IN MEMORIAM. PIERRE BOURRELLY (1910-1995)
Source : MNHN, Paris
2 A. COUTÉ

IN MEMORIAM 3
grottes d'Israél par I, Friedmann.

logie,...).

IN MEMORIAM 5
On

INTRODUCTION
Just like on earlier occasions (Coesel, 1989, 1993) the preparation of a new
part of the Dutch desmid flora (Coesel, 1982-1994) implies some preceding taxonomic
revisions. This time they deal with the genus Staurastrum, see also Coesel (in press) and
Coesel & Joosten (in press).

TAXONOMY
Staurastrum acutum Bréb. var. badense (Schmidle) comb. nov. (Figs. 3, 4.)
Basionym: S. varians Rac. var. badense Schmidle 1894, p. 554, tab. 28: 16.
S. varians is a rather poorly-known species. The original description in
Raciborski (1885, p. 86, tab. 12: 1) shows both bi-, tri- and quadriradiate cells, in top
view always with convex sides. Var. badense Schmidle, differing from the nominal
variety of S. varians by concave sides in apical view, in my opinion may better be
classed under S. acutum.
So far, in The Netherlands, S. acutum var. badense is only known from the
island of Ameland.
Staurastrum acutum Bréb. var. paxilliferum (G. S. West) comb. nov. (Fig. 2)
Basionym: S. paxilliferum G. S. West 1899, p. 219, tab. 396: 8.
According to the well-known desmid flora by West & West (1912), S.
paxilliferum should be compared with S. granulosum Ralfs, “with which it appears to
have a very close affinity". When doing so, the close affinity in particular appears to
hold for S. granulosum var. acutum (Bréb.) W. & G. S. West, rather than for the
nominal variety of S. granulosum. Whereas S. granulosum var. granulosum in West &
West (1912) is characterized by “obsemicircular” semicells, semicells in var, acutum are
“elliptic-fusiform”, with dorsal and ventral margins which are more equally convex
than in var. granulosum. (sec our Fig. 1). In view of this feature, to my mind, S. acutum
has not to be classified under S. granulosum. On the other hand, the main difference
between S. acutum and S. paxilliferum is in the size of the cell wall granules, these
granules being more or less papilliform, so more pronounced, in S. paxilliferum. This
rather subtle difference in my opinion does not justify discrimination at species level.
So, S. paxilliferum is classified as a variety of S. acutum.
In The Netherlands, S. acutum var. paxilliferum was only encountered in a
number of shallow mesotrophic fen hollows, whereas S. acurum var. acutum is known
from some oligo-mesotrophic moorland pools.
Staurastrum controversum Bréb. ex Ralfs var. semivestitum (W. West) comb. nov.
(Fig. 11)
Basionym: S. vestitum Ralfs var. semivestitum W. West 1892a, p. 732, tab. 9: 38.
When observed in apical view var. semivestitum, with its processes all bent in
one direction and with furcate spines emarginating in particular the convex side of each
process, in essence resembles S. controversum rather than S. vestitum (see Fig. 12 and
Fig. 10, respectively). For that matter, the affinity to S. controversum was also noticed
by West et al. (1923, p. 160).
In The Netherlands, S. controversum (both its nominal variety and var.
semivestitum) was encountered in a number of acid, oligotrophic moorland pools,
mainly in the beginning of this century.
Staurastrum cristatum (Nãg.) Arch. var. cuneatum Hinode ex Coesel (Fig. 13)
Original description: Hinode 1967, p. 77, fig. 3: 6.
Lectotype: ibid., fig. 3: 6.
Although Hinode (loc. cit.) provided just one single figure, so that it cannot
give rise to any confusion as for the identity of the taxon described, he did not

