The Burpee-Quality in Seeds

Philadelphia, January 1, 1914.

THE steady increase from year to year in the BURPEE BUSINESS is due not
only to the constantly widening circle of planters who have confidence in
our strains of seeds, but also to the fact that intelligent Dealers in Seeds
recognize that it pays to handle High Grade SEEDS OF THE BURPEE-QUALITY
and thus make pleased customers.

OUR OLD CUSTOMERS, — many of twenty to thirty years’ standing, —
need no new assurance of fidelity on our part. The Burpee
reputation for SEEDS OF QUALITY has been builded upon
an aim always to maintain the truth of our motto: —

Burpee’s Seeds Grow and are
The Best Seeds that can be Grown

In thirty-seven years of successful seed selling we have
introduced more Novelties that are now in general cultivation than have any
three other firms. We produce Selected Stocks upon our own seed farms in
Pennsylvania, New Jersey and California, while FORDHOOK FARMS are
famous as the largest trial grounds in America. No Government Experi-
mental Station attempts such complete trials each season, and the information
here obtained is of incalculable benefit both to planters and seedsmen
everywhere.

For honest descriptions that really describe the characteristics of the
various Vegetables and Flowers, with illustrations from photographs, kindly
consult our Retail Catalog, copy of which has been already mailed to you.

The printed prices have been fixed at actual values as they appear to-day.
Wherever possible, however, we shall be pleased to make Special Quotations
by mail or wire to buyers of large quantities. Trusting to be favored with
your orders throughout the season, and assuring you of prompt and faithful
attention,

We remain, sincerely yours,

Telegraphic Cipher (or Cable Code)

FOR WEIGHTS AND MEASURES.

The telegraphic cipher word for quantities must always precede the cipher words for
seed, hut if the same quantity of several varieties is ordered, the cipher word meaning that
quantity need he placed only before the first. For example :

Arad Jaundice, Jean, Benares, Calliope, Lamprey, Malmo Balcony, would mean,
ship at once, cheapest route, ten pounds each Helen Pierce and Janet Scott Sweet Peas,
twenty-five pounds each Burpee’s Allhead Early Cabbage and Burpee’s Earliest Way-
ahead Lettuce and ten bushels Burpee’s Stringless Green-Pod Bean.

Our customers will find this a very inexpensive way of wiring their orders, hut we must
caution them that care be taken in writing out the messages, as we cannot hold ourselves
responsible for errors arising from incomplete messages or incorrect translation.

IMPORTANT.— This telegraphic cipher must be used ONLY on orders by telegraph or cable, and
never in written orders sent by mail.

Best Seeds that Grow for 1914,

Tested and Proved at our Fordhook Farms.

THIS PACKAGE (IF UNBROKEN) CONTAINS ONE OUNCE OF

Here follows the same “ electrotyped ’ ’ label as printed on our packet bags, —
giving in full the name of the variety, and in case of the more impor-
tant Vegetables and Flowers, also an illustration, description, and
frequently directions for culture. Every package bears our full firm
name, and is neatly printed in black ink, presenting a more attractive
appearance than do the usual gaudy lithographed bags.

Every ounce-package is dated as above.

Packets, although not dated (because the electrotypes generally require the
entire front of the bag), are all filled with the same choice quality of the

Best Seeds that Grow for 1914.

W. ATLEE BURPEE & CO., Seed Growers.

Seeds of the best quality cost very much more to produce than do seeds of the ordinary
commercial grade. And yet many merchants, having little or no knowledge of the value of
High =class Seeds, purchase their supplies wherever they can be obtained the cheapest. It
was brought to our notice that some merchants would buy a bill of seeds from us, obtain copies
of our catalogs and show-cards, and then purchase a portion of their supplies from other
seedsmen, who, growing “ cheap seeds,' ’ could sell at much lower prices. In many cases
planters who purchased from their local merchants, thinking that they were obtaining
BURPEE’S SEEDS, got only a few of our seeds (perhaps in packets), and often the seeds
bought by weight or measure were of inferior quality, falsely sold on our reputation, but for
which we were not in any way responsible.

This deception was brought so prominently to our attention some years ago that we debated
seriously whether we should not decline altogether to sell BURPEE’S SEEDS at wholesale.

