Autumn, 1920

TO OUR FRIENDS, OUR CUSTOMERS:

Another Summer has marched into the land of Past Seasons.
Autumn is here, and Winter will soon be rushing down from out
of the North.

Nature is making her last gorgeous display, but one of these fine
mornings we shall find that Jack Frost has made his first call
and then it is time to prepare the garden for its Winter’s sleep.

We must begin now to plan for the Spring Awakening. Crocus,
the Herald of Spring, Tulips and Daffodils and Hyacinths — how
welcome they are when the earth is just beginning to respond to
the first few warm days! We must plant them now, before Win-
ter has stamped her icy seal upon the land.

Then we can withdraw to the corner by the fireside and laugh
at Winter’s blasts, secure in the knowledge that Spring is coming
and that we shall not lack for the first lovely tokens of her arrival.

Enchantress

HYACINTHS

The flower that makes every one think of Holland, with its
canals and quaint old windmills. The growing and handling
of Hyacinths and other “Dutch Bulbs” have been termed the
business of Holland, and in fact the world’s supply of these is
raised in The Netherlands. There is little to be
said about them. We are all acquainted with the
beautiful long spikes set closely with the individual
sweet-scented flowers. The snow-like texture of
the blooms and their delicate colorings go well together.

In others again the richness of the color carries life and
joy. All of them are daintily perfumed. There is no
bulb easier to raise than Hyacinths, be it for indoor
blooming during the winter, or for making a bed in the
open.

5701 Enchantress

Attractive, long spikes closely set with large bells of pale
delft-blue, shaded with deeper blue. An early bloomer,
valuable for bedding and fine for forcing in pots.

5703 Gertrude

One of the finest of all rose-pink shades. The flower-spikes
are long and full, making it a popular bedding hyacinth.

5704 King of the Blues

King of the Blues outclasses other blue varieties on account of
its purity and richness of color. The individual flower-spikes
are long and fully set with large, rich, dark-blue bells. A good
late forcing variety and makes a fine show in the flower-bed.

5706 La Victoire

Brilliant scarlet flowers and one of the first ones to come into bloom. Good for forcing, but

then somewhat lighter in color than if grown in the open.

5707 L’Innocence

The best of all white Hyacinths for all purposes. It is an
extra-early variety, with large spikes closely set with mag-
nificent pure white flowers. Fine for the flower-bed and
well suited for growing in pots or water for winter blooming.

5709 Yellow Hammer

Large trusses of pure creamy yellow flowers. An early-
blooming variety and the best yellow for indoor growing

EARLY SINGLE TULIPS

These are the first tulips to come in bloom early in spring, and may be had in a magnificent
scheme of bright colors. They are also greatly appreciated as winter bloomers, as they can be
forced quite easily in any dwelling and do not require a greenhouse.

are a vivid crimson-scarlet, broadly edged with rich golden yellow. The huge flowers are carried
upright on long, strong stems growing sixteen inches tall. Well adapted for early or late forcing.

DARWIN TULIPS

Darwin T ulips are considerably later than the early single varieties. They are probably the most
generally used of all bedding tulips. For forcing they are unsurpassed on account of their
strong growth and large-sized flowers. Grown in the
open, the bulbs begin to bloom early in May and continue
for an unusually long season that fills the gap between
the passing of the spring flowers and the coming of the
summer flowers. The plants have a sturdy appear-
ance. The deep green foliage and the upright strong j
stem lend a dignity which goes well with the very large
flowers. This class has a number of odd pastel-shade
varieties which enjoy great popularity.

5784 Baron de la Tonnaye I

mon rose, with deep blue base and white halo. One of
the most popular for forcing and for outdoor culture.

5792 Dream

A beautiful large-flowered variety of light and dark shades of heliotrope,
with a heavy deep violet hue on the inside and a blue base. A very odd
but attractive pastel shade. Twenty-six inches high.

5804 Gretchen (Margaret)

Pale silvery rose, flushed white; inside soft pink and white with blue
center. A refined and delicate coloring combined with

white when fully developed. The anthers are dark. The flowers are
not quite as large as the other Darwins. Twenty-four inches tall.

COTTAGE TULIPS

The May-Flowering or Cottage Tulips bloom about the same time as the Darwins. The color
range and value of the various shades are beautiful. To see the brilliant red or the fiery orange
in bright sunlight simply dazzles the eye and makes it turn to the softer yellows and pinks.

The color and form of the flowers,
ing the flowers in some varieties on
cratic mood, and in others gracefully
to bring lifeand joy into the border

together with varying habits of growth, carry-
Lg, strong stems, upright in an aristo-
drooping, give this class an adaptability

yellow. Flowers of large size
and very good form, carried on

Orange

King

5776 Orange King

a fine shade of rose. The inside is rich orange scarlet marked with yellow
The color is superb, especially in bright sunlight. Flowers are large,
of almost globular form, and decidedly fragrant. Twenty-two inches high.

5777 Inglescomb Yellow

Shining canary yellow, of large size, perfect form, and strong growth. Since
there is no yellow represented in the Darwin group, this is widely used in com-
bination with them and fits in very well indeed. Twenty inches high.

5778 Picotee

White with a fine margin of deep rose. The flowers are large, and as they age they
develop a rose cast and the petals reflex, giving grace and daintiness. This variety
is a great favorite and is also known as Maiden’s Blush. Twenty inches high.

5779 The Fawn

culture of the double varieties is just as easy as that of the singles. Planted in pans,
4 to 6 each, they make attractive winter-bloomers, and last even longer than the single varieties.
Placed in the open border they come into bloom slightly later than the Early Single Tulips.

BREEDER TULIPS

Of all the Tulips, the “Breeders” are without question the most striking. They have been the
“hobby” of English fanciers for more than a century. They surpass even the finest of the Dar-
wins in their tall, majestic growth and truly enormous blooms. But it is their rich coloring
which places them in a class by themselves — old gold and bronze, terra-cotta and salmon,
crushed strawberry and purple, in the most perfect harmony of rare colors found in nature.

NARCISSUS

All that Daffodils need is a good start to make themselves naturally and gloriously “at home”
in  any  location.  Their  delicately  scented  flowers  are  very  welcome  in  the  winter  pots  and  boxes;
but out-of-doors, in garden, lawn, or wildwood, they find their greatest perfection. The Narcissi
are sometimes divided into three groups, according to the size of their trumpet, as the cup
or inner tubular part of the flower is called. The outer row of petals is known as the peri-
anth and in some sorts it differs in color from the trumpet. There are a few varieties in
which the trumpet is double. The small trumpet Narcissi are again divided into several
classes, of which the Poeticus, Poetaz, Polyanthus, and Jonquils are the most important. All

are very hardy, with the exception of the clustered Poly-
anthus varieties, which must be planted deeply to live

nosed bulbs are the most satisfactory, because they will not only make stronger plants, but will
produce at least two vigorous flower-stems. Every bulb sent out by us is sold under Our Double
