> TARTARY BUCKWHEAT
(Fagopyrum tataricum) Favorite Food of Pheasants,
Grouse and Quail. PLANTING SEASON June and July.
Allow 60. deys before heavy frost. Sow like

Fisheries and Game, and Conn. State University, Game
Dept. and others, ‘Tartary Buckwheat is as different
from common buckwheat as popcorn is from sweet corn,
Will grow on poor sandy soils, sweet or sour -«+ it is
not particular -= or will grow on good soils. It
likes a cool climate as found in the northem States
or in higher elevations and mountainous regions in the
south. Stands above the snow and holds its grain in
winter when the birds need it sorely. It has a hard
seed coat so does not rot when lying on the ground,
If you drag or harrow the ground each spring it will
keep on growing for several years.

PW as well as Ducks and Geese when grown near water. Likes moist low-

PHEASANT BERRY -= Introduced from Burope. A shrubby,
hardy, perennial vine having numerous red berries of which Pheasants
are very fond, as shown by food studies by Massachusetts Dept. of Cone
servation and others. Also used as food by Ducks.
A truly remarkable plant -- grows on moist ground, poor dry ground, in
shallow water, in almost any soil or in almost no soil at all. Very
hardy. PLANTING SEASON: Spring, Summer and Fall. Limited Supply.
