Introduction
John K. Rugowski of Manitowoc, Wis. has been doing some great
work in the line of breeding fine flowers and vegetables. This work was
taken up by him fourteen years ago in which time he has produced some
wonderful Flowers and Vegetables that are being put on the market year
after year.
In 1919 Mr. Rugowski put out his new tomato (Earliest Producer).
Those who have tried it will always plant it. In the spring of 1920 Two
New Asters were put out only in original packages of 50 seeds per package
at $1.50. All were sold long before he had expected. They were Pure
Honor and Meritorious Pink. This season those same flowers will be sold
in larger quantities and at a reduced price.
All the seed listed in this catalog were grown under Mr. J. K. Ru-
gowski’s own supervision from the time of starting the seed until put into
packages. The plants were all absolutely free from blight or any other
diseases. If there is any more particular person in his garden than Mr.
Rugowski then ask some one who has visited his place who are easy to
meet as there were thousands of them from all parts of the country last
season, especially when everything looked at its best. Experts from large
seed houses traveled hundreds of miles to inspect his crops who have also
placed large orders for his seeds.
Mr. Rugowski has exhibited the Asters listed in this catalog at many
places always winning First Prizes. All First Prizes at Manitowoc County
Fair, 1920. All First Prizes at Wisconsin State Fair, 1920. Exhibited at
Wisconsin State Florists’ Association, Sept. 12, 1919, again Sept. 3, 1920.
Here he had some job to convince some that they were not chrysanthe-
mums. On the 16th day of Sept., 1920, exhibited at Commercial Flower
Growers of Chicago. On another page read what they have to say regard-
ing Mr. Rugowski’s work in the line of improving.
While on this exhibit tour Mr. Rugowski also visited most of the
leading wholesale florists in the larger cities. After showing his flowers
at these places he could have returned home and started cutting all blooms
and received $10.00 per 100 when the best had been selling at this time
between $2.00 and $3.00 at these places. This Mr. Rugowski refused as he
wishes everybody to grow good Asters. This would be impossible if he
sold his bloom in the market (where would the seed come from) as he is
the only man that has ever produced this kind of Aster. As one expert
said : “The Best in the World Bar None.”
Mr. Rugowski had offered $1000.00 to any person in America who
could duplicate his Aster allowing the person 10 per cent depreciation. But
none could show up. After the State Fair Exhibit, Governor Philipps re-
ceived a bouquet of these Asters.
There is only one strain of Asters that will make money for the
commercial grower in 1921 — That is the Rugowski Strain.
There is only one strain of Asters that will please the owner of an
estate — The Rugowski Strain.
One plant will pay for a package of seed when sold in the market.
You get 250 seeds or over in each full size package ; 125 seeds in half size
package. Put up in two sizes.

fore all is gone.

RUGOWSKI’S PURE HONOR ASTER
RUGOWSKI’S PURE HONOR ASTER
PURE HONOR ASTER is Mr. Rugowski’s first New
Origination in the Aster line. This flower was perfected sev-
eral years ago but was not disseminated until the spring of
1920, when Mr. Rugowski had offered it for sale in Original
Packages of 50 seeds for $1.50 each package.' Its beginning
runs back for thirteen years when Mr. Rugowski had first
commenced breeding plants. The pleasure came at last when
Mr. Rugowski’ s labor had started to bear fruit for in this
flower he has produced something that the best experts in the
flower world have the highest praise for.
The bloom of this flower averages from 31/2 to 4i/^ inches
in diameter on long, single stems, about 90 per cent have no
laterals at all. It is a branching variety. The blooms are so
heavy as to lean toward the ground. There is no other white
Aster that will retain its Pure White Color longer than the
Pure Honor.
It will be Pure Honor to have this flower in your garden
in 1921.
Seed of this Aster is put up in two sizes of packages, also
in bulk.
Full Size Package of 250 seeds or more $ 1.00
Half Size Package of 125 seeds or more .50

lovers of Asters who have seen it have placed an order and so
would you if you saw it.

