Published in 1764, Walpole’s wild tale of 
evil noblemen, maidens in distress, 
murder and abduction is generally held 
to be the first gothic novel, initiating a 
literary genre which would become 
extremely popular in the later 18th Horace VValpole 
century and early 19" century. Walpole 

is arguably the forerunner of such authors as Ann Radcliffe, 


Bram Stoker, Daphne du Maurier, and Stephen King.
