the lawn lightly, easily and almost
noiselessly ; reminding you strongly, as it nips
off the grass, of the vigorous action of the
ferocious and cunning little insect whose name
it bears. This machine has finely adjusted,
high grade ball bearings, which greatly reduce
the friction and render it possible to use much
wider machines than heretofore with parallel
bearings.
Has two pawls in each pinion, making the
inachine much more positive and durable. The
reel is four bladed and high speeded, which
leaves the lawn with a very smooth and velvety

Fairbanks Horizontal Gasoline Engine.
The Fairbanks Engine is ex-
tremely simple in construction and
operation, both from a mechanical
and a practical standpoint; the
impulse being accomplished with
a minimum of fuel consump-
tion and loss of energy, the gov-
ernor mechanism assuring con-
sumption of fuel only when re-
quired, making an overcharge of
fuel practically impossible. The
governor and ignition mechanisms
are designed to perform their re
spective functions with the small-
est possible amount of the friction
(with its consequent loss of energy)
which in many engines is so fatal
to economy. Send for catalogue

The Champion Self=-Feed Drag Saw Machine.
LEADS ALL OTHERS.
Capacity 20 to 40 Cords Per

ee
The Reason Why This Machine’ Will Please You.
The operator can raise saw with one hand and throw self-feed in gear with the other, thus
changing and setting for a new cut with no stopping of team or slowing of motion whatever.
The self-feeding machine moves the log automatically along the carriage; while with an old
style hand-feed machine the log must always be moved by hand. The main length of our
log carriage is 12 feet, and the length which attaches on is 8 feet, making together a splen-
did length of carriage.
We furnish a Disston champion-tooth saw, which has been found to give the best results
and is absolutely satisfactory. It is 5144 feet long, 7x5 inches. No. 10 gauge.
It is operated with any kind of power—Tread power, Water-power, Wind-mill or .Steam-
engine, and can be run by either a belt or tumbling-rod.
The main shaft is 1%-inch steel in No. 1 machine, and projects sufficiently outside or be-
yond the frame of the machine, and is at such a height above the ground, that it gives an
abundance of room for the belt-wheel, which is 24x4 inches. “
The Pitman Boxes are so arranged that they are easily adjusted to compensate for any
wear that may occur. All boxes are babbitted and are durable.
The stroke of saw can be adjusted to either 16, 20 or 24 inches.
Pe feet of Log Carriage, Trucks, Rollers, Dogs, etc., are always furnished with this
outfit.

able. It has a set of runners, not shown in cut,
which regulate the depth of cultivation. When
the weeder is used on soft ground, and shallow
cultivation is desired, the runners may be set
so as to cultivate at the depth desired. They
are also very useful in transporting the weeder
to and from the field and from one field to =
another. ;

Can be expanded to 71% feet and nar-
rowed to 30 inches.
Narrowed to 30 inches. Expanded to 7 1=2 feet.
The “KEYSTONB” is the only Weeder that is adjustable to any depth and width.
It can be used as a shallow cultivator—working close to the plants between the rows
until the crops mature—long after other weeders are laid aside.
It has no shafts that will hinder working close to the fence.
IT WILL NOT CLOG—The long, curved, spring teeth are so placed and shaped that
clogging is impossible. ;
It is V shaped, which not only makes it a stronger tool than the straight framed weeders,
put adapts itself much better to uneven surface.

Fuller’s Unique Wheel Hoe No2.
_ For closely planted crops, as Beets, Carrots,
Onions, ete., this hoe is without an equal and
can be used the entire season. Having only
one wheel it runs between the rows without
bruising the tops, and having’ no frame work
it does not tear the growing plants on either
side. The great feature of this hoe above all
others is that it can be easily and quickly ad-
\\ justed to any height or pitch desired by means
Ky of thumb nuts. The entire hoe weighs less
than ten pounds and yet isa most practical tool.
Price $2.50.

Fuller’s Unique Wheel Hoe No. 1.
For cutting over yards or avenues, walks
and driveways in cemeteries and parks Fuller’s
Unique Wheel Hoe No. 1 stands far ahead of
all other tools. It is light, strong and durable
and does most satisfactory work where other
hoes have failed. The steel blades are ex-
ceptionally hard and heavy so as to give little
wear and great resistance. Being easily ad-
justed to any height or pitch, the long tedious
work of the hand hoe is superseded by ease
and facility.
Price $2.50.
\ Fuller’s Daisy Scuffle Hoe No. 4.
This scuffle hoe is far in advance of the common
scuffe hoes on the market, in that it cuts both ways hav-
ing both edges of the knife sharpened and the start
pitched so that it cuts equally with a draw motion toward
the operator as with a push from the one using the tool.
The handles are of ash six feet long. Those who have
used it like it very much for hoeing over small yards and
short walks, for hoeing between rows of closely planted
crops, where a quick stirring of the top soil is desired.
It can be used wherever a scuffle hoe is commonly used,
with much better results.
Price 60 Cents.
Fuller’s Daisy Scuffle Hoc No.5. =
No. 5 is a short handled scuffle hoe of very light, narrow steel
for hoeing and thinning celery, lettuce and all similar crops.
‘The handle is four feet long and the steel is of good quality and
bent as seen on the accompanying cut, so that there will be no
clogging. It can be used in various ways, so that the entire
weeding can be accomplished easier and much quicker than by
ordinary methods.

