PREFACE.

In introducing this Catalogue of American Mosses, the compilers
believe that they are supplying a want which has long been felt by
American Botanists. It is designed to be a convenient check and ex-
change list, and a basis for arrangement of genera, &c., in herbaria.

The classification is mainly that adopted by Prof. Schimper in his
Synopsis of European Mosses.

All the authentic species and varieties reported, from Mexico to the
Aretic regions, have been included and their habitats given with as wide
a range as the examination of references and several good herbaria would
permit.

Some plants hitherto classified as species are given in this list ss va-
rieties. Doubtful species so far as known, when admitted have been
marked with a star.

We have to acknowledge our indebtedness to Prof. C. H. Peck, the
distinguished State Botanist of New York, for many valauble suggestions.
The late Mr. C. F. Austin, whose recent death deprives American Bryolo-
gists of one of their most zealous, acute and accomplished co-laborers,
kindly gave us much assistance in the work. To Mr. Chas. Mohr of Mo-
bile, Alabama, we are indebted for lists of the Mosses from the Gulf
States, Mexico and the Pacific Coast, represented in his herbarium.
