So many steps to climb, so many hills
to conquer, and this is just to get to your
first class at the ungodly hour of 8 a.m.!
Did you ever notice that no matter where
you go on this campus you either have to
climb up or down a hill or an infinite
number of steps? But, isn't it worth it?
(We think you should sit down to read the
rest of this.) After all the steps we've
climbed and all the mountains we've con-
quered didn't we come out of this institu-
tion having bettered ourselves for com-
pleting this journey? Sure, at times the
mountains seemed too high, the steps too
long, but hung in there determined to
finish what we started. Perhaps, we
gained a little wisdom along the way.
Well, what do you think? Is it worth it to
you? If it is, turn the page and begin your
journey into . . . the Carontawan. Do do
do do, do do do do . . .

Below Left: Where did all of the cars go?

You guessed it, it's MU!

Above: What a view! Below Right: Take a stroll through the park

HOMECOMING - 1988

The day was full of excitement, hope, and laughter. It
was a day of anticipation for many. The Mounties came
out determined to win and win they did. They gave
homecoming that extra special something. We, the Car-
ontawan staff, would like to say congratulations on a job
well done. To her royal highness, Deneida, you repre-
sent the best of Mansfield. To all those who worked hard
to make the 1988 homecoming a success the Car-
ontawan staff would like to say, "good going dudes!"

4 Introduction

BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, let's go

'Mom, can we keep him?"

Above: Deb, are we having fun yet? Below: Lisa takes her final ride as queen.

You do Pinecrest proud.

Here comes the fuzz!

5 Introduction

Does this mean 1 get a 4.0?"

Tackle, the Mountie way!

Introduction 7

8 Introduction

We, the staff of the Car-
ontawan, would like to wish all
the seniors good luck as you
leave Mansfield University. You
started out as a freshman, that
was the year you built up your
leg muscles on these beautiful
hills. Then you moved on to be-
ing sophomores. Ah, yes, step
two, the climb was getting more
difficult. But you made it. Now,
you must remember your junior
year. You were getting closer to
the top step. The climb was diffi-
cult but you could see yourself
three-quarters of the way to
meeting your goal. Now you are
on the top step as seniors. There
is a door, as you know, at the
end of these steps. You will soon
be participating in the gradua-
tion exercises which will open
the door to the world. The next
step you make will take you into
a career or perhaps it will take
you on to graduate study. What-
ever you do, always remember
that you took those first steps
here at ML). Again, good luck
and congratulations.

IDEALS

AS YOU THINK, you travel; and as you love,
you attract. You are today where your thoughts
have brought you;, you will be tomorrow where
your thoughts take you. You can not escape the
result of your thoughts, but you can endure and
learn, can accept and be glad. You will realize the
vision (not the idle wish), of your heart, be it base
or beautiful, or a mixture of both, for you will
always gravitate towards that which you, secretly,
most love. Into your hands will be placed the exact
result of your thoughts; you will receive that
which you earn; no more, no less. Whatever your
present environment may be, you will fall, remain,
or rise with your thoughts, your vision, your ideal.
You will become as small as your controlling
desire; as great as your dominant aspiration

Wow, it is done at last!! I will bet all of you out there were really wondering if you would ever live to see the 1989 CARONTA WAN.
Weil, here it is!!

On a more serious note though, the CARONTAWAN went through many changes this year, including three different Editor-in-
Chiefs and a very small staff. 1 know everyone was getting very impatient waiting for this year's book and I regret that it is not of the
quality I had wished. There is not much you can do with a staff of eight members and three different ideas of how this yearbook should
be done and each idea was started, leaving behind a mass of confusion for me and my staff. But together we worked hard and now
have a finished product of history for you to relive.

However, stay tuned for next year's book. The 1990 CARONTA WAN w\\] be extra special! We have a whole new and different for-
mat with fresh ideas.

Anyway, I would like to extend special congratulations to the Seniors and wish you all the luck and hope for a great future.

I would like to thank my patient, hard working staff, Lonny Frost, Eric Funk, Melissa Nickerson, Sherry Pauls, Brian Harkness, and
Susie Price. Without them and Larry McCulien, of Jostens Publishing and Abe Orlick of Davor Photography, this book would still be
incomplete.

Thanks alot guys!!

Sincerely yours,
Jacqueline D. Frost

SHERRY PAULS

GROUPS AND
ORGANIZATIONS
FACULTY

Being the Co-Editor and Art Editor, you can tell our staff was small, ranging from two to five
members. Even with a small group BIG things are accomplished.

The 1989 Carontawan has been a long and difficult process because of many staff changes (Editor-in-
Chiefs included). But what a project and you are looking at it.

I have watched the Carontawan go through many changes in my three years of working with it. Some
good changes and some better.

The better changes includes someone who cared about getting a job done as best as possible with the
resources available to us. I would like to thank our Editor-in-Chief, Jacqueline Frost for the uncountable
hours she has put into this book. With a smile and encouragement she lead us to our destination.

As Co-Editor, I would usually mess up much of the paperwork, and run to Jackie for help. And
surprising enough after all those hours working together on this book we took time off to exchange wed-
ding vows on December 2, 1989.

So we thank our Editor-in-Chief for hanging in there.

Sincerely yours,
Lonny Frost