This is the same as the Garden Drill, with
cultivating attachments. It can be_ used
either as a Double Wheel or Single Wheel
machine and change can be readily made.
We do not particularly recommend a two-
wheel seed sower, as the nicer work may be
accomplished by a one wheel machine. The
two wheels are desirable, however, when used
as a cultivator or wheel hoe, as in this way
the rows of young plants may be straddled
and the cultivating done on both sides of the
rows at one passing.
Price $8.00.

Specially Designed for Working Both Sides of the Row at

This new hand implement embraces all the good points of older
efforts in the same line, and in addition offers new features which
can not fail of appreciation. The special recommendation is the
ADJUSTABLE ARCH, by which not only the depth of work can
be gauged, but which, by an ingenious device, enables the teeth to
be pitched at any angle desired.
There are nine adjustments of depth. The attachments are:
1 pair Hoes, 4 Cultivator Teeth, 1 pair Plows, 1 pair Rakes and 1
pair Vine or Leaf Guards. Price, $5.00.

The Morgan Spading Harrow is an “all

adapted to all soils and conditions of soils.
While not particularly attractive or handsome
in appearance, a trial will convince any farmer
that it will do the work. As a pulverizer, it
is unequalled, and especially on broken or un-
even surfaces, among stones, in sod or heavy
clay. It kas more cutting surfaces than any
pulverizer in the market. The high arched
frame allows it to pass over obstructions easily.
The blades are S-shaped and ground sharp on
the cutting edges and overlap; they cut into
and lift the soil to a depth of 4 to 6 inches,
turning and pulverizing the ground precisely
. ; like the hand spade. The gangs which float
freely can be adjusted to any desired angle by the hand levers. The cleaners are stationary
and clean the blades, no matter what the condition of the soil.

FOR WATERING STOCK IN STABLES.

Water in the stable is a necessity for the proper caring of the stock; it should be of
suitable temperature, and the stock should have constant access to it.
This is the most practical and economical device for*watering cattle in the stable. The
iron basins can be kept clean much easier than any form of wooden troughs and there js
nothing to wear or rot out.
The check valve at the bottom of each basin prevents clogging of pipes because no hay,
meal or other substances can be drawn into them. It also greatly prevents the spread of
contagious disease, as the supply of each basin is drawn directly from the main reservoir.
Water from a spring or reservoir is piped into a small tank, and the level of water in the
basins is controlled automatically by a float valve or an overflow in this tank.

BUG DEATH.
This Insecticide and Plant Food Combined
bas been on the market for nine years and its
sales have shown qa large increase each year.
We can say to our customers that Wehine
Bug Death our fullest endorsement. While
the first cost to kill the bugs on an acre of
potatoes is rather more than the arsenical in-
secticides, the results at harvesting time are
entirely satisfactory, and where practical tests
have been made, the extra yield of marketable
potatoes has more than paid the entire ex-
pense. It is non=poisonous, which makes it
perfectly safe to use on all plants or vines.
Very Beneficial Results are obtained by
using Bordeaux Mixture in connection with
Bug Death, and they can be mixed and
sprayed on the vines at the same time, with
any of the spraying machines on the market
for that purpose. Bug Death prevents blight.