TAXONOMIC NOTES ON DUTCH DESMIDS 21
designate a type (laid down in Art. 37 of 1.C.B.N., Greuter er al., 1994). By indicating
a type herewith, the name in question is formally validated.
In The Netherlands, S. cristatum var. cuneatum is locally not rare in
mesotrophic fen hollows.
Staurastrum cristatum (Näg.) Arch. var. navigiolum (Grónbl.) comb. nov. (Fig. 14)
Basionym: 5. navigiolum Grónblad 1920, p. 71, tab. 3: 95-97.
Grónblad (loc. cit.) compared his taxon with S. pseudobiretum Playf. and S.
papillosum Kirchn. However, in my opinion, its relationship to S. cristatum is obvious
(see also Skuja, 1934, f. 117).
In The Netherlands, this taxon is only known from a mesotrophic pool near
Voorst.
Staurastrum dispar Bréb. var. semicirculare (Wittr.) comb. nov. (Fig. 16)
Basionym: S. hexacerum (Ehr.) ex Wittr. var. semicirculare Wittrock 1872, p. 52, tab.
4:9.
Species concepts of both S. dispar and S. hexacerum are pretty unclear, see
West & West (1912, p. 187, tab. 127: 7) and West et al. (1923, p. 138, tab. 142: 11-14),
respectively. However, when considering the diagnoses of these taxa as given by the
Wests (loc. cit.) S. hexacerum is characterized by semicells that taper towards the angles
to form (very) short processes, dorsal and ventral margins of the semicell body being
about equally convex. In S. dispar, on the other hand, lateral angles are acutely
rounded and the dorsal margin of the semicells is more convex than the ventral one.
In view of these differentiating characteristics, S. hexacerum var. semicirculare
better can be transferred to S. dispar (compare our Fig. 15).
In The Netherlands, S. dispar var. semicirculare is only known from the island
of Ameland, whereas the nominal variety of S. dispar is more widely distributed,
occurring in mesotrophic pools and fen hollows.
Staurastrum furcatum (Ehr. ex Ralfs) Bréb. var. aciculiferum (W. West) comb. nov.
(Figs. 32, 33)
Basionym: S. avicula Bréb. in Ralfs var. aciculiferum W. West 1889, p. 293, tab. 291:
12:
Synonyms: 8. aciculiferum (W. West) Andersson 1890, p. 11, tab. 1: 4. S. spinosum
Bréb. in Ralfs var. aciculiferum (W. West) Péterfi 1973, p. 126.
The close relationship between S. furcatum (synonym: S. spinosum) and S.
aciculiferum was stressed by Péterfi (1973) who figured some intermediate and
dichotypic forms. Since Péterfi (loc. cir.) considered the epithet of spinosum to have
priority over that of furcatum he classified the taxon aciculiferum as a variety of S.
spinosum. However, Compére (1976) adduced arguments in support of the name of S.
furcatum as the correct one. Since we are, like Péterfi, familiar with transitional forms,
T herewith classify S. aciculiferum as a variety under S, furcatum.
In The Netherlands, both the nominal variety of S. furcatum (Fig. 31) and
var. aciculiferum are not rare in acid, oligotrophic moorland pools.
Staurastrum inflexum Bréb. var. brachycerum (Bréb.) comb. nov. (Figs. 6-8)
Basionym: S. brachycerum Brébisson 1856, p. 139, tab. 1: 24.
Brébisson (1856) when describing S. inflexum and S. brachycerum already
stressed the high similarity between these two taxa. To my mind, the differences are

such slight (compare tab. 1: 24 with tab. 1: 25 in Brébisson, 1856, as well as our Fig.
5 with Figs. 6-8) that they do not justify discrimination at species level.
Whereas, in The Netherlands, the nominal variety of S. inflexum is a rather
common taxon in all kinds of shallow fresh waters provided that they are not too acid
or too alkaline; var. brachycerum is only known from the island of Schiermonni-
koog.

1972 (collection no. 72. 132 Amsterdam herbarium).
Distribution: in The Netherlands only known from the type locality (encoun-
tered with zygospores in 1982). Also known (as S. subbrebissonii Schmidle) from the
Auvergne, central France (Kouwets, 1987), Steiermark, Austria (Lenzenweger, 1984),
Hiddensee, northern Germany (Ruzicka, 1972) and Berchtesgaden, southern Germany
(Kaiser, 1924).
S. kouwetsii, usually wrongly labeled as S. subbrebissonii Schmidle (e. g.
Coesel & Kooijman-Van Blokland, 1976), may be mixed up with 5. brebissonii Arch.,
from which it is to be distinguished by stouter spines, positioned in a less dense pattern
(compare Fig. 17).
The species is named after Dr Frans Kouwets, who presented this taxon
(Kouwets, 1987, p. 253, tab. 17: 15-16) as “? S. subbrebissonii Schmidle” adding a
critical consideration of all taxa supposed to be related.
Staurastrum micron W. & G. S. West var. spinulosum var. nov. (Figs. 24, 25)
Var. spinulosum differt a varietate eponymica ornamentatione parietis cellulae

duabus eminentibus spinis. Typus: Fig. 24.
Var. spinulosum differs from the nominal variety by a more spinous cell wall
ornamentation. In apical view, each margin of the semicell body is provided with two
prominent spines.

TAXONOMIC NOTES ON DUTCH DESMIDS 23
The taxon under discussion presumably is identical to the algal form
presented by Taylor (1935, p. 192, tab. 37: 3, 3a) under the name of “S. heimerlianum
Lütkem. f. (7)". In view of its bowl-shaped semicell body it is to be related to S. micron
rather than to S. heimerlianum, the latter species being characterized by fusiform
semicells (see West er a/., 1923, p. 165, tab. 149: 14-16).
In The Netherlands, the nominal variety of S. micron (Fig. 26) is not rare in
oligo-mesotrophic moorland pools. Var. spinulosum, on the other hand, is only known
from a pool near Ommen.
Staurastrum minimum sp. nov. (Figs. 20-23)
Processus exhibent
margines paulo undulatas necnon acumina. minimis dentibus instructa. In microscopo
luminari nulla alia ornamentatio parietis cellulae visibilis est. Cellulae paries magnopere
tenuis est. Dimensiones: cellularum longitudo cum brachiis 17-20 ym, sine brachiis
9-12 yn, cellularum latitudo cum brachiis 18-22 um, isthmi latitudo 3.5-4.5 um. Typus:

