Burpee-Quality Vegetable Seed

Tested and Proved at Fordhook Farms

The actual economy in paying a fair price for seeds of known quality and the reliability of
Burpee’s Seeds are two facts so well known as to require no demonstration.

Fordhook Farms, famous the world over as America’s largest and most complete Trial
Grounds, were established in order to test and prove the quality — the vitality and the
purity — of every lot of seed produced and sold by the House of Burpee. It is at Fordhook
Farms also that we carry on the selection and breeding work necessary to maintain and
improve our stocks, and try out new varieties of vegetables and flowers before offering
them to our customers. Burpee’s Sunnybrook Farms in southern New Jersey and Flora-
dale Farms in California produce many of the finest flower and vegetable seeds.

We exercise every possible care in the selection of stocks, and in the growing, harvesting,
and curing of Burpee’s Seeds. Our entire effort is devoted to the production and distribu-
tion of seeds and bulbs of the finest quality only. We try to do this one thing as well as
possible. It costs more to produce Seeds of the Burpee Quality, but they are more than
worth the extra cost.

Burpee’s R^d List for 1920 is a strictly business catalog. We have not attempted to give
descriptions to the vegetables listed in the following pages but have indicated by using heavy
type those varieties which we particularly recommend. If you are, in any way, unfamiliar
with the varieties listed, we would suggest that you consult BURPEE’S ANNUAL for 1920,
our Retail Catalo'g, which contains detailed information.

There is every indication that this is going to be a prosperous season in the Seed Trade.
Food prices are high and the demand is for Increased Production.

We will be pleased to have your order and assure you that we can serve you well. Your
inquiries and orders will have prompt and careful attention.

THE BURPEE STANDARD IN SEEDS is the highest it is possible to attain to-day,
and yet we aim for still further betterment. PROGRESS is our watchword!
Planters throughout the world, whether gardening for pleasure or profit, soon
learn that “the best is the cheapest.’’ These three sentences convey the principal
“reasons why’’ the Burpee-Business grows steadily year by year. Shall we have
the pleasure of serving you this season, or will you wait until importuned by some
traveling salesman to buy other seeds claimed to be “just as good as BURPEE’S’’ ?
You may get as good, but you cannot get better seeds at any price!

D Swe©+Peas

Three New Spencers for 1920

The first Spencer Sweet Pea in existence, brought to America by W. Atlee Burpee, created a
new era for this beautiful flower. As far back as 1887 we began to specialize in Sweet Peas,
and today’s list shows that most of the leading varieties originated with or were first intro-
duced to American gardens by the W. Atlee Burpee Co. In late years special pains have been
taken not only in developing new colors and shades, but also in breeding varieties with larger

and more perfect flowers. We are for-
tunate to have for 1920 introduction
^ a three varieties which we feel will be

) J welcomed by American flower-lovers.

Hawlmark Pink
New Spencer
Sweet Pea for 1920

3477 Hawlmark Pink

The Sweet Pea of the year. We think
Hawlmark Pink is one of the finest
varieties we have ever had
the good fortune to offer.
It originated with our friend
Mr. Hugh Dickson, of
Belfast, the noted Sweet
Pea expert. To the
Sweet Pea enthusiast the
source of origin is sufficient guarantee
for outstanding merits.

The standard is clear salmon pink, the wings almost
rose-pink. The flowers are really superb in size and
texture, with the standard attractively waved. The
long stems are strong but graceful, carrying four and
even five blooms to a stalk, all elegantly placed.

In sealed packets containing 12 seeds
each. Pkt. 35 cts., postpaid.

3439 Daisybud

A lovely novelty of delicate and
soft appearance. The color of
the flowers is a harmonious com-
bination of apple-blossom tints
with the suggestion of cream-
pink. The texture of the flower
is substantial but dainty. Wher-
ever the variety was exhibited it
was the object of much admiration.
The flowers are well formed and of
largest size, carried four on a stem
and well displayed.

In sealed packets containing 12 seeds
each. Pkt. 25 cts., postpaid.

3427 Brocade

A unique novelty of most charming color, or rather
combinations of color. It is a mixture of salmon,
rosy lavender, and rose-pink, with a satiny finish.

The flowers are large and finely formed on strong
stems.

In sealed packets containing 12 seeds each.

Pkt. 25 cts., postpaid.

The Burpee Novelties of the Early or Winter-Flowering
Spencer Sweet Peas are listed on pages 26-28.

