The Productive Garden
Much suffering in foreign countries has been relieved through the productiveness of the AMERI-
CAN GARDEN and it is not too late for you to “do your bit” by making your 1919 garden more pro-
ductive. The more productive your garden, the more it offsets the high cost of living.
We have accomplished much in making your garden more productive by centering our efforts on
growing and offering only those varieties showing quality and productiveness, therefore we don’t of-
fer the long list of varieties seen in some catalogues, but you can rely on the productiveness of any
varieties we offer. You will find our claims modest and not startling, nevertheless we have
varieties and special strains that will make your garden more productive.
Let us hear from you with a list of your requirements, when we will quote any special prices
desired and can fill your orders promptly. Payments may be sent by P. O. money order, draft or per-
sonal check, or stamps for smaller orders.
Hoping to hear from you this season, we are,
Faithfully yours,
MILLS SEED COMPANY.
The Money Saving Collection
We are offering you a collection this season that cannot be excelled by any other you will find
offered. It is all new, strong growing seed and these collections we put up fresh and send out as
orders for them come to our office. Your investment of the small amount charged for this collec-
tion will return to you many dollars for each penny invested. See list below:

BONVEXiETT’S GIANT — A new variety of quick developing, producing a supply
In the spring from one-year roots set the previous spring. They are large, of a
green color, very tender and uniform in size and considered one of the best varieties.
It is by far the best variety to grow and we have discarded all others but this and
the Palmetto. Bonveletts does not require you to wait 3 or 4 years before it is pro-
ductive. Plant one year roots this spring and have a producing asparagus bed next
spring.

ODD AND NEW VARIETIES FOR OUR CUSTOMERS TO TEST, SENT WITH ORDERS IF ASK-
ED FOR. You have no idea how many samples of odd and new varieties a seedman has sent him,
more than we can bother with, therefore we have conceived the idea to put out samples to our cus-
tomers of these un-named vegetable and flower seed. All customers ordering from our catalogue to
the amount of 50c or more can have some of these samples for the asking.

Real Bargains in New
Grown Selected Beet Seeds
Here is your best opportunity to get new grown selected beet seed at prices lower than list-
ed for a long time. The reason for this is that knowing there would be a big demand for beet
seed and the prices would be quoted high, as you will find them in many of the other catalogues, we
put out extra effort in growing a large crop, and as the season for growing was ideal, we had
an immense crop, which accounts for our giving you the advantage of very low prices. We only
produce the best varieties — you can make no mistake on any kinds we offer.
ASSORTMENT OP THREE EXTRA PINE BEETS.— These three as shown above will
make a fine assortment for your garden, giving you the extra early, medium early and
medium late.
ECLIPSE IS THE EAREIEST, perfectly smooth and round, with skin and flesh an in-
tense red, fine grained and one of the finest for the table or early market. Does not grow
to a large size.
EDMAND’S is called extra early, but grows to a larger size than Eclipse and will not
be ready for use as soon as Eclipse. The skin is dark red, but the flesh is purple of very
tender quality and very sweet. Grows to a good size without getting stringy and woody
and good for winter use. This variety is noted for its extreme dark red color when boiled.
LENTZ, also called Philadelphia Turnip is perhaps later than the others. Its flesh
has rings of dark and light red,

CRIMSON GLOBE — The largest growing fine

flesh and very smooth skin for a beet developing to a
large size. Has very small tops, which makes it a great
favorite with the gardeners as it sells on sight at the
markets. Our seed is grown from selected bulbs and
no better can be offered.

while its quality as a beet is
extra good, it is a quick grow-
ing variety and its very light
green tender leaves are the
best to be had for beet greens,
which are cooked as you would

MILLS ELECTRIC BEET.
For years the Electric beet has been ap-
preciated in every state as a reliable, quick
growing beet and while we have made no
special claims for our stock we have fur-
nished our customers, we will say at this
time, that you get ADDITIONAL VALUE IN
THE MILLS ELECTRIC. Like many other
standard sorts we grow, we have improved
it largely and would like you to compare the
results with other Electric beet seed. Our
stock will show smaller tops and more uni-
form color throughout the root than any other
we have tested in our trial grounds.
One trial will convince you that we have
stock of this beet far better than the ord-
inary.

