PREFACE.
During the spring of the year 1825,
alter the dissolution oi the late Washington
Botanical Society, a few gentlemen of
b^this city, devoted to the science of Botany,
formed an association, with an earnest
determination to explore and to investi-
gate, de novo, the indigenous plants grow-
ing in the District of Columbia. The
association, under the name of " The
Botanic club," consisted of Wm. Mechlin,
Wm. Rich, Alex'r McWilliams, M. D.,
the compiler, and during the following
year, of James W. Bobbins, M. D., but
who, afterwards, in the succeeding one,
removed from the District. The Prodro-
mus, herewith submitted to the public, is,
so far, the result of their investigations to
the present time; and, there is no doubt,
that, their contemplated Flora, will con-
tain a much more augmented catalogue,
more particularly, among the species, than
is now presented.
The erudite Botanist will be astonished
to perceive the names of several plants,
in this Prodromus, which, he is well aware
belong to other localities: but when he
considers the various and alpiue sources

of our majestic Potomac, on whose stream
their rudiments are borne, and deposited
along its bank, his astonishment will
cease; at the Falls, too, on both sides of
the river, we have never failed, at each
successive excursion, to procure plants
that were before unknown to us, and add
the strangers to our catalogue. Among
them, for the present, may be mentioned,
the Dracocephalum denticulatum, Silene
regia, Tillaea cymosa, Gerardia auriculata,
and others. The latter is now found
abundantly on the low banks of the East-
ern-branch, (the Anacostia, within our
limits,) and a specimen of the first was
sent to Z Collins, Esq., whose tact and
acumen in Botanical knowledge is unri-
valled, who compared it with those of his
own Herbarium, and with that of the late
Rev. Dr. Muhlenberg's which now belongs
to him: he fortified our decision.* This
plant, as well as the Tillaea cymosa, was
strictly scrutinized by Dr. Darlington,
during his last attendance in the House of
Representatives, whose opinion coincided
with that of the club.
Perhaps, also, from the abovementioned
cause, may be traced in some degree, but,

more particularh, from the enthusi«ism
and zealous energy of the n)eml)ers in
this delightful science, the large j)re[)on-
derance in the number of the Genna of
the f^/wno^^ww^ plants, that are intended
to be described in the Flora, in compari-
son with those of other authors on Amer-
ican Botany. At the end of this ari;« le
a table is exhibited ot the number descri-
bed by each, as well as the time ot their
respective publications. On a referetice
to the table, it will not escape observation,
the great disparity existing between the
result of the labours of Michaux and son,
with those of the late Mr. Elliott, of
Charleston, S. C: the former after ex-
ploring, during six years, the whole north-
ern continent of America, published in
Paris, their Flora Boreali-Americana ;
while, the states of South Carolina and
Georgia, only, are the limit to the inde-
fatigable research, and unwearied zeal of
the latter, who modestly styles it a Sketch
of the botany of those two states.
it may not be amiss, here, to state the
following singular occurrences respecting
the growth of some plants noticed by one
of the members, in which the rest fully
concur, as appears from an extract of the
6 PREFACE.
succeeding communication : — " It would
appear from recent observations, that
some plants are periodical in their in-
florescence; or, from some unknown
cause disappear for several years at a
time; for instance, the Orchis spectahilis
was found bj members of the late
Botanical Society, 8 0/ 10 years ago;
and, altho' the most diligent search has
been made for it, for at least ^?;e years
past, it has not been discovered until
this season, when it is very abundant,
and has been found in various parts of
the District, by different individuals.
I have also observed, that the Arethusa
bnlbos(f, is very abundant some years,
and, during others, extremely rare.
About five years since, Batschia canes-
ce7is, was found in great abundance,
near the Race-course, but has never
been seen since.
Washington, October, 1830.
NOTE,
* The followino; is an extract from Mr. Collins'
letter on this subject —
" Philadkiphia, March 7th, 1822.

EXPOSITION
OF THE
NATURAL SYSTEM OF JUSSIEU,
From Sir J. E. Smith's " Grammar of Botany." London^
1821. Svo.
The Classes arejifteen, not distinguished hy any particular
appellations. One of them is Acotijledonus (plants destitute
of a Cotyledon;) three are Monocotyledonous (plants with a
simple undivided JGmir^o;*) the remaining eleven Dicotyledo-
novs (plants whose Embryo divides at the top into two parts
or lobes, which are the Cotyledons.^)
The Ordehs are one hundred, distributed in natural series
under every class, and each defined by i-ather full definitions,
taken, in the first place, from the parts of Fructification, and
illustrated by secondary characters, founded on any other cir-
cumstance.
The Geneba stand, in one or more sections, according to
their respective affinities, and with their essential characters
under each order, at the end of which are usually many valu-
able critical remarks.
* The embryo or germ of the Seed, called corcidum by Lin-
nxus. This part sends out the Root downwards, and the
J'lumula, or bud of the Stem or Herbage, upwards.
t The Cotyledons or Seed lobes are closely attached to the
Embryo, commonly two, rarely more, in some tribes altoge-
ther wanting. They either ascend out of the ground, and per-
form for a while the office of Leaves, or remain buried, till
they gradually decay.

86 Table of Errata.
For the table of Errata, the Compiler adopts the following^
note from a learned and experienced Botanist, now in London,
and one particularly acquainted with the plants enumerated in
this Prodromus.
" In printing a work where neither the general sense nor
*' construction of the language -could give any assistance in the
*' correction of tiie press, a number ot errors must have escap-
*' ed detection; the fallowing being essential, the Botanist,"
or Reader, " will do well to correct them with his pen."
