HENDERSON’S BOTANICAL GARDENS
PRICE LIST
OF
Henderson's Native Flowering
and Medicinal Plants
A WORD TO THE PROSPECTIVE CUSTOMER
In the purchasing of native flowering and medicinal plants one
cannot safely exercise the simple procedure that is followed in the
purchasing of dry goods or groceries. In the case of goods from
the store, one may see them, feel them, and, in short, 'examine them
until entirely satisfied that the goods in hand are the ones that are
wanted. Again, if you purchase goods from a mail order house and it
happens that they are not exactly what you wished, you are, neverthe¬
less, but little inconvenienced in exchanging them, or it may be that
they will “answer the purpose.” But when you purchase nursery
stock you want exactly what you order. A substitute will not “answer
the purpose.” As you cannot, usually, examine the stock personally
you have to rely on the integrity of the man that you are buying from.
Here is where you may exercise caution. Select a nurseryman who
knows plants, who has them, and who will supply you with what you
want, or, if he has exhausted his supply of the item requested, will
refund every cent of your money.
When you order Ginseng, you want Ginseng and not Turkey Pea
(Erigenia bulbosa), a plant that rather closely resembles Ginseng. In
the case of ornamental plants (many plants in the following list are
both ornamental and medicinal) you want exactly what you order be-

cause that certain plant will fit the site you have for it as no other
plant can. In ornamental planting every plant has its place. The pur¬
chaser may have space for just a few choice plants, plants that he
may not even know but because he has heard them praised he desires
some for himself. In the event an unscrupulous nurseryman sells him
other than that ordered he loses both time and money because a year
or more may pass before he can be sure that he has been defrauded.
So, first, select a man who knows plants. Occasionally a nurseryman
inadvertently tricks his customers through ignorance of the correct
names of the plants that he professes to know. Therefore, be careful
to select a man who will supply the plants you call for.
Why have I written the foregoing? Why! Precisely because I am
going to introduce you to a nurseryman who adheres strictly to the
square deal policy that is advocated in the paragraph above. That
man is myself, Henderson, a name that since 1908 has meant much to
the grower of native flowers and medicinal plants, a name that for
over twenty years has been synonymous with quality plants. Many of
you who read this list have handled my nursery stock but to the many
who have not, to the many who hesitate to purchase native and medicin¬
al plants that they have wanted for years, I would say — try Hender¬
son. Why? Because you will get what you order or your money will
be refunded. Moreover, any one desiring to select from the following
list those plants most suitable for decorative planting will find me en¬
tirely willing to co-operate. From several years experience I have
learned what the majority desire in the way of native plants for rock
gardens, pool and bog sites, etc., so for the convenience of those desir¬
ing such plants I have appended a list of those most suitable for each
location. Any information, cultural instructions, etc., requested, is
given free. Large orders are insured; I pa> the transportation charges
in the U. S., and a certificate of inspection accompanies all orders. No
orders filled in winter or mid-summer but I advise inquirers to query
as early as possible prior to the season that they may wish to order.
Let me repeat, if you have hesitated about buying native flowering
or medicinal plants you need hesitate no longer. Duplicate my prices
— if you can — but give me a trial and let me convince you that I have
quality in addition to rock-bottom prices — and remember that you get
exactly what you call for!

I am often in a position to furnish seed of some of the plants listed
in dozen, 100, and 1,000 lots, but this is the exception rather than the
rule. However, I supply seed only of the following list of plants. Or¬
ders for seed should be placed in winter or early spring for later de¬
livery. All seed are fresh, none are held over, therefore, if the crop is
short, the supply will be limited. Order early!
I can also supply seed of a number of species of dicidious trees. In¬
quire about any that you may have in mind.
Write for prices on 1, 2, and 3 year old Ginseng plants and seed;
also, first and second grade Golden Seal plants and seed.

I hope to offer you more new and interesting plants each season.
Meanwhile, permit me to supply you with the old reliables, flowering
and medicinal plants that have stood the test of time and that you
know are hard to equal. Plants are guaranteed to reach you in number
one condition and you may rely on full count.
Remit by money order or check. Certainly, checks are acceptable. I
shall always believe that those who love the out-of-doors are few and
far between among the many who swerve from the straight and nar¬
row.
Thanks for the interest shown by your present inquiry. One order
will convince you of the truth of all that I have said. May I have your
