MIXSON’S
HIGH-GRADE SEEDS

For Truck Farmers and
Market Gardeners

W, H, Mixson Seed Co,

LARGEST WHOLESALE SEEDSMEN SOUTHEAST

Charleston, South Carolina

IT is for the benefit of the Truck Farmer and Market Gardener that this Catalog is
primarily issued. These men invest heavily in the crops they produce, and the ques-
tion of Seed is to them, therefore, of vital importance. No matter how ideal the
preparation, or high grade the fertilizer, or how perfect the growing season or the con-
dition of the market, all will go for naught if the proper seeds have not been used. Intel-
ligent farmers know this, and it is to this class of farmers that Mixson’s Seeds appeal.

Located as we are in the trucking section, coming into contact with many farmers from
many sections of the South, we fully appreciate the needs and problems of the Truck Farmer,
and it is our aim to give him service to which he can turn with dependence. Our Ferndale
Trial Grounds afford us an opportunity to study these problems at first hand, and we are
probably the only Seedsmen operating in the South a Trial Ground for truck crops.

And if they appeal to the Truck Farmer, the Home Gardener should also use them. It is
true that he has not the investment of the farmer, and for this reason he is often prone to
“take a chance”, but this is absolutely unnecessary, when Mixson’s Seeds are so easily secured.

About Prices — The quotations made herewith are the ruling prices when this Catalog goes
to press, but it is manifestly impossible to name prices in December which will hold good
through the season. In fact, they are all liable to change. If a reduction has taken place, we
will make proper refund, and if there has been an advance, we will notify you. If ordering at
prices in this catalog, please so state in your order.

About Shipping — Prices are f.o.b. Charleston, meaning that freight or express charges are
to be paid by you on delivery. If you have no Agent at your shipping point, they must be in-
cluded in your order, or we can ship to the nearest point where there is an Agent. Please state
if you wish Express or Freight shipment, otherwise we will use our judgment. Seeds can also
be sent by Parcel Post, and this amount must be included in your remittance.

Terms — Cash with order, but if you wish we will send C.O.D. by Express or Parcel Post
or Sight Draft Bill of Lading attached through your bank by Freight, provided you send one-
fourth of the amount of your order.

Non Warranty — We give no warranty, express or implied, as to description, quality,
productiveness or any other matter of any seeds we sell, and will in no way be responsible
for the crop.

MIXSON’S SELECTED SEED POTATOES

Grown in Maine from the very best selected seed stock, in sections best suited
to their proper production, rigidly inspected and rogued while growing, care-
fully isolated to prevent mixture, painstakingly harvested and stored, then
after all this, closely inspected on their arrival in Charleston, — our Seed Pota-
toes represent stock as near perfection as it is humanly possible to get them.

Cheaper Potatoes can, of course, be gotten, but we are certain that any differ-
ence in price of the seed will be seen in differnce in the crop. The best proof
of the value of our Seed Potatoes is the many truck farmers who buy them
from us every year, in large quantities, in the face of lower quotations.

IRISH COBBLER

The standard white Potato for shipping. Early, round, with deep

ing period.  Larger  bush  than  Cobbler.  Peck,  $1.45;  bushel,  $5.00;
sack of 10 pecks, $11.00.

Prices Are P.O.B. Charleston, and Are Subject to Change.

TO LARGE BUYERS — When this Catalog goes to press in December, it is
manifestly impossible to name prices on Potatoes that will hold good the
entire season. When in the market, therefore, write us, stating quantity
wanted, and we will quote. We are large handlers of high grade stock.