Pat. March 16 and Noy, 9, 1897.
Pat. in Canada Nov. 2. 1897,
Use Bug Death for your fruit trees. It kills
the insect pests, protects the trees, pro-
motes their vigorous growth, gives freedom to
the bees, and insures quality and quantity of
fruit.
No other agent can do this. Bug Death must be the reliauce of the fruit grower, who
by spraying seeks after perfect fruit.
Bug Death costs you nothing. The increased yield and improved quality more than pays
the expense. <A perfectly sure, safe and effective insecticide.
Bug Death kills the potato, squash and cucumber bug, currant and tomato worm, also
other plaut and vine eating pests.
Directions for Spraying One Acre of Potatoes with Bug Death.
Fill a pail or bucket, holding about 12 quarts, half full of water. Stir 15 to 25 Is. Bug
Death into this water (the larger amount will pay best). Fill sprayer tank nearly full with
clear water (not too cold), then pour Bug Death from bucket into tank and start machine at
once, being sure that agitator is working properly.
Directions for Spraying One Acre of Potatoes with Bug Death and
Bordeaux Mixture.
Dissolve 6 Ibs. copper sulphate (blue vitriol) in 6 gallons of water. Slack 6 Ibs. lump limé,
slewly adding water as it slacks, being careful not to burn the lime. When thoroughly
slucked, strain it through about a No. 50 wire strainer to remove any lumps before it goes
into sprayer. When ready to spray, fill tank two-thirds full of clear water (not too cold) and
add the 6 gallons blue vitriol water. Next put in 15 to 25 Ibs. Bug Death (first mix Bug
Death in pail of water, same as under directions for using Bug Death alone). Fill tank
almost full of clear water; lastly put in the lime water. Stir well with a stick and start
machine at once, being sure that agitator is working properly. Bug Death kills all insects
and being very adhesive holds the mixture on to the vines throughout the season, and can be
applied in damp weather as rain will not wash it off.
The above solution, if properly applied, will positively prevent blight on potatoes, tomatoes,
ete.

ENGLISH BUG COMPOUND.
A BUG KILLING WONDER.
A safe, sure and cheap insecticide for destroying the pests, which attack Potato Vines,
Oabbages, Squash, Cucumber, Melons, Tobacco, Currant, Rose Bushes (Chafer), Pear
Cherry, Plum, or Quince Slug, Grapevine. Flea Beetle, Raspberry, Gooseberry, Small
Shrubs, or for killing any coleopterous Bug whatever.
English Bug Compound kills every coleopterous insect known. It is a combination of
chemical poison and fertilizers, mechanically incorporated in a manner that prevents loss of
strength by evaporation or by age. It is a dark, gray colored, flour fine powder, and its
application to the afflicted plant, kills the bugs at once and promotes the growth when the
insects are destroyed. ,
It is an established fact that a Paris Green water mixture produces a lifeless, soggy potato;
while the use of English Bug Compound (at a great ultimate saving) brings forth a healthy,
hardy, nutritious vegetable. The smallest grain acts as a deadly poison to the bugs and is
foed and drink to the vine. The extreme fineness allows a most thorough distribution and
the smallest quantity will spread itself over a large space.
Send for circular showing testimonials from some of the prominent farmers who have used
English Bug Compound. We sold a carload of these goods last year and found them verf
priests English Bug Compound does not burn or injure the vines, and is sure death te

PERF ECTION SPRAYER.
-
‘a The most practical potato sprayer ever put on thé ebet it can be attached to any wagon,
is very simple in construction and durable, nothing about it to get out of order.
This sprayer was. got up to meet the demand for a practical and efficient sprayer at a low
price. The power sprayers that have been put on the market during the last few seasons
have proved very unsatisfactory, and at a price that is much more than the average farmer is
yilling to pay.
= This sprayer is fitted ‘ieeeetroat with brass_ connectioas, and high pressure rubber fee the
quid not coming in contact with the iron pipe in any -way.
- In a great many of the sprayers that are put on the market, the liquid is conducted to the
spray nozzle through iron pipe, the action of the Bordeaux Mixture on this pipe soon Gorrodes
it causing the pipe to clog and become unfit for use, =~"
- The pump is of large size, strongly constructed, and very powerful, it is also very easy
wolking, one man can easily- ‘drive the team and work the pump.
This sprayer is always ready to do the work when wanted, it has no complicated parts to
get out of order. It is sure, effective and cheap, and is so simple in construction that a

The pump has a dasher agitator which keeps the liquid thoroughly mixed, and is fitted to

Paint Facts that Will Save
You Money and Trouble
=2 HERWIN-WILLIAMS Paint, Prepared, is the best
© (os you to use on your house, outside or inside.
It is also the most economical in every way.
It covers the most surface to the gallon.
It works easily and saves labor.
It is permanent in color and wears to the limit of
paint endurance, because it contains only pure materials, carefully
tested, finely ground, and combined by formulas which insure uni-
formity and good results.
_ When you buy paint whose only recommendation is that it is
cheap by the gallon, you are making a costly mistake.
‘‘Cheap’’ paint contains inferior materials that give inferior
working and spreading qualities. It wastes labor, and deteriorates
under the weather so as to necessitate frequent repainting. Its cost
by the job is greater than that of. good paint which covers more sur-
face to the gallon, looks better and wears much longer.
Sherwin-Williams Paint has every good economical quality that
care and skill of manufacture can give. We guarantee it to give you
satisfaction. =