RUGOWSKI’S MERITORIOUS PINK ASTER
MERITORIOUS PINK ASTER deserves its name for the
beauty of this flower cannot be explained on twice the amount
of space on this page. The size is just as you see it here. It
is a finest Flesh Pink on very long-, straight stems. It is a
branching variety, grows about 21/2 feet high, very strong
trunk. It will produce at least eight to twelve larger sized
blooms than there ever appeared on the market. Also a large
number of late blooms. It is mid-season and comes in right
after Pure Honor. For a commercial purpose there is no
other fllower that can duplicate it for size, color and stem.
Last Fall the blooms of Meritorious Pink if cut for the market
would bring $10.00 per 100 in any large city and an equal
amount in any flower shop in the country.
This strain was also produced by Mr. Rugowski and put
out for the first time in the Spring of 1920 in original pack-
ages of 50 seeds for $1.50. All seed was sold long before Mr.
Rugowski expected. Of course the supply was limited.
This season the supply is a great deal larger and for no
reason should you omit this in your order. Whether you
grow for pleasure or profit, one plant will pay for a full size
package of seed. It takes no more space or time to grow good
Asters than it does poor ones.

RUGOWSKI’S DWARF AMERICAN BEAUTY
DWARF AMERICAN BEAUTY is a great improvement
over the well known American Beauty, especially for Com-
mercial purposes. The Blooms are all of a uniform size, on
long, straight stems from 14 to 18 inches long. It is of a
dwarf habit and at no time do the blooms touch the ground.
This strain will produce at least 10 to 12 good marketable
blooms without disbudding or pinching. In addition it will
put out at least a dozen extra shoots with latteral than can be
taken off when in full bloom without spoiling the stem for
market purpose. The smaller blooms can be used for design
work. The past season this strain has averaged over Forty
Blooms to each plant. Grown on a large scale, at least half
of this amount would be considered choice bloom that would
bring fancy prices.
We plant all our Asters 2 by 3 feet. The blooms never
show a sign of a center at no time. Neither will the most
severe storms harm the plant. Not so with the American
Beauty. When in its prime a slight storm does away with
the best blooms.
Blooms of this strain were exhibited at the Wisconsin
State Fair where they took First Prize. Also exhibited at
Chicago in many places, especially at the Commercial Flower
Growers’ Meeting at Chicago, Sept. 16th, 1920.
The seed of this Aster is going out for the first time at
prices everybody can afford.

RUGOWSKI’S HONOR MIXTURE ASTER
RUGOWSKI’S HONOR MIXTURE consists of a New
Strain of Asters of all colors. Colors in this mixture are:
Purple, Red, Lavender, Pink, White and Rose. This is a
strain of Pure Honor crossed with a Crego. It is a branching
variety, dwarf in growth, same as Dwarf American Beauty.
This strain will outclass any Aster after Mr. Rugowski gets
all colors distinct which he expects to have the following
season. Mr. Rugowski did not wish to put this on the market
this season on account of not having distinct colors, but was
induced by expert seedsmen to put it out as a mixture, that
would save the seed from going to waste. So we have made up
to list this in a mixture only. Of course it would not be the
best for commercial purposes unless put in on a large scale to
have enough of each color for a good cutting of each, yet
where a mixed Aster is desired there is nothing better to be
had. The average blooms run from 4 to 6 V 2 inches in diame-
ter. The shapes vary some as you will find on front page of
catalog.
Parties who make a business of growing plants for sale
will gain many satisfied customers by using this mixture. You
would want nothing better in your front yard. This will be
listed with some of the best seed houses in the country who
have placed an order for same after seeing it in the field.
There must be a reason.

RUGOWSKI’S RED FEATHER ASTER
This Aster like all other flowers has its lovers. This was
particularly noted at the numerous exhibits we have had in
the past. Where you find a person that takes a liking to
single Dahlias he cannot help but take a fancy to this Aster.
The wide outspreading petals measuring nearly seven
inches across on a long, straight stem, several petals covering
its center and the brilliant color will take any such fancier’s
eye.
This strain has been propagated by Mr. Rugowski for
several years and it is now on sale for the first time. The
stock is limited and will be sold in packages only, same size as
all others, 250 seeds in a full size package. These blooms when
cut will stand up a great deal longer than any Aster
known without getting a fresh supply of water. For this one
reason it is a good one to grow where flowers are carried to
cemeteries, where fresh supply of water is not obtained.
Plants are dwarf branching, no laterals, and will produce
from 14 to 20 blooms to each plant, the size of cut, if planted
as we do 2 by 3 feet.