Further consideration, however, showed us that this would hardly be fair to the honorable mer-
chants who had been handling our seeds exclusively for years. Therefore we announced that—

Hereafter we will sell Burpee's
Seeds ONLY in sealed packages.

Packets and ounces, in Water-tight Manila Bags , are sealed, and bear,
plainly printed, either our Name or Registered Trade=mark Monogram,
protected by United States Letters Patent. Quarter-pounds, pounds, pints, and
quarts, in paper bags, have pasted across the top a green label, as below :

(ili)

Burpees Seeds that Grow

“The Seal of Quality ”

FOR 1914— “BEST BY TEST”

Genuine, — if this Seal is Unbroken

Facsimile of our well=known “Green Seal.”

SEEDS IN BULK,— that is. Peas, Beans, etc., by tbe peck or bushel, and quantities of
small seeds in bags, will have each sack sealed with our Trade Mark on a leaden seal.

This plan will be a protection to honest merchants from competition with other seeds falsely
claimed to be BURPEE’S SEEDS, and at the same time will be a guarantee to the purchaser.

LARGE DEALERS WHO SELL ON THEIR OWN REPUTATION
CAN BUY SEEDS IN BULK FROM US, AS HERETOFORE.

While every sack is sealed, the contents can be handled as desired. — except that

they must not be sold as BURPEE’S SEEDS, unless in original packages.

The Office at Fordhook Farms,— where Records of Trials and Crops are kept.

This little two-story building (nearly concealed by trees) was the original “farmhouse” at Fordhook. It
was built about one hundred and thirty years ago, — long before we entered the seed business (!), — and
when farmers and gardeners thought that they must save their own seeds, to be sure of purity! At that time
there was not a single seedsman, in anything like the modern sense, in America and but few in Europe. The
Seed Trade is of “modern evolution,” and it is acknowledged that nowhere has more been done to inspire
confidence in “bought seeds” than at Fordhook Farms, — so famous as the largest trial grounds in America.

The Greenhouses at Fordhook. In these greenhouses and adjoining frames samples of every lot. of seeds
are tested for vitality. Young plants of certain vegetables and flowers are also started for setting out in the fields.
We do not grow plants for sale, as we are Specialists in Seeds.

Burpee’s Seeds are “Seeds of Success.”

The purchaser of Burpee’s Seeds does not buy twenty cents’ worth of risk with
five cents’ worth of seeds, — the Trial Grounds enable us to fill packets with seeds only.
Every truck-patch or flower-bed, large or small, is the planter’s “ trial ground.”
We desire that our seeds and not your patience shall be tried there.

Fordhook Farms (and Sunnybrook) render our desire attainable.

Burpee’s Seeds are “Seeds that Grow.”

The purchaser of Buepee’s Seeds does not buy twenty cents’ worth of risk
with five cents’ worth of seed, — the Trial Grounds enable us to fill packets with
seeds only.

Every truck-patch or flower-bed, large or small, is the planter’s ‘ ‘ trial ground. ”
We desire that our seeds and not your patience shall be tried there.

Fordhook Farms (and Sunnybrook) render our desire attainable.

Burpee’s Seeds Grow!

Lower Prices cou^ eas*ly be quoted were we not practi-
cal growers and testers of seeds ourselves.

Were we willing to take simply the “say-so” of other growers in America
and Europe, without proving the stocks in greenhouses, frames, and open
field trials, we should save thousands of dollars annually. In that case,
however, we would never have succeeded in building up and maintain-
ing,— in spite of close competition, — a business that is acknowledged to be
the largest direct mail-order seed trade in the world.

New Golden Self-Blanching Celery.

This variety, first introduced in America by us in 1884, is decidedly
better in quality than the White Plume. It is ready for use nearly as
early, blanches as easily, and is larger in size as well as finer in quality. g( Wlr? jjS
It is of dwarf compact habit, with thick, solid, heavily ribbed stalks
which blanch easily to a clear waxen yellow. The stalks are crisp and
solid, free from stringiness and of delicious flavor.

The Value of a Guarantee is not in what is said, but who says it.

For thirty-seven years we have stated plainly that, where failure is caused by any fault of the
seed, we would refund the full price paid. This should convince even new customers that we
have confidence both in the quality of Burpee’s Seeds and in the great care exercised in their
growing, cleaning, and packing. No honest seedsman could assume responsibility for more than
the price actually paid by the purchaser.

About LETTUCE Seed.