Other Good Varieties of Beets
The following kinds are all worthy of any garden space and our stock is the best there is. Prices for
all the following kinds listed below:
EDMANDS — Deep red color, round in form, do not grow large and coarse.
EARLY MODEL — Slightly oblong in shape, but not a long stringy tap root. Develops very quickly and
can be marketed to the best advantage when quite small.
IMPROVED LONG RED' — Has a long root not over 2 inches through, dark in color throughout, very
tender and sweet and a fine keeper. Rather late in maturing.
DARK STINSON — Very dark in color, grows to medium size and a great favorite for pickling.
COLUMBIAN — One of the best second early kinds. Grows to about 4 inches through, with very
smooth skin for a large beet.
EGYPTIAN — Does not grow to a large size and very round, with very small tap root. A favorite for
pickling whole on account of their small size.
DETROIT DARK RED — Unequalled as a big cropper in all the Western States. Has a decided turnip
shape, with small tops and fine for bunching. Skin dark red, flesh bright red.
PRICES' — Any of the above 7 varieties. Packet 5c, 3 pkts. 12c, *4-lb. 35c, lb. 1.20, postpaid.
MILES RUST PROOF BLACK WAX BEAN.
Do not compare this in thought with the ord-
inary black wax bean, as we have specialized on
this black wax for years and have a black wax
that in flavor and growing habits is far super-
ior to others of the black wax kinds. The plant
grows strong and carries its weight of pods
well off the ground. The foliage of the plant is
ample to protect the pods and for that reason
should be planted 10 inches in a row where oth-
ers are planted from 4 to 6 inches.
It has a beautiful pale yellow pod, slightly
curved and continues to bear from the first pick-
ing until very late. If you prefer a black wax,
we are sure you have not had the best until you
have had this improved stock.
Packet 8c, 3 pkts. 20c, *4 -lb. 35c, lb. 60c, postpaid.
By express or freight, not prepaid, lb. 35c.
NOTE — Beans, peas and such seed as has
been sold by the pint and quart measure in the
past, cannot be sold by measure in the future,
as the law does not allow it. They have to be
sold by the pound and fraction thereof. As a
rule you can figure on one pound of beans will
about equal one pint. The Lima beans being
lighter, one pound would be considerably over
one pint.
RUST PROOP BLACK WAX
IMPROVED GOLDEN WAX.
Whatever can be said of any other wax bean, the IM-
PROVED GOLDEN IS STILL ONE OF THE BEST. Per-
haps no other bean has had as much prominence as this va-
riety and we have stock that is perfect in every way. It is
strong growing stock and no garden is complete without
it as there is no better pickling bean than this kind, and it is
beyond faults when used as a snap bean. The pods will
keep in perfect condition for a long time after picking. The
true stock shows a white bean marked about the eye with
brownish markings and good for any use, even as a winter
shell bean. There will be a brisk demand for good golden
wax stock this season and you should be sure to get your
order in early to save disappointment. Our stock of this
bean seed is hand picked and therefore only perfect seed
goes out to our customers, all being perfectly developed. Our
stock of this variety is not large and would urge your placing
your order early as we handle nothing but our own selected
stock.

MILLS GIANT STRINGLESS
GREEN POD.
In a green pod bush bean of large
size, this is absolutely the best you
can get. We have grown it on our
own grounds for years, with the de-
mand increasing each year. It is very
tender, not only the first picking of
pods, but those that develop to a
good size and the last picking is as
good as the first. When the beans
have become quite hard in the pod
they can be cut up and cooked
with as much or more satisfaction
than any other bean we could men-
tion. The plant is very sturdy and
it is a fine cropper.
Packet 10c, 3 pkts. 25c, %-Ib. 35c,
lb. 55c, postpaid.
Express, not prepaid, at 35c per
pound.
MILLS BOUNTIFUL GREEN POD
(see cut below) — This is truly the
Biggest Yielding Green Pod Bush
that we have had. It is very meaty,
as you will will note from the illus-
tration and all pods are so uniform
in length and so well filled out that
it cannot be surpassed as a fat-podded green pod bean. Its flavor is excellent and
if you desire a round podded bean we are sure this will fill your requirements.
Packet 10c, 3 pkts. 25c, yz lb. 30c, lb. 50c, postpaid. Express, not prepaid, 30c lb.
IMPROVED NAVY OR SOUP BEAN — We are sure this improved strain is the
best soup bean to grow for winter use. Some stock offered and sold is very
small in size and disappointing in not maturing, but you always meet with Good
Success With the Improved Navy. It is always well to give a little space to this
bean and have a winter supply of soup beans at small cost. Our stock is first
class in every way and the price reasonable for reliable stock.
Packet 8c, 3 pkts. 20c, yz-Vo. 25c, lb. 40c postpaid. Write for prices on larger
quantities.
EARLY LONG YELLOW SIX WEEKS— This is a
very good green pod of light yellow color, noted for
its hardiness and adaptability to poor soils, where
other beans would be a failure or light crop. It is
very productive but not as tender in its later stage,
therefore should be used when rather young. With-
stands drought to a remarkable degree and therefore
used in sections w'here drought might be expected,
with better success than any other bean.
Price same as Bountiful Green Pod.
Pole Beans
KENTUCKY WONDER WAX POLE— A remarka-
ble pole bean, pods averaging seven inches in length,
filled out so full as to be curved and very meaty. The
plants keep producing beans until frost and a won-
derfully good shell bean after the pods have become
well filled. The plants with the long and fat pods
are very showy and a great favorite.
Packet 10c, 3 pkts. 25c, yz lb. 30c, lb. 50c, postpaid.
Express, not prepaid at 30c per pound.
KENTUCKY WONDER GREEN POD OR OLD
HOMESTEAD — The old favorite green pod pole bean
that everyone knows as the big yielder, from which
pickings can be made continuously until frost in the
fall. It is fine flavored and a mighty profitable
crop for all gardeners and also for the home garden.
I ^ ill III When a green pod pole bean is considered this is
H £m\\ lli the one to select.
Packet 8c, 3 pkts. 20c, *4-lb. 30c, lb. 50c, postpaid.