RUGOWSKl’S 101 ASTER
PAGE NINE
RUGOWSKFS 101 ASTER
101 ASTER sounds as a peculiar name for a flower. Some would
think that the name was selected from the well-known Wild West show,
“The 101 Ranch” that has traveled all over the country and which millions
have seen and enjoyed very much. Now with the 101 Aster we are sure
that there will be equally as many enjoying this flower as there were at
the “101 Ranch” show.
The original plant of the 101 Aster has actually produced 101 fancy
blooms, all opened up at the same time. When a photo was taken of it in
the fleld with Mr. Rugowski admiring it, someone suggested what he
would call it. For the present it will be the 101 Aster, and this is the
name it will be known by in the future.
The 101 Aster comes in two distinct colors that are very odd in the
Aster family. One is a Majenta, or dark red and the other is Blue Plum,
running into Purple.
This strain is a branching variety with many laterals. Some very
long stems grow about 2 feet tall or over if planted 2 by 3 feet in good
rich soil. Each plant should produce at least 101 blooms, averaging from
two to three inches across. The plant in the illustration had 142 blooms
when pulled out ready for the camera.
For Design Work there is no Aster to compare with it.

RUGOWSKI’S EAGLE ASTER
RUGOWSKFS EAGLE ASTER
The EAGLE ASTER as Mr. Rugowski calls it was named after the
Fraternal Order of Eagles of which order Mr. Rugowski is a member. Not
only a member but his place of business is located just across the street
from the proposed New Club House that is now under construction — the
finest in the country.
Mr. Rugowski has worked on this Aster nearly ten years. He has
it in two colors that are distinct. One in White and Crimson that runs
99% pure. There is also a Grand Mixture that runs in all shades from
Dark Puiple to the Most Delicate Pink. This mixture will please every-
body where different shapes of flowers are desired. We do not recommend
this for commercial purposes, but it cannot be beat for Design Work. It
is mid-season, comes in right after the Hohenzolern. Bloom of immense
size and very full.
Every member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles that buys the
White Eagle Aster is doing his bit toward the New Club House, that is now
under construction. All money derived from the White Eagle Aster will
be donated toward this building. If you are an Eagle, when placing your
order give full name and your number of membership. Ladies belonging
to the Auxiliary should do the same. Eagles should boost this one to the
limit.

IMPROVED QUEEN OF THE MARKET ASTER
IMPROVED QUEEN OF THE MARKET ASTER
There should have been more attention paid to this strain of Asters
in the past, as there have been some of the best growers who have cast
this aside for a few reasons. Most everybody buys his seed and after try-
ing at the different places there was no relief. The strain was always
getting worse, instead of better. Where good long stems were desired for
market purpose the strains have put out too many small laterals.
Mr. Rugowski, the past few years, has improved this strain to such
an extent that the commercial grower will again plant on a large scale, as
the strain we have has but a very few laterals, at least 60% of all colors
have no laterals at all. Each bloom comes on a long straight stem from
12 to 14 inches long with a good sized bloom.
Blooms of this strain were on exhibit at the Florists' National Con-
vention at Cleveland, Ohio, where Mr. Rugowski was personally with his
exhibit of Asters. These got special mention at the time. There were
large orders placed for this Aster at this time by some of the leading
florists of the country from Boston to San Francisco.
The supply of this seed is limited to package form only, in the fol-
lowing colors ; Crimson, Purple, Lavender, White and Rose. Rose is some-
what mixed with a light Pink. This strain should be planted II /2 by 2 feet.