Practically all the lettuce seed sold in America
is raised in California, but, unfortunately, the
demand for “cheap” seed has compelled a number of growers to produce seed from plants grown
so closely together that they have no opportunity to form well-developed heads; nor can these
crops be properly “rogued.” Such seed is not to be compared with BURPEE’S !

The Burpee-Quality in Melons.

An Unequaled Record Made in the Past Thirty-Seven Years.

Ever since we began business in 1876 we have been greatly interested in
growing melons for seed and have done much to improve existing varieties
of both musk melons and watermelons. Besides extensive field crops for
seed, we have fruited in our New Jersey trial grounds as many as one hundred
and forty varieties of melons unknown to commerce in a single season.
While most of these, particularly those of foreign origin, have proved to be of
no real value, yet, with such extensive and repeated trials, it is not surprising
that we have introduced eighteen of the Best and Most Popular
Melons now in cultivation. This record is unapproached in the history of
any other seed house.

Below is a list of varieties, — both Musk Melons and Watermelons, —
now in commerce which were first introduced by us. The figures before

the name signify, of course, the catalog number; the figures in black-face type after the name,
the year of introduction.

Ford hook Melon m0St vigorous growth, very early and

extremely prolific. The fruits are ready
for market fully as early as the green-fleshed Early Jenny Lind. The vines
grow vigorously and each vine sets from five to nine melons closely
around the stem ; frequently the fruits touch one another. The melons are
remarkably even in size, weighing from 1 lb. 8 ozs. to two pounds each.

The cost of the very Best Seeds is so small, compared with value

of the resulting crops, that sensible planters know they cannot afford to risk seeds
of doubtful pedigree, — and we know just as well that we cannot afford to risk our
hard-earned reputation by selling stocks of uncertain character.

Fordhook Farms (and Sunnybrook) render our desire attainable.

five hubbard squashes, — weighing 162 pounds, — engraved from a Photograph.

Growii by W. A. Wadsworth, R. F. D. 2, Canandaigua, N. Y., from Burpee's Seed of the original Hubbard.

The Best Tomato Seed produced in America to-day is

grown at rordhook and bunny-
brook Farms and by our private growers in Bucks County, Penna., and
in New Jersey, subject also to our personal supervision.

This is a strong statement, but complete trials — repeated every sea-
son— at Fordhook, together with inspection of methods pursued by other
careful growers, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, leave no doubt in our
minds as to its absolute truth, — certainly concerning the special strains
for which our house has so long been famous. Many extensive planters
write us that they cannot obtain Tomato seed anywhere else, at any price,
that is quite equal to Burpee’s Fordhook- or Sunn yb rook-Grown.
If you are in doubt, test some of our special strains alongside any other
seed you are accustomed to use. We are willing to abide by the result of
such comparative trials!

39

Burpee’s Selected Seed of TOMATOES.

Twelve of the Best Tomatoes, — first introduced or im-
proved by “The House of Burpee,” — and of which
Fordhook and Sunnybrook Strains of Seed are Unequaled!

Burpee’s Matchless (1889).
Turner Hybrid (1886).
Trucker’s Favorite (1893).
Fordhook First (1894).
Fordhook Fancy (1898).
Burbank’s Preserving (1898).

Golden Dwarf Champion (1898).
Burpee’s Quarter-Century (1900).
Chalk’s Early Jewel (1903).

Burpee’s Earliest Pink (1906).
Sunnybrook Special Earliana (1907).
Burpee’s Dwarf-Giant (1909).

Search every Seed Catalog published and you will not find any other twelve Tomatoes of
similar types that can take the place of these popular Burpee-Standards. Buy wherever you
may, — plant side by side, — and we think you will come to the conclusion that Burpee’s Tomato
Seed as grown upon our Pennsylvania and New Jersey farms is really unequaled l This applies
not only to the above twelve but is true also of several other varieties, upon which we likewise
“ specialize.” Most seedsmen charge less for Tomato seed than do we, — but the seed is
usually worth correspondingly less. What does the cost actually matter when you consider that
it requires only two ounces of seed to produce sufficient plants to set out an acre ?

The Value of a Guarantee is not in what is said, but who says it.

For thirty-seven years we have stated plainly that, where failure is caused by
any fault of the seed, we would refund the full price paid. This should convince
even new customers that we have confidence both in the quality of Burpee’s Seeds
and in the great care exercised in their growing, cleaning, and packing. No honest
seedsman could assume responsibility for more than the price actually paid by the
purchaser.

