The  plants  in  this  list  may  be  seen  growing 
at  our  Coombe  Wood  Nursery,  Kingston  Hill, 
where  visitors  will  be  welcome  on  all  week  days 
except  Bank-holidays. 

The  nearest  Railway  Station  is  Norbiton,  on 
the  Kingston  branch  of  the  London  and  South 
Western  Railway,  but  the  Nurseries  may  also  be 
reached  from  Kingston  and  Surbiton  stations, 
the  latter  being  on  the  same  Company's  Main 
Line. 

Cabs  are  always  in  waiting  at  all  three 
Stations.  Trams  run  from  Surbiton  to  within 
ten  minutes’  walk  of  the  Nursery. 

Our  very  complete  collection  of  Hardy  Orna- 
mental Trees  and  Shrubs,  both  flowering  and

BERBERIS  BREVIPANICULATA

Each 


A deciduous  species  of  upright  growth  forming  a dense  bush  4 to  6 feet 
high.  Leaves  deep  green,  obovate,  in  clusters  of  4 to  7 each,  stems 
bright  red,  flowers  pale  yellow  giving  place  to  panicles  of  bright  rosy 
red  berries  in  Autumn.  See  illustration p.  3 5/- 


DAPHNE  RETUSA

A dwarf  evergreen  shrub  of  compact  and  shapely  habit,  well 
furnished  with  shining  dark  olive  green  oblong-lanceolate  leaves. 

The  sweetly  fragrant  flowers  are  white  shaded  with  rosy  violet  and 
borne  in  dense  terminal  umbels  during  May.  See  illustration  p.  5 10/6

DEUTZIA  VEITCHII 

This  is  the  best  of  the  Chinese  Deutzias  introduced  by  Mr.  E.  H. 
Wilson,  being  deeper  coloured  and  larger  flowered  than  D.  lougifolia. 

The  flowers  are  bright  rose  shaded  with  rosy  purple  and  borne  in 
corymbs  along  the  arching  growths.  Of  not  too  rampant  growth  it  is 
a splendid  addition  to  our  May-flowering  deciduous  shrubs.  Award 
of  Merit  from  the  Royal  Horticultural  Society.  See  illustration  p.  6 5/- 


DEUTZIA  WILSONII 

A vigorous  growing  species  the  flowers  of  which  are  individually  very 
large,  pure  white  and  freely  produced  on  the  ripened  wood  of  the 
previous  season’s  growth.  Leaves  coriaceous  elliptic-lanceolate,  margin 
serrate.  First  flowered  at  Coombe  Wood  in  May,  1905.  A very 
handsome  specimen  plant.  See  illustration p.  8 5/- 


ILEX  VEITCHII 

A new  species  that  is  best  described  as  a large  leaved  and  stronger 
growing  form  of  I.  Pernyi.  The  rigid  growths,  densely  clothed  with 
very  spiny  leaves,  form  a compact  evergreen  suitable  as  a specimen  for 
a lawn.  It  is  exceptionally  hardy  for  exposed  positions  7/6 


OSMANTHUS  ARMATUS 

An  evergreen  shrub  of  slow  growth.  Leaves  oblong-lanceolate  4 to  6 
inches  long,  \\  inches  broad,  very  coarsely  toothed.  The  young  foliage 
is  bronze  green  which  contrasts  with  the  deep  green  of  the  mature 
leaves.  Flowers  cream  white,  fragrant,  produced  in  Autumn  7/6 


PRIMULA  PULVERULENTA.  Var.  Mrs.  R.  V.  Berkeley. 

