Ceci n'est ni une préface, ni un éloge de M.
AloDzo Ryan. Il s'agit simplement d'expliquer en quel-
ques lignes l'utilité et la valeur de ce volume.

Ces dessins de M. Rj-an résument, sous une forme
on ne peut plus attrayante, l'histoire politique, je dirai
même sociale, des huit dernières années. La grande
lut]te de 1896, l'ascension, le règne et la chute de M.
Tarte, les principaux événements de la carrière de Sir
Wilfrid Laurier, ses décorations, ses voyages en An-
gleterre, les dissensions qui ont éclaté à plusieurs re.
prises parmi les eon.servateurs, tout y est crayonné de
main de maître.

On rencontre ci et là des incursions dans la poli-
tique provinciale et un coup d'oeil sur les affaires mu-
nicipales.

Tous les principaux hommes d'affaires du Canada
ont été caricaturés par M. Eyan, et toujours d'une
mfuiière spirituelle et quelquefois mordante.

Le grand talent de ce jeune dessinateur se révèle
dans l'impartialité et l'indépendance de son crayon.
Quelles que soient la nationalité ou les opinions poli-
tiques du personage, si ses actes prêtent à la critique ou
offrent un côté risible, l'artiste s'en empare et met les
riebrs de son côté, mais avec tant d'esprit, que le cari-
cat«ré lui-même ne peut s'empêcher d'en rire.

Tous ceux qui ont été mêlés aux événements pu-
blics des huits dernières années, ou qui s'y sont intéres-
sés, voudront posséder cet album, unique au Canada.

, Nous prédisons à M. Ryan un énorme succès, et il
le mérite doublement, comme artiste et comme compa-
triote.

The cartoons collected for this book treat chiefly
the political happenings since Sir Wilfrid Laurier,
politely elbowed Sir Charles Tupper into political
oblivion.

With Sir Wilfrid's rise to power, Mr. Alonzo
Ryan the modest parent of thèse sketches began to
accumulate a resonable amount of famé in Montréal as
a cartoonist of no mean ability, and he lias been adding
to it ever since, Mr. Ryan bas had an cxtensive but
mixed audience. As a free lance cartoonist he has
drawn for botli french and english, libéral, conserva-
tive and ludependent papers and this goes to demons-
trate his artistic versatility. It is easy enough to draw
for one paper, but to be with the Government in a
cartoon drawn at 9.15 a. m. and "agin" the Govern-
ment in another executed at 11.30 a. m. the same day
is a différent matter. In spite of thèse Tarte-like
fluctuations from one party to the other Mr. Ryan
has preserved the esteem of both sides, because he has
worked without malice, and has aucceeded in doing
.something that some others bave failed in, namely, to
hit witli a pen instead of a club.

Récent political developements hâve been particu-
larly fruitful for the cartoonist. The Grand Trunk Pa-
cific, Mr. Tarte's spectacular flight or descent from the
Cabinet to the hard earth, and his rebound into the
late ememy's camp, Mr. Blair's equally interesting gym-
nastics, the Tarte vs Monk fight to a finish Mr. Berge-
ron's protracted séries of semi-annual defeats, and do-
zens of other events too numerous to mention, ail of
which Mr. Ryan has treated in his unique and original

atyle.

This book contains on only a few samples of the
arti.st's works during thèse seven or eight years and it
is only fair to say that many good things hâve had ta^

he ommitted through lack of space.
