THEO. BURT & SONS

MELROSE, OHIO

1914 rtittg 1914

In preparing this our twelfth annual catalogue we want to again thank our many
friends and customers for their liberal patronage, which has made the past year one of the
most successful in our history. The constant and steady increase of our business each
successive year is the best of evidence as to the high quality of our seeds and the satis-
faction they are giving our customers. We cannot talk to everybody personally and still
would like you to be acquainted with our business and business methods. Our new cata-
alogue is quite a little larger than the ones we had past seasons We have added Garden
Seed Department for the convenience of our customers; listing only the leading varieties
with brief, not exaggerated descriptions. Our aim has been in the past and still is to help
our customers in getting the best products from their lands, by furnishing them good
seeds of strong vitality, and, what is more, of the best strains. To that end we are always
more willing to pay top prices for the seeds we buy, than to stand any risk. We believe
that by so doing we serve our own interests as well as those of our customers and the
steady increase we have experienced in the volume of business done is a gratifying proof
that we are right in our belief. We wish all of our customers a happy and prosperous
New Year, and respectfully solicit a continuance of your orders, which shall always have
our best and most careful attention.

permission to substitute for varieties that we may not have.

OUR LOCATION. We are located in north-western Ohio, Paulding County about
40 miles south of the Michigan State line, the best Corn and Oats growing district of the
State. Try our Northern Ohio Grown Seeds. They will not disappoint you.

SELECTED SEED OATS

We have always realized the importance of supplying growers with the best selected
seed oats. We can truly say that our efforts in this direction have resulted in our customers
obtaining increased yields by sowing our superior seed. We are in a better position this
season than ever before to supply our customers with the very best seed obtainable. We
have now installed in our Seed House a Compound Seed Grader and Separator. This
machine runs by power at the speed of 400 revolutions per minute. As the grain passes
down through the head of this machine there is a heavy suction of air that lifts all light
grains out of the seed. The heavier grain then passes down and runs over seven sections
of screens which take out all the smaller grains, leaving nothing but large, plump, heavy
seed that will weigh from 38 to 40 pounds per measured bushel. We believe we are safe
in saying that we are now better equipped to furnish better seed than any other seedmen.
Good, heavy seed of this kind will certainly grow under almost any condition and greatly
increase the yield of your crop. We hope you will favor us with your order for all the
seed that you expect to sow this spring, as it will be one of the best investments that you
ever made. Our Regenerated Swedish Select and Improved American Oats are the two
best varieties that we have ever grown. They are highly recommended by Experiment
Stations everywhere. We want you to give them a trial this season and see difference
for yourself. Once tried you will grow no other kind.

SWEDISH SELECT OATS

Regenerated Stock

The Swedish Select Oats are so
well and favorably known through-
out the whole country that it seems
hardly worth while to give a de-
scription of them. The past season
these oats have gained a splendid
reputation and made some wonder-
ful yields. It is not unusual to see
fields growing upwards of 100 bush-
els per acre with grain weighing as
much as 45 lbs. per measured bu.

They are certainly taking the lead
at the present time and it is proba-
ble they will continue to do so.
They have a branch head, the straw
is heavily walled, hence it does not
lodge readily. The grain is very
large and heavy and ahheres firmly
to the branches.

Hull is very thin making an ex-
cellent feeding oats. We have some
excellent seed of this variety thor-
oughly recleaned and graded that
tests 40 lbs. per bushel. You can-
not buy better seed at double our
price. Sow a field of Swedish Oats
this spring and you will be in a posi-
tion to furnish your neighbors with
seed next year at a good price.
Price  as  follows:  1 bushel  $1.00;

IMPROVED AMERICAN
OATS

We take much pride in being able to offer
this wonderful new variety of oats to our custom-
ers this season. We have found them the most
satisfactory of all varieties tested in this section
under all conditions. While the heaviest crops
are grown on rich soils it is remarkable how they
yield under poor conditions compared with
others. This fine and very productive variety
has been thoroughly tested in different sections
with gratifying results, with yields from 75 to 100
bushels of the finest grain per acre. Improved
American Oats is a fine white variety. Yields
enormously. Branch head, grain very heavy
and medium early. At the Ohio Experiment
Station and also at the Paulding County Experi-
ment Farm these oats stand at the top of the list
as the best yielders among a score or more varieties tested.
On rich soil the straw grows from 4 to 4| feet high with
long well filled heads. The manner of growth of Improved
American Oats, together with its thick walled straw, makes
this variety one that will stand up under almost any con-
dition and insure splendid crop of oats. From past
experience with this oat we wish to state that the farmer
who wants to produce more bushels of oats per acre should
give these oats a trial. They will not disappoint you.
Sow bushels per acre. Price 1 bushel $1.00; 5 bu.
95c. bu; 10 bu. 90c. bu; 25 bu. or more 85c. per bu.

