THE

FORMAL
PLAN

A simple and pleas¬
ing way to arrange the
rear yard.

The border plantings folloiv
the boundaries in straight lines
and are bright with flowering
plants. A trimmed hedge is very
suitably used along one side.

THE BACKWARD BECOMES THE "OUTDOOR LIVING ROOM"

The back-yard was once a neglected and often unsightly part of the grounds. Today this
back-yard is no longer wasted but is improved and beautified so that it adds greatly to the

d enjoyments of the household — it becomes the family’s "Outdoor Living Room.’

that invites use and gives healthful
recreation in the out-of-doors.

PLANTINGS BRING PRIVACY

To encourage use and enjoyment the yard should have seclusion from the public and this
needed privacy is gained through suitable plantings placed along the boundary lines of the lot.
An open, central lawn area, banked in and protected by a colorful border of shrubs, evergreens
and flowering plants creates a yard

the modern yard.

BUILD AND PLANT A ROCK GARDEN

A rock garden will add a new interest and
enjoyment to your yard

While a rock garden will fit in particularly well
with a slope or terrace yet it can be successfully
built on a level piece of ground. Select as a site
a sunny spot toward a corner of the yard where
the rockery can be given a “setting” of its own.
A suitable background is very important and for
this a group of evergreens or shrubs will prove
very desirable.

Simple Construction is Best

Keep in mind that the purpose of a rockery is to
provide a place in which to grow alpine and
rock-loving plants and not to display a mass of
stone. A low arrangement of horizontally-placed
stones with plenty of soil pockets between for
the plants is the best. The effect will be better
with too few stones rather than with too many.

FLOWERING SHRUBS

Hardy Varieties for Northern Gardens

A, /UCH of the beauty in the landscape planting of any home is supplied by shrubs. Their uses are many and
' * t their cost is nominal. It is the softening grace of such shrubs as Spiraea (in variety), Snowberry, Hydrangea,
Barberry and others of like nature used about the angles and corners of the house, which makes the transformation
from bareness to beauty. The taller shrubs, such as Lilacs, Honeysuckles, Mockorange, etc., find their proper
place in the border along the boundary or in plantings which serve to screen out unattractive views. In fact
there is a place where most every type of shrub can be effectively used and by choosing carefully it is possible
to have practically continuous bloom in the shrub border. A few of the colored twig sorts will liven up the
planting in winter.

The figures following the shrub name
show the approximate height to which
the plant will grow.

1932 IS GEORGE WASHINGTON BI-CENTENNIAL— PLANT A TREE AS A MEMORIAL

This year our nation observes the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Washington. The planting of trees as memorials
by civic organizations on public grounds and by individuals in their home yards is a fitting way to permanently honor the memory
of Washington. Plant at least one tree in 1932 dedicated to the "Father of Our Country” and urge others to do so also.

We will help you select suitable varieties, suggest the location and give careful planting directions.

HARDY HEDGES

For Ornament and Protection

A HEDGE planting will bring privacy and seclusion to your grounds. It makes an ornamental wall-of-green
along the lot boundaries to protect your property, takes up very little room, yet has none of the objection¬
able features of a fence. Year by year a hedge grows into greater beauty and usefulness.

Our hedge plants are grown with full-branched, bushy development to give immediate results.

SUGGESTIONS FOR ROSE CULTURE

TIME TO PLANT — Spring planting is the safest in our section. Our potted plants can be planted as soon as danger of
heavy frost is past, about May 15, and from then on throughout the entire summer. Dormant stock should be planted in early
spring.

LOCATION — Roses require a good warm location where they will get plenty of sunlight,- near large trees they suffer
from shade and from the roots and never do well. They will grow in any rich soil.