processes. Sinus v-shaped. Semicell body cup-shaped. Cells in apical view triradiate, the
semicell body triangular with sides about as long as each of the processes. Processes
with faintly undulating margins and tipped with some minute dents. Light microscop-
ically, no other cell wall ornamentation visible. Cell wall extremely delicate. Dimen-
sions: cell length including processes 17-20 um, cell length exclusive of processes
9-12 um, cell breadth including processes 18-22 jim, breadth of isthmus 3.5-4.5 um,
Type: Fig. 20.
Type locality: oligotrophic pool near Winterswijk, sampled on 04-07-1917
(collection no. H366, Amsterdam herbarium).
Distribution: encountered in a few samples from oligotrophic pools near
Winterswijk, Boxtel and Ommen, collected by Prof. J. Heimans in the period
1917-1918.
The alga illustrated in our Figs. 20-23 is mainly characterized by its minute
cell size in combination with a very delicate cell wall. For this reason it may be
overlooked quite readily. Screening the literature for resembling algal forms only
S. paradoxum forma parva W. West was encountered. The description of this taxon
(as "var. parvum West") in West et al. (1923, p. 106, tab. 145: 6) roughly fits that of
our alga. However, the original description in West (1892b, p. 182, tab. 23: 12) shows
a form distinctly more robust than ours. Apart from this, it is obvious that West's
taxon has nothing to do with S. paradoxum as conceived elsewhere in the present
paper.

lateral angles often slightly produced. Cell wall very faintly undulated, otherwise
smooth, Cells in apical view quadrangular, the angles of one semicell more or less
alternating with those of the other. Semicells with concave margins, the angles broadly
rounded to slightly truncate, sometimes somewhat produced. Dimensions; cell length

"Type locality; Sphagnum-covered spring mire near Brunssum, sampled on
22-08-1974 (collection no. 74.52 Amsterdam herbarium).
Distribution: only known from the type locality where it was still present on
29-09-1990,
With its slightly produced lateral angles the alga under discussion reminds of
S. pachyrhynchum Nordst. However, it lacks the angular cell wall thickenings most
characteristic of the latter species. Moreover, its cell outline is somewhat shivery, not
firm as in S. pachyrhynchum. Actually, there is more resemblance to S, punctulatum
Bréb. in Ralfs, particularly its var. subproductum W. & G. S. West, except for a
complete want of cell wall ornamentation. We checked many tens of cells but none of
these showed any cell wall granules. Both in the 1974 and the 1990 sample S. obscurum
turns out to be a predominant species in an algal assemblage otherwise poor in desmids
(both species and specimens). So it is unlikely that we are dealing with an incidental
reduction form of S. punctulatum.
Staurastrum paradoxum Meyen ex Ralfs (Figs. 43-47)
There is a lot of confusion about the identity of this species. Type material
being absent, Brook (1959a, 1959b, 1959c) proposed to abandon this species.
According to this author (Brook, 1959b) the figures of S. paradoxum in Ralfs (1848,
tab. 23: 8a-f) suggest it to be a reduced form of S. anatinum Cooke & Wills whereas
most of the figures in more recent publications referred to S. paradoxum can be
assigned to other well-defined taxa, like S. chaetoceras (Schród.) G.M. Smith and S.
cingulum (W. & G. S. West) G.M. Smith. No doubt, most of this confusion is brought
about by the well-known manual by West et al. (1923), up to now acting as the only
more or less critical desmid flora covering the genus Staurastrum. Unfortunately, the
figures presented under the name of S. paradoxum (West et al., 1923, tab. 145: 1-10)
obviously refer to a number of different species. Even when considering only the
nominal variety of S. paradoxum (West et al., 1923, tab. 145: 1-5) it is clear that at least
two species are at issue. The one figured in tab. 145: 5 most probably is to be identified
with S. chaetoceras. The figures in tab. 145: 1-4, on the other hand, could be assigned
to S, paradoxum as originally described in Ralfs (Joe. cit.). | disagree with Brook (loc.
cit.) in considering this alga a reduced form of S. anatinum. S. anatinum as well as the
closely related S. vestitum differ from S. paradoxum not only in a more pronounced cell
wall ornamentation but also in a lower cell length : breadth ratio, mainly caused by a
more parallel position of the cell processes (compare Figs. 9 and 10 with Figs. 43-47).
Moreover, there is a difference in ecology, S. paradoxum being encountered in distinctly
acid, dystrophic pools as against S. amatinum and S. vestitum in but slightly acid,
oligo-mesotrophic habitats. So, to my mind S. paradoxum is a well-defined species,
readily to be distinguished from all taxa it has been mixed up.