HORTICULTURAL POLE (Cranberry or Wren’s
Egg) — A pole bean very well adapted for short sea-
sons or cool locations. The beans and pods have pe-
culiar markings of pink and red, is of good quality
and largely used as a winter shell bean.
Packet 8c, 3 pkts. 20c, yz lb. 30c, lb. 45c, postpaid.
Express, not prenaid at 35c per pound.
HENDERSON BUSH LIMA— The smallest but fin-
est quality lima bean grown. The pods are about
2 y2 inches in length and hold four beans. It pro-
duces big crops in all locations and on any soil. It
is such a heavy yielder that the crop of dried beans
is larger- than with many other larger types. When
cooked they have a finer flavor than other limas.

MILLS EARLIEST FLAT
READ CABBAGE. See photo
illustration front cover. Our ex-
clusive strain of this early flat-
head is the largest of the early
flatheads and the heads weigh
from 10 to 12 pounds after the
slight trimming necessary to
have them ready for market.
The thick flatheads are remark-
ably solid and grow very free
from spreading leaves and it
has the record that not less
than 800 more heads can be
grown to the acre than some
of the spreading flatheads, as
they can be set quite close to-
gether. It is a quick growing
with unusually tight folding leaves on account of the
ribs not being as prominent and protruding. Its quality is
A No. 1 and in every particular the best early fine grained
cabbage for profit to the grower that we have ever known.
Packet 10c, 3 pkts. 25c, ounce 30c, V4 lb- $1-00, postpaid.
ALLHEAD EARLY— An early flathead that has been a fav-
1; orite for a long time and still to be recommended. It does
ALLHEAD EARLY CABBAGE not weigh out as heavy as MILLS EARLIEST FLATHEAD,
the heads dressing to about 6 and 8 pounds and is of fine quality.
Packet 10c, 3 pkts. 25c, ounce 30c, postpaid.
EARLY WINNINGSTADT — As shown by the illustration the head is very pointed and about the same size
as the Wakefield, the leaves are tightly folded and of a rich dark green color and the heads form very solid.
It has been a great favorite with out customers, especially for kraut making. Tt wel1 planted early
and also a good variety for planting in the summer for win-
ter use.
Packet 10c, 3 pkts. 25c, ounce 40c, postpaid.
MILLS WORLD-BEATER or AUTUMN KING.— When It
comes to considering the best late flathead cabbage the an-
swer is WORLD-BEATER or AUTUMN KING. We believe
we have sold more of this kind than any other of the late
cabbages. It is always sure to make a good even stand of solid
heads. The plants are of extra strong growth with dark blu-
ish-green leaves, flat, and produce heads of enormous size.
While they require a longer season for growing, they more
than make up in weight than those that would mature a
little earlier. Seed sown June 1st will produce fine heads in
time for winter storage.
Packet 12c, 3 pkts. 30c.
EARLY JERSEY WAKEFIELD— -The heads are pointed
but not as sharp pointed as Winningstadt. It is a well known
early variety and for a quick growing, good quality cabbage
is to be highly recommended.
Packet 15c, 3 pkts. 40c, ounce 50c, postpaid.
CHINESE CABBAGE or PE TSAI— Also called Celery Cab-
bage and introduced into this country through the Chinese
of the Pacific coast. Is the cabbage for the small gardens as
they are set as close as 8 or 10 inches apart. The heads grow
tall and fold together like celery, the center of which is very
tender and mild in flavor.

MILLS FIRST OF ALL SWEET CORN — This is our own special strain and the earliest known Sweet Corn.
We have had reports from customers from various points advising that this corn has matured good market-
able ears in from 65 to 70 days. It is not only early but the best quality of small eared corn you will find,
deliciously sweet and tender and we have always kept it well bred up so that the grains grow straight on the
cob and therefore is the most perfect formed ears of the small types. The ears average gix inches in length
and always well filled at butt and tip, with a very small cob. Our truck growing customers advise ns they
have found it the most profitable early corn they have ever heard
of. It is more dwarf in growth than the standardd Early Corn
variety as two and three good ears are found on a stalk. Many of
the most reliable gardeners advise us that they are first to
market with sweet corn in their section when they grow Mills
First of All. We have also had hundreds of good words from
those growing it in the home garden. To have absolutely the ear-
liest sweet corn you will have to have Mills First of All.
Packet 5c, 3 pkts. 12c, y2 lb. 25c, lb. 40c, postpaid.
Express, not prepaid, per pound, 20c.
COUNTRY GENTLEMAN — We grew a fine stock of this val-
uable and delicious sweet corn, preferred by some to be called
honey corn and shoe peg corn. The grains of our strain are un-
usually deep and closely set and can truly be said to be a solid
ear of sweetness. The ears average 8 and 9 inches in length, with
the grains irregular on the cob and can prove to any one that we
have the finest stock produced of this excellent sweet corn.
Packet 5c, 3 pkts. 12c, y2 lb. 25c, lb. 40c, postpaid.

GOLDEN BANTAM, the National Sweet Com — This variety
is worthy of all the praise that has been given it through the
magazines and seed catalogues. A variety that succeeds every-
where, even in the Northern gardens. The grains are rather
large and a fine sort for eating from the cob, the grains being
very deep and naturally a very small cob. We have pure stock,
carefully selected, and no better can be obtained.
Packet 5c, 3 pkts. 12c, y2-lb. 25c, lb. 40c, postpaid.