Mixson’s Earliest of All Tomatoes

TOMATOES

Mixson’s Earliest of All — The earliest variety in the whole list. Fruits are purple, solid,
medium sized, ripening evenly all over, and unusually free from cracks. In fact, it is
unusual to find all these good qualities in so early a variety, because usually when
earliness is attained, some desirable feature is lost, but Earliest of All retains them all.
This is strictly our own introduction, but it is no longer an experiment as we have been
selling this stock for fifteen years, with numerous voluntary testimonials from every
Southern state. A tremendous bearer Ounce, 55c; Pound, $5.00; 10 lbs., $47.50

Selected Globe — Medium early, maturing right after Earliest of All, and an admirable va-
riety for shipping. Purple, globular solid fruits with few seeds, ripening evenly. Plants
are sturdy. Our strain is closely selected .... Ounce, 45c; Pound, $4.00; 10 lbs., $37.50

GRASS SEEDS FOR PERMANENT PASTURES

During the past five years the South has made tremendous strides in providing
permanent pastures for stock. Farmers have now realized that the mere fencing
in of some waste land and calling it a pasture does not necessarily make it one, but
the proper seeding and care must be taken in order to attain the desired results. A
combination of several plants is always to be preferred to a single one, as you will
get a more balanced ration, and a longer grazing period. Lespedeza,, Carpet Grass
and Dallis Grass work well in such a combination. Full information can no doubt
be obtained from your County Agent or State Agricultural College. We ourselves
have several bulletins which we will be glad to send to any one interested.

LESPEDEZA

Furnishes excellent grazing during the summer and early fall. Feeding value is very close to
that of Alfalfa. Relished by all stock. In combination, 10 pounds per acre is needed or 25
pounds per acre alone. Per lb., 30c; 10 lb. lots @ 25c. Write for price in larger lots.

CARPET GRASS

A perennial that spreads by creeping stems that root at every joint, forming a dense compact
sod. Especially adapted to the sandy soils of the Costal Plain. Does not have underground
roots like Bermuda, and therefore can easily be eradicated. Does not like shade. The more it
is trampled, the more it spreads. Per lb., 65c; 10 lb. lots @ 57c. Write for price in larger lots.
When sown alone, 10 to 12 pounds per acre is advised, or 6 pounds, alone.

DALLIS GRASS

A very hardy grass, enduring drought and extremes of temperature better than most grasses.
Prefer good fertile soil and does not make its best growth in too sandy a soil. It spreads
rapidly. 10 pounds of seed is needed for an acre alone, or 5 pounds in combination. Per lb.,
50c ; 25 lb. lots @ 47c. Write for price on larger lots.

The standard inoculation for all Le-
gumes. Comes in the jelly form, with
millions of live bacteria, with the pat-
ented ventilated stopper. For Peas,
Beans, Alfalfa, Clovers, Vetches, Les-
pedeza, Cow Peas, Soy Beans, Peanuts,
etc. Be sure you state for what crop
you want your culture. All Legumes should by all means be inocula-
ted before they are planted. The difference between an inoculated
field and one that has not been inoculated will be seen in the quicker
start it gets, growing off faster, maturing more evenly, and what is not so apparent, in the

W. H. MIXSON SEED CO., CHARLESTON, S. C.

MIXSON S SUPERIOR STRAINS OF PEDIGREED COTTON

For many years we Have specialized on superior strains of pedigreed Cotton. In
fact we have a separate department in our organization which was put in operation
ten years ago solely to handle the production and distribution of our pedigreed
Cotton Seed. To begin with good seed is the backbone of ony crop. To start your
year\,work by planting inferior Cotton Seed is suicide as low quality seed is not
productive. It will not produce a full yield and the the lint will not be uniform and
naturally will not bring the market value which you should receive for your staple.
We have our Cotton Seed production under the management of a man of years of
exeperience in his line. He sees that our growers plant only high grade stock seeds,
that the crops are rogued so that only plants which are true to type are left to pro-
duce planting seed, that the crop is ginned, on private ginneries where only one
variety is ginned, that only the middle crop is saved for seed purposes and that after
ginning the seed are properly cared for and sacked. All of this is in the interest of
supplying our patrons with seed which will produce bumper crops and more profit per
acre.

Our customers are numbered by the thousands residing in every Cotton growing
State of the Union and in foreign countries. We have the right seed, our prices
are right, and we have the facilities for handling your orders quickly and efficiently.
To those who have been our customers we solicit a continuance of your patronage
and we also will appreciate the inquiries and orders of all others who may be)
interested in HIGH GRADE COTTON SEED.