TAXONOMIC NOTES ON DUTCH DESMIDS 25
Staurastrum paradoxum Meyen ex Ralfs var. reductum var. nov. (Figs. 48-51)
Var. reductum differt a varietate eponymica processibus paene omnino reductis.
Typus: Fig. 51.
Var. reductum differs from the nominal variety by almost completely reduced
processes. This algal form was dealt with by Förster (1970, p. 340, tab. 28: 20) under
the name of S. polymorphum Bréb. var. pygmaeum Grönbl., and also (Förster 1970,
p. 339, tab. 28: 26-27) under the name of S. paradoxum "formae processibus reductis".
Since I have the impression that it does concern a genetically fixed form it is made a
taxon on its own,
Whereas, in The Netherlands, the nominal variety of S. paradoxum is rather
widely distributed in dystrophic pools and peat pits, var. reductum is only known from
some pools near Dwingelo.
Staurastrum simonyi Heimerl var. semicirculare var. nov. (Figs. 27, 28)
Var. semicirculare differt a varietate eponymica semicirculari forma semicel-
Typus: Fig. 28.
Var. semicirculare differs from the nominal variety by a semicircular in stead
of ellipsoid shape of the semicell, and by a reduction in size and number of the spines
at the semicell apex and angles.
This algal form was previously (Coesel & Kooijman-Van Blokland, 1976,
p. 65, fig. le) presented under the name of S. arnelli Boldt var. spiniferum W. & G. S.
West. However, our Figs. 27-28 in combination with Figs. 29-30 show its relationship
to S. simonyi. For morphological variability in S. simonyi, see also Kouwets (1988,
p. 303, tab. 5: 1-12).
In The Netherlands, both the nominal variety of S. simonyi and its var.
semicirculare are not rare in oligotrophic moorland pools.

INTRODUCTION
In recent years many tropical algae have appeared in the Mediterranean.
Three major routes of access into the Mediterranean are the opening of the Suez Canal,
the increase in shipping and the development of aquaculture and public aquariums
(Verlaque, 1994). Some species able to adapt to new environments have become so
widespread that they represent a threat to the structure of benthic communities
(Meinesz & Hesse, 1991; Knoepffler-Peguy et al., 1985).
One of the first tropical species identified in the western Mediterranean was
Acrothamnion preissii (Sonder) Wollaston (Rhodophyta, Ceramiaceae), which seems to
have started its colonization from the coast near Livorno (Cinelli & Sartoni, 1969).
Source : MNHN, Paris
36 L. PIAZZI et al.
Since then it has spread around the Tuscan Archipelago islands (Cinelli et al., 1984;
Pardi et al., 1993) and along the Tuscan (Cinelli & Sartoni, 1970; Cinelli et al., 1984),
Ligurian (Bianchi & Morri, 1993) and French coasts (Boillot et al., 1982; Thélin, 1984;
Verlaque, 1994). Sometimes the alga is so infesting as to modify autochthonous benthic
communities (Salghetti-Drioli er al., 1985). To date, A. preissii biology and ecology
have not been studied in the Mediterranean; this work aims to give a revision of the
distribution of A. preissii along the Tuscan coast and some information on the ecology
and reproductive phenology of this species. In particular, three ecological aspects were
investigated: importance of the kind of substrate for A. preissii development, vertical
distribution and seasonal dynamics, both on hard bottom and Posidonia oceanica (L.)
Delile beds.

MATERIAL AND METHODS
A survey of the Tuscan coast and Tuscan Archipelago was carried out, by
field observation, from 1990 to 1994, to evaluate the diffusion of A. preissi. The study
of ecological aspects and reproductive phenology was carried out around Gorgona
Island (Tuscan Archipelago), where the species has colonized large zones of infralit-
toral bottoms. The hard bottom sampling site was in Cala Maestra, on the northern
side of the island (Fig. 1); six stations were chosen along a transect at 35 m, 25 m,
12 m, 6 m, 3 m and | m deep; records were collected by SCUBA diving, scraping off
surfaces of 400 cm? (Boudouresque, 1971). The samplings on the P. oceanica beds were
done in the eastern part of the island (Fig. 1); ten shoots were collected along a transect
at 25 m, 12 m and 6 m deep. A. preissii abundance was estimated by percentage cover
and quantitative dominance (Boudouresque, 1971). Samplings were repeated in each
season (June, September, December, March) and bimonthly records were collected at
the same depths to evaluate the presence of reproductive structures.