Many seedsmen have much to say about tested seeds, but unfor-
tunately with most dealers this applies only to blotter tests for vitality.
Our tests for vitality are soil tests. While necessary that seeds grow, it is
of prime importance that they shall be of choicest selected strains, such
as can be relied upon to produce products “true to type.” This can be
learned only by thorough field trials. No other seedsmen in America

famous Fordhook, Floradale and Sunnybrook Farms.

Burpee’s Four of the Finest” for 1914

Grand New Spencer Sweet Peas.

KinfJ (Burpee’s). Too much cannot be said in praise of this unique new

ivlllg W line Spencer. It has all the first-class qualities which go to form Sweet

Pea perfection. It is remarkable for the “ glistening immaculate purity of the whiteness ” and the
perfect finish of the flower. While of truly gigantic proportions the flowers are most exquisitely
finished in every detail. King White has such marvelous substance, — which might almost be
termed “leathery,” — that it is entirely free from the objectionable reflexing habit so generally
found in the standard of other whites. The grand flowers are borne almost invariably in
“fours” upon stout stems of great length. The bold, widely expanded standard is waved
exquisitely, while the wings, also well waved, are beautifully placed. The plants are excep-
tionally vigorous in growth with distinctive rich green foliage, and wonderfully profuse in
bloom for a long season. King White received an Award of Merit from The National
Sweet Pea Society of England, July, 1912, after having been grown in their trials ; also
Award of Merit by The Royal Horticultural Society of England, July, 1913 ; Certificate
of Merit by The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, Philadelphia, June 26, 1913 ; and
Bronze Medal from The North Lonsdale Rose Society, Ulverston, England, July, 1913.

In  sealed  packets  containing  fifteen  seeds  each  : Per  pkt.  1 5 cts.;  $ 1 .00  per  dozen  pkts. ;
$7.00 per 1 00 pkts. In lots of 500 pkts. or more, $6.25 per 1 00 pkts. (Cable word, Rex. )
In  sealed  packets  containing  thirty  seeds  each  : Per  pkt.  25  cts.;  $2.00  per  dozen  pkts.;
$13.75 per 100 pkts. In lots of 500 pkts. or more, $12.50 per 100 pkts. (Cable word,
King. )

1 1 llim 1 n 51 for (Burpee’s). It is almost impossible to adequately describe the beauty
lllUlillllclLUI an(^ surpassing grace of this unique novelty. In color it is perfectly dis-
tinct from all other varieties and has been pronounced the most glorious Sweet Pea ever seen. It
might be described as a rich glowing cerise-salmon, with an indication of bright orange suffusion
which marvelously scintillates and glistens under bright sunlight ; under artificial light the
flowers appear to be a glowing orange scarlet. Uniformly of large size and great substance.
The flowers are most perfectly formed, and well placed on long stout stems, frequently in
“fours.” Of vigorous growth, the vines carry a rich profusion of bloom. We were awarded a
Certificate of Merit for Illuminator both by the American Sweet Pea Society at the great Boston
Show, July, 1913, and The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, Philadelphia, June 26, 1913.

In  sealed  packets  containing  twelve  seeds  each  : Per  pkt.  1 5 cts.;  $ 1 .00  per  dozen  pkts.;
$7.00 per 100 pkts. In lots of 500 packets or more, $6.25 per 100 pkts. (Cable word,
Shining.)

In sealed packets containing twenty-five seeds each : Per pkt. 25 cts.; $2.00 per dozen
pkts.; $13.75 per 100 pkts. In lots of 500 packets or more, $12.50 per 100 pkts.

(Cable word, Illuminator.)

WpHownnH (Burpee’s). This beautiful novelty is likely to become quite as popular
W CUgWUUU in the Sweet Pea world as the famous china is among connoisseurs.
Wedgwood is a unique shade of lovely light blue and completely eclipses such varieties as
Flora Norton Spencer, Princess Mary , Southcote Blue and Zephyr. The flowers, of good size and
substance, are well waved in both standard and wings ; they are borne almost uniformly in
four-flowered sprays upon long stout stems. Wedgwood is a color long sought for in Sweet
Peas and will be eagerly welcomed by all lovers of this beautiful annual. It was awarded a
Certificate of Merit by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society at the Philadelphia Sweet Pea
Show, June 26, 1913.