STOWELL’S EVERGREEN — The standard main crop late va-
riety, strong and vigorous, 7 to 8 feet high, ears 9 inches long,
f usually of 16 rows of fine sugary grains. Has a reputation for
productiveness, rich, sweet flavor and deep, tender grains.

OREGON EVERGREEN, Superior to all others — retains its
delicate tenderness even when a little old— has succeeded when
others failed — If you have not had Oregon Evergreen you have
not had the best sweet corn. The kernels are of good size, very
tender and of good depth, filled to the bursting point with milky Golden Bantam
sweetness — and its superior flavor and sweetness is retained long-
er after it is picked than with any other variety, for the reason
that this corn has the heaviest husk of any sweet corn known,
and this valuable feature allows the corn to be shipped many
miles to market and arrive in perfect condition. This heavy husk
has another valuable point, and this is that the worms will eat up
other kinds of sweet corn while they will not be found on this
corn. This is a feature that all have been highly pleased with.
Oregon Evergreen has a very small cob and the ears are always
rounded up with grains at the tip and butt. It is what might
be called a mid-season sweet corn, and in this section it will fur-
nish good roasting ears as late as September 10th. Pkt. 5c, 3, 12c.

popping it is superior to all other kinds. Ears from 2 to 2%

is a brisk demand for this pop corn among pop corn merchants,

LETTUCE
MILLS EARLY PRIZE HEAD LETTUCE— A
delicious First Early Head Lettuce — A rather
small head lettuce, perfect in quality. The plant
is small and they may be planted close to each
other and is very hardy, so that it may be plant-
ed early and later planting can be made in
August, as it does not succeed as well as some
others in hot weather. It has been sown in
September and carried over the winter in cold
frames, when it gives a valuable crop in April.
Packet 8c, 3 pkts. 20c, oz. 25c, y^ lb 65c.
GRAND RAPIDS LETTUCE — The great Lettuce for forcing or growing
Outside. The Easiest of all to grow. We believe this is the best loose
leaf variety there is and it is the easiest kind to grow. It produces an
abundant crop of pale green leaves, slightly crumpled, which retain their
sweet flavor even after it has become quite old. It is very brittle, and
in this respect it leads all other loose leaf kinds. It is extremely popu-
lar in the Middle West and really should be popular everywhere. As you
will note from the photo reproduction it has quite a long stem, and on
this account it very seldom rots in damp weather. For forcing we would
recommend it above all others. Our seed is from carefully selected stock
Grand Rapids Lettuo*
and we are sure it will give satisfaction. Packet 6c, 3 pkts. 15c, ounce 20c, V4 lb. 60c, postpaid.
BLACK SEEDED SIMPSON — The Most Attractive Hight Green Lettuce — Extremely Tender. One of the
most reliable varieties, growing well during the hot summer when most others are failures, therefore most
satisfactory and popular for home use, but also largelly grown for the market, especially in the western states.
It is a good shipper and it does equally well out-doors as in a greenhouse. Very early, slow to go to seed,
with broad crumpled leaves of very light green color, tender and sweet.
Packet 6c, 3 pkts. 15c, oz. 20c, lb. 55c, postpaid.
BIG BOSTON— A Head Lettuce Praised by
All Users — Claimed by Many to be the Best
Head Lettuce. Some growers seem to have
better success with the Big Boston, therefore
we believe it is the difference in the locations, 1
but we find that the Big Boston takes the lead
in many places and some claim it is absolute-
ly the best. We strongly advise all to try
the Big Boston, for we are sure it has made
a wonderful hit with many of our customers
and you will not want any other after you have
tried it. In appearance it cannot be excelled
has a rich buttery flavor not found in all
and also in quality it is unsurpassed, as it
lettuces. One very decided advantage over oth-
er kinds is that Big Boston is peculiarly adapt-
ed for late Fall culture.

tuce in cultivation. Notwithstanding its
great size it is tender, sweet and crisp. It
produces a fine large, solid head, often 3
feet in circumference and 12 inches in diam-
eter. It is a great heat resister, being slow
to run to seed, so that it is very reliable
for late crop when other sorts are unfit for
use. Especially adapted to planting in the
fall.

bright yellow color somewhat russeted. For sweet pickles,
pies or preserving they are splendid and can be used in many
ways. Pkt. 5c, 3 pkts. 12c, ounce 20c postpaid.

double the size of any other variety; of a dark purple with green

husk on is a splendid keeper if kept in a cool place. Pkt. 6o, 3, 12o.
MAMMOTH PEANUTS — Peanuts can be grown in any section
that grows corn, and their culture is very simple and interesting.
The MAMMOTH is the best yielder and not of the running kind,
the nuts growing in a compact manner about the hill. If planted
in April they ripen in September as far north as Canada. The
plant is very attractive, the leaves being of odd shape and a
handsome green shade, tinted with white. Large pkt. 10c, V6 lb-