RUGOWSKI’S MANITOWOC ASTER
RUGOWSKI’S MANITOWOC ASTER
The illustration on this page is PURPLE HONOR. Mr. Rugowski
has tried his best to give you an opportunity to grow this flower in 1921 —
his efforts have failed so far. He has the strain to perfection but color
does not run true. So we have decided not to offer Purple Honor this
season. No doubt there will be many disappointments by those who have
seen this Aster and who would pay any price asked if it could only be had.
The blooms of Purple Honor resemble Pure Honor, but not quite so shaggy.
There is no sign of a center at any time, in fact it would be hard to detect
where the center would be. Seed of this Aster at all times will not be
plentiful as it will require a special process to ripen it on account of its
fullness and subjected to wetten out.
In place of the PURPLE HONOR we will offer the MANITOWOC
ASTER, same shape and size of blooms. Instead of a dwarf growth it is
a tall variety. Comes in mixed colors : white, pink and rose only. Where
tall Asters are wanted the Manitowoc Aster has no equal. Very large
flowers on very long straight stems. This strain should be planted 2 by 3
feet if good results should be had.
This Aster as some of the other strains could not be omitted to
produce distinct colors. It might take years of hard labor to do it.

Read the Direction how Mr. Rugowski grows his Asters. If you will follow them, there should be no reason why
you cannot grow as good Asters as he does. There is no secret in growing good Asters. All it requires is Good Seed,
Plenty of Plant Food and Good Tillage. Of course you could not grow good flowers with a poor strain of seed. Mr. Rugowski
is willing to challenge the world with his strain of Asters. The best experts are willing to back him to the limit. As one
judge said: “Best in the world barring none.” They need not be flattered, they are all there.

I am transmitting herewith .the resolution passed
at that meeting, endorsing these asters as being a very
meritorious flower. It was the sense of the resolution that
these asters be endorsed by the association as having the
largest flower and longest stems and in every way being superior
to any aster thus far seen in the market. It is with pleasure

EARLIEST PRODUCER TOMATO
EARLIEST PRODUCER TOMATO has shown wonderful results
wherever grown the past two seasons. This seed was first put out in 1919
in original packages only. In the spring of 1920 the demand for quantities
in pound lots had increased to such an extent from those who had given
it a trial in 1919 that we have grown acres of them for seed purposes
only. We have harvested a good crop. The tomatoes were pulped out
right on the field and the pulp put back on the soil for fertilizer. The seed
of this strain is 99 % pure and at no time was it grown by any other person
for seed purpose than by Mr. Rugowski, the originator. All plants are
inspected by him personally and all fruit before selecting for seed is gone
over with the utmost care to hold this strain as pure as possible. We do
not believe that there is another variety of Tomato that is being grown
for seed purpose that gets more attention than EARLIEST PRODUCER
TOMATO.
The fruit is a fine red, oval shape, perfectly smooth. This tomato
will ripen up as early as Earlyanna. 98% of fruit has no scars of any
kind. It is a good shipper and excellent keeper, very meaty, and has small
seed cells.

This Photo was taken latter part of Aug., 1918. In the row

not blight — This is the RUGOWSKI.
Read the following clipping from The Seed World of Sept. 3, 1920:
LATE POTATO BLIGHT STRIKES OHIO CROP
Potatoes to left are free from blight, all to right blighted, 1920,
Photo taken Aug. 24th. All received same care and treatmnet.
This Potato was originated by Mr. Rugowski, also propagated for
the last five years. In the spring of 1920 it had shown its appearance out-
side of Mr. Rugowski’s own hands when it was offered for sale at 4 lbs.
for $1.00. The demand was so great for this Potato that in a short time
orders had to be canceled, as a limited amount was only intended to make
tests of in the different climates. Had all orders been filled there would
be no stock left for propagating. But Mr. Rugowski knew better. So this
season you can safely place your order for Rugowski Potato and have your
order filled, if you do not wait until planting time, as orders are
coming in now for Bbl. lots instead of 4 lbs. which was the limit per cus-
tomer last season.
This Potato will be sold in the following form at prices that it de-
serves to produce such :
I Carton, containing 75 good, sound cuttings of 1 or 2 eyes $1.00
6 Cartons, each containing 75 sound cuttings of 1 or 2 eyes 5.00
One Bushel, bulk $10.00
One Bbb.l of 2 % bushels 25.00
Warnings are issued to potato growers of Ohio by the department
of botany at the Ohio Experiment Station, Wooster, that late blight is
spreading rapidly. As the cool, moist weather of the season is particularly
favorable to its development, there may be a widespread and serious in-
fection. Potato growers are urged to spray with Bordeaux mixture 4-5-50
thoroughly so that the lower as well as the upper sides of the leaves are
well covered.
Plant lice and leaf hoppers are numerous on potatoes this year.
These little insects are on the under side of the leaves and assist in dissem-
inating the spores of the fungus. By adding black leaf 40, 1 part to 800
parts of spray, to the Bordeaux the insects can be exterminated. The de-
partment also urges potato growers to keep on the lookout for hills which
resist attack and to dig these separately for seed.
Mr. Rugowski has had this kind of Potato the last five years. It
is at your disposal now. The yield of this potato in 1920 was over 400 bu.
per acre.
You will have an opportunity to see this potato at digging time, in
Moving Pictures, together with all other novelties in this catalog.

