MAYTIME, an All-America Selec-
tions winner for 1958, is an F, hybrid
grandiflora in an enchanting shade of
clear, light salmon pink with slightly
deeper veining. The flowers are large,
31%” to 4”, of good substance with just
a slight fringer, freely produced on
vigorous, compact, spreading plants
with an average height of 12 inches
; and spread of 24 to 28 inches. May-

same type but was not ready at the
time the others were entered. The
Petite strain is distinctly different from
any other class of Marigold, being
especially bred to remain dwarf under
conditions where most Marigolds tend
to grow rangy and wild, with late
flowering tendencies. The Petite strain
produces an abundance of very early
blooms with a long blooming period.
Plant habit is compact, 6 inches tall
and 10 inches wide, with flowers borne
in great profusion. Over 50 blooms
per plant in full flower at one time,
have frequently been counted. Makes
an ideal edging plant, in either of the
four strains, because flowers cover the
plants until no foliage is visible. Color
of three strains is indicated by name,
while the Petite Harmony flower is
a beautiful contrasting bicolor. Guard
petals are a rich, deep mahogany with

large tlowers, borne on stiff stems that hold them well
above the foliage. Grown from seed, the plants are
uniform and compact, comparing favorably with the
varieties Riverside and Cardinal Mundelein which are
propagated from cuttings,

While the stems rise well above the foliage, they are
not conspicuous, still are long enough to permit cut-
ting for use in low bowls and'flower arrangements.

How to Cultivate
Chrysanthemums From Seed

If you have a hothouse or frame you
may sow the seed anytime, excepting hot
summer months. The seeds can be sown
as soon as frost is over, but not much
later if you wish to see good flowers the
same year. Sow the seed in pots or flats
or in protected frame. Since the seeds are
small care must be exercised nct to wash
them away. In abcut two or three weeks
the seeds will germinate. When they are
large enough to be transplanted, the
seedlings should be planted in trays or
outdoor and they will come to bloom the
same year

Early Flowering Double Mixed

Starts flowering already in August, mostly
full double, some are semi-double and a few
singles in dozens of different colors. Flowers
from seed the first year often comes 3 inches
across, second year from cuttings often
exceeds 4 in50 seeds $3.00; 25 seeds $2.00

Mandarin

Cosmos A brilliant orange cosmos
with flowers frequently having forty or
more petals, a real innovation in this
class. Even more impressive are the
plants. The heavy, dense cover of foliage
makes it superior to any other variety.
This pleasing foliage is maintained all
through the season, even after plants
have been in bloom a long time. Instead
of the usual sparse open growth of
cosmos, MANDARIN makes a_ luxuriant
garden specimen. Pkt. 25c

FLOWERING KALE. 18 in. Although belong-
ing to the Cabbage or Kale family, this: Flowering
Kale is entirely different as to its appearance. In
young stage its leaves are green just like ordinary
Kale, but in autumn as the season advances remark-

ably beautiful colors begin to appear. The colors
range from white, cream, pink, rose, magenta, etc., on
dark green ground. As the plants grow, the colors be-
come more brilliant. We suggest seed be sown in
July for colorful plants in early September through
October until killed by heavy frosts. Seeds germinate
in 10 days. Pkt., 25c.

Masquerade F, Pansy. Striped, shaded,

GLITTERS \ALEAMERICA’AS "SELECTIONS7

Glitters petunia is an F, hybrid, the
first real red and white bicolored intro-
duction. It grows only 8 inches high,
is nana compacta type, and an excel-
lent and very showy dwarf bedder and
edger. Glitters seems much more uni-
form in its starred or striped red and
white coloring than the blue and white
bicolors and this is a rich Fire Chief
red with contrasting white stripes. Be-
sides being the first and only one of
its coloring, the condensed habit of
growth keeps it neat and striking at all
stages and seasons. Blooms are about
2 inches across Pkt. 50c., 3 pkts. $1.25

Pink Satin
PINK SATIN, F, hybrid multiflora,
plant is globe shaped, dwarf and per-

sistently compact. Flowers are a bril-
liant rose-pink, accentuated by a small
white area deep in the throat of the
bloom. Their color is every bit as
dazzling as Red Satin, and part of
that dazzling effect is due to the solid
mass of blooms that cover the plants.
You can scarcely see the foliage at all
when bloom has reached its peak, and
plants maintain that display week after
week without spliting open. Pkt. 50c

JAPONICA

ZOYSIA

(Japanese Lawn Grass)
CROWDS OUT CRABGRASS

Zoysia japonica, commonly known as Japanese
Lawn Grass, was first introduced into the United
States about 35 years ago from Korea where the
climate approximates that of New York State.

Zoysia japonica is a low growing, sod forming
perennial which if not mowed, will grow to a
height of about 9 inches. It has a broad, some-
what course leaf similar to Red Top, but does
not grow as tall.

