UNITED

GREETINGS,

Again it is my pleasure to extend my thanks and best wishes to my many
customers and friends for the nice orders received the past year.

And to thank you for the many cards and letters commenting us on the
high quality and the splendid results obtained from our bulbs.

Also for the nice comments on our catalog. I may say here that this
catalog is made here in our home. Each member of the family has a part
in making it up, The Glad on the front cover was hand drawn by our
oldest daughter (Rita). My wife Se the addressing which takes her
about two days.

I have had much pleasure in HoEtine many of you folks at the Gladiolus
shows and here at our gardens this past summer. You are always welcome
to visit our gardens at any time. We live 3 miles South East of Blooming«
ton, Dll. We have directional signg on U.S. route 51 1 Mile South and

on U.S. route 150 13Mile South East of Bloomington, Ill.

We planted a large no. of seedlings again this year but was a very bad
season to test them but we did have some very nice blooms from them.

One that we have been growing under seedling no. 10-9 was showen at
LeRoy, I11. and got the grand champion 3 spike of the show but we are
not going to introduce it as it did'nt prove good enough in ‘the trial
gardens. A beautiful ruffled pure white in the 00 size rated very high
in the trial gardens. we may introduce this one next year if it continues.
And many others that’ we are going to grow for further trial, like

To you folks getting this catalog for the first time I would'to say a
few words about our method of growing our bulbs. We are very careful in
selecting propagating stock we never save a bulb or bulblets from an
inferior plant these are discarded as soon as detected during the growing
season. Our bulbs are all grown from bulblets or small planting stock
and planted on clean soil that has not had Gladiolus planted on it for
atlest 5 years we use fertilizers very sparingly and water only when |
needed . The results is a very good crop of high quality bulbs that
should give you very outstanding results. Our bulbs are planted, dug, washed
and cleaned by hand and treated with eat & D.D.1. we do not use gases

or heated air on our bulbs.

OUR GUARANTEE we guarantee nee ere or money back I do mean just that
if you are not satisfied return the bulbs and I will cheerfully refund
your money. We guarantee our bulbs true to name and free of injurious
insects and any visible disese. while we have not had any complaints
about our bulbs should you have any please let us know we will, all we
can to satisfi you. ~l- do

WE cannot guarentee the crop you will harvest as there are too many
things beyond our control. Nor can we guarentee all bulbltes to grow.
Some will germinate 100% while others will hardly germinate 25%.

READ THIS BEFORE ORDERING. All orders of $2.00 are Post Paid. Order as
Tisted do not split quanities to make a lower price except when listed
by 12 you may order 6 at half the price of 12. Cash must accompany .
order by personal check, money order,or bank draft.PLEASE DO NOT SEND
STAMPS OR CURRANCY as your order could get lost and we could be blamed
and we don't want this -to happen. We acknoledge your order as sdon as
possiable after receiving it. If you do not receive one in 10 days
write us as maybe we didn't receive the order. All stock is offered sub-
Ject to stock on hand’and prior sale. Our bulbs are all grown here in
Mc/Lean County by us.lWe do not get bulbs from other:growers to fill
your order without your permission. Where bulblets are listed by the
package, it will contain 50 to 100 bulblets depending on variety. We
give good value. Be sure to orderearly. We have good stock of most
varieties Some are bound to be sold out before spring, so to avoid
dissapointment order early. | 7

INSPECTION. Our bulbs are all carefully inspected at. digging time, and
again at cleaning and grading time. They are also inspected in-the field
and storage inspected by an AUTHORIZED STATE INSPECTOR. A certifacate’
of inspection accompanies each order. We fill all orders as received. ~
We place the bulbs in well ventilated bags and set them back with |
your name ,on them. They are again inspected when packed for shipment.
when we,.several orders in one day, we fill the orders with the earli-
est post mark first.

EXTRAS. We always put in some extras for you to try.We appreciate it
very much if you will list a few you would like to try. We will try
and include them if possiable.

PRICES OF BULBS. The price of the bulb has nothing to do with the qual-
ity nor the production, it only means that stocks of lower price vari-~

ieties are larger than the Seon priced varieties.\Je like to keep in
line with the originator on the price of the new ones. But sometimes

we have no way. knowing so we do the best we can. If_we are lower you
winif we are higher we will meet the price of any reliable cataloger.
We are mimographing our catalog again this year. This helps to hold
down expenses and we pass this saving on to you in the price of bulbs
especially in standard varieties. We don't feel a Seer has anything
to do Wit the quality of the by tbs » We send complete culture direct=
lons with each order” by a leaflet prepared by WoRTH AMERICAN GLADIO~
IUS COUNCIL. By following this leaflet you should be able to grow some
very outstanding spikes.

The descriptions on varieties are as we see them in our fields.I am net
eas uine any reflections on no one, if I condemn a variety that doesn't

mean it won't do good for you. It's a known fact that some will do bet.
er in some 4

localities than in others. We try to grow varieties that have as
wide a range in this respect as possiable. I don't list as many
of the new varieties as some catalogers do, but we like to grow

them a year or two, then if ther are not good I do not want to list
them,However we can not grow them all so there maybe others just as
goode We are discarding many of the older sorts this year, therefore
they are not listed. It isn't that they aren't good, but w have to
make room for the many new varieties and our own scedlings. As you _
thumb through this catalog you will notice we have added several new
varicties to our list. We have grown in our own field and all are
very good. I highky recommend them, We don't take in as many of the
shows as we should but, we do’ win our share oe blue ribbons in the
few shows we attend.

BULB SIZES. Gladiolus bulbs are graded in 6 sizes. fee 1 - 14" or
over. now 2 — 14 to 14 in. no.3 -1 to 13 in. no. 4 -3/h to 1 ine
no. 5 -4 to 3/h in. no. 6 — under 4 in. Noe 1 & 2 are large bulbs.
3&h is medium bulbs. 5 & 6 are small bulbs. We ship the larger
size in each class as long as they last. If mcdium bulbs are order-
ed wo ship size nos 3 so if you get two sizcs it means we have run
out. of the larger S1ZCo .

One question I wowr.d like to clear up is so many folks visiting our
ficlds have asked, if we arc connected with some nursery or bulb.
growere [ am happy to say we are not connected with no other nurscry
or bulb grower in.no waye Se

Minatures and Primulinus Gladiolus List. .

Minature and small type Glads are the ones that are used for table set-—
tings, weddings and corsage work. They also have there place on the show
table. When it comes to winning Blue Ribbons at the Glad shows, they win
as many blue ribbons as the larger type Glads. They also have color that
you don't find in the big type ones. Why they are higher in price than the
big ones they aren't grown as plentiful. You'll have to grow a few to app-
reciate them. During the past 2 seasons these minatures were in such a
big demand, I was sold out on some varieties at planting time I only had
bulblets left to plant for myself. So try some this year, it will be well
worth your while. I think you will enjoy how dainty theyare.

ie CLASSIFICATION
First is the name of the variety. then in spain eC is the name of re
originator. Following this is the size and color figures. The last
figures denct the mumber cf growing days required from planting to date
of blooming. The number of days to bloom is figured for large bulbs;
medium bulbs usually require 5-7 days longer to bloom. Because of vari-
ations in climate, the number of days required for a paticular variety
to bloom may vary by several days. However, the listed blooming dates
will give a fair idea of what to expect of a variety.

tells the size and color of the individual floret as grown from large
bulbs. The N.A.G.C. size and color classification is used in our descr-