RUGOWSKI’S GIANT FRILLED PANSY
This Pansy was propagated by Mr, Rugowski for several years.
Crossed and crossed over and over again until the season of 1920 when he
has produced what he wanted. The blooms are fully as large as the well-
known Masterpiece Pansy on long stems. They are very double as the
illustration will show. About 95% are frilled in some of the finest colors
that were ever seen in Pansies.

Mr. Rugowski has created more Finer Flowers and Vegetables the
last thirteen years than any other person living.
RUGOWSKFS WAX BEAN
This bean will produce more pods of uniform size than any other
of the wax variety. The seed itself is 25% smaller than the well-known
Curries Rust Proof Wax from which it was originated. Its color is some-
what purple instead of black. Where beans are used on a large scale this
seed will plant 25% more space than other varieties.
The pods are somewhat shorter than Curries Rust Proof but comes
in several days earlier. Market gardeners who are always looking for
Early Beans will find the Rugowski Wax is just what is wanted. A few
, days count big in dollars. The early outdoor vegetables always bring a lot
of money. The Rugowski Wax is the Very Earliest of them all.
The supply is limited this season to packages only.

5 Ounce Package i.oo
We would like to have everybody try this bean so do not order over
5 packages as this is the limit to one party this season.
In 1922 Mr. Rugowski is going to put out a New Wax Bean, Pencil
Podded, that will be grown by canners. A good test was made last season
of this bean as a canner.

How To Grow Asters
Everybody can grow this flower successfully if he or she
will follow these directions. These are the points that Mr.
Rugowski recommends to make a success:
A GOOD STRAIN OF SEED, GOOD PLANT FOOD,
GOOD TILLAGE.
Any soil will produce Good Asters where these three
points are observed.
The soil must be free from fungus or acid. If your soil
contains fungus to any extent use as much coal ashes as you
possibly can get, well sifted through in. screen. Put on
broadcast at rate of four to flve tons to an acre. Although
they contain no plant food they will do away with certain
fungus that does harm to the plants.
If your soil contains acid, tile it at once. Use about one
and one-half ton of air slacked lime per acre or three tons of
ground lime stone. This is the only remedy for acid soil.
PLANT FOOD — You can never get too much plant food.
Where humus is available it should be used freely. Also a
good commercial fertilizer of high grade at rate of 25 lbs. per
1000 sq. ft. Use a good Bone Meal 3-24 formula, or a complete
fertilizer, 2-8-4 or 3-8-6. That is 2% nitrogen, 8% phosphate
and 4% potash. Use this broadcast just before preparing
land. It should be well worked into the soil about four or five
inches deep.
GOOD STRAIN OF SEED — It is absolutely necessary to
have a good strain of seed to produce a good flower or veget-
able.
GOOD TILLAGE — Good Tillage is as important as good
seed for if you neglect to work your crops the Best Seed is no
good.
Asters should not be crowded to get the best results of
them. Where land is plentiful they should be set out at least
2 by 3 feet apart each way. Where only one row is set out,
plants should not be closer than 18 inches apart.
Seed should not be put in too early. We never start our
seed until April 1st in a hot bed or greenhouse. Transplant
latter part of May until July 1st if succession is wanted.
When plant shows its first bud, pinch it off. This will
spread the plant. This should be done regardless of how you
would love to see the first bloom .
If you follow the above directions you can meet me at
Washington, D. C., third week in August, 1921, where Mr.
Rugowski will be again to exhibit a number of New Asters
and other flowers he has under way.
There will soon be a surprise sprung by Mr. Rugowski,
who is Some Grower and Propagator in Gladiolus.
