PREFARATORY REMARKS.

THE present Catalogue is the result of a wish long enter-
tained by me to alter and remedy, on the first opportunity,
the negligent arrangement and generally unsatisfactory
condition of the recent Shells in the Museum of the Asiatic
Society of Bengal, and to introduce a better arrangement
into this important department, without which the collection
can offer but slight attractions to the general visitor, or
instruction to the student, and with the aid and approbation
of the President and Secretary I have prepared for publica-
tion a Catalogue of them, which may assist the student,
without aiming, however, at giving more than brief informa-
tion regarding Distribution, Synonymy, &¢c.—leaving those
desirous of fuller information on the subject to refer to
standard works, :

Whilst hoping that the present Catalogue will meet a want
much felt at present, I trust that the above remarks as to its
scope may divert severe criticism from the shortcomings of
the work either as respects execution or extent.

In the general arrangement of the Catalogue I have
followed the excellent little Manual of Conchology, by
Woodward, but in particular families (Helicide, Cyclostonide,
and Auriculide) I have adhered to the arrangement adopted
by Pfeiffer in his monographs of those families, and from the

latest edition of those works have extracted a table of genera
for the convenience of those who may not have means of
referring to them. The following are the works which I have
mainly consulted in preparing the present Catalogue :
Reeve’s Conchologia Iconica. Woodward's Manual of the
Mollusca; Sowerby’s Thesaurus Conchyliorum; Pfeiffer's
Monographia Heliceorum—Auriculaceorum and Pnewmono-
pomorum ; and the Magazine of Natural History.

The system of using different colors to proclaim the locality
of the species, which had been partially adopted on the col-
lection, has been so far retained that all Marine Shells of the
Indo-Pacific region are mounted on Pink paper, whilst Shells
from all other or unknown localities are mounted on Green.

It is much to be regretted that the donors or authentic
localities of so many shells are unknown* but this last defici-

ency I have, wherepracticable, remedied, by adding the known
or recorded habitat of the species.

Those localities, ‘which appear to have been recorded by
the donors, and from which the specimens seem to have been
obtained, are printed in italics, which is not done with those

* Since penning these remarks, I have come across a Report of the
Section of Natural History signed by Messrs. Grant, Walker, Cantor, and
Laidlay, and published in 1848, which goes far to explain the causes of
the state in which the shell collection was. The details of this Report
are perfectly lamentable and need not be repeated here, but I deem it my
duty as amember of the Section of Natural History to record my very deep
regret at the utter disregard of the views therein enunciated, and at the
continuance down to the present hour of the same vicious, desultory system,

which has brought such rnin on the collections of the Society, and contempt
on its management.

localities referring to the general distribution of the species,
or which have been filled up from other sources.

The authenticity of some of the localities printed in italics,
is very doubtful, but in such cases I have merely given the
locality attached to the specimen, leaving the point to be
cleared up by future enquiry.

A considerable number of the shells in the collection were
named when I undertook their arrangement, but as I have
gone over and verified the name of most of the shells. I
alone am responsible for any errors.in the determination of
species which may hereafter be detected.

Many species are not determined to my own satisfaction,
but such must ever be the case where no means exist for
comparing obscure or doubtful shells with other collections,
and a mere figure and meagre description, (and Reeve’s
descriptions are too often such) are all one’s available

resources.

Many of the shells in the collection are in very poor order,
and others have been more or less injured by want of care,
and the use of wax in mounting them (a plan ill suited for
any shells, specially delicate ones), and the accumulation of
dust in the cases, which in some places was } of an inch
thick. The Rotelle have been entirely stripped of their
beautiful polish by the action of some microscopic confervoid
growth, which a varnish would probably obviate, and this
circumstance, (the liability of highly polished shells to be
deprived of their lustre even in close cases,) should be borne
in mind, and a remedy applied in future.

4

As a closing remark I may here appropriately allude to
the principal donors of Shells to the Museum. From
Dr. Tonnere, the Society has received many interesting
Shells from the Society and Navigators’ Islands. From
Messrs. Asphar and MacLeod, Shells from Penang and
the Bay of Bengal. From Messrs. H. E. Strickland
and Malherbe, Shells from Europe, especially land shells from
the latter. From Messrs. Abbot and Strange, Shells from
Australia; and others from New Zealand from Mr. Hart.
From Mr. Lietard Shells from Mauritius and St. Diego,
(California.) From Mr. E. L. Layard from Ceylon; and
Shells from miscellaneous localities from Mrs. Thomas, Messrs.
Von der Busch, Russel, Huffnagle, Mitchell, Robinson,
Captains Halsted, Hutton, and others whose names may be
miet with in the Catalogue.

No shells differ more among themselves than the four common
species of our Indian Melanie or are more affected by the favorable
conditions or the reverse, of the localities they inhabit. A fine spe-
cimen of M. Variabilis in my own cabinet from Maulmein measures 43
inches allowing an inch for the eroded tip. The ribs are bluntly 5
nodular differing therein from the usual spinous ribs of var a from
Birmah (Tenasserim R.) An ordinary fine Birmese specimen, mea-
sures (when complete) 33, of which one inch is removed by erosion. My
finest specimen of the smooth pointed var from Noung-ben-zeik mea-
sures 25 and has merely lost the apex. This var is rarely much
eroded, and is also found in the Purneah district. M. Tuberculata
presents two marked varieties which deserve notice, viz. a smooth var
and a tuberculate one. The former var is smooth, dark colored, con-
spicuously but finely striated spirally, with few or faint traces of tuber-
cles in any part. My largest specimen measures 1} inches and if
perfect, would be about 14. The other variety is more coarsely striated
and conspicuously tubercularly ribbed. Its color is a yellowish brown
relieved by transverse flame like stripes of reddish brown. A very
large specimen from Bombay measures neatly 14 inches and has fat
about an 3 by erosion, ‘his var is more sharply acuminate than the

other, which is slenderer and tapers more gradually. The ordinary
length of this species is not more than an inch.

M Lirata is a very variable species and seems to thrive best near
the influence of brackish water. The largest variety occurs near
Calcutta, but I have no specimens. The ordinary variety rarely attains
1} and is then rather eroded. The smaller are but little eroded,
and vary form {~ to + in length, among the larger var from some loca-
lities the whorls are more or less turrited. M. Spinulosais less commonly
found in fine condition than the others and often closely approaches
sone vars both of M. Tuberculata and M Lirota. The finest specimens
Thave seen are from Ceylon. ‘This yar has the last or penultimate
whorl ornamented with 5 or 6 conspicuous spines. When the penulti-
mate whorl is so armed the last whorl is smooth the animal resting
satisfied with forming a single row of long spines. Length 1 inch if

perfect but apex a little eroded. ‘The continental specimens are usually
smaller,

T. W. Russel.

A singularly interesting species exhibiting in a very marked degree
the wing like expansion of the valves over the ligament which
is observable in the American U. Alatus. The wing being
formed by a shelly fold, the result of the expansion of either
valve over the ligament, which is as it were rendered internal,
and there being no joint or breach of continuity in the shelly
layer or fold, the extent to which the animal can open its valves
is inconsiderable, and determined by the elasticity of the shelly

wing.