Zoysia japonica is the only variety of Zoysia
which is hardy and will grow in the South as well
as in the North. It should never be confused with
Zoysia matrella which is of value only to the
southern end of Florida where it is sold as sod
under the name of Flawn.

It is generally believed that Zoysia japonica will
be of great value for the following reasons:

(1) Its ability to withstand heat, long periods
of drought and extremely cold climates.

(2) Its ability to crowd out Crabgrass as it is
most dominant during the Crabgrass season.

(3) Its ability to provide a green cover during
the summer months when other grasses,
such as Kentucky Blue, turn brown and
ragged. It will also hold its color into the
late fall longer than others.

(4) Its ability to withstand heavy traffic and its
extraordinary healing qualities.

(5) The fact that it is disease free and weed
free. So far none of the known pests have
attacked it. It is immune to Chinch Bugs.

"I ordered 1 1b. Zoysia Japonica last

growth was so slow in developing the
gardener reseeded with common lawn mixture

which soon covered the barren patches.
Despite this, however, those areas which
had the Japonica are today a good healthy
sort of sod easily discernible in the
overall lawn. I will need 25 lbs. more of
Japonica seed for reseeding."

~ct-Seedsmen, Inc.,
Yarren Ste,
ODI 17/9) Nes:

Gentlemen,

You asked to let you know when our Zoysia lawn would to turn
brown

Now, the end of November, it is still a perfect green. Our Zoysia
lawns are the admiration of everyone - they coud not be more
perfect, and the $500 I invested in zoysia seed last Spring is

far cheaper than spending $500 for the usual hundred pounds of
ordinary lawn seed and several hundred bags of fertilizer, and the
labor of app’ying it all, every Fall, not to mention the daily
Sur~er sprinkling of the lawns- something not needed for the Zoysia.

This much I will say-- it just is not practical to sow Zoysia seed
alone to start a lawn. I would say the best plan for a new lawn

is to sow it in the Fell, rather thinly, using mediocre grade of
ordinary seed; let that come up-- you will have a fair quality lawn
next Spring. Then that Vay, as soon as the ground is getting warm,
go in and sow the Zoysia at the rate of 30 lbs. per acre, and rake
it in, to get it down to the ground, and by August you will see it
take a good hold- and by the Fall it will have driven out all the
ordinary grass seed, and you will have a perfect Zoysia lawn.

Very truly yours

sandy soils, for the same reason that camels, not horses, are used in the
desert. - - So, Burnett-Seedsmen have selected the best drouth grass,
namely, Creeping Red Fescue (Illahee strain). Because of it’s tolerance
of drouth, Tllahee is especially adapted to dry, sandy or gravelly soils—
poor or rich. Jllahee Creeping Red Fescue produces a deep rooted sod
that withstands tramping and abuse. It spreads out, carpet-like, by
means of underground rootstocks and overground stems. The grass blades
are rich green, fine, smooth and soft; they stay green when other grasses
brown and sear in Summer. fllahee is disease resistant; stands close
cutting; grows in sun or shade and reaches full maturity in two years.
It grows well with Highland Bent, also included in Burnett-Seedsmen’s
Poorsoil Lawnmiz. Highland Bent’s growth habit somewhat parallels
Illahee Fescue, especially being able to withstand adverse conditions of
climate and low soil fertility. To these two permanent grasses is added
a small percentage of domestic Rye Grass which acts as a nurse crop.
Burnett-Seedsmen’s “Poorsoil Lawnmix” contains 75% Illahee Fescue,
10% Highland Bent and 15% domestic Rye grass, by weight.

Shady Place Lawn Grass Seed Mixture

Certain grasses, like certain flowers, revel and flourish in the shade. By
including sufficient quantities of the shade loving grasses along with com-
modious amounts of the choicest dwarf and creeping grasses, you may be
assured of a successful lawn in the shade. Remember, in shaded situation
where the sun’s rays do not permeate sufficiently to dry the ground, a damp
and acid condition exists It is well to add lime before sowing.

Asters. . (Wilt Resststant )

Need no introduction, but what is Wilt Resistant Aster Seed? It’s a strain
of seed produced from plants that were grown in heavily wilt-infested soil;
It is reasonable to infer that if a strain was able to grow to full maturity
and bear seed, it’s genera or offspring must likewise be immune to wilt.
Don't take chances, sow Wilt Resistant Strain Asters wherever possible.

TEMA DO SEETION? 1957

Dwarf star annual phlox, Twinkle,
in choice mixed colors, makes a delight-
ful bedding and edging subject. Grow-
ing only six inches high, yet having
flowers and heads as large as the old
12 to 18 inch tall type, Twinkle covers
itself with a twinkling mass of star-
shaped flowers. Flower colors are well
balanced and include a high percent-
age of salmon, rose and pink shades. In
fact, the trials showed a much wider
and more attractive color array than
the writer has noticed in any other star
phlox. Pkts. 35¢ 3 pkts. $1.00
