The Weed Landscape Nursery is located on
the Canyon Road six miles west of Portland
and one mile east of Beaverton. We invite
i^sp^ction of stock at all times, and upon

them over our grounds. From Portland the
nursery may be reached via auto over the
Canyon Road six miles from the center of
the city.

nursery is owned by Howard Evarts
Weed, for many years a Landscape Architect
of Chicago. The location was selected after
ten years' investigation to find the ideal com-
bination of soil and climatic conditions suit-
able for the growth of ornamental plants. A
cordial invitation is extended to visitors at
all times to inspect the wonderful variety of
ornamental plants which we grow. We have
the most extensive collection of Peonies in
the west and the largest selection of Iris in
the Northwest. Those who have not seen our
collections of these two flowers can little
realize their beauty. The Iris are at their
best ^ during the month of May and the
Peonies during the first three weeks of June.
Phloxes and other perennials make a fine
showing later in the season, so one will be
amply repaid for the time expended in a
visit to the nursery at any season.

We specialize in landscape gardening. If
you contemplate the planting of ornamental
plants on your home grounds, Mr. Weed will
be pleased to inspect your grounds and give
an estimate of the cost of any improvements.

PEONIES

From the earliest times the Peony has been recog-
nized as the grandest of all flowers, vying with the
rose in popular favor. While it succeeds in all tem-
perate climates, it seems to reach its greatest perfec-
tion in the climatic conditions of the Pacific North-
west. It requires no special care in its cultivation,
but should be taken up every eight or ten years,
divided and reset. They do best in full or partial
sunlight.

Our present collection of peonies is the result of
ten years selection and critical study of varieties. As
there have - been over two thousand varieties intro-
duced,' our aim is to keep our list below the three
hundred mark. But as new varieties are introduced,
we spend each June among our blooms trying to find
varieties with which we can live without. We wish
to keep ; only the distinctive kinds — those which our
visitors select when they see the blooms. In this study
w^e have discarded over a hundred varieties and now
present this list of 346 varieties as being the best in
existence — not a^ poor or even a medium sort in the
lot.

We advise planting only in the fall, September and
October being best. The plants which we furnish
have three to five eyes and most varieties will give
bloom the first year from planting. Our prices are
as low as good plants can be furnished, as peonies
increase only slowly from the division of the roots.
After all, it is not what one pays for an article, as
w^hat they get for their money. One good peony root
is worth a dozen poor roots and one superior variety
is worth a dozen of the common sorts.

Peonies are best selected at the nursery during the
blooming season of May and June. The main showing
is generally in early June, peonies being at their
best at the same season as roses. Visitors at the
nursery select their own varieties for delivery of the
roots in September. In the selection of varieties it Is
important to get those which bloom at different sea-
sons and in the various assortments of single, Japo-

nese and double flowering. If the selection of varieties
is left to us, we will give the best assortment for the
money expended and an assortment which will extend
the flowering season over a period of six weeks. In
color, peonies are red, pink and white, with all
shades between.

PEONIES ARE CLASSIFIED AS FOLLOWS

SINGLE. Those with a single row of wide guard
petals, and a center of yellow pollen bearing stamens.

SEMI-DOUBLE. Those with several rows of wide
petals, and a center of stamens and partially trans-
formed petaloids.

JAPANESE. Those having two rows of wide outer
petals and a center composed of narrow petaloids
of various colors, but without pollen.

ANEMENE. A step further in the process of doub-
ling, with the stamens all transformed into short,
narrow petals, forming a round cushion in the
center of the flower.

CROWN. Here the wide petals are developed in the
center of the flower, forming a high crown, with
the narrow short petals forming a ring or collar
around it.

BOMB. More fully double, in which all the center
ptals are uniformly wide, approaching the guards,
but distinctly differentiated from them, forming
a globe shaped center without collar or crown.

SEMI-ROSE. Flowers in which the petals are uni-
formly wide, but are loosely built, generally with
a few pollen bearing stamens showing.

ROSE. Completely double with the petals all wide,
forming a perfect rose-shaped flower.

In the description of varieties, we give the name
of the originator, date of introduction, type of flower,
color, season, and price. We realize that the names
and descriptions given mean nothing to one not
familiar with peonies in trying to make a selection
of varieties from a catalog. We have therefore placed
* before those varieties which are of special merit
for the small prices asked for them. In other words,
we consider these varieties the best for the money.

We have hundreds of visitors at the nursery dur-
ing the peony season, and if you have never seen
thirty thousand peonies in bloom, mere words cannot
describe their beauty to you. So here is the invita-
tion to you to see this wonderful sight.

Early May Flowering
Peonies

These are mostly single and include several distinct
species. Some should be included in every collection,
for they bloom from one to four weeks earlier than
the others. The season of bloom is from the middle of
April to the last of May.

ANOMALA. A graceful species with fine cut foliage.
Rose-lilac flowers $2.00

ANOMALA, PETER BARR. With large saucer shaped
flowers. Rich crimson. One of the first to bloom.

AVANTE GARDE (Lemoine). A hybrid obtained by
crossing with Wittmanniana. Pale rose, base of

CORALLINA. Deep crimson flowers, followed by or-

DECORA ELATIOR. . Large blooms of deep rich

Single Peonies

Most people know the peony only as a double flower,
but as the single flowers become better known, they
are very popular. When a selection of varieties is
made during the blooming season, several varieties of
the singles are selected, as they make a pleasing con-
trast with the double sorts. So some of these should
be included in every collection.

Japanese Peonies

The Japanese Peonies are intermediate between the
single and double flowers, having two rows of guard
petals, with the stamens transformed into narrow
petaloids. To distinguish between a single and a
Japanese peony, we have only to remember that the
stamens bear yellow pollen in the singles, while the
petaloids of the Japanese flowers have no pollen.

This class of peonies is as yet but little known to
the general public and visitors to our nursery or
flower exhibits, are much enthused by their distinctive
beauty. The flowers are so different from the double

varieties, that many of our visitors order a special

collection of only Japanese varieties.

globular, crown. Uniform rose-white, changing to

ADDIELANCHA. (Brand, 1907.) Rose type. Creamy
white, not differentiated. Outer guard petals promi-
nently flecked crimson and crown petals slightly so.
Base of center petals yellow. Fragrance X. Strong
grower. Four or five lateral flowers blooming only
one or two days later than the main flower, thus
forming a complete boquet on a single stem. Late.

This variety was originated by O. F. Brand in
1907, who named it after his first wife. From
him we obtained our plants in 1909. A year or
so later, however, the entire stock of this variety
disappeared from the Brand Nursery, being sold out
by mistake. We now reintroduce it as being one
of the finest of the Brand peonies. Brand said of
it in 1907 : “There is something about this flower
that is exceedingly lovely and attractive, a form
and harmonious arrangement of its petals that
fascinates at the first glance. With four or more
blossoms open at once, it forms a whole boquet

of striking perfection.” $25.00

We can furnish during the season any number of
Peony blooms in any desired colors. We also furnish
thousands of blooms for the decoration of automobiles
used in the floral parade of the Portland Rose Festi-
val. Peonies hold up better than any other flower
and practically all of the first prize cars and floats
in the floral parade are decorated with peonies, most
of which come from our collection.

Peonies last as cut flowers depending on the time
they are cut. When cut in the middle of the day

after opening, they will last but two or three days.

But when cut in bud and placed in water in a cool

dark place, thus taking 24 hours to fully open, they

will last for two weeks.