In  sealed  packets  containing  twelve  seeds  each  : Perpkt.  15  cts.;  $1.00  per  dozen  pkts.;
$7.00 per 100 pkts. In lots of 500 packets or more, $6.25 per 100 pkts. (Cable word,
China. )

In sealed packets containing twenty-five seeds each : Per pkt. 25 cts.; $2.00 per dozen

pkts.; $13.75 per 100 pkts. In lots of 500 packets or more, $12.50 per 100 pkts.

(Cable word, Wedgwood. )

Fmnracc Piirr^niV (Burpee’s). This beautiful novelty was awarded a Certificate
ILIIiprt/OO JLli^ClllC 0f Merit by the American Sweet Pea Society, June 29, 1911,
but owing to its shy seeding character we have not been able to introduce it until this season.
The color is a delicate tone of light gray, flaked with light lavender. A vase or bunch of
Empress Eugenie gives a most charming effect. The flowers are of large size, beautifully
waved and crimped. A vigorous grower and very free bloomer, throwing a large proportion of
four-flowered sprays.

In sealed packets containing fifteen seeds each: Per pkt. 15 cts.; $1.00 per dozen
pkts.; $7.00 per 100 pkts. In lots of 500 packets or more, $6.25 per 100 pkts. (Cable
word, Empress.)

In sealed packets containing thirty seeds each: Per pkt. 25 cts.; $2.00 per dozen

pkts.; $13.75 per 100 pkts. In lots of 500 packets or more, $12.50 per 100 pkts.

BURPEE'S FLOWER SEEDS

One-quarter pound furnished at pound rates, and, except where otherwise priced, one-
quarter ounce at ounce rates, where not less than sixty cents per ounce. Of the cheaper flower
seeds, not less than one-half ounce will be supplied at ounce rates. Not less than one ounce
will be supplied of varieties priced at 15 cts. or less per ounce.

These flower seeds are all of the finest strains of the best varieties, and are sure to give
satisfaction. While many are grown by ourselves at Fordhook, Floradale, and Sunny-
brook Farms, or by our private growers in America, all are tested thoroughly both for vitality
and purity. Those that are imported are obtained only from the best growers in Europe, whose
crops we have repeatedly inspected. The whole makes a collection unexcelled in uniform
excellence of quality and vastly superior to the commercial grades commonly sold.

XZ?5* As is well known, we are headquarters for Sweet Peas (see preceding pages), supply-
ing the most critical trade, both at home and abroad, with thousands of pounds annually.

We call your attention especially to our Nasturtium seed, which is grown for us
under careful supervision, and is of a quality much superior to the usual strains offered
to the trade. XZP^See page 56.

Burpee’s Fordhook Farms are the Largest
and Most Complete Trial Grounds in America

At FORDHOOK Farms (supplemented by our farms in California and New Jersey) all
seeds are tested, but we " hold fast only to that which is good ! n The field trials number fully
seven thousand, while more than fifteen thousand soil tests for vitality are made also every
year. The vitality can be proved easily before planting, but not even an " expert n examination
would reveal whether seeds are of a high-grade pedigree strain or the veriest rubbish.

The fact that more planters order direct from us, — year after year, — than from any other
firm in America shows that BURPEE’S "SEEDS THAT GROW" have been proved trustworthy.
A mistake may occasionally occur, however, while success depends largely upon conditions
of soil and climate, hence no honest seedsman could assume responsibility for more. Than
the price actually paid by the purchaser. For thirty-seven years we have stated plainly that,
should failure result from any fault of the
seed, we would promptly refund the price
paid. This ought to convince even new
customers that we have confidence both in
the quality of BURPEE'S SEEDS and in the
safeguards with which we surround their
growing, cleaning, and packing.

At no other farms in America is there
expended so much time and money each
season in "proving stocks," while at no other
warehouse is greater care exercised in hand-
ling seeds. Planters who may visit Philadelphia
are invited to inspect the BURPEE BUILDINGS,
where we shall be pleased to explain the
workings of the various departments. We
have nothing to conceal, and are glad, also,
to have customers examine the crops and
trials duripg the season at our FORDHOOK,

SUNNYBROOK and FLORADALE FARMS. Another Entrance to FORDHOOK FARMS.