In  habit  of  growth  and  hardiness  the  variety  now  offered  is  identical 
with  P.  pulverulenta.  Flowers  cream-white  with  rich  orange  eye, 
borne  in  whorls  on  white  mealy  stems,  2 to  3 feet  high.  A fine 
contrast  to  the  now  well-known  crimson  species.  See  illustration  p.  11  7/6

SPIRAEA  VEITCHII 

A particularly  handsome  deciduous  species  that  forms  a compact  shrub 
with  thin  growths  6 to  8 feet  long,  reddish  brown  in  colour  and  clothed 
with  glaucous  green  oblong  lanceolate  leaves.  Terminal  corymbs  of 
pure  white  flowers  are  borne  thickly  along  the  whole  length  of  the 
previous  season’s  growth  on  short  lateral  branches,  and  present  in  the 
mass  during  July  a very  striking  effect.  It  is  the  finest  of  the  Chinese 
spiraeas.  Award  of  Merit  from  the  Royal  Horticultural  Society.  See

VIBURNUM  DAVIDII 

A fine  evergreen  species  of  neat  dwarf  habit  and  well  furnished  with 
ovate  leaves  4 to  6 inches  long,  2 inches  broad,  strongly  nerved. 
Flowers  white,  in  dense  corymbs,  followed  by  small  oval  blue  fruits. 
Suitable  as  a specimen  for  an  isolated  position.  Award  of  Merit  from

NEW  HARDY  CHINESE  PLANTS  OF 
BOTANICAL  INTEREST. 

AUTUMN,  1912. 


ACER  DAVIDII 

A deciduous  tree  which  will  attain  the  height  of  20  to  30  feet,  leaves 
ovate-acuminate,  dentate,  at  first  of  a reddish  bronze  tint,  becoming  on 
maturity  a shining  green  with  lighter  veins.  The  blackish-green  bark 
throughout  the*  entire  tree  is  striated  with  pure  white,  and  is  very 
attractive 

ACER  GRISEUM 

A deciduous  species  attaining  a height  of  15  to  25  feet.  The  young 
growths  and  leaf  stalks  are  rosy  red,  leaves  trifoliate,  leaflets  ovate- 
acuminate,  coarsely  dentate.  The  pale  chestnut  brown  bark  peels  off 
in  broad  flakes  during  autumn  similar  to  that  of  the  Silver  Birch 

ACTINIDIA  CHINENSIS  FOEMINA 

The  female  form,  the  flowers  of  which  are  deeper  coloured  than  the 
male.  In  all  other  particulars  and  in  habit  of  growth  it  is  similar  to 
the  now  well-known  male  form.  A handsome  deciduous  climber 

BERBERIS  DICTYOPHYLLA 

The  small  obovate  serrate  leaves  of  this  new  species  are  borne  in 
clusters  of  4 to  6 each,  on  very  rigid  upright  growths,  the  young  stems 
of  which,  being  whitish  grey,  stand  out  prominently  against  the  dark 
green  foliage.  Coral  red  fruits  in  autumn 

CLEMATIS  AKEBIOIDES 

A deciduous  climber  of  fairly  strong  growth,  leaves  pale  green, 
trifoliate,  leaflets  trifid,  margin  coarsely  serrate,  flowers  small,  pale 
yellow 

CLEMATIS  GOURI  AN  A 

A deciduous  climber,  producing  dense  clusters  of  small  fragrant 
cream-yellow  flowers  during  August  and  September.  Compound 
leaves  composed  of  five  petioled  leaflets.  Suitable  for  a pergola 

ELEUTHEROCOCOUS  HENRYI 

A deciduous  shrub  densely  furnished  with  five-foliate  leaves  of  a pale 
olive-green  hue.  The  grey  stems  are  very  spiny  and  are  terminated  by 
globular  heads  of  flowers  followed  by  purple-black  fruits.  The  root 
bark  is  made  use  of  by  the  Chinese  as  a drug 

EUONYMUS  SANGUINEA 

A small  deciduous  tree  of  good  branching  habit.  Leaves  deep  green 
ovate-acuminate,  finely  serrate,  2 to  3 in.  long.  The  colour  effect  in 
autumn  is  particularly  pleasing,  as  the  foliage  assumes  a purplish- 
crimson  tint  a long  time  before  falling 

HYDRANGEA  ASPERA 

A deciduous  shrub  2 to  3 feet  high,  with  large,  rough  ovate  leaves,  six 
inches  long,  margin  finely  serrate.  The  roundish  corymbs  of  pale 
mauve  flowers  are  borne  very  freely  during  August,  only  the  outer 
row  being  sterile

A strong  growing  deciduous  species,  4 to  6 feet  high,  with  flat  corym- 
bose heads  of  cream-white  flowers  in  August,  the  outer  ones  being 
sterile.  Leaves  dark  green,  broadly  ovate-acuminate,  margin  serrate  3/6 

LONICERA  HENRY! 

