THE CASTLE OF OTRANTO
Horace Walpole
The Castle of Otranto
by Horace Walpole
Published in 1764, Walpole’s wild tale of
evil noblemen, maidens in distress,
murder and abduction is generally held
to be the first gothic novel, initiating a
literary genre which would become
extremely popular in the later 18th Horace VValpole
century and early 19" century. Walpole
is arguably the forerunner of such authors as Ann Radcliffe,
Bram Stoker, Daphne du Maurier, and Stephen King.