ACROTHAMNION PREISSII IN THE TUSCAN ARCHIPELAGO 39
RESULTS
The comparison between the present study and previous papers (Cinelli et al.,
1984) shows that A. preissii has not extended its area in recent years. At present the
zone colonized by A. preissii includes the Tuscan coast between Livorno and the Gulf
of Follonica and the islands of Gorgona, Capraia and Elba (Fig. 1). Field observations
showed the existence of a zone between Meloria and Vada Shoals (Fig. 1) where A.
preissii is dominant on the infralittoral sea bottom and often forms dense turfs which
cover rocks, other algae and seagrasses (Fig. 2).
The study on the rocky bottom showed the presence of A. preissii along all
transect; the greatest quantitative dominance occurred in September and between 12 m
and 25 m, while it is infrequent at depths shallower than 6 m (Fig. 3). On P. oceanica
shoots A. preissii shows a high quantitative dominance, especially in shallower stations
(Fig. 4), while seagrass leaves are poorly colonized all along the transect and only on
the basal part (Fig. 5).
To date, in the Mediterranean only the tetrasporophytic phase has been
described (Cinelli & Sartoni, 1970; Thélin, 1984); during this survey tetraspores and
gonimoblasts were found; tetraspores (Fig. 6) were present between September and
January on the hard bottom, while gonimoblasts were present in November and
January on P. oceanica shoots (Tab. 1). According to Wollaston’s description (1977),
mature gonimoblast is formed by two lobes, and develops on young pinnae near
branch apices; the structure is protected by pinnae originated from lower axial cells
(Fig. 7).
CONCLUSIONS
From this study it results that A. preissii distribution on the hard bottom is
related to bathymetric gradient, with a greater abundance between 12 m and 25 m,
while on P. oceanica shoots, where the light is reduced by the leaf layer, the
quantitative dominance of the alga is high throughout the transect. According to this
distribution, connected with light intensity, A. preissii seems to be a sciaphilous species.
The absence of A. preissii from the upper part of P. oceanica leaves, also in deeper
stations, seems to show its preference for low hydrodynamism biotopes.
As for its structural characteristics, A. preissii is able to colonize rocky
bottoms, other algae and marine seagrasses, but this study shows that P. oceanica
shoots seem to represent the best substrate for settling and development.
The reproductive structures were found between the end of summer and the
beginning of winter. This period does not coincide with the greatest vegetative growth,
which occurs between June and September. Cinelli et al. (1970) discovered tetraspores
near Leghorn in August, and Thélin (1984) at Camarat Cape (Var) in December.
This work shows that A. preissii tends to monopolize the available substrate
constituting monospecific populations, particularly on P. oceanica shoots, where

quantitative dominance achieves values near 100 %. This behaviour is characteristic of
turf-forming species, whichs due to their filamentous structure and quick vegetative
propagation, are more competitive than erect algae (Sousa et al., 1981; Airoldi er al.,
1994). A. preissii turfs become good sediment traps and, in this way, it may deprive
some spatial competitors of substrate for attachment (Littler et al., 1983). The spread
of this species may change the structure and lower diversity of phytobenthic
communities.
In recent years, in deeper bottoms the A. preissii seems to have suffered from
competition with the pantropical turf-forming alga Polysiphonia setacea Hollenberg,
recently found in the north-west Mediterranean (Airoldi er al., 1995).
Even if A. preissii has not extended its area in recent years, its effects on
benthic communities, prompts the continuation the survey and the study of the biology
of this species, also in other areas of the Mediterranean.

ABSTRACT — The effects of temperature, photoperiod and karyology of Bangia atropurpurea
(Roth) C. Ag. from the Strait of Messina were studied in the field and laboratory. Conchospores
were formed and released in short day conditions and at temperature of 15-18? C, with the
maximum of production and release at 18? C. Culture data correlate well with field observations
on seasonal periodicity of growth and reproduction. Germination and development of monos-
pores and conchospores were not influenced by photoperiod or by light intensity. Temperatures

culture corresponds to a typical sexual biphasic cycle with the gametophytic phase showing n =
3 chromosomes and the “ Conchocelis” one n = 6. Monospores were produced only by
gametophytic plants.

INTRODUCTION
The red algal genus Bangia is virtually cosmopolitan, being found from
subtropical to colder regions of both hemispheres and in both freshwater and marine
environments (Laing, 1928; Yabu, 1967; Lee, 1973). Marine populations usually occur
high in the intertidal zone in moderately exposed conditions (Tripodi, 1967; Sheath &
Cole, 1984).