WATERMELONS
SWEETHEART — “The Sweetest of the Sweet” —
Whatever may be claimed for various “sweetest in the
world water melons" there is none sweeter than the
true SWEETHEART. It is without the slightest doubt
the best home garden melon, mostly on account of its
delicate sweet flavor and convenient size. It has thin
rind and cannot be said to be a shipping melon. We
have true stock saved from only perfect melons.
Packet 5c, 3 pkts. 12c, oz. 15c, % lb. 45c, postpaid.
TOM WATSON— This variety took the lead over other
market melons so completely that it is now the univer-
sal market water melon, one that can be shipped a
long distance on account of its thick tough rind. Its
meat is the extreme in sweetness and good flavor, also
good color as its rind is the extreme in toughness.
These are two qualities combined that make it indis-
pensible to the grower, if he is to compete with the
market. Seed only from best specimens.
Packet 5c, 3 pkts. 12c, oz. 15c, lb* 40c, y2 lb. 70c,
postpaid.
We specialize on this famous melon and grew a large
stock of seed. Write for quantity prices.
MILES EARLIEST — “A Favorite With
Northern Customers" — This melon has made a
great record for us in all melon growing sec-
tions for its early maturing record. It is the
standard of fine quality and a favorite with
the Northern customers. It is very tender
and we do not claim it to be a shipping melon,
but its very dark red flesh is its main at-
traction. Is very sweet and crisp and the
vines are very productive of perfect fruits.
Packet 5c, 3 pkts. 12c, oz. 15c, ^4 lb. 45c,
yz lb. 75c, postpaid.
KLECKLEY SWEETS, “One of the Sweet-
est"— A fine water melon for home use or
nearby market as it is too tender to stand
shipping. Recommended highly for the home
garden as the melons properly matured are
good eating to the extreme outside rind.

yz lb. 70c, postpaid.
WONDERFUL SUGAR — “A Large Shipping

Choice Onion Seed
The onion seed crop fell short of expectations
at the harvest. With this shortage and the high
cost of labor we have been obliged to advance
our price on onion seed, as all other seed-
men have. What stock we have is very plump,
strong vitality seed and worth all we ask
for it.
OUE FAMOUS FBIZETAXEB ONION — It
develops full size the first season from seed.
Specimens grown to weigh over four pounds.
Has yielded 600 bu. to the acre. Is an ex-
cellent keeper through the winter — This is the
same type as those immense imported onion?
seen on sale in fruit stores that command
a high price. A highly profitable onion to
grow, and succeeds in all parts of the U. S
Our stock always produces a round form with
a very small neck that almost disappears when
the bulbs have ripened, and a most attrac-
tive light straw colored skin with pure white
sparkling flesh of excellent quality and very
nild. We have handled many specimens weigh-
ing over 4 pounds. There is an ever increas-
ing demand for this onion on the market, and
there is no doubt whatever that the crop will
always bring a big profit.

MILLS YELLOW GLOBE DANVERS — Om
Special Strain and a Very Profitable Crop to
Grow. Our special strain of this valuable
onion will produce bulbs that are globular in FBIZETAKEB
shape, not flattened. We prefer the round form and it will be found to dry down at the top until the tops
almost entirely disappear, leaving a perfectly round onion that Is very solid, of a light straw color, with
thin skin and pure white flesh. It is very mild yet full flavored and excellent for slicing, and a fine
keeper. For production it will equal the Prlzetaker or the Wethersfield, but will not grow to the extra
large size of the Prizetaker. Some markets require a medium sized straw colored onion, and for such markets
this is the best that can be had.
Fkt. 10c, 3 pkts. 25c, ounce 35c, 14 lb. $1.25, ^ lb $2.25, lb. $4.25, postpaid. Express, not prepaid, per

LARGE RED WETHERSFIELD — Carefully Selected Seed of Our Own Strain of This Wonderfully Popular
Onion. We have a small-necked strain that is sure to ripen, flattened in form like the specimen shown
and we have supplied some of the most careful onion seed buyers with this strain and have held their trade
for a long time. Seed that we have produces stock that is very free from stiff-necks or scullions. The outer
skin is an attractive deep purplish red, smooth and glossy, and the flesh white, slightly tinged with light
red and will produce large bulbs from seed the
same season planted. As is generally known
it is a fine keeping onion, and the very best in
the flat red kinds to grow for profit or home use.

size and growth to the Southport red in all re-
spects but color. The Southport White has a pa-
per white skin, and a pure white, mild and crisp
flesh of fine grain and excellent size bulbs.

LARGE RED WETHERSFIELD
SOUTHFORT RED— An ex-
cellent keeper. The best med-
ium-sized Red Onion to grow
to bring a big crop — The South-
port red is an onion that we
prize very highly, as it pro-
duces bulbs so uniform in size
that we have seen fields grow a
stock that hardly needed any
grading, all the onions being
about the same size. It is a
bright red in color, the flesh
white, with the exception of a
little red at the outside near
the skin. They grow to a size
that commands the best price,
and are excellent keepers thru
the winter. They will run in
size from 2% to 3 Inches, of a
good flavor, and have seen them
yield as many as 600 bushels
to the acre, while we have
heard of 800 bushel yields on

MILLS EARLY SIX WEEKS — “The Earliest Potato in Existence.” — Customers have asked why we do
not list the Mills Early Six Weeks Potato in our catalogue any more. The reason is that we could hardly

for it. We now have a larger stock than for some years, but let us advise that you place your order early
for the Mills Early Six Weeks Potato, or you might be disappointed. Those that place orders up to March

HA VS YOU EVEB NOTICED that some seedsmen come out each year with two and three new tomatoes
and keep up this rate year after year. How do they do it.
The Mills Early July and Mills Mammoth Prize are the only new ones we have been able to produce in
about eighteen years of selecting* and popagating. We have been specializing on these two for some over
10 years and it keeps us busy raising seed stock to supply the demand. We are proud of these two toma-
toes of our introduction and a trial will convince you that we are justified in our pride
MILLS 2JAB.il If JULY— A won-
derful cluster tomato — a very

many as eight tomatoes of the
same size in a cluster, all fruits
of a cluster ripening at the
same time. The fruit has a
bright red color, smooth in
form and of excellent flavor.

