Location

Our nurseries occupy 200 acres of rich rolling
farm land at Glen View, IIl., seventeen miles
northwest of Chicago, a forty-five minute ride on
the C., M. & St. P. R. R.

Shipping Facilities
Being a suburb of Chicago, the greatest rail-

way terminus in America, we can assure direct
routing and prompt delivery.

Quality

Our land is kept thoroughly fertilized and care-
fully cultivated during the entire growing season.

We plant farther apart, fertilize more fre-
quently, and transplant oftener than the average
nursery because our business is founded on
quality. That is why we produce the very finest
stock—plants that are more sturdy, larger and bet-
ter shaped, with plumper branches and completer
root systems than those offered by the ordinary
nursery and intended to sell in a price competition.

Large Specimens

Frequent reference will be found to extra large
specimens which we will be able to furnish. This
affords an unusual opportunity to secure matured
plants, by means of which immediate results may
be obtained.

Extensive Assortment

Our list is uncommonly large and contains
more than 900 different varieties of trees, shrubs,
vines, evergreens and old-fashioned perennials.

We carry such a‘large variety because it en-
ables us to fill all orders from our own stock, no
matter how many varieties are specified—thus
avoiding for our patrons the uncertainty and in-
convenience of applying to several nurseries for
portions of such orders.

Tested Varieties

Every one of the varieties which we list has
been tested and found perfectly hardy in north-
ern Illinois. We have in this manner been able
to secure a large number of valuable additions to
the sorts usually offered in the ordinary nursery.

INTRODUCTORY

We will furnish fifty plants of same kind at

hundred rates—five at ten rates. In listing our
stock, we have stated exact sizes and price for
each size, thus making it convenient for the pur-
chaser to choose the specimen that exactly meets
his requirements.

Measurement of Trees and Shrubs

All plants are measured as they stand in the
nursery before digging. Measurements for height
are taken from the ground to the top of the
plant. In trailing plants the length of the branches
is taken instead of the height. Measurements
for caliper of trees are taken above the ground
a distance equal to the diameter of the tree.

Guarantee and Planting

The experience, as well as reputation of Swain
Nelson, & Sons Company, covering two genera-
tions, is the purchaser’s surest guarantee of good
values and square treatment.

For a reasonable additional charge we will
plant and warrant all goods ordered from us.
We will also design the scheme of planting, will
arrange the grouping so as to secure the most
harmonious effects and produce most pleasing con-
trasts of color and form. We send our expert
gardeners to prepare the \ground and plant the
stock in a correct and scientific manner.

Packing

All goods are packed in the most careful man-
ner, thus avoiding risk of damage if delayed in
transit. The only charges for packing are for
the cost of materials used.

State Inspection

Our nursery is inspected annually by the State
Entomologist, and a copy of the certificate of the
last inspection is sent with each shipment.

Errors or Omissions

We will adjust all mistakes in the execution
of orders if notified immediately upon receipt of
goods.

DIRECTIONS FOR PRUNING AND PLANTING

Preparation of Ground

HE first essential to successful planting is
fe a thorough preparation of the ground, either

by deep trenching or by digging large holes,
refilling them with good fertile soil, and having
them well-drained.

Selection

The second essential is the selection of well
grown trees, and- shrubs, free from any blemish
or weakness, and with an abundance of fibrous
roots. Granted the above conditions large trees
may be transplanted as successfully as small ones,
and they will produce shade and ornament at
once, instead of many years later, as is the case
with ordinary nursery trees.

Planting

Before setting the tree all bruised or broken
roots should be cut back to the sound wood with
a sharp knife. The tops should be pruned in
proportion to the roots that have been cut.

Our trees usually need very little pruning and
our shrubs none at all.

The plant should be set not more than two
inches deeper than it stood in the nursery, as
indicated by the soil mark on the trunk. The
roots should be spread out in their natural posi-
tions, and as the fine soil is covered over them
it should be tamped down solid and rammed be-
tween the roots, making sure that no air spaces
are left under the tree.

Watering

Water at time of planting only in case the soil
is dry. Pour sufficient water into the hole after
it is two-thirds full to thoroughly moisten the
soil,
Then finish filling the hole and planting the tree.

Care After Planting

To obtain the best results it is necessary to give
the tree good care for a year or two after plant-
ing. When the warm weather sets in the tree
should be mulched, that is, fresh manure, about
four inches thick, ’ should be spread around the
tree to hold the moisture in the earth. When
the weather becomes very dry the tree should be
watered thoroughly every two weeks, and the soil
about it kept loose by hoeing, as in a corn field.

Pruning

To the repeated inquiry as to the best time and
method of pruning deciduous trees and shrubs,
it may be answered, that no single rule can be
laid down that will apply to all cases. Shrubs,
like trees, are pruned for different purposes, and
what is good practice in one case-may be ruinous
in another. A tree for the lawn requires differ-
ent treatment from an avenue tree, and the rule
for pruning an apple tree to induce an abundant
yield of the best fruit would not apply to another
tree where shade or ornament is desired.

For general purposes, therefore, neither trees nor
shrubs should ever be cut back so far as to im-
pair their vigor nor should they be pruned so as
to destroy their natural outlines. They should
rather have the weak shoots thinned out and
their strong ones pruned cautiously so as to de-
velop their best form.

Shrubs like Spireza Van Houttei, which bloom
early on wood of the previous year, where it is
desired to secure abundant flowers, should not be
pruned in autumn or early Spring, but imme-
diately after the blooming season.

Shrubs that bloom late on wood of the cur-
rent year, such as hydrangeas, roses, etc., should
be pruned after the leaves fall in autumn or be-
fore they start in early spring.
