M«y 12, 1966

Mr. John J. Ford, Jr.

176 Hendrickson Avenue
Rockville Centre
Long Island, Mew York

Dear Johni

On February 12, 1966 you telephoned me and assured
me that within one month the two open matters between us would
be fully taken care of. Three months have gone by without my
having heard one word from you on either cf them.

You will recall that on July 12, 196? I originally
asked you for a list of Colonial paper money sheets in your
possession, including a diagram indicating the denominational
position. I do not need any of the Continental Currency sheets
except 1779. These were for a book I have completed (the type
is being set) and this information is the only requested data
which I have not received. It is only on 3-half hour *5 work at
most.

The exchange of paper money which was instigated at
your request over a year ago is still open since you were
unable to deliver good title to several of the principal items
and I had to raturn thorn. I suggested an alternate which you
turned down. Naturally, an exchaiige should be satisfactory
to both parties and since you already have the pieces I was
to deliver I should imagine you would want to satisfy me with
something I wanted in place of what you promised but could not
deliver.

My son is graduating from Harvard this year and, like
many others, is going to get married and go back to school
again. The interesting phase is that his wife, who will gradu-
ate from Radcliffe, is transferring to my alma mater, MIT, for
graduate work. In order to try to keep up with some of their
intellect, I must have ray writing as complete as possible
and thus need the sheet data immediately. Vhet does it take
to got you in action.

It so happened that I was on a comult tee to select
Heath Awards for the Numismatist articles of 1965 and I don*t
mind telling you I put your article very high on the list.

I do not think enough people appreciated the work which went
into it.

Give my best to Joan and your daughters.

Sincerely yours.

400 Washington Ave.

Dear Eric:

Charles has just received his copy of your latest missive

I think I should sit down and be a good boy, although my
procrastination to a great extent, to date, has not been deliberate
Even so, I must confess a poorly concealed desire to give you a
hard time, which is predicated upon your affiliation with the self-
appointed vigilantes i

However, as much as you annoy me, I still consider you one
of the best in the business, if not the best, and to me, there is
nothing more important than a cracker jack nuraismatisti

Enclosed, are photostats, of the different types of Vermont
"notes’* recently discovered by Mr. Abe Slopak. This copy represent
Slopak’s own notes, and was sent to me for my information. I am
sending it to you for your information, and would appreciate it
back, as Abe wants it back from me.

If my present good mood holds out, I will write you this
week end.

Very best personal regards.

to me

Sincerely,

Tour letter of May 16, 1966 Is a good self-analysis. If
your good mood holds out you say you are going to write me this
weekend. 1*11 bet you don’t. At least you admit to a poorly
eon coaled desire to give me a herd time because of my affiliation
with what you called •‘self-appointed vigilantes’*. Ton know, very
well, that I was asked to join, presumably because they felt they
needed my participation, and I told you about it as soon aa I
learned what it was all about.

As you requested, I am returning the photostats of the
Vermont interest obligations which were discovered by Abe Slopek.
Since they are listed in the Scott Paper Money Catalogue of l89li
I guess Abe Slopak must be a pretty old man. Bill Anton also
discovered them. Fortunately I don’t have to determine who is
right as they are not money in the first place.

You were nice to say that you still respect my numismatic
work even though you state thst I annoy you. Did it ever occur
to you that you might annoy some people too? If we were all
perfect it would bo dull.

If your mood isn’t good enough this coming weekend to
write me then you will hear from me again and again and again.

Sincerely yours.

\

Dear Johns >

Thank you, r»y much, for sending me the layout of
Colonial sheets irMch you have. I will combine ttiis data
with the data I already have and include some type of digest
of it in my book.

Ydu asked if X had any questions and there is one item
which I woBld like to have reconfirmed and amended, namely,
the Continental sheets of May 10, 1775# On the first one you
list you show a $30 in place of the $3* This, I presume,
is a regular sheet and I would like to have the numbers
on the 8 bills. I also would like you to confirm that it
is a $30 note in that position rather than a $3 note. If
it is a $30 note it means that the $30 note was moved from
position to position for printing convenience so as to come
out with a minimum number of pressings. If' this sheet with
the $30 note is a teat sheet, please advise me of the color
of the paper .

I am enclosing a copy of this portion of your layout
for return to me.

I am also enclosing your original sheets so that you
may have them in your file.

I really appreciate your helpfulness and, as expected,
it was done with the accuracy and understanding of <aie who
recognises its significance.

Cordially,

Dear John:

I am returning herewith the New Hampshire copper
piece which you were kind enough to forward for our
examination and study. I also will return the photo-
graphs if you require them.

I find that this coin was submitted to me in 1963
by Mr. Herbert M. Oechsner, of Montclair, New Jersey,
and at that time I wrote him my opinion, a copy of
which is enclosed. I am more t^san ever convinced the
coin is spurious. I think it is in the same class!**
ficption with all the other ones which have the WM
initials.

I will be glad to discuss it further with you.

Thanks, again, for the opportunity of seeing it.

Sincerely yours.