SALFIGLOSSIS
SALFIGLOSSIS (Velvet
Flower) — This is the favorite
flower of many flower lovers
and it may be justly considered
as such. As you will note by
the illustration it is a bell
shaped flower, and the most
beautiful part of it is the mark-
ings and veining from the
throat of the flower to the out-
er edge of the petals. They run
in colors from light yellow
through darker shades of
brown, bronze, copper, old gold
and many odd colors that have
to be seen to be appreciated.
Furthermore the blooms with
long stems keep remarkably
well when cut and placed in
water. It might be called the
most beautiful flower of easy
culture to be had.
Packet 8c, 3 pkts 20c.
POPULAR MIXTURE — -We offer here a mixture of sweet peas
as very low prices, considering the cost of growing sweet peas
the past season for seed purposes. It contains all the good kinds
as to size and the best colors, but of course is not made up of the
very finest sorts only, as we could not offer them for this price.
The mixture as offered on the back cover of this catalogue con-
tains only the best spencer types, including many of the latest
development in new colors. We make the two mixtures, the
cheapest of which is sure to give satisfaction, giving you many
colors you had not seen heretofore, and the higher priced collec-

mand to describe colors and it is best not to attempt it. They
are like the poppies, absolutely easy to grow, do well in sunny
situations, one of the most valuable for edging or for massing
and excellent for cutting. Packet 6c, 3 pkts. 15c, Ys oz. 20c.
POPULAR MIXTURE SWEET PEAS
RESURRECTION PLANT — The Resurrection
Plant derives its name from the fact that when in
a dry and dormant state it does not appear to have
life, as its leaflets are tightly folded together as
shown in the greatly reduced engraving, but when
placed in water it begins to unfold and in a few
hours has developed into a spreading fern-like plant
with an attractive dark green color that is very beau-
tiful, which it retains as long as supplied with water
and will cover an 8 to 10 inch dish.
When taken from the water it folds together in
a dormant state. This operation of curling up when
dry and expanding when placed in water can be re-
peated indefinitely and therefore is an everlasting
plant.
In the purchase of this plant you procure a per-
manent decorative plant that never loses its charm,
and we are sure that every person securing one or
more would not part with them for many times
the purchase price. Plants in dormant state 8o each,
three for 20c.

SELECTED SEED CORN (Famous Iowa Grown)
We are the favored seed house this season as we are located in the
exact spot of the corn belt where the corn growing1 for seed purposes
was favored with every possible advantage in soil and climatic con-
ditions to make perfect seed. Many other sections did not produce the
sound well developed, fully matured seed corn that Washington Coun-
ty, Iowa, can boast of.
MORTGAGE LIFTER (medium early) — A heavy yielding corn that
we introduced several years ago which has always held its popularity
as its good points over other kinds are many. IT HAS DEPTH OP
GRAIN IN PROPORTION TO SIZE OP GRAIN, A STRONG STALK
TO STAND HARD WINDS, THE LARGEST SIZED EAR FOR MED-
IUM EARLY CORN AND A RICH DEEP GOLDEN YELLOW COLOR.
THE MOST SATISFACTORY AND SAFE CORN TO GROW. It is
nothing uncommon to see fields that yield 80 to 90 bushels to the acre.
To those that have not been “getting by” with a good FULLY MA-
TURED CORN CROP we can make their success certain by recom-
mending MORTGAGE LIFTER.
PRIDE OP THE NORTH (The 85-90-day com) — For the Northern
locations and for early feeding corn this is very valuable. The ears
are of fairly good size and dry out quickly. It makes a good crop in
Iowa and Illinois but is successful in Michigan, Minnesota, Wiscon-
sin, the Dakotas and such short season states. We have a nice stock
of this early maturing corn.
IOWA SILVER MINE — The best white corn to grow. Will produce
a big stand on ground and under conditions that would not be fav-
orable to the yellow dent kinds. Ears very large, usually a length
of from 12 to 15 inches, rows straight on the cob with ear well filled
out at butt and tip.
REID’S YELLOW DENT — A very fine prize winning corn, requir-
ing about 110 days to mature. It has a very fixed standard and if
your season is long enough it makes perhaps a stronger feeding value
than the other yellow varieties. The ear holds its shape well to the
PRIDE OP THE NORTH tip and a very attractive corn to grow.
PRICES OP ALL SEED CORN (Shelled and Carefully Graded)— By Mail