A sexual life-history, involving the sequential development of two distinct and
heteromorphic phases has been described (Drew, 1958; Dixon & Richardson, 1970;
Richardson, 1970; Conway & Cole, 1977; Cole & Conway, 1980), and appears to be
confirmed on the basís of chromosome counts for the marine species (Yabu, 1967;
Magne in Cole, 1972; Cole et a/.,1983), Two further non-sexual life-history types also
have been found in certain populations. Firstly, the sequencing of morphological
phases proceeds without change in ploidy level (Richardson & Dixon, 1968;
Sommerfeld & Nichols, 1970). Secondly, the gametangial phase can repeat by asexual
monospores or aplanospores (for a review see West & Hommersand, 1981).
In the closely related genus Porphyra, photoperiod, water temperature and
light intensity have been demonstrated to control conchospore production and release
and seasonal occurrence of the blade phase (Conway & Cole, 1977; Kapraun & Lemus,
1987; Waaland ег al, 1990; Gargiulo et al., 1994), In Bangia, such effects have not been
studied in detail (Richardson & Dixon, 1968; Edwards, 1969; Richardson, 1970; Cole,
1972; Sommerfeld & Nichols, 1973; Conway & Cole, 1977) and the factors regulating
conchospore release were not studied by these earlier workers, Bangia atropurpurea
(Roth) C. Ag. is the only species of the genus known from freshwater and marine
habitats of Mediterranean region (Honsell & Tripodi, 1964; Tripodi, 1964).
Life-history data for Mediterranean populations, in controlled conditions, are
limited to those of Drew (1952, 1958) in which she described different growth stages
in marine specimens from Bay of Naples, but chromosome numbers and environmental
factors related conchospore production and release and occurrence of the blade phase
were not examined. Karyological information for Mediterranean populations are
known only for the gametophytic filamentous phase (Gargiulo et al., 1991).
In the present paper we present the results of karyological and culture studies
conducted to determine the effects of temperature, photon irradiance and photoperiod
on the life history of a Mediterranean marine population of Bangia atropurpurea
(Roth) C. Ag. from Strait of Messina, Italy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Bangia atropurpurea plants were collected from intertidal exposed rocks in the
Strait of Messina, Italy (15º40'E, 38º30'N) during the period 1990-1993. Cultures were
initiated from zygotospores released from field-collected specimens. The filaments were
mechanically isolated under dissecting microscope, gently brushed and washed with
sterile seawater to reduce contaminants. Filaments were placed in Petri dishes with
sterile seawater. After spore release, the filaments were removed and the spores
incubated in a modified von Stosch medium (Guiry & Cunningham, 1984) added with
GeO2 5 mg I", The culture were maintained as a unialgal culture. The culture medium
and dishes were changed weekly. Cultures were later transferred to a cross-gradient
incubator (Kapraun & Luster, 1980) to test growth and reproduction of conchocelis
filaments in a combination of temperature and photoperiod conditions at different
photon irradiance levels. Cool-white OSRAM fluorescent lamps produced a photon
irradiance at the surface of culture of 5-70 uE mol m? s”!, measured with a LICOR
Quantum radiometer model LI 185 A. Photoperiod used were 8L: 16D, 12L: 12D, 16L:
8D and 9L: 15D. Experimental temperatures ranged between 10 and 28°C. About
twenty globose tuft of conchocelis filaments were allowed to grow in each dish, and
three dishes where used in each experiment. Field observations on local marine

environmental conditions and phenology of Bangia atropurpurea were carried out
weekly during four years (1990-1993).
Material for chromosome counts were fixed in 3: 1 ethanol: glacial acetic acid
(Austin, 1959), and processed as previously described (Kapraun & Gargiulo, 1987).
RESULTS
Gametophytic filaments appeared in November 1991 and were present until
early July 1992. The population consisted of uniseriate (Fig. 1) and three easily
distinguishable types of multiseriate filaments: vegetative, male and female (Figs 2-3).
Monospores (10-15 x 10-15 um) were produced in both uniseriate and multiseriate
vegetative filaments (Fig. 6). Gametophytic plants formed male and female reproduc-
tive structures on separate plants. Male plants produce packets of spermatia in the
distal part of the filament. Spermatangia were 15-18 x 10-15 um and form 32-64
spermatia (2,5-5 x 2,5-5 um) (Fig. 2). Female plants produced carpogonia (18-22 x
15-18 um) bearing a single protrichogyne (Fig. 3). Spermatia were observed attached to
the protrichogyne with fertilisation canal entering the carpogonium (Fig. 4). Develop-
ing zygotosporangia (see Guiry, 1990, p. 363-365) (18-22 x 14-19 jm) gave rise to 4-8
zygotospores (7-12 x 7-12 um) (Fig. 5).
The presence in the field of the filaments with different spore types or gametes
is shown in Table 1. The intertidal sea temperature where field observations were
carried out ranged between 15°C in February and 25°C in August. The pattern of
average sea temperatures as well as hours of light the year round are shown in Fig. 7.

Zygotospores germinated in culture, 4-10 days after release, in a unipolar
manner resulting in loose tufts of branched filaments, the conchocelis stage (Fig. 12).
Zygotospores were released and germinated in all the conditions of photon irradiance,
temperature and photoperiod tested (Tab. 2); gametophytic thalli and released spores
at temperatures higher than 25? C soon died.

