IRISH ROSES

We take pleasure in offering a select list of Roses, heavy plants, which will easily pay for themselves in
bloom the first year. Why not have the best, since a good plant requires no more space or care than a poor one
(except to pick the extra blooms)? A Rose garden cannot be made of weeds. Of thousands of varieties, not more
than one hundred are worth growing in any given locality, unless one has a very large Rose garden. Some
varieties do well in one sec-
tion, some in another.

When we say we have only
first-class varieties and first-
class plants of all colors of
Roses, including several of
the best yellow sorts, we are
prepared to back up our
statements; and, asthe Rose
has long been acknowl-
edged the “‘ queen of flow-
ers,’ and has held its place
as such among nearly all
flower lovers, we have spared
no pains to provide our cus-
tomers with heavy two- and
three-year-old plants, which
will produce grand blooms
the first season. We offer
several thousand plants,
grown by Dickson & Sons,
of Ireland, including Killar-

. sin — ney, Mildred Grant, Harry
N IMPROVED DOROTHY PERKINS Kirk, Frau Karl Druschki,
Mrs. David Jardine, etc.

That we have succeeded in pleasing the public may be seen from the increased demand and the many letters
of commendation from our customers. f

LADY GAY, |

Prices of Roses, Spring of 1909

All Roses offered in our General Cat-
alogue, including Climbers, Rugosas,

Buyers Please Bear in Mind

These prices are not for home-grown or Holland stock. Irish

Roses are as much superior to ordinary stock as superior soil and Sweetbriars, Hybrid Perpetuals, Hybrid
climate and 50 years’ training in Rose-growing can produce. To Teas, etc., not named on next page, will
produce such stock, strong one-year plants are set in spring and be furnished at 35 cts. each, $3.50
grown two years in the field; quite different from plants started per doz., $25 per 100.

port, where the gardeners are known to be as well up in their h f ;
profession as any in the country, is proof positive of the quality No charges for boxes or packing.
of our stock. One of many enthusiasts writes:

North American Loan and Trust Company, Huron, South Dakota, Feb. 22, 1906.
S. G. Harris, Esq. Tarrytown, N. Y.

The Roses had of you last spring were a fine lot. They were the most satisfactory I have ever received. And
one of the best points is that I feel that I have my Roses true to name,

We cut Roses every day from June 20 until after the first frost in Nov.; from one plant of Killarney we cut 19
blooms. Far northerners, like myself, should not plant any but field-grown stock that is well matured and dormant
when planted, I have had experience with other stocks, and have not a single Rose alive out of perhaps a hundred,
and have always bought what they call their two- and three-year-old Roses.

I should be pleased to receive your General Catalogue. I have a small space in which to add to my 200 plants.

Very truly, Jas. McD. Campbell,

There were reasons for their strong recommendation.

First. The plants were grown by Rose-growers of over fifty years’ experience, in the north of Ireland, where
soil and climate conspire to produce plants of great vigor, strong roots and well-ripened wood.

SECOND. The plants were very low-budded, so that in planting the bud or graft is easily placed 2 or 3 inches
below the surface of the ground (as it should be) without the necessity of too deep planting of the roots.

THIRD. The plants are kept perfectly dormant from the time they are dug until they reach our customers.
On arrival, late in November, we place them in deep trenches and cover with earth until shipping time By this
method there is no drying out of the roots, as there is where stored in buildings.

FourtH. Our method of packing insures arrival in perfect condition.

A I 4 ; IRIS, ROSE and PEONY EXHIBIT. While visitors are always welcome to
n invitation. our Nurseries, yet a special invitation is extended to the public to visit us in June.
If those interested will write us we shall be pleased to name the best dates as soon as the season shows itself to
be normal or otherwise.

The Nursery is located on the State road, half way between East View, on the Putnam Branch, and
Hawthorne, on the Harlem Branch of the N. Y. C. R. R., 1% miles from each station. Carriages meet all trains
at Hawthorne, fare 25 cts.

A CARLOAD OF EVERCREENS

Mr. S. G. Harris, Tarrytown, N. Y. Edgewood, Millbrook, Dutchess Co.. N. Y., June 8, 1907.

I have delayed writing you until I could give you a full report as to the carload of trees. They arrived the day after being shipped
and were all planted within 36 hours, *“ * * and I think we shall have great success with them. I am greatly pleased with the quality
of the trees you sent and the careful way in which they were packed, and thank you for your attention to the matter, your visit up
here and the sketch which you sent, and which I found very useful, H. Harkness Flagler.

The following varieties, all things considered, are fully equal to any twelve of their class (H.P.). Some rosa-

which may be substituted if the purchaser prefers. For description of these Roses and others, including Sweet-

JOHNSTOWN, N. Y,, July 15, 1908.

Will you kindly tell me the name of the enclosed flowers.
Mrs. Oliver is spending a few days with us and has gone crazy
over our old-fashioned flower garden. Everything in it is doing

PRICES AND DISCOUNTS

The prices of trees and shrubs which follow include boxing and packing. The reason
the price of the single plant seems higher in proportion is that the cost of packing a single plant is often
as much as for several. On wholesale orders for 10 or more of a kind and size, therefore, we are prepared
to make a liberal discount as follows: 10 to 50 plants of one kind and size 20 per cent, 50 to 250 plants of
one kind and size Z5 per cent, from the single rates where the price per 10 and per 100 is not given.

On orders for assorted lots of one to ten of each kind and size, we will give the following discounts
from the rate of each, namely: Orders amounting to $10 to $20,5 per cent discount; $20 to $50, 10 per
cent; $50 to $100, 15 per cent; $100 up, 20 per cent.

HARDY PERENNIALS

; We offer hundreds of the best varieties of Hardy Perennials, including
A_Word About Prices. About Prices. Asters, Chrysanthemums, Columbines, Ferns, Hollyhocks, Larkspurs, Lilies,
etc., at 15 cts. each, $1.50 per doz. Only the few varieties named below differing from this price.

We have greatly increased our facilities for supplying the old-fashioned flowers, including improved new
hybrids and many varieties especially adapted to the Alpine and rock-garden.
Prices of all Hardy Perennials listed in our catalogue, not named on this page, will be furnished at 15 cts. each,
$1.50 per doz.

Six at dozen rates, fifty at hundred rates, provided not less than three of a kind are ordered. No charge for
boxing and packing orders amounting to $5 or more.

EVERGREEN TREES

All our Evergreen Trees have been transplanted several times, so that they have developed ample fibrous
roots to transfer in safety from our grounds to yours. We take great care, also, to burlap the roots in a large
ball of earth, except cheap and small sizes. Among many species we offer are some of the cheaper sorts
for screens and hedges; also, choice specimens of the more rare and beautiful Colorado Blue Spruce, Oriental
Spruce, Nordmann’s Fir, White Pine. Muzho Pine, Swiss Stone Pine, Japanese Umbrella Pine, Arborvite, Hem-
lock, Retinosporas, Junipers, etc. We invite correspondence with those desiring to plant Evergreen Trees, and
offer information as to proper time and method of handling the different species. Special estimates for large
numbers. See General Catalogue.