SPECIAL SEED CORN CIRCULAR: We have a special circular on
seed com and other farm seed that will be sent on request. IT ILLUS-
TRATES PULLY ALL THE KINDS OP SEED CORN WE HAVE, WITH
A VERY FULL DESCRIPTION and interesting to those wishing to con-
sider carefully the seed com proposition.
DWARP ESSEX RAPE — A forage plant of great merit that can be
produced in from six to eight weeks from seed, yielding from 25 to 30 tons
of green feed to the acre. The plants grow from two to four feet high,
having broad, rich, juicy leaves, resembling rutabaga tops. When corn
is grown to be cut for feed, it is well to sow rape at the last plowing,
as it will leave excellent pasture after the corn is taken off and is very
effective in keeping down the weeds. The seed should be used at the
rate of 3 lbs. to the acre in drills, or from 5 to 10 lbs. to the acre sown
broadcast.
Packet 5c, 3 pkts. 10c, lb. 40c, 3 lbs. $1.00, postpaid. By express or
freight, not prepaid, 5 lbs. $1.00.
TEOSINTE — It resembles corn somewhat but has a much broader leaf
and sweeter sap. It is a very rapid growing plant after it has attained a
height of 5 or 6 inches and grows to a height of 11 feet. It suckers more
than any other forage plant; often producing 25 to 30 stalks, and as many
as 7 5 stalks have been grown from one kernel of seed. It can be cut when
two or three feet high, after which it will rapidly grow up and as many
as four crops have been cut during the season. The amount of forage per
acre from this plant is something immense; in many cases from 250 to 300
tons. It should be planted in hills two feet apart each way, and three
pounds is sufficient for one acre.
Packet 5c, 3 pkts. 12c, oz. 20c, V4 lb. 60c, y2 lb. 85c, postpaid.
WHITE KAFFIR CORN — It grows four to five feet high, making a
straight, upright growth. It has a strong stem with enormous wide
leaves. The stalks keep green and are brittle, making excellent fodder,
either green or dried, which is highly relished by cattle and horses. For the
grain, sow in rows 3 feet apart, 3 to 5 pounds of seed to the acre. For
fodder sow one-half to one bushel, either broadcast or in drills.
1 lb. 20c, 3 lbs. 50c, postpaid. By freight or express, not prepaid, 10
lbs. 80c, 25 lbs. $1.50.
SUDAN GRASS, A New Forage Crop That is of Immense Value to
the Middle West and Southwest — The Department of Agriculture re-
ports that Sudan Grass will be of the greatest value in the central
states, and especially in the parts of Texas, Kansas, Nebraska and Colo-
•ado that are deficient in rainfall. These dry regions have no other
satisfactory hay crops and Sudan grass yields a good crop of first-class
hay. All stock relishes the hay and thrive on it. The quality is
said to be much superior to Millet and almost equal to Timothy hay.
Yields of from two to four tons per acre are very common, and under
irrigation the yield runs as high as eight to ten tons per acre. Sudan
Grass should not be sown until the soil has become warm, but can
be sown any time during the summer so long as 70 to 80 days inter-
vene before the date of the first expected frost. It can be sown in
rows 18 to 42 inches apart, or it can be drilled in with grain or sown
broadcast by hand. When cut for hay it should be cut just after full
bloom, so that it will have as much time as possible for a second
growth.
Packet 5c, 3 pkts. 12c, oz. 15c, V4 lb. 25c, y2 lb. 40c, lb. 70c, postpaid.

young canes continue to produce fruit in in-
creasing numbers until frost comes in the
fall.
The plants are of ironclad hardiness as

SELECT STRAWBERRIES
We specialize on growing fine strawberry plants and devote several acres to it. Plants you
get from us are grown under conditions to secure the strongest, hardiest and best fruit producing
plants possible to get. We offer you only varieties that are productive and valuable for home or
commercial growing.
We offer only “perfect” varieties (kinds that bear if set out by themselves, without requiring
to be pollenized.
Shipments are made in the spring as soon as the weather will permit of the plants being taken
from the ground and in good condition for shipping.
We offer some new varieties this season, found by us to be of great value and you will get
satisfaction, no matter what variety you may select.
WE GUARANTEE PLANTS TO REACH YOU IN GOOD CONDITION.
DR. BURRILL
DR. BURRIXiXi (New Variety) — This wonderful good new
strawberry was introduced two years ago and from the small
start we got of it are able to offer it for the first time this
season. It was originated by Dr. Reasoner of Illinois, who
originated the famous “Senator Dunlap” and in fact it is an
improved Senator Dunlap, which goes to say, that you
cannot be disappointed in it. Its foliage is large and of a
beautiful dark green, with the berries large, of beautiful
form with the surface of berry a rich deep glossy red with
rich and solid meat and more productive than the Dunlap
and many others. In flavor it is more mild than the Dunlap,
is the best canning variety known and a fine shipper. It
bears for a longer season than Dunlap and is an ideal straw-
berry for the home garden or market growing.
Price, 25 plants 50c, 50 plants 75c, 100 plants $1.25, postpaid.
COLLINS (New Variety) — This is a seedling from a Bed-
erwood plant and while it has the good qualities of the Bed-
erwood, it does not have the habit of being an excessive run-
ner that the Bederwood is, which is objectionable to us. The
plants make a good thick row and the foliage stands up well
and strong, free from rust or disease.
Its unusual feature is that the fruit stems are unusually
strong, holding the fruit up from the ground. The berries
are of a rich dark red color and always ripen out full, without
leaving a green tip. It is a midseason variety, beginning to
bear with the second earlies and continues well along with
the later sorts, every berry coming to perfection. It is a
very heavy cropper and are sure our customers will do well
to try out this variety.
Price, 25 plants 50c, 50 plants 75c, 100 plants $1.25, postpaid.
CHARLES I (New Variety) The Earliest of All — This
new valuable variety is the earliest of any we have ever
found, being one week ahead of many so-called early kinds.
It is a large yielder, a strong grower, berries large, very
regular in form and of fine color and quality. If the ear-
liest berry is the most important, you will do well with this
new variety, but would suggest early orders, as there is a big
demand and the supply of plants we have will possibly not
last through the season.