CHOICE SELECTED SEED CORN

It costs very little more to get the newest and most improved varieties of seed corn than to
Use old run out and mixed sorts. Why the American farmer does not change his seed corn oftener
We cannot understand. No seed on earth flourishes as well and returns such bountiful crops by
u change of seed as corn and every farmer should get the best. Our seed this year is better than
ever before During the winter every ear is carefully selected by hand and the small grain shelled
off the point. It is then left unshelled as it keeps best that. way. Near planting time it is again
sorted, tested and is guaranteed to be of superior germinating quality. Owing to the scarcity
of good seed corn We wvould advise all to place their order early. Would appreciate your order.

IMPROVED EARLY LEAMING

The Superior value of our Improved Early Learning Corn has never been disputed. Every
year increases its popularity. Many varieties are brought out each year and placed upon the
market With glowing claims, but are soon forgotten. Improved Early Learning, thoroughly
tested by time (the best of tests) continues to be the best corn of all. Planted sparingly at first,
it has fully merited and gained the confidence of thousands of American farmers. Far from
being a novelty it is a standard variety of established merit and fully able to sound its own praises.
Improved Early Learning possesses all the original good qualities of the Old Learning variety
together with the improvements brought about by years of careful breeding. The variety as we
now have it, bears a strong resemblance to its parent, but is much larger, more uniform in growth,
more distinct in type, more symmetrical in shape, etc. On good land the stalks grow tall, two
good ears on each stalk. The ears are long with from 1 6 to 24 rows of grain which are of medium
size. Red cob well filled to the end. It ripens in 95 to 100 days and makes a good crop even in
a dry season, by reason of its strong vigorous growth. Our seed this season is better than ever
before. If you want to raise a great big crop of the best corn you ever saw, send us an order for
our Improved Early Learning, you are going to be mighty well pleased with it. Get your order
in early as we expect a heavy demand for this seed this spring.

Price 1 peck 75c.; half bushel $1.25; 1 bushel $2.00; 3 bushels or more at $1.75 per bushel.

In the ear extra selected $2.50 per bushel.

REID’S YELLOW DENT

Reid's Yellow Dent is a corn that every farmer should give a trial. You will find that it
possesses great vigor and hardiness. More of this corn is grown in the western states than any
other variety, It is adapted to a wide range of soil and variety of climates. The ears are of a
light golden color running from 8 to 12 inches in lengths, 7 to 10 inches in circumference with
from 18 to 24 rows of Kernels. The ears are cylindrical shape from butt to tip. The cob
carries a large amount of corn, shelling 85 to 88 per cent, grain. The butts and tips are partic-
ularly well filled. This corn is a vigorous grower, with stocks 8 to 10 feet high, having an
abundance of foliage and makes excellent ensilage, producing a heavy tonnage to the acre. We
cannot too strongly urge our customers to plant at least a part of their crop to this variety of
corn. In short, it is a sure cropper, withstanding drought to a remarkable degree. It is a
big yielder, and can always be depended upon as an all around field corn. Our seed on this
variety has been selected very carefully. It is then shelled and graded. You will not find any
better seed anywhere than we are shipping. Our seed of this variety is limited and you should
place your order at once. Peck 75c.; one-half bu. $1.25; bushel $2 00; 3 bushels or more at
$1.75 per bushel.

heavy stalk, and therefore produces a large, well filled ear with from 18 to 26 rows. It is a
splendid  corn,  and  a safe  corn  to  plant.  Season  medium  late.  Peck  75c. ; one-half  bu.  $1.25;

quality. Many of our customers prefer this variety of corn to any other. We have a Very nice

quire much labor to grow beans, and they do not

legume and gathers a large per cent of its nourish-
ment from the air. Try a field of these beans this
