Rule of Thumb for Planting Bulbs
When in doubt as to how deep to plant bulbs, use
the old ‘“Rule-of-Thumb” and plant them “three
times their thickness.” Thus a bulb that measures
an inch from top to bottom should be covered with
3 inches of soil.
La TERR A Peet Oe eS LULIPS
Our bulbs are grown by one of the very best producers
in Holland, and every year we receive many compliments
on the quality of our bulbs.
In addition to First Size (11/12 cm.) bulbs for outdoor
use, we offer Top Size (12 cm. and larger) for indoor
forcing of certain varieties. Orders for the larger bulbs
must be placed in advance of shipping time, say before
August 1st, as we will not carry a surplus stock of them
for late orders. Where an asterisk (*) appears before
the name, the variety is suitable for forcing.
Tulips should be planted outdoors 5 to 6 inches deep,
and about 5 inches apart. Avoid areas where Tulips have
been grown during the previous two years, and do not use
fresh manure.
Indoors, bulbs may be transferred to pots after two or
three months in outdoor beds, when well rooted. Keep in
a cool room before bringing them into ordinary house
temperature.
SINGLE EARLY
These bloom about a week before the regular varieties
and last until the others are in bloom. The flowers are
bright colored, on stems up to 15 inches tall, which means
that they are a little shorter than the so-called late Tulips.
DOUBLE EARLY
These are regaining their former
popularity, as the flowers, which are
double and somewhat resemble
Peonies, are most attractive. They
bloom just ahead of the Darwins, Triumphs, etc., on stems
about a foot tall and will make an interesting addition
to any rock garden, besides looking equally fine in beds.
DOUBLE LATE
These resemble Double Earlies, except that they bloom
with the later Tulips and have long stems. No planting is
complete without some Doubles.
PARROTS
These are sometimes called
Orchid Tulips. They have bril-
liantly colored, irregularly shaped
flowers which are fringed, deeply
cut, and frequently splotched
with green. These newer varieties
have good stems. Fantasy has
been a popular Parrot for years.
3
DARWINS
Darwin Tulips gained great popularity when they were
first introduced, because of their tall strong stems, attractive
colors and perfectly shaped blossoms. They follow the
Single Earlies in blooming time and, in common with other
Tulips, are at their best when massed in beds. They average
20-30 inches tall, depending on climate, weather and
locality.
COTTAGE
Also called May-Flowering, these are a trifle later than
Darwins and have sturdy, tall stems. The color range is
narrow, as they are mostly whites and yellows.
TRIUMPH
Triumph Tulips resulted from crossing Single Earlies
with Darwins, and they deserve even greater popularity
than they have received. They are medium tall, with very
strong stems and attractive colors and combinations of
colors. Excellent for forcing.
BREEDER
These bloom a trifle later than Darwins, also have tall
stems, but they come in a totally different range of colors
which includes buffs, bronzes, purple-bronze, gold, terra
cotta, etc., frequently blended. The “Indian” group we list
are new types of Breeders which should appeal to the more
advanced and particular lover of Tulips.
INDIAN
As mentioned above, these are actually Breeders, but are
considered sufficiently distinctive to warrant special mention.
Those of your customers who really like tulips will welcome
these new colors.
(See “Botanical Tulips” on page 7.)

DAFFODILS
For outdoor use, plant the bulbs as early as possible in
the Fall, 6 to 7 inches deep and 6 to 9 inches apart. In-
doors, treat them the same as Tulips, but barely cover the
bulbs with soil, and water copiously.
We offer two sizes of bulbs, Double Nose II (DN II)
for outdoor use, and the larger Double Nose I (DN 1) for
forcing. The larger bulbs will be supplied only on early
orders, as we will not carry a surplus stock of them. Where
an asterisk (*) appears before the name, the variety is
suitable for forcing.
These are commonly called Daffodils, but botanically
they are Narcissi, and include a number of types or classes
as described briefly below. They bloom early and. long,
making them ideal for beds, borders or naturalizing. The
part which grows from the center of the flower is called
a trumpet when it is long, a crown or cup when medium
size, and an eye when very small.
TRUMPET. This type of Nar-
cissi has trumpets which are as long
as or longer than the perianth
petals. The stems are strong and
more than a foot tall. Trumpet Nar-
cissi may be yellow, white or bi-color.
INCOMPARABILIS. In this class, the trumpet or crown
is medium in length, one-third to the full length of the
perianth. The range of colors in-
cludes yellow and orange crowns,
yellow and white perianths.
BARRII. Another class with me-
dium length cup which is less than
one-third the length of the perianth.
Included in this group are some of
the deepest red cupped varieties.
in clusters on tall, strong stems.
They are pleasantly scented and have
a small cup or eye. Cheerfulness is
a double-flowered Poetaz of out-
standing beauty.
DOUBLE. Double flowered
Narcissi or Daffodils have showy
flowers, some with all yellow
petals and some of two colors.
POETICUS. Called the Poet’s
Daffodil, this group has white
perianths and a small, flattened
crown or eye that may be lemon
or yellow edged with crimson or
scarlet. Poeticus do well in par-
tial shade and make fine cut
flowers.
JONQUILLA. We list but one, Trevithian, a Jonquil
hybrid with small, delicately scented short-crowned flowers,
lemon-yellow throughout. Two or more blooms appear
on a stem.
TRIANDRUS. Thalia is a Triandrus hybrid, with white
blossoms in clusters of two or three. It is fine for rock
gardens or naturalizing.
Ye (¢2. 9.92 Ar. 7S HYAGINERS
We offer high quality bulbs in an excellent range of
colors, and in two. sizes — Exhibition or First Size
(18-19 cm.) and Bedding Size (15-16 cm.).
The smaller bulbs are better for
outdoor use, as the spikes are then
not too heavy and are less apt to
bend or break.
For outdoor bedding, plant the
bulbs 7 inches deep and 6 inches
apart. In northern United States and
Canada they should have some pro-
tection in Winter.

v
Ctocuses are usually planted
in borders, or in random patches
about the lawn, 4 inches deep,
where they bloom very early and
are unharmed by later mowings.
Indoors they may be grown in
light soil. Water them well and
keep them in a dark place about
six weeks or until the top growth
has become 2 inches tall.

(Tulipa Species)
All so-called Botanical Tulips (Tulipa species) ate natives
of Asia Minor and central Asia. All of them bloom early,
have bright colors and recurved petals. They tolerate shade
better than Tulips and are especially attractive in rock gar-
dens and hardy borders. Red Emperor is especially recom-
mended.

CAMPANULATA. About 15

GOLD SEAL
HIGHEST
QUALITY }
Lawn Seed Mixtures
TURF-MAKER 1 —
Composed of Bluegrass, Bent and Redtop — all seeds
highly refined to produce one of the highest quality lawn
seed mixtures available.
Turf-Maker 1 — will develop a beautiful, durable turf
of fine leafed even-textured grass.
TURF-MAKER 38 —
This is another top-quality mixture similar to Turf-
Maker 1 —, with Red Fescue added.
It is particularly suited for New England conditions —
or where soils are somewhat thin and sandy. This suit-
ability is due to the heavy and penetrating root structure
of Red Fescue which enables it to survive with a minimum
of moisttife.
TRU-SHADE
Wherever shade makes difficult growing conditions,
Tru-Shade is the mixture which we recommend as best
suited to overcome this problem. It is composed entirely
of shade tolerant grasses with Redtop as a nurse. These
are Creeping Red Fescue, Chewings Fescue, and Rough
Bluegrass.
