Registered No.63562

General Post Office, London.
19th February, 1907.

Sir,

With reference to your letter of the 10th of last month,
No. 9, relative to the non-delivery of t-'o parcels addressed to the
Superintendent, Botanic Gardens, British Guiana, I an directed by
the Postmaster General to state that, although five parcels for
the Superintendent, Botanic Gardens, British Guiana, and 34 par-

V

cels for the Director, Botanic Gardens,,Jamaica, were advised on

-

the Parcel Bill of the Mail for London’despatched from Singapore

0 • J'i Pw i l& i

on the 3Cth of August last by way of Brindisi, the records of the

'Ji . h. ' /////' • i - i ; d • . / . t ^ P-p ■ /. ’ .' v ■ ; ' . ’ ,

despatch of the parcels from this country show that 30 parcels
were addressed to Jamaica and only 3 parcels to British Guiana/

As no information has been received from Jamaica to show that any
of the parcels sent to* that Colony were not addressed to it, the .
outward records would appear to be correct; -and, in these circum¬
stances-, the gender's complaint of'the non-delivery of two par-

♦

cels addressed to British Guiana seems to ’rave been made under a
misapprehension.

I "am to express the Postmaster'General 1 s regret that
your Office was not advised, at the time of the receipt of the
Mail referred to, of the discrepancy between the addresses shown
on the parcels in .question and the entries on the relative Parcel
Bill.

Instructions for Packing seeds of Hevea braziliensis
for British Guiana*

The seeds should be collected as soon as possible after they
have fallen, their surface dried, and then packed in closely
fitting tins (1) or light wooden boxes in dr^ (2) charred rice
dust*Not more than six hundred seeds should be packed in each
package which should weigh when full between § and 1® lbs*, in

order that they may be tightly enclosed in light 1 bagging 1
wrapper and forwarded by parcel pest-the maximum weight allowed

for parcels being not over 11 lbs*

The seeds must be sent by parcel post to ensure rapid trans~
portation, and as the time taken to obtain seeds from Singapore

to British Guiana is practically on the limit of vitality of the
seeds,no time should be lost in packing the seeds after they have
been collected, and in shipping them, and to ensure that no delay
shall take place in obtaining delivery in this colony each parcel
should be addressed to the Director,Science & Agriculture Dept,
British Guiana*

(1) Tins must not be hermetically soldered*

(2) Containing not more than S-ft per cent of moisture.
This degree of moisture is best obtained by exposure
to the air for a few days*