Standard or Summer-Flowering
Spencer Sweet Peas

We offer re-selected stocks — grown at Floradale Farms. Sweet Peas were a very short crop
this past season and this together with increased expenses of growing has made all Sweet Peas
very high-priced. However, we shall endeavor to take care of all our customers but advise
ordering early to avoid disappointment.

Concerning GRANDIFLORA SWEET PEAS, the introduction of the many new and improved
Spencer Sweet Peas, particularly the Fordhook strains of Early-Flowering Spencers, has
steadily restricted the demand for the old and less desirable Grandiflora type. Progressive
growers are no longer using Grandiflora sorts. We discontinued growing them at Floradale
Farms some time ago and have now decided to stop listing them in our catalogs. The Spencer
Sweet Peas are much better in every way.

The Winter-Flowering Spencer Sweet Peas are the Sweet Peas for Florists. They are inval-
uable for greenhouse culture, blooming to perfection when grown indoors and coming into
flower by Christmas if sown the first part of September, and may be had all winter long from
succession plantings.

The Burpee varieties of Winter-Flowering Spencers are the result of more than ten years’ care-
ful scientific work. After the introduction of that magnificent Australian variety, “ Yarrawa,”
we began to cross it with the finest varieties of Burpee’s Summer-Flowering Spencers for the
purpose of breeding a complete race of improved Early-Flowering Sweet Peas.

The results have surpassed all expectations. We are now able to offer true Winter-Flowering
Spencer Sweet Peas in every desirable shade. And, what is of prime importance to florists,
our stocks come true to color. We have not offered a variety to our customers until we were
sure it would give satisfaction.

We could write pages of description and recommendation for the Burpee Winter-Flowering
Spencers but this is a business catalog and our space is limited.

Flower Seed Crops at Floradale Farms, California

Burpee-Quality Flower Seeds

Flower seeds of the finest varieties and highest quality have always been a specialty
with Burpee. Floradale Farms have come to be known as the California Home of Flowers
and, in addition to the large areas devoted there to the production of flower seeds we grow
annually many acres of flowers at Fordhook Farms in Pennsylvania and Sunnybrook
Farms in New Jersey.

Our stocks of Antirrhinums, Asters, Calendulas, Centaureas, Celosias, Perennial Chrysanthe-
mums, Cosmos, Gaillardia, Mignonettes, Pansies and Stocks, as well as the finer seeds such
as Begonias, Coleus, Geraniums, Heliotrope, etc., are worthy of particular attention. We
know from the comparative trials of flower seeds from all parts of the world, which we make
at Fordhook Farms each year, that all of our flower seeds are the best that can be
grown.

In the list below we have not attempted to give descriptions, for this*is primarily a Business
Catalog. Burpee’s Annual for 1920, our retail catalog, gives detailed information and com-
plete descriptions, and if any further particulars are desired, we shall be glad to answer inquiries
promptly and fully.

Wherever pound prices are quoted, half-pounds will be supplied at the pound price, and
quarter-pounds at T37 the pound price. Half-ounces at the ounce rate, except that we will
not supply less than one ounce of varieties priced at 20 cts. or less per ounce.

Flowering Bulbs and Roots

The Florist, as well as the Landscape Gardener, will find much of interest in the following lists.
Burpee’s Bulbs are selected with the same care and attention to Quality as are Burpee’s Seeds.
All of the bulbs and roots offered herein are first size (unless otherwise stated), sound and
healthy, and sure to bloom if given reasonable care.

We take particular pains in specially packing bulbs and roots to ensure their arrival in good
condition and, for this reason, always ship bulbs separately from seeds when both are ordered.
When placing your order specify when and how you wish your bulbs to be sent. We do not
ship in freezing weather unless ordered to do so and then only at customer’s risk.

Our collections of Dahlias and Gladioli are especially worthy of attention. Our list of Cannas
and Iris are not extensive but are carefully selected and comprise the best varieties for all
purposes; in fact, it has been our aim throughout to offer Quality rather than Quantity.
Refer to Burpee’s Annual for 1920, our retail catalog, for complete descriptions.

If you are interested in Tulips, Hyacinths, Narcissus, Crocus, or Hardy Perennials, send in
your name now to receive a copy of Burpee’s Fall Bulb Catalog (issued September 1st).

Note: Three or more bulbs. will be supplied at the dozen rates, 25 or more at the 100 rates, and 250 or
more at the thousand rates.