Conchocelis filaments transferred at temperatures between 15 and 22° C
formed conchosporangia under daylengths of 8L: 16D (Fig. 13). Maximal conchos-
porangial production was observed at 18° C with 60 % of plants differentiating spores.
Only few plants (+5 %) formed conchosporangia at 15° C. Filaments of conchocelis
stage grew under short-day photoperiod at temperatures lower than 15°C never
produced conchosporangia. A few spores were produced (10% of plants) at
temperatures between 18 and 22°C under 12L: 12D photoregime. Conchocelis grown
under long day conditions (16L: 8D) never differentiated conchosporangia at any
temperature and photon irradiance tested. The effects of photoperiod and tempera-
ture on the differentiation of conchosporangia on the conchocelis stage are shown in
Table 3.
The conchocelis filaments released conchospores only under short-day
conditions at 15-22? C (40-50 % of plants) with a maximum of release under 9L: 15D.
photoperiod at 18? C (100 % of plants). A small numbers of plants (10 %) released
spores at 18-22°C, 12L: 12D. The effects of photoregime and temperature on the
release of spores from the conchocelis phase are summarised in Table 4.
Conchospores germinated, in all the tested conditions, in a bipolar manner
forming new gametophytic plants (Figs 8-11).
Production of monospores from gametophytic thalli was observed both in the
field or in culture. These germinated in a bipolar way resulting in a new gametophytic
plants (Figs 8-11). Germination was obtained at all the temperatures between 10 and
25° C and at all the photon irradiances tested. At temperatures higher than 25° C, the
spores failed to germinate and soon died (Tab. 5).
Formation of monospores on the conchocelis phase was not observed;
however, a frequent fragmentation of the filamentous tufts was observed, increasing
the number of thalli in culture.
Haploid chromosome numbers n = 3 and diploid 2n = 6 were observed in
spermatangia and vegetative cells of conchocelis phase respectively (Figs 14-15).

DISCUSSION
Bangia atropurpurea in the studies isolates demonstrated a heteromorphic
life-cycle involving an alternation between a macroscopic phase and a microscopic
filamentous conchocelis phase. Chromosome counts of n = 3 and 2n = 6 in the
gametophytic and sporophytic phases, respectively, indicate a presence of sexuality and
meiosis in these isolates; this conclusion is also supported by the observation of
spermatia attached to protrichogyne and the development of a fertilization canal
entering the carpogonium. Bangia atropurpurea populations from North Atlantic and
Pacific Oceans are reported to have similar life histories, however some of these showed
4 and 8 chromosomes in the haploid and diploid phases respectively (Yabu, 1967;
Magne in Cole, 1972; Cole et al., 1983). By contrast, freshwater and certain marine
populations are reported to reproduce only asexually (Nichols & Veith, 1978; Sheath
& Cole, 1980).
Culture data suggest that the conchocelis phase should grow in the field all
year round. By contrast, as reported for most species of the closely related genus
Porphyra (Waaland et. al., 1987; Waaland et al.,1990; Gargiulo et al., 1994),
conchosporangial maturation and conchospore release in Bangia isolates from Sicily
are under photoperiodic and temperature control, occurring only during short days at
temperature between 15 and 22° C with a maximum of production and release at 18° C.
These data correlate well with the conditions observed at the time when first stages of
gametophytic thalli are recorded in nature.
Under culture conditions either gametophytic and sporophytic filaments
either all type of spores are not able to survive at an temperature higher than 25? C,
corresponding to that observed in the field when the macroscopic phase begins to
disappear. On the other hand, germination and development of monospore and

conchospore are not influenced by photoperiod and photon irradiance levels as shown
also by Edwards (1969) and Cole (1972), emphasizing true potential of these structures
to assure the presence of macroscopic thalli throughout the year. According to Cole
(1972), zygotospore release and germination in our isolates are not influenced by
photoperiod; however, Richardson (1970) and Richardson & Dixon (1968) observed in
populations from Washington and British Columbia a unipolar or bipolar germination
of zygotospores when grown under different photoregimes.
In conclusion, temperature and photoperiod appear to be critical ecological
factors acting as a seasonal trigger involved in the regulation of the alternation of
macroscopic and conchocelis phases of Bangia populations in nature. Temperature
seems to be the most important factor, acting directly or indirectly on the metabolism
of gametophytic plants.
Further studies, particularly of populations from other geographical regions
and from freshwater, are necessary for an understanding of the biology, phenology and
geographical distribution of Bangia.

ce niveau, Euscenedesmus (13 espéces) сі Desmodesmus (5 séries et 63 espéces), sont
contestables.

LUND H.C. & LUND J,W.G., 1995 — Freshwater algae, their microscopic world
explored. Hong Kong, Biopress Limited, 360 p., 646 figures.
question.
Treize chapitres subdivisent l'ouvrage.

Belgique (Scripta Botanica Belgica vol. 9), 454 p. 1250 FB. 247 FF.
mastigonémes tripartites sensu Bouck (1969) et un flagelle lisse ou porteur de filaments ;
langue ди хіх? ей du xx° siècle, CNRS, INLF, Nancy, Gallimard, 1992, tome XV, p.
1424 ; voir aussi le Petit Robert, p. 1930). 9. De méme, la plupart des auteurs écrivent
carraghénane et non carragéénane. 10.