SENATOR
DUNLAP
This has been the
lea ding commercial
strawberry for many
years for the reason
that it does well eve-
rywhere and produces
enormous crops every
season. When setting
an acre or more of
strawberry plants we
recommend the Dun-
lap for the reason
that the acre will
probably produce
more than with any
other variety when it
is considered it is so
hardy and will pro-
duce a larger crop with the minimum labor and attention given
than any other kind.
It bears good sized evenly shaped berries of a beautiful
dark red color and its flavor is delicious. It is fine for pre-
serving, making a rich dark red syrup and is a first class
shipper, retaining its brightness long after being picked.
We have customers in every state in the Union order-
ing plants every season and have yet the first complaint
to receive. We have specialized on this variety and have
plants that cannot be excelled for purity and vigor.

The Most Promising1 of the New Strawberries
“Grand Marie”
We believe we are the introducers of this wonder-
fully fine variety. Two years ago we had only a few
of the plants given us by a friend of the originator,
who has made no effort to introduce it to the public
and we .gre the most fortunate to be the first to
have a supply of plants to offer.
We have fruited this berry two years and those
that have sampled it want no other than the “Grand
Marie” for it has the others surpassed in appear-
ance and quality. It is of large size, over one inch
in diameter, of a dark red color all through and never
hollow at the center, nor light in color as many kinds
are. Its flavor is absolutely the best we have found
in strawberries and a grower selling this fruit to
his customers will have a hard job on his hands if
he hands them strawberries of another variety after
they have been having the “Grand Marie.”
As for productiveness it will equal any of the
heaviest bearing varieties. The plants send out
quite a few runners, so that if you once get a start
of them you will have no trouble in having new
plants for starting new beds. We are specializing on
this extraordinary strawberry and every plant sent
out will give perfect satisfaction.
GIBSON — This is a mid-season variety that is coming to the front very fast. It commences to ripen with
the Senator Dunlap but owing to its great productiveness it continues to bear until 8 and 10 days after the
Dunlaps have gone, is therefore a good variety to grow in connection with the Dunlap.
JERSEY GIANT — The Largest Strawberry Grown — It is a novelty with some to want to grow the largest
strawberry and to those we offer the “JERSEY GIANT.” We have had them many times growing 2 inches
in diameter and they are of the best quality of any for a large sized berry.
THE BEST PALL BEARING STRAWBERRY
PROGRESSIVE — We recommend this variety as being far ahead of all other Fall bearing varieties in the
matter of productiveness. We picked forty-eight nice berries from one plant of the Progressive and it was
still loaded with green berries and blossoms. It is a wonder-
ful producer. We have seen a number of different young
plants with berries on them before they had taken root. The
plants are perfectly healthy, medium in size, and closely re-
sembles the Dunlap. The fruit is medium in size, bright red
in color and of excellent keeping qualities, making it valuable
as a long distance shipper. This variety will bear an enor-
mous amount of fruit in the spring of the second year, and a
fair crop the following fall. However, the best fall crop
is produced the first year, and we advise that you plant a
patch of them every year.
As most of the berries are produced on the mother plant,
we advise planting them not more than 12 inches apart in the
row and keeping all runners off. They will if treated in this
manner, produce an enormous amount of berries, and as they
sell for 25 to 40 cents per quart, you will receive excellent
returns for your labor.

MILLS IMPROVED ROC HI A (Shown on back cover.)
If you are interested in a good border plant to enclose your grounds, we especially direct you to
MILLS IMPROVED KOCHIA. It is an annual, easily grown from seed and can be grown so that they
make a solid border, to be trimmed on the top giving it a flat solid appearance, or grown as single spec-
imens, as shown by photo on back cover. The value of this plant is that when set from 9 to 12 Inches
apart they meet and form a solid wall, interlocking with each other and only require to be trimmed on top
as the sides are straight from top to bottom. It has a rich green color and turns scarlet late in the
season._ It is a drought resisting plant and no matter how severe the drought they always have a fresh
dark green color. Three packets of seed will make enough plants for enclosing large premises and they
always add a stately appearance to grounds enclosed or ornamented with these plants.

GIANT CRIMSON RHUBARB.
THE RHUBARB (FIE PLANT) THAT IS BETTER THAN THE ORDINARY RHUBARB— For some years
we have given considerable attention to this rhubarb and have a type that stands out by itself when quality
is considered.
It does not require peeling as the skin is thin and delicate and gives an attractive color to sauce made from
the plant, therefore you will find an advantage to have the GIANT CRIMSON. It
is one of the first vegetables in the spring and the most healthful and this kind
is ready for use whether the stalks are the size of a lead pencil or whether iy2
inches thick. Customers tell us it is worth its place in the garden as an orna-
mental plant aside from its fine cooking quality. It is the least expensive luxury
that the garden can furnish. Six plants will supply a large family and some of
the neighbors.