A free-growing  evergreen  climber,  leaves  very  deep  green,  oblong- 
lanceolate,  acuminate.  Flowers  small,  chocolate  and  orange  coloured 
superseded  by  bluish  purple  fruits.  Suitable  for  a pergola  or  porch  2/6

LONICERA  PROSTRATA 

The  quick  growing  scandent  habit  of  this  deciduous  species  recom- 
mends it  as  especially  suitable  for  covering  banks,  etc.  Leaves  ovate, 
which  on  the  young  growth  are  a very  bright  green.  Small  pale  cream 
flowers  in  July  2/6 

RUBUS  HENRYI 

An  evergreen  species  of  neat  trailing  growth.  Leaves  deep  shining 
green,  deeply  trifid,  margin  serrate.  Suitable  for  pergolas  and  could  be 
planted  as  a companion  to  R.  bambusarum,  which  it  resembles  in 
many  respects  2/6 

RUBUS  SWINHOEI 

A very  strong  growing  semi-evergreen  bramble.  Leaves  simple, 
ovate-lanceolate,  margin  dentate,  borne  on  graceful  arching  growths 
12  to  14  feet  in  length  the  stems  of  which  are  purplish  grey  2/6

BERBERIS  GAGNEPAINII 

An  elegant  evergreen  Barberry  of  compact  growth,  flowering  freely 
during  June  in  this  country.  The  pale  yellow  flowers  are  succeeded

COTONEASTER  ACUTIFOLIA 

This  is  the  true  species.  The  plant  now  in  cultivation  under  this  name 
is  not  true.  A deciduous  shrub  with  dark  glossy  green  ovate  leaves.

A free-growing  deciduous  species  with  ovate  leaves,  particularly 
suitable  for  covering  a wall  1 /6 

DECAISNEA  FARGESII 

A deciduous  tree  with  handsome  pinnate  leaves  about  one  foot  in 
length.  The  flowers  are  greenish-yellow,  but  its  chief  value  as  an 
ornamental  tree  is  due  to  its  beautiful  foliage  and  to  the  blue  colour  of 
its  curious  hanging  fruits  51-

A quick  growing  deciduous  shrub  of  neat  appearance.  Particularly

A remarkable  feature  of  this  new  herbaceous  perennial  is  the  pro-

POPULUS  LASIOCARPA 

The  ovate  cordate  leaves  of  this  new  Poplar  are  extremely  large  and 
attractive,  measuring  10  to  12  inches  in  width.  They  are  bright  green 
in  colour,  whilst  the  petiole,  midrib  and  principal  veins  are  of  a rich

YITJS  SINENSIS 

A species  with  very  variable  bright  green  leaves,  some  simple  broadly 
ovate,  more  or  less  trifid,  whilst  others  are  cut  into  3 or  5 distinct 
leaflets.  Suitable  for  Pergolas  2/6

CYTISUS  DALLIMOREI 

This  hybrid,  between  0.  albus  and  0.  scoparius  Andreanus  was  raised 
and  first  flowered  in  the  Royal  Gardens,  Kew.  It  was  named  in 
compliment  to  Mr.  Dallimore  who  then  had  charge  of  the  Arboretum. 
The  colour  of  the  flowers  is  pale  rose  shaded  with  mauve,  and  they  are 
very  freely  produced  in  May  and  June.  The  plant  is  a strong  grower 
and  has  a good  branching  habit  developing  into  a dense  twiggy  bush, 
covered  with  small  trifoliate  leaves,  suitable  as  a specimen  or  for  a 
massed  bed.  It  was  granted  an  Award  of  Merit  by  the  Royal 
Horticultural  Society  at  the  Temple  Show  of  1910,  when  the  unique 
colour  of  the  flowers  attracted  much  attention,  and  we  recommend  it 
as  a fine  addition  to  the  summer  flowering-shrubs