ABBOTT I. A. (ed.), 1995 — Taxonomy of Economic Seaweeds, With reference to some
Pacific species. Vol. V. La Jolla, a publication of the California Sea Grant College
System, Report n° T-CSGCP-035, [i]-xx + 1-254. Prix : 10 US$

comparaison avec des espéces à section circulaire d'Asie et du Pacifique ouest (p. 182) ;
bibliographiques des principaux travaux publiés à son sujet ces dix derniéres années ;
208 et fig. 1-5, Gracilaria chorda Holmes var. exilis Yamamoto 1995 p, 210 et fig. 6-7 ;

être précisé ; le titre courant (haut de page) de 50 signes au maximum ; une liste de mots-clés ;
dans le texte ;
Introduction, Matériels et Méthodes, Résultats, Discussion,
Chang
C.F. devient Zhang Jungfu) :

Les renvois à la liste bibliographique se feront par le nom de l'auteur et l'année de publication ;

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS
Cryptogamie, Algologie; Cryptogamie, Bryologie-Lichénologie; and Cryptogamie, Mycologie pub-
lish original papers, and reviews, on the systematics, biology and ecology of cryptogams (algae;
bryophytes and lichens; and fungi, respectively). Manuscripts written in French, English, German,
Italian and Spanish are considered providing suitable referees fluent in the language of the
manuscript are available. Authors not writing in their first language should have manuscripts
checked for grammar and syntax by a suitable person before submission. There are no page limits
for papers. Publication will be facilitated if authors check carefully that the manuscript and
illustrations meet the requirements outlined below.
Papers are reviewed by referees in whose field the paper lies. The choice of reviewers is at the
discretion of the Editor. Final responsibility for the publication of papers rests with the Editor,
Manuscripts that do not conform to instructions which follow will be returned for correction prior
to review. On acceptance, papers become the copyright of the journal.
TEXT. — Manuscripts should be submitted to the Editor in triplicate, including the original copy.
All parts of the manuscript must be typed double-spaced (including references and legends), on
one side of the paper, with left margin of 4 cm, To minimize delays in publication, authors should
send the final version of their manuscripts on floppy disks (5 1/4, 3 1/2) using the DOS (IBM) or
Macintosh format. In addition, the use of MS WORD would be appreciated.
Each manuscript should include, in order:
— A title page containing the title of the paper and, if necessary, its English translation; the
complete name and address of each author (including, as much as possible, fax number and e-mail
address), and author to whom correspondence should be sent; a running title of less than
50 letters, and a list of key words;
— Two abstracts, the first in French (if necessary, some help can be provided by the Editorial
Office), the second in English (a third one in the language of the text is accepted), each of no more
than 180 words or 15 lines, summarizing the major results of the paper;
— The main text, followed by references, legends for figures, and tables, in that order.
The text should normally be divided into sections (e.g. Introduction, Materials and
Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References) appropriate to the nature of the
paper. Indent the first line of all paragraphs. Symbois, units and nomenclature should conform
to international usage, The SI system should be used throughout. The first mention of the Latin
name of a species in the text should be accompanied by the nomenclatural authorities. Consult
the current issue of the Journal for style of headings, sub-headings and other conventions.
Legends for figures, plates and tables should be self-explanatory, and written in the language of
the text and in English if it is not the language used for the text.
REFERENCES. — References should be arranged alphabetically and then chronologically by
author. Journals titles should be cited in full; and books, cited according to F.A. Stafleu & R.S.
Cowan, 1976..., Taxonomic literature. Ed. 2. Utrecht/Antwerpen: Bohn, Scheltema & Holkema.
Conventions of style are provided in the following examples (note that names of Chinese authors
are written in full and listed in the style in accordance with the national change made in China
in 1987; e.g. Chang C.F, becomes Zhang Junfu):

CALL FOR PUBLICATION
Pr. P. Bourrelly died on October 31st, 1995 at the age of 85. He remained active a long
time after he retires, and his books and papers on freshwater algae are well-known by
authors concerned with freswater algae and protists. Also, he was the director of the
journal Cryptogamie and we would like to render homage to him. It is a pleasure,
therefore, to invite phycologists to contribute a dedicated paper to the journal, in 1998.
Your contribution may either be an original research paper or, with the approval of
the editor, a review paper. Contributions should not exceed 40 manuscript double-
spaced pages excluding figures and tables. The deadline for the initial submission will
be March 31st, 1997. All papers will be reviewed in accordance with journal policy and
sent back for any necessary revisions. To ensure a 1998 publication date, revisions will
have to be returned within one month of receipt. Please let me know (if possible by
e-mail or fax) no later than May 31st, 1996 whether you will be able to contribute a
paper or review. A title will be appreciated as soon as possible. Thank you.
